There’s a lot more nuance to the situation. I myself am disabled, and I can recognize that having a disabled partner can be a lot for some people, and not everyone can handle it. Questioning an interabled doesn’t automatically imply that disabled people are less valuable.

Respectfully, Christina, millions and millions of men get shot down in flames by women, and are made to feel lesser, simply because they're shorter than 6', or bald ... things they have zero control over. A significant percentage of women won't even _consider_ a guy -- no matter how awesome he is -- simply because of height or baldness (or 50 other nit-picky things). So why the surprise about people's reaction to Hannah and Shane?

Amazing story. My mom was in a car accident in 1971 that left her paralyzed. She met and married my dad in 1977 and I was born in 1979. Spouses as caretakers is hard but it's so fulfilling. My dad was a Rockstar!

That was one of the better ways to spend an hour and a half. Wow, thank you! This talk was super illuminating. Also, when you said "When men want sex what they really want is emotional intimacy" a lot of light bulbs went off in my head. Being a disabled women, sex is this big scary thing for me. I worry that i'll stay single because this area is really hard for me to offer in the usual way. Someday I will find a man secure enough to be emotionally vulnerable and intimate with me to where what i'm able to offer is more than "enough". 🥰

I do too. Thank you for sharing that here! I stayed away from dating because - and back to that word - I couldn't stand to be a burden. Sometimes lately I think Why did I assume all men would think that? Not give anyone a chance? Extra silly as one of my earliest heroes is a lady named Joni Earekson (I butchered her name, yikes). When she got married I was so encouraged. Joni broke her neck at 17 diving into a pond & became quadriplegic.
She learned to paint with her mouth! Really beautiful paintings. I love that her husband's name is "Tada". So I thought, ok, I'm not looking for Mr. Right, I'm looking for Mr Tada. (My friends thought that meant " Ta dah!", which I think works too. :0)

I said that very thing to my husband years ago ‘just listen to me, I don’t want you to fix it’. That was a real eye opener for him. He loves to talk and fix everything. He listens more now. Side note: we’ve been married 60+ years!

I don't remember the context now, but hearing that from my Mom - who has always been stunningly beautiful, and I don't think she knew it, which makes her even more beautiful! But having been in a very broken body for 30 years, I love that. We are who we are inside. And I believe I'll leave this thing behind one day.

As a physical disable man myself i recognized myself a lot in some of the things he was saying but i learn a lot from the couple perspective because it has been and it still is hard for people that i am in a intimate relationship with to know how to handle and me feeling uncomfortable with my condition . I've been watching Shane & Hannah for a few years. Great interview. So many good points. One thing that stuck out for me was when Shane talked about his burden complex. I have Spina Bifida, so I have been disabled since birth. I have struggled with the same feelings of not being worthy of relationship, or not wanting to be a burden to a potential partner.

What a great show. I love them so much. I learned alot too about myself and my emotional uncomfortableness in this discussion. Also, I gotta say, when we think of one aspect of masculinity being about protectiveness and how Shane's disability meant he couldnt protect Hannah, he did in fact protect Hannah and did it rapidly, when Justin asked about sex he said that he likes to keep some things private. So, once again he did it emotionally with words, by setting boundaries.

I'm one of Shane & Hannah's subscribers so of course I watched this for them but I'm subscribing to your channel because of you three! What sweet people you all are. My husband & I are both disAbled but we were still doing pretty well when we met. He actually went online & researched my disease, he was not the first one either, and knowing that what I have is terminal & only going to get worse, he felt I was worth it. His issues took the lives of two of my siblings, that was hard for me to know but he's worth it & we have been together 24/7 since our 3rd date, 12 years ago! I never get tired of him & vice versa. We have our own interests & social circles online so it gives us plenty of free time & together time. TOTALLY open communication is absolutely key. We talked out the good, bad, & ugly before our first date. No secrets to come to life no questioning how the other feels about anything. We are to each other the best friends ever, love of each other's lives & we've both been married long term & raised families. I never worry that I am enough even though I can't do everything for every body anymore. I might be afraid of dying too Shane, but I know people will all remember me for being strong, stubborn, & a fighter. You too!

I saw my husband in person for the first time at the Philadelphia airport as well. I was late to pick him up also. Lol. That moment is burned into my mind though. I was 17 when we met, and I was disabled at 19 after an accident. My husband stood by me, like it was never a question. I always related a lot to your love story, Hannah and Shane. Unfortunately, my husband passed away unexpectedly in April of this year. I'm 39 now, and I don't know how to move forward.

