71 years old here. In the first grade, I contracted the German measles or rubella. Very dangerous at the time. When the doctor said that I could go back to school, they called my mother to come and get me because I kept laying my head on the desk and telling them that anything I looked at went far far away and got tiny and then would come way way back and get big and I remember this Oso vividly. I would often put my hand in the field of vision so that I could watch it get large and small. This went on for the rest of my life and until this day, I occasionally have the experience of it. I did not like it and I did not know how to make it stop. At the time, which to remember this was 1958, the doctor put it down to the high temperatures, one experiences with rubella. He ordered me to stay home another week from school and for my mother to keep me in a complete darkness. Weird, I know, but he was trying to protect my eyes I think. Alice in Wonderland syndrome, well I'm glad to know what it is. I did try telling various people, but I would mostly get there there out of it. I would tell them because I just wanted to know what was going on. Keep the faith dear ones! You have a lovely and lovely marriage. Long time listener.
Fellow AIWS sufferer here too. I started experiencing it after I drowned and was revived in college (I fell through the ice in Maine, and was apparently dead for several minutes). I had no idea what was wrong, but I kept running into walls because I thought they were farther or close than they were. I have broken countless fingers and toes. I also have severe vertigo, so I walk poorly to begin with.
Wow, that's a story. It's one of the unintended consequences of reading a lot of UA-cam replies responses. You dig up some little nugget like AIWS and it explains something you never understood and never got any enlightenment about even at the doctors. Now you write your story and evidence is gathering that maybe it's something to do with a near death experience. Maybe getting that close to the other side forever alters the way you see everything or alters what you trust you're seeing Good luck to you. I am a lover of Maine, so who knows.... maybe we'll bump into each other "ha ha ha"

Well, I will, Be 77 years young , in A few days: about same here on a variety of “ afflictions”……Interestingly, I am still, surviving the “” RADIATION TREATMENTS on skin Infections, circa 1948-50(??), ( **well , lots of Atopics, Skin Surgeries, *& Dermatologist (& other Health Professionals)..etc.
Hearing you talk about that syndrome was wild. It gave me chills. I never realized that that was a thing, but I experienced it all the time when I was a kid
Wow. Just wow. I kept this feeling to myself all my life, I had NO idea other people had this same stuff happen. The smaller and bigger warping was/is insane ! I only get it in the dark when trying to fall asleep, not as much when I’m in the light and awake now. Thanks for shedding some light on it ! ❤
I have the feeling of my body shrinking and expanding and sensory processing issues that fit some of what you described. Docs said it was related to my dysautonomia and migraines. I’m sorry you experienced this Hannah! It’s so unnerving. Shane I love how bad you are at that game😂I can’t tell you how much I will miss you guys for the month. Junkyard Mayhem is one of the highlights of my week❤

Omg omg im almost 65 and have experienced this syndrome off and on since i was 5. Unbelievable! We called it my "feelings". I remember having an EEG 3 different times! Ty ty for this info! I love you guys😊
I’ve had the exact thing happen to me growing up and stopped around 15 as well. Mine was much more severe where I’d wake up not being able to see even though my mom was right in front of me! I had no idea other people in the world had the same problem as me and I can finally feel less crazy! Thank you so much Hannah!
This sounds like what my brother used to experience but the doctors said it was "night terrors".

I’ve also been diagnosed with migraines and absence seizures,could be related to that

Same here I’m speechless reading such great descriptions of my weird deep dark childhood/early teen fall-asleep thing. I have chronic migraines that are hereditary but they started age 18 and about age 8-12
Is when it always happened to me.
Woah! I think my son had this when he was a child; we even went to a doctor and he had a lot of tests done, but obviously the doctor didn’t know about this because my son was never diagnosed with anything. I believe it went away not long after that, but I will have to ask my son!
Every time you guys talk about dreams, im like im so like Shane! I too had medical trauma stuff as a child and am a perfectionist/overachiever. I think it could be that. Nightmares, stress dreams and very odd dreams. Crazy subconscious! Oh wow, and I also had that perceptual distortion as a kid. I remember them associated with fevers and it was mostly body parts getting bigger and smaller. Bodies and minds are wild!

