Shane Burcaw (he/him) is the author of several award-winning books about disability. He is the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah Burcaw (she/her) graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog, which has over 730,000 subscribers on UA-cam. Hannah has spoken at prestigious universities and Fortune 500 companies alike about the realities of ableism. On her popular Instagram account, she advocates for acceptance of all people and works to improve the way society thinks about disability.
Shane and Hannah have been together for over four years. They got married in September of 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic in their backyard, with their officiant conducting the ceremony via Zoom. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.

my wife and i were married for 23 years before her stroke. in a heartbeat she went from vibrant to a tetraplegic. she lived for another year and a half. it is absurd that people think love and devotion is limited to able bodied people. love knows no limits and apparently neither does ignorance.

As a child of a disabled dad and able bodied mom I so appreciated this video! My mom was super attractive and I recall twice men coming up to her while I was pushing my dad in his wheelchair asking if she’d like to “go out”...she was always so classy the way she turned them down while making sure they knew my dad was right there and more man than they could ever wish to be! Why would anyone question you about your mom's intentions not everyone is close minded. I'd actually love to hear your story. I am somewhat able. I broke both bones in my ankle a couple months ago and was in a nursing home and felt that I was a worthy human as I am as your parents are.

My only son married my beautiful daughter in law who is in a wheel chair and disabled with cerebral palsy. When they were dating me and my husband were ignorant and worried that my son would be just a carer and unhappy with his life. How very wrong we were. They have been together a number of years now and are very much in love and inseparable. She’s the best daughter in law we could ever have had. She brings so much happiness, joy, love, strength and inspiration to us all. My son is the luckiest man alive to have such a wonderful woman as her. 🥰

I have mild cerebral palsy and epilepsy and my husband doesn’t have any disabilities. We met over 28 years ago in our early 20’s …now married over 26 years. We had no money worth talking about and he proposed in less than 3 months. We were married over a year later when I was done college. Trust me many people will always be cruel and rude. We get dirty looks and whispering horrible things. I think some of the worst things are overhearing people calling me crippled, assuming he’s my brother, or one time a lady overheard my boss asking if my cute hubby was picking me up after work…and a customer actually said Aw…ur married 💕 Did u meet at a handicap support group or something like that?
I answered by saying…No he’s not disabled unless you consider wearing glasses 🤓 a disability. She replied by saying…oh I just assumed that he was since I’ve never seen a handicapped person married . We have 2 children in their 20’s now and neither of them are disabled…in fact our daughter is in grad school student who is getting her masters degree in Occupational therapy.
You 2 are adorable so you owe no one an explanation or justify your love, sex life, money, or anything else. Enjoy your lives together and don’t let anyone bother you. ❤️❤️They are just jealous 🤗

My wife is a wheelchair user, we can get comments like "how will you take care of each other". Adaptive devices do not diminish the care nor the value of a relationship. I love her so much and I hope that people learn from you guys too. Love has no boundaries, love isn't made to have a fence in front of it but a door to be opened.

When I first meat my husband (1980) he was/is disabled. His arms don’t work due to a motorbike accident and he is also on the autistic spectrum. That was 40 years ago and we are still married. All my friends would ask why I wanted to be with him and that we wouldn’t have a good life and that he was a dummy. They said our children would be autistic and my life would be ruined. We are celebrating 36 years married on the 22nd of this month and I still love him, We have 2 children who don’t have autism, not that it would matter. My husband isn’t a dummy and works with disable children. People would call him useless but when my dad was end of life My husband sat with him and held his hands, that’s not a dummy it’s love and kindness. People still can’t understand why I married him if we meet someone new but most people love him now. Things are better but judgemental people are still out there. Good luck in your lives together