Love is not a burden. Thank you. I've felt like a terrible burden, especially lately, my Mom was my caregiver, then we were shocked, then... I have no words for the next feeling. She was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's. So now my 84 year old Dad - dealing with an almost completely U shaped spine, & pain I will not pretend to know - is caring for both of us.
My very able bodied brother moved back to our town, I so hoped to help. But he just ... couldn't. He is an angry guy. All the privilege in the world, & he just hates. He loves to tell me & the Internet that it's my fault my parents don't have things, & that's hard to deny. Until I saw that line.
Thank you, sorry, all a cry baby now. Thank you for sharing your story, for living out love. Love isn't just a feeling, it's definitely actions. ❤

You know, I've been following you guys for mobths .. and without a doubt this is my very favourite interview. I'm used to you joking around a lot and still addressing issues but you really laid your selves bare during this interview, you really were incredibly transparent. To be disabled I had to lean into my vulnerability! Understanding that there are things I can't do but I need lean into how my character as a human has grown because of my disabilities. Justin and Shane you are men that I deeply love! I love you both for being who you are.

What a great discussion and perspective. My husband and I are not interabled. He is a healthy big strapping man. But that being said he was not raised like the topical mannly man ideal. He can't build or fix things or work the land. But he is a wonderful man, amazing father and husband, and my safe place. For so long I would hold that typical ideal of what a man 'should' be and it would cause issues.
In the recent years I have finally come to the conclusion that we each bring our own strengths to the table. And truly that is why it works. He is good at yard work, and making sure our tanks are filled, and vacuuming, and getting the groceries and working hard at his job and so many things. I am the builder and fixer of things and the emotional guide and so many other things. So some of the gender roles are not as they 'should' be, but for us it's what works and makes our household function best.
We need to stop 'shoulding' all over everyone and thing.
Also, love watching all Shane and Hannah's episodes and love to see them normalize the interabled couple. They are so natural with each other and prove that it's not a gender thing or an abled thing, it's a personal strength thing and working as a true partnership to make the relationship work. That looks different for every couple and should not come from a society mold.
Man! The part about how Hannah wasn't a natural care giver hit home big time. She and Shane fell for each other regardless of all their differences. This reminds me again of me and my husband... I always tell him that when we met I literally felt this electric felling in my body. I just knew he was my person. We fell hard for each other within weeks of being friends. And when we started dating a year later all our thoughts came out and turns out he had felt the same as me the whole time. I was the girl who never wanted to get married, never wanted kids, never wanted that society driven typical life, but once he came into my life everything changed. Not to say we have the typical societal roles but we did get married and gave a kid and are happy just being.

Liz’s comment hit the nail on the head with respect to why I enjoy and in many ways look up to Shane and Hannah’s relationship. It has nothing to do with the inter-abled nature, more so their ability to communicate, laugh, and tackle the world as a team. Sadly, it makes me feel “not enough” when watching their videos as I struggle to make sure I am the best partner, not “man”, I can be, and I am the guy who mows the lawn, is the breadwinner, etc, all the traditional “manly” activities one does in a relationship.

I've adored these two for years. They are so grounded and hilarious and genuine. I've known a lot of men who can't change a tire. lol I remodeled two homes mostly by myself. I'm perfectly capable on my own, as is Hannah. The concept that women are incompetent of handling the physical rigors of life is behind the misogyny. Women don't actually need a man to be their protector, handle the spider in the room, or change the oil in their car. We have Jiffy Lube now to handle the car and know how to disable an attacker and use a glass to get the spider. We pay the bills and can do anything a man can and can hire someone if we can't. So, to me, it was never confusing why Hannah and Shane are together because he's kind, intelligent, hilarious, and fully capable of many things, and contributes a lot to the relationship just as any man would but in different ways in some regards. It's not odd to me at all. So, when I hear someone suggest that it isn't fair that Shane has a beautiful woman and they don't, I want to suggest to them that if they actually saw her rather than their own idea that she somehow needs protecting or someone who can mow the lawn, they'd see that Shane is more than enough and in fact preferred over this guys misogynistic view of what a great man is or what a woman needs. Being a great man isn't about physical strength, it's about emotional strength and intelligence, calmness in crisis yet excited about life, and laughing together and all the little things you do that show you care. If you don't have those things, you are more of a burden to a woman than Shane ever could be.