Just watched this and was freaked out because I experienced the same thing as a child. I was around the same age and also, from time to time, would sleep walk. I grew out of it mostly. Now I have flashbacks from the past traumatic events in my life. I wish the two of you all the best for years to come. You make me laugh and I feel the love between you. I had the same issues! Fortunately they've stopped for years now but would have these weird sleep moments like she described and also would sleep walk, I wonder if they're related to each other. I didnt know this had a name.
I work in home health as a PTA and I do develop strong attachments to my patients (seniors), it’s unnatural for me not to if I’ve worked with them for years. I love a good many of them!
Ohmygosh I have totally had this my whole life, but never had words for it! Mine feels like all the sudden I’m moving very slowly or very quickly and sounds change from slow to fast. I hate this feeling so much! It used to happen so much as a kid and now maybe once a year as an adult. Thank you for explaining your experience! My mind is blown!

I had this happen as a child and I would describe it as, the air, atmosphere, and objects would get really thick and then rapidly thin and I would feel the uncomfortable sensation in my teeth. It was creepy, happened at night and nobody's ever related to what I experienced.
I legit blocked out my experience similar to yours Hannah! I was listening and multitasking then BAM I’m in my own version of this, only once tried to explain to my mom but she was at a loss. Probably age 7/8-early teens! Exactly how you describe the timing and sensation. I truly wrote it off as too weird to mention ever. WOW!! This was SO visceral just now…!!

That is so crazy, I've never heard about that before. I remember when I was young (before age 10) sometimes when I was drifting off to sleep, I remember my surroundings appearing bigger but not smaller. It always gave me a good tingly feeling that I loved.
You described my nights as a kid. Never knew what it was called. The tactile stuff is hard to explain by you did great. I knew exactly what you were describing.
I totally had this as kid...I never knew there was a name for it. I called it the big-littles. My husband teased me when i told him about this years ago...so I am not crazy. Thank you for validating this for me!

I thought these hallucinations where unique to me. Thanks for putting this on the internet. I have this when I'm too tired. Mostly just before falling asleep. It's not as bad as it used to be when I was a child
The hose dream is hilarious, but, you tell the story so well, that it makes perfect sense.
Hannah as you started to talk I knew what you were going to explain ,flashback to young me trying to work out why my fingers seemed to go giant and the thing I was holding was getting smaller .That creepy feeling grew as you described your experinces .I thought it was just me so never really talked about it . Usually at night before sleep . Not as bad as your symptoms but definately a thing .Interesting to hear your info . Also interesting when you mentioned epilepsy as not long after this period my mother started having seizures then later also my brother .Love the happiness you guys spread to the world thankyou .
I'm 63 and have had crazy super vivid dreams my whole life! The sensation Hannah describes sounds like parts of an LSD trip, the expansion and contraction as though the world is breathing deeply.
This video just unlocked a memory I have of having the exact same thing happen as a kid a few times. My experience was more of a perception and feeling vs a literal visual view I had (most likely because my room was pitch black and I was trying to sleep). I remember having my head in the pillow feeling as if it was getting larger as well as the window near me. Then I remember my whole body feeling as if I was sleeping in what I can only describe as the subatomic level from Ant-Man.

Pretty sure this unlocked a memory for me! I feel like I remember my parents talking mostly in slow motion, mainly after a good nap, when I was groggy but also feel like there were times they were in a sped up version too! 😱 I used to hate it but never actually talked about it! Don’t think it’s happened past 10yrs old…
It was similar to that for me too. Voices sounded really fast. Even my own thoughts did.
So interesting to find out its a thing that other people experience. I thought I was just weird or something.
I happened less and less as I got older. I was in my later 20s the last time I remember it happening.
I don't remember it happening after sleeping though. I think it just happened sometimes randomly, but I am 45 now and can't really remember what was going on when it happened.
Oh my goodness!! Just listening to this give me anxiety. It stressed me out as a kid, I never talked about it because I thought it was crazy! Even as an adult I get stressed about the big small loud quiet fast slow moments. Ugh! But hearing about this makes me feel less crazy. Wow. I need to do some research,, thank you! Yeah Hanna’s I’m so sorry. I have this along with complex migraine. Constantly feeling distorted and ears ringing is not fun as any age.
I can not believe that this happened to someone else!!! I had it almost every night at bedtime. It was always a person that would change shapes and voices. When I would tell someone about it, they would just be like “reeeaaalllyyy” 🤪 I felt crazy as a child. I have not had it since I was a young child. Thank you for sharing your story because this is something that I still think about to this day☺️
You two never fail to make me smile and laugh. Thanks for sharing your medical syndrome, Hannah. The comments show that it was helpful for a number of people. The new Caregiver Agency or Funeral Home game is a blast. Having worked for more than one agency, I heartily endorse all of Shane's comments about them. By the way, not all caregivers have integrity, so I do kinda get throwing that word into the agency's name.
I literally had this when I was younger , and it still happens to me occasionally!! Until I saw this video I had no idea it was a condition lol