Why don’t people mind their business. A woman wants a man who really loves her and who is good. Looks fade, a strong man can grow weak, anyone can become disabled so does that mean we won’t love them anymore? My wife of 25+ years had a genetic condition known as neurofibromatosis. She had had innumerable spinal surgeries for severe spinal curvature from ages 1 to 11. In 2000 her spine began shifting again requiring additional surgery. During the previous spinal surgeries too many arteries had been cut to afford anymore surgeries. Without that awareness, the surgeon clamped off an artery at the T6 level to cut it, which is routine. Without appropriate circulation at that level, the nerves died resulting in paralysis from the waste down. Until last year, I have been her caregiver. Yeah, didn't marry her for her money, never cheated on her. We had a remarkable relationship. She passed away last year. She had an intestinal impaction. Dead bowel was discovered and too much had to be removed for her to maintain nutrition. Based upon discussions we had innumerable times, I determined she would prefer comfort measures over the other options. I had been her caregiver since 2001. my 6 year old cousin has neurofibromatosis 1 and we look forward to everything she will accomplish , and with the way she acts with her dolls we know that one day she will be a great mom, aunt, friend, partner and sister when she gets older. Like yeah sure their will be rough patches but no matter what she will be loved by whom ever and every person

I am a nurse, my husband has type I diabetes, we have been married for over 20 years. I love him. Many (even nurse friends) say: "as a nurse why would you ever marry such a sick, type I diabetic!! OMG YOU WILL ALWAYS Have to take care of him!!" I married my husband because I love him. Sick or well. He is brilliant, kind, funny and thoughtful. We have been married for over 20 years.
I've been type 1 for 38 of my 40 years . Since 18 months old.
I have had a few eye issues but have had treatments and see just fine.
As for manor illnesses I would take diabetes over alot of other terrible diseases.
Granted my long term prognosis is not as bright as a non diabetic I dont let that stop me.
Just planning on living as much as I can as long as I can.
@@goalie2998 yes!! My husband is just turned 77 on December 14th and he has a few minor issues related but he's healthier than a lot of other non diabetics his age that I've cared for! It's all about careful management! 🥰 bless you!

My dear husband was born with spina bifida and never walked a day in his life without the aide of a full leg braces and crutches. But I tell you one thing, nothing ever stopped him from doing anything he wanted to do. He was such an inspiration to many people. Sadly, after 30 years of marriage, he passed away from cancer. Hey guys, I've been watching your show for about 12 months now ( not seen this one before) I stumbled across you out of an interest in less well known medical conditions and a passion for the rights of people with mental and physical disabilities. As my 17 year old daughter has autism amongst other diagnosis. I continued watching your channel however because of your very obvious love, deep connection and commitment for each other. Something that I still don't have in my life even though I'm now 43. I love love and am so very pleased for any two people that find each other and have a happy committed life together. The genuine ease and banter between you guys is beautiful and something I whole heartedly believe can not be faked. I wish you both all the luck and happiness in the word for the future and I'm happy that you laugh of some of the ridiculous comments you have had of people. To my mind it is pure and simply jealousy. Take care and please keep doing what your doing your videos make me smile and Shane really makes my laugh with his quick witted dry sense of humour. I live with a rare nerve disorder that causes extreme pain and has caused me to become medically disabled. I was CONVINCED nobody would be able to see past my health issues to want to date me when this happened to me. You guys have given me hope back in my life that there are still good people out there who aren’t so superficial. Thank you for living your lives so honestly out in the open. You are helping more people than you even know.

As a disabled guy, who suffered for a while because of peoples ignorance, it is wonderful to see videos like this! You guys are an inspiration. My disability is not of the body, but of the mind, I’ve been diagnosed with autism with my little brother, for my mom’s kinda crappy surprise if you’d ask me, and it was always tough. I had no way of making a living in my home country, Brazil, cause I need a bit of help in some points and the way it works back there is if you have a disability, doesn’t matter which one, you can barely do simple stuff. They assume we are not capable of living our lives to the fullest. With my parents sacrifice, we’ve been in a immigration process to Portugal and it’s hard. I am a licensed artist, character designer/modeler/sculptor, speak both my mother language and English fluently and still if my family does not gamble with everything we got, i won’t have a chance in life!
Going through all that, I found your channel, and it’s what gave me strength that everything me and my family are doing might very well lead to the kind of happiness that you guys transpire! So just thank you, and congrats!

We're an interabled couple but we keep our lives pretty private, which opens the doors to people not believing I'm disabled if it ever comes up. Sometimes I have your videos playing in the background as I go about my day, cleaning or whatnot. Ya'll have great energy and hearing your jokes and laughter from another room makes me feel at ease.