Once again it is Society that somehow taught us that people being disabled and especially as an extreme disability like Shane has doesn't qualify them to be in a relationship with someone who is fully able.Like Hannah says so many people question her and basically tell her she is crazy to be married to Shane🤦‍♀️Yet there are people in normal physical relationships in this world that are so broken emotionally that their Souls are disabled.
Shane is such an inspiration to the world yet he also openly talks about his struggles and how hard it was to get where he is.Attracting such a Beautiful, Intelligent Woman like Hannah as a friend and then falling in Love is amazing.And the way they both have navigated their way through all of the Emotions they had to face to extend way past Caregiving. We easily forget that in every normal health relationship/marriage, Caregiving happens all the time its just different.Like Jamie said when his wife in the first few months of their marriage had to take care of him which was sometimes embarrassing. I also had to do all those unspoken tasks for my husband when he had a triple bypass and then when he had a Spine op.He also just a week ago suffered a mild stroke and I had to clean him up before the paramedics arrived to take him to hospital. And on Saturday past we celebrated our 45th Anniversary an it was still embarrassing for him to have me do those things..

A coworker told me to watch these two when covid hit round 2 in Hawai'i and got super bad again because I work in Healthcare and I was not going to go anywhere but home and work for a while. It's inspiring two not watch them for the dynamic of abled and disabled but just as people!!! I find it so rare when two people are clearly just that other person's ride or die, and that's what I love about this. They give me hope for love. I am disgusted by the comments they said they got. How disturbed and insecure in that person leaving the comments but be in their own being to leave such hate. I'm invisibly disabled. Meaning not noticable. However, the sad part is people don't always treat you kind of you look great and you're intelligent. I'm learning so much this evening and love this channel/podcast. Also, I'm a huge fan of Shane and Hannah. They deserve their own sitcom lol I wanted to share that my husband and I are best friends. Kinda like George and Gracie Burns lol (Google them you youngins) 😉
He's a touring musician and the breadwinner and I was a sickly, Newly divorced, momma scared and alone. I later was told by my husband that my heart, beauty, momma skills, kindness and compassion. He actually felt very inadequate due to looks, shyness, awkwardly adorable I call it lol we realized we both were in it to win it as best friends and lovers. Not keeping score, communication but most importantly compassion and respect. Very few disagreements, we can't stay angry at each other (cause that's no fun) lol I compliment him and he compliments me. If we feel something's wrong we set time aside. I'll be honest though at 58yrs old... Have a great sense of humor 😂✌🏻🙏🏻💕

As a polio/post polio condition women… I would like to see a movie with a disable person , that is not about the disabled person. We just want to live the best we can. Show the challenges and how it’s part of life. As a women , I am suppose to have a miss America goal. Especially because I am offering less because of my disability (as a teenager) we all have growth.. I do still apologize when my partner has to lift me, or get me food at a buffet .He doesn’t even think about it it’s just part of us.

Im not in a wheelchair and a RN and still need a large amount of parental assistance for physical and financial means as disability wants you to stay under the poverty line. Why do you feel they should live a more difficult life when the parents wanted to help more? Parents help out a lot of able people as well due to financial insecurity post xenials.. Are you like this to people in your personal life? I'd consider being kinder or no one will be around when you are old and disabled before you die and just hope you're financially secure enough to not need outside assistance "to keep up with your fairy tale".

So many things that can be said here. My biggest take away is that there is many nuances in the realm of man and women loving and connecting outside of the normal biosocial norms. Though the biosocial norms, tendencies and expectations are very real and come from an organic animalistic place...the way our personalities and psyches can provide joy and safety for each other knows no bounds.

Hannah talking about wanting Shane to just listen and not give her advice or a solution about some things --- that's a relationship issue even able bodied people have. It's a thing even between me and my adult son. It's a human nature thing, not an interabled or able bodied thing. It's wonderful that they are learning that about each other so early on. I know of couples that have been married 30, 40 years or more who still haven't figured that out. Kuddos to Shane and Hannah for allowing each other to be who they are.

Hello from faraway Austria. Wow. This was amazing. Listening to this podcast was a revelation for me.
And I don't only mean Hannah and Shane, but most of all you 3 interviewers. I loved the way you conducted this interview. Loved your sophisticated authentic humourous frank talk. Loved it!!
I've been following the Burcaws for a while and I admire and envy them for their strength, dry humour, courage to be so open , their resilience to hate postings.
2 weeks ago here in Austria a general practicioner, having spoken out critically about people denying the existence of the pandemic, tragically ended her life at age 36, because she couldn't cope anymore with the amount of hate, hatemail and death threats from antivaxxers and conspiracy theorists and the lack of support from authorities. It is this latter that sparked a bitter argument between a close friend and me. To his mind the doctor herself was to blame because she chose to a) speak publicly about a delicate matter and b) kill herself, no one told her to do that. I still cannot put my head around this. This chosen ignorance and wilful denying of mental suffering. And there are many Austrians who think along the same line.
I don't know if she was suffering from a temporary or permanent mental disease, but a lot of people are. And are not taken seriously in their disability to cope with certain aspects of life or life itself.
I have known depression for a looong time and I still catch myself having to explain to close friends why I am not like "millions other single full-time working parents" who "go through the same" and "keep their shit together" apparently way better than me. It is because often I am simply overwhelmed by life and don't have the mental strength to perform more than the daily chores. It is NOT because I'm weak-minded, lazy or stupid.
Mental illnesses are a kind of disability as well. And those need to be addressed as such. And represented in daily life. In UA-cam Channels. Movies. TV ads. We need more anchors that talk about their panic attacks. Couples who talk about how they cope with one of them suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder.
We need to dissect and dismantle the so-called 'normalcy' and the norms that we derive from the abstract state of this normalcy and look at life itself as it is. Acknowledge the many and manifold ways that lifes can be led and love can be found. If we cast away preformed concepts and have the courage to take an unbiased look at reality, allow ourselves to feel instead of judging, THEN we will truly be able to be Man or Woman Enough. That's all we need really. And maybe sometime in the future more people like me will be able to make fun of their mental illness and laugh at their nightmare 😊