This is so crazy, I forgot about this, but i had this as a child. It only happened to me at night. I remember looking this up, because I thought I was crazy, but when I found out it was a thing, it made me feel so much better. It's such a strange thing, and as a kid, you can't explain that, or at least I couldn't. My arms, legs and hands would feel huge and like they didn't belong to me, or belong on my body. I'm 48, and I can still feel how it felt....thanks for bringing this up, I haven't thought about it in years.....😊
Thank you so much for taking about Alice in Wonderland Syndrome!! I never knew it was a thing until researching it as an adult myself, because I never knew hard to articulate what was happening to me, and I just thought it could’ve been something that happened when you got really sleepy….
Minewood manifest, and for whatever reason I associated with pink insulation foam in the walls would swell up so big. It was spill out of the electrical outlet plates and fill my whole room and I would have to hold my breath while it was suffocating me, but then it would shrink down small and go back into the walls again. !!! Terrified me, so I would pull the top mattress off my twin bed and make myself a protective Lintu against the wall and that’s how I made sure to stay breathing!!
Horrible thing to experience as a child!!!! I remember it being connected to extremely high fevers. I would have as a child (105+\~)
I also have a slight history with sleep paralysis and wonder if they’re connected.
Really interesting stuff and just another example of how wild and amazing this human experience is!!!

I’ve never been able to describe those dreams of things getting larger and the texture would change. I remember my mom telling me they were nightmares and I was often afraid to go back to sleep. In looking up Alice in Wonderland Syndrome it says it can go along with migraines. I’ve had migraines as long as I can remember so it all makes sense. Thank you for the information
Would it be similar to an optical migraine?
My daughter has Optical Migraines but she goes blind during them.
I’ve gotten optical migraines and I get jagged shiny lines around what I’m looking at. I describe it as the frame around the words “bam, pow, etc” in the old Batman series
I experienced this multiple times as a kid too, both when awake and as I was falling asleep. I vividly recall describing it to friends and my mom and no one else knew what I was talking about.
😮 I also used to panic with white noise machines when they were some unknown threshold too loud, but I’ve gotten used to them
Wow! Thank you for sharing this. I've dealt with my own issues throughout my life when trying to sleep or just very tired. When I was a kid, I would hear loud clanging/banging (like serious loud - metal pots dropping on a tile floor sort of loud) as I was trying to fall asleep. Worse than that I would hear my name being whispered in this very urgent way twice in quick succession, it felt like someone was right next to my ear. Which would make me bolt upright in bed. It was awful. It hasn't happened in a long time. What I do still deal with is auditory paredolia. Any kind of white noise is interpreted by my brain as conversation (sometimes it will sound like music). Best I can liken it too is like hearing a television set playing in another room. You know there is conversation, but you can't make it out, only some words pop through. Fans are my enemy. But it happens with refrigerator motors, dryers - that sort of thing. It happens much more frequently when I am very tired. If I am not as tired, I can turn it off if I focus. When I am really tired, I can't shut it off and it really can freak me out after a bit - mainly because it happens while I am trying to sleep and I'm literally laying there hearing people talking. BUT I got myself a rain machine that will play all sorts of rain sounds and that helps SO much!!
I used to have this. My body would either grow to fill the room or the room would expand around me. Things would also fast forward or rewind like a vhs tape. I couldn't believe it when I heard about it as an adult, I'd never told anybody!
Ah yes! I forgot about the rewind and fast-forward effect!!
I have Alice in Wonderland syndrome! I remember that it was such a relief to figure out what it was a few years ago. It’s such an indescribable feeling, but I agree with Hannah that it’s really the sense of dread you feel that sucks the most. Thanks for sharing so more people can discover what this weird sensation is!

