Shane Burcaw is the author of several award-winning books about disability. He is the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah Aylward graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog, which has over 670,000 subscribers on UA-cam. Hannah has spoken at prestigious universities and Fortune 500 companies alike about the realities of ableism. On her popular Instagram account, she advocates for acceptance of all people and works to improve the way society thinks about disability.
Shane and Hannah have been together for over four years. They got married in September of 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic in their backyard, with their officiant conducting the ceremony via Zoom. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.

My wife and I have been together for 15 years this year. Sadly she is disabled due to arthritis, pretty much confined to a wheelchair and requires assistance from a support worker when I'm at work. She's an inspiration to me though as she is able to still raise our children (both of which are also disabled) and allow them to continue to grow. At times I feel like I'm a bit useless as I'm not around as often as I wish I was (due to work mostly), but she assures me that I'm doing the best I can. I look at things quite differently than most people, our marriage is not conventional, our family is not normal, but honestly, I've seen normal and normal is boring. A true partnership with my wife and also my kids is what I truly value. 🙂

Now we will be celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary in June of 2021, our live have changed a lot. My husband is not only my hubby and my best friend but he is also my caregiver. In 2017 right after my 49th birthday I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. I couldn’t do this life without my best by my side. My story is just like yours basically. We met online, we were 55 both just divorced & NOT looking for a spouse at all. We dated 10 years & finally married in 2012. I wish we hadn't wasted those 10 years but both of us were scared of another failure. I was married 38 years he was married 34 years & neither was happy. God put us together for sure. He's been my long term care giver due to many health issues for me. I don't know what in the world I would do without him. He's my best friend, soul mate, and the absolute love of my life. I think it is good to bring awareness to it rather than shy away from it and if people who followed my channel were getting harassed, I would wanna know. It seems to me that Hannah and Shane have a pretty healthy approach to dealing with all of this and dont let people get under their skin about it.

I think in this day and age, we're taught that love can't come quickly, and it must be questioned and doubted unless it's proven over a period of time, but this seems restrictive as if dictating how love should work than allowing it to progress on its own. If it worked for you, then that's wonderful! :)

I'm disabled and I was wondering if you have any tips on how to find someone. I don't blog or anything like that, so I am not sure what to do. My biggest problem is I have a trach and makes my voice quiet, so girls rarely approach me.
Never be afraid to put yourself out there. Regardless of anything, everyone struggles with rejection and dating. Use your hobbies to your advantage! Use the internet to your advantage! Find people who like the same things you do branch out from there. There's always a person out there thinking "how do I start" with love and dating. So don't be hard on yourself. You GOT THIS!