I watched this today and the lightbulb in my head went off. I have a husband who is good a fixing, building, lifting, work but is a man who has a bad temper who finds his manhood in doing heavy work and lacks sensitivity towards me. Has no sympathy for my chronic back pain. Because of anger issues I could care less about his Physical abilities.
So to be loving, to be sensitive, to be supportive emotionally is what matters.

Love this podcast! I've followed the lovely Hannah and Shane since they started UA-cam. They're wonderful human beings and I think they have and will continue to teach the world about real love!
I worked as an ICU/ER LPN nurse for years. I was diagnosed with SLE-lupus at 27, have 4 children, 2 are adopted. I have been happily married for 42 years. My husband still makes my butterflies rise when he enters a room. I wish for all to have the love my husband and I have.

Andrew is white and has a really nuanced and beautiful perspective on masculinity that I think would be beneficial to this audience. I was my husband's caregiver for the last 14yrs of our 37yr marriage. Sadly, for us, it did change the intimacy in our marriage. My husband stopped seeing me as his wife, but as his nurse. In addition, his medical issues (and meds) did play a huge part in causing incontinence & erectile dysfunction. All that definitely affected his feelings of inadequacy as a male and in his masculinity. I, on the other hand, was desperate for closeness. I won't say it wasn't hard at times, but I loved him and truly did understand how he felt. Shane and Hannah, you two are a great example of what we all should be striving for in a relationship. ❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏🤗🤗🤗

The difference here is you are open and honest about the intricacies and complexities of inter abled relationships, whereas these two jokers are totally disingenuous. The pain an overly simplistic and fairytale picture of such a relationship. Every relationship have difficulties, never mind one's as complex as this, yet they will not admit to even ONE difficulty in the power balance. They protest too much, and where I have an issue is I regularly see posts from other disabled people questioning themselves and their own relationships and capacity, because their life doesn't match up to the idyllic picture S & G paint, which in my opinion is irresponsible for two people who claim to be disability advocates. I wondered why originally, until they bought their mansion and very quickly realised that the story they paint is very lucrative, hence all the smoke and mirrors. I have very little respect for either of them. I'm not a troll who questions their relationship, if they say they are together then I will take that at face value, but they could actually be out there doing some good for the disabled community if they were honest about their lives. Instead, they chose the most marketable story. Shane has tried this twice before with two other blonde beauties, it's just this time he found someone willing to go all the way down the rabbit hole with him.

@@WeAreManEnough Thx you ❣️ Yes, the struggles were hard, but I married him because I loved him, worts and all. When his time to go finally came, I wanted another 14 yr gift of more time. However, God knew better and it was right time for his struggles to be over. It just took me awhile to come to terms with it. It's been a little of 4 yrs now and I so glad he is no longer suffering. I was given one last give just hours before he passed. He'd been on a trach for 2mos and they were weaning him down. I was able to hear him say he loved me one last time. What we lost intimacy was hard, but our love grew in so many other areas. For me, I discovered how hard my husband would fight to stay with me and give us more time together. I've never regretted my choices, he was my hero. I'd do it all again without a second thought. ❤️❤️❤️. I miss you my love......

All men feel like it is their job to "fix things" when women have things go wrong. Women sometimes just need to vent. When we do, men need to try to fix it. Or at least somehow make it better. We need you to just listen and let us vent. Couples work better when they can fill each others needs, not "take over and fix it".

First of all to everyone involved in this podcast & it's message BRAVO! My husband has been mentally ill for years and physically ill for at least 6 months now. He deals with so many issues that affect how he views himself that are caused by 'the standard' or 'what a man should be or be able to do', I can't wait to share this with him.