I remeber my legs shrinking when i was a teen only when i laid down to sleep...i firgot about it kinda..but thinking my 5 yr old will tell me my head is really big. It makes me wonder. I never had it happen again since i was like 14 or so im 36 now.
Hannahs thing sounds a lot like the "aura" feeling i would get just before a seizure. It was this feeling every night at bedtime as i was drifting off that scared me enough to get up one night to tell my grandmother, but i only made it just in front of her before i went into a paralysis for a minute or so, just standing there. After i released from it i immediately wept in her arms and told her how scared i was and that i didnt know what was happeneing. I was about 9 then and was soon after diagnosed with epilepsy. My triggers were always coming in or out of sleep, like when i would fall asleep in the car, which happened often.
I have since grown out of it, but i do still from time to time get that same weird feeling and it brings a bit of panic to me, knowing that it used to be the precursor of something going wrong in me.
Hearing and talking about it is unnerving to say the least.
Oh wow, I didn't know there was a name for this, it stop when I was 19 and never really thought much about it again. It was horrible I remember having the same sets of dreams. My thumb would be big and small, distance was all wrong I remember the radio in my room being so close to my head but I knew it was actually across the room. Glad to know that it wasn't just a thing in my head. I never told anyone as I thought it was just my mind being tired.

Wow. I had this in conjunction with night terrors for years when I was a kid. I remember telling my family it was like I was in the Mario Brothers land where everything is too big. My bedroom window would be off, and I felt like my whole body was holding on to something that was getting too big. I had EEGs and everything, but they never found anything.

OMG I had this sort of thing when I was younger. As I was falling asleep, low light, all of a sudden, the room seemed distorted. Like the next wall would move further away and I felt like my body was bigger and more dense, so moving would be harder. It only lasted a couple of seconds, I remember trying to hold that state because it wasn't scary 😅
Wow! I had this happen to me quite a few times as a little kid. I think about it often and wonder why that happened. Well thank you for sharing now I know and know I am not the only one. I understand when you say you can still feel the feeling. Its a crazy feeling.

I can relate. I was maybe eight or nine and I would have these strange occurrences often. To describe it, when is poke or someone spoke to me, the last three words would replay for me over and over. It was also super fast speech. I had no idea what was going on. It scared me. It eventually subsided, but to this day,I fear it.
That's sounds really similar to how it was for me too. Even my thoughts seemed really really fast. I never told anyone. I just tried to find ways to get it to go away, like listening to music often helped.
Me! I have had that and had no idea what it was called so thank you! Wow!
Oh that’s so weird this unlocked memories of things like this happening when I was younger I’d feel like my body parts would feel way bigger or way smaller it was so weird and the room would be like wobbly

I had this from about 8-12 years old. Always when I first went to bed and mostly I felt growing huge then shrinking over and over. I am 68 and for about 6 months now I am experiencing something along the same lines. While I watch someone get interviewed on video or television, I see their head get really big and their body get smaller.
Wow never heard of that.
OMFG i had that when i was young and thought something was wrong with me lol. As i grew older it stopped. Also i use to have a dream i fell off a roller coaster so I stopped riding them and never had the dream again. It felt so vivid that i think something was trying to tell me something

Omg I get this syndrome during fevers!!! I always called it "biggie smalls", such a loss of perspective. It's shattering.
If it was during fevers it most likely was PANDAS/ Pans ...myself and both sons have this and only hallucinate when we have fevers....hands/ objects getting bigger and smaller, things crawling on us , being chased,...Dr determined it was PANDAS that was triggered by fevers and being ill with strep or ear infections etc.
Omg I am so stunned, I am sure this must me what I had as a kid. I had what we always called reoccurring nightmares where people or objects in the dream would sorta pulse from extremely thin to vey fat . Going in and out with my pulse. The feeling would freak me out and I would often still have the feeling after I woke up. I am definitely going to research this more. Thanks so much for sharing this info as now I don’t feel like I was crazy as a kid. Y’all are awesome ❤️😀❤️😀❤️😀
I would have these same episodes as a child as well. Shortly after it began, we discovered it was linked to epilepsy. It was a scary time. Thankfully I grew out of it. Thanks for sharing, I thought I was alone!

