Yep just replacing a control arm bushing on a 2004 MINI Cooper S. I decided to get the bolt on bushing instead of cutting the old bushing out. For this you have to lower the subframe, but in my opinion it's easier to bolt on the bushing instead of cutting out the old one and pressing a new one into the bracket. It's a tough job either way.

I did tighten the bolts with a wrench after I zipped them in with the impact. Don't get all worked up about it.
they're all like old women aren't they?!
My local mini specialist just did this for me, as well as a few other jobs.
It's great to see your video to see exactly what they did..
They certainly earned their money!
Hi
How much did you spent for this job?
Thanks
Instead of dropping the subframe to replace the rear bushings I made a press with some threaded rod and pressed the rubber only out. Then I pressed a new rubber piece back in. Saved alot of work and holding up good.
I was thinking that. Seems a lot of work just to press rubber out...
This video helped me see only how far the subframe has to be lowered to changed out the control arm assembly. I've pulled mine completely out in the past when I dropped a six-speed Getrag into my R50 and I seriously was NOT looking forward to dealing with reattaching the steering link. And this video shows that the steering link does not have to be disconnected--major help!
Just loosen the pinch bolt
Just replaced a 2004 Mini one steering Rack and rear Mounts! I used 3 claw puller to remove the old ones, they will rip apart leaving the metal and Runner inner in place. Just use puller again to remove them! To install the new ones just put washing up liquid on the control Arm and Mount, line up correctly pushing on as much as you can, then get a block of Wood, lay it on the Floor and just and wack the mount onto the Wood! just done 2 in seconds without faffing about :-)
If you pull both axles you can get to those two bolts on top. (W/ engine inside)
Dude the trailer tongue as a press.. well I think it speaks for its self for creative mechanics :)
Thank you for the video. It certainly helped me know what I was getting into before I started the job!
I'm doing mine now , lol what a pita it is...geez
I left my axles in place. Super easy to remove the front 16mm bolts.
OH MY GOD HARD WORK.
Loosen the 4 rack bolts and lower the subframe. The 18’s are easy to get to after that with a mid socket and flex ratchet
Doing my wife’s r53 right now. The only bolts that suck are the rear control arm bolts. I had it broken down to those last 2 bastards in less than 2 hours. EZPZ shit. Tomorrow I will lower the rear part of the subframe and wedge it down for easy access
the review at the end awesome
BAP didn’t have 2011 control arm bushing
What was the thing you sprayed with white lithium grease?
Thank you for sharing the video
you're welcome and thanks for watching
Great video. Help me out a lot. Thanks
Easy when u have the engine removed
How bad to change the bushing set if you have the car just as it is, engine in etc. Looks very tight for space = tricky! How many hours?
link to buy trailer?
Was gonna buy a mini that needed this doing, I'm not going to buy that car anymore 🤣
Wish I would have seen this vid before that
Excuse me, I have to change the control arm bushing front left, to remove the 2 bolts I have to loosen the cradle like you did? Of the 3 bolts 2 can be disassembled, but the inner one as I can do; I have the engine mounted. Thank you.
Yea the cradle assembly has to be lowered to get to that other bolt.
Nice video but I think if you wire wheeled the arm where the mount slides on it would’ve saved you a shit load of work installing the mounts.
yea most likely!
Genious press idea haha. So to replace the control arm you just have to unbolt and thats it?
Thanks haha, yep just unbolt it. Very difficult bolts though, and the outer lower ball joint is kind of pressed into the knuckle as well as being bolted into it, so you either have to pop the ball joint out of the control arm, or struggle to unseat the ball joint from the knuckle. So it's still a huge pain.
wow..engine out..thanks for the advice..might as well throw my mini in the trash
im going to be uploading soon a very detailed DIY on control arm AND bushing replacement on an 09 r56 (same process for previous generation)
Stoooppp i have to do the same thing!!! Lmao im cutting mine. Fuck that 😂
If anyone replaces the control arm bushings, go with poweflex bushings.. or else you'll be doing this job twice.
Those are not meant for everyday driving and the cabin noise will be horrible. They also do not last as long do you the independent sleeve.
At least you show model in the video because there's non in the title
You dont need to kick it grab it with your hands and yank it side to side dont break your toe
ya this might be the one thing i pay someone to do for me XD
Should have replaced the bushings with the powerflex one's as the std ones wear too fast and give a sloppy response to the steering. If you need to replace the inner ball joints with the engine in then just remove the drive shafts . Keep up the good work .
Link to where you can buy the Powerflex bushings?
Having an air compressor is well worth it with a bunch of air tools. :)
Do you trail the trailer with the Mini ? :-)
i think he calls it home
Great video. Do you fancy coming to England and sorting out the bushes on my mini 👍😄
I'd love to come to England !
I am in tbe UK as well and my car needs the work doing as well please

I'M INTERESTED TO RECORD AND FLY OUT
OR fill the old bush with 3M 08069 Window Weld which is liquid polyurethane and will literally create a poly bush.
Did you try the window weld trick ? Haven't heard of anyone doing it on these r53 .
In Pa I have failed many cars for trying that garbage trick. It is not safe for the roads in the eyes of the state and anyone worth their salt
thanks for the vid nice one kev/uk
Thanks Kev!
can I install new control arm in my mini 2006 if i drop part of the sub fram
Yea. You might have to unbolt the whole subframe, it's not incredibly heavy, but be careful. I don't think part of it will drop as the bolts on the other side will be holding it up.
Hi did unbolt both sides to replace lower arm. Thanks
Would this be much different for a 2nd gen mini?
probably not too much different but i'm not 100% sure
This looks expensive. And my tire is very wobbly, vibrating on the highway. :(
If a dealer does it it will be expensive, a private shop cheaper but still probably expensive, depends on the shops rates, if you do it yourself it's hard but pretty cheap, and money saved is money earned.
I had a very respectable local shop check it out and it is the bushings. Still waiting on the quote, but he's ballparking around, but probably less than, $1k. (I just rebuilt the Eaton M45 SC for $2,500+ too. It never ends with this old [165k miles] R53. but I drove like a maniac throughout my 20's, back when I got her.)
Get a second quote for the bushings if you paid that much for the supercharger...A rebuilt supercharger is $1k from WMW and should be nowhere near $1500 in labor. Front end service mode takes 30-60 minutes tops (I did it minus draining the coolant in 20 minutes for the first time) to get into and maybe another hour to get the supercharger out.
I shipped it to AutoXCooper. I probably should have shopped around locally though.
Fkn love this bloke..he is sooOOOo dry!
you used the WD-40 or some thing like that for easy fix the rubber bush , but it is not right thing to use because WD-40 is greasy and will affect to rubber then in short time you need to replace it again. the water is best thing to use .
hm yea that's true!