I had that Alice In Wonderland Syndrome when I was a kid, I had what Hannah described a lot when I was a kid. I don’t think I ever talked to my pediatrician about it though. Actually I still have it once in a while now as a 37 yr old adult but it’s very rare when I do. I didn’t know it was a real condition or had a name. Thank you for talking about this Hannah.

Wow! So that is what it is. I have had that same syndrome since i was 5-6 years old up until i was 14-15. I still get glimpses of it from time to time but not as severe as it was when i was young. I am 42 today. Today it is only visual but it was just as you described when i was young. My mom will be thrilled to hear that i have found out what it is :) Thank you Hannah 😊

Oh my, it happened to me, too. I'd be lying in bed with the lights out. I would open my eyes, and my room was huge, I had this feeling that I could not touch my walls because they were so far away. Next thing, my room was small. I also think I was on the verge of being asleep, and I would jerk awake. I still get the feeling I am falling and startle myself awake.
I love the new game Hanna thought of. It makes me laugh out loud! Keep it up!🤣
Hannah! I suffered that same hallucination experience when I was about the same age - about 8 to 11 when I would go to bed.
I'm 61 now. Until now, watching this video, I never knew what it was. I thought it was just me and my imagination. It used to freak me out as a kid.
I never told my parents. I never told anyone until right now.
SAME HERE! I’m 44 and just shocked to read so many similar descriptions of the creepy thing I never wanted to remember or share!

I had alice in wonderland syndrome as well! To this day when someone talks to me really slowly i internally panic. I remember yelling to my mom yelling her to talk normally. Mine seemed to be triggered by temperatures normally. I would get a weird feeling in my hands kind of like grabbing dough and i knew it would hit me that night. It is so scary though!
I have it. I haven’t felt things go large & small since a teenager. I do feel time is sped up by 2.5 x at once a week.
So interesting that you mentioned Lewis Carol. I have experienced migraines with aura since age 11, and remember reading that Carol had been a sufferer of those and that it was thought to have explained things being 'off' in the scenes he created. Often my first symptom of my migraines, which are only once every few months these days, is what I've always called 'the big hand'. It's actually not bigger, but it appears closer to me and hyper in focus while everything around it isn't. It can spark a horrible moment of panic that it's the start of a migraine episode. Your syndrome made me think of an uncomfortable memory I have, though I don't know if memory is the right term. From time to time I get a sensation of having between my thumb and forefinger a book that is tiny in height and width, but disproportionate in thickness, SO thick, like a book, of that tiny size couldn't possibly be, and it's the most physically uncomfortable sensation, makes me feel so panicked, and uneasy even though it's only in my head. Bodies are so peculiar! Loved the episode, what will we do all those weeks without Junkyard Mayhem??! 😢
This feeling used to happen to me at night as a kid and sometimes now during the day! I have never been able to explain it but to say “there’s like giant things and it gives me the worst feeling and freaks me out.”

OMG! I've had the same experience in my life. I can't say how often but enough to relate. I still have it even at 40 years old. Didn't know it had a name! And such a cool name! I do have a seizure disorder that developed in my late 20s but I've had it my whole life. It never bothered me. Just thought it was a weird thing my brain did sometimes lol.
Same! I didn't have the words to describe it! I would feel like my head was huge, and everything else was really tiny, even my hands!

Omg Hannah me too! I thought I was all alone 😭 except I’m in my 30s and it still happens once per year. The worst part for me is the auditory hallucinations. It’s so loud! And I was so scared when I was 4 and it happened every night. No one believed me until I showed my mom the 20/20 documentary in 2011
My son had an similar experience as a 10 year old and it would happen at night, just as he was falling asleep. He was eventually diagnosed with partial complex seizures by a pediatric neurologist. Vision went big and small and his hearing became very amplified. The neurologist said it was due to misfiring in the brain in the part where vision and hearing come together. It is more common at night because the brain activity is quieting down. He was on seizure medication and eventually outgrew it after 3 years.
@Squirmy and Grubs - my mother passed away last Friday and she was taken to Friends Funeral Chapel in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. It is a thing - and honestly, they do make you feel like you're among friends and were extremely helpful with arrangements and explaining everything along the way. My mother was treated with dignity and respect as well. Thanks for making me laugh today, it's been a rough week.🥺
So sorry for your loss. Hopefully community (wherever you find it, even at the funeral home, online, etc.) helps carry some of the weight.
