A lot of people in the weightlifting community suggest that s large neck causes sleep apnoea.
I found that although it might,if you're "fit" in cardiovascular sense,it doesn't seem to affect it as much..

@@ThePitPony Yeah heard that too several times from bodybuilders. But I think for the average joe it will never be a problem since the bodybuilders will grow unnormal thick necks due to there steroid usage and excessive hypertrophy training. Like mentioned before in the comments they don't balance their training.

I like the videos you guys do together as they always seem to have the exact excercises that have worked for me over the years.
I’m 51 years old and in very good shape for my age….I still get smiles from the college girls.
I got whiplash years ago from getting rear ended in a car when some deep did a last minute turn with no warning and have had neck pain and stiff mobility issues ever since.
Although I have been able to use these exact resistance exercises for quite some time.
I always stretch the neck in each position prior to work out to get blood flow going then I start out ten seconds of resistance to ten seconds rest then change positions.
I also lay flat in my bed, put a towel on my forehead and use a 25# dumbbell and go from straight neck lying down to touching chin to chest with the weight for 20 reps, same with flip over to belly and raise from flat neck to strath towards my back 20 reps.
Same with lying in each side and doing 20 reps each.
I don’t do the weighted neck excercizes daily …I skip a day between.
I sometimes don’t do them for a while if I get pain which isn’t too often.
You would be amazed at the results.
I also do trap workouts which blend the neck to shoulders really well and I always get comments from people that I’m built like a linebacker.
I’ve gained an inch in my neck in a month after I first started this but I just maintain it without trying to get massive neck.
    Your body will tell you
    When you’re overdoing it.
My doctor actually encouraged it due to my injury since I’m keeping my muscles strong.

Great video, I was a crap boxer but a half decent tight head in rugby. The isometric exercises are something I did daily when I played as were some off the medicine ball exercises (without the ball though). My neck was one of my best weapons in the scrum. When I played Football my coach made us lay down on an elevated surface with our head hanging off the edge so we had to carry the weight of it with the neck and made us rotate the head slowly say yes, say no, tilt it, etc while hanging. By the time pre season was done and we erre entering the official game season we would be doing it with the helmet on. So we had the bars to hold our heads if the neck got too tired, but it was a signifficant extra load. There was a time we even had the helmet on and some additional hand ressistance or a towel or something extra to create even more resistance. My neck started to become wider than my jaw at some point

I had a very serious injury doing acrobatics a few years ago. I did not need surgery because the vertebrae positioned themselves after the impact, but I did need a lot of planned rest, physiotherapy and a long time of rehabilitation.
For rehabilitation, they told me that it was extremely dangerous to do any type of exercise that involved the head as a moving part with loads of any kind, for example with elastic bands, if it was not under the supervision of an expert on the subject.
Instead I followed the recommended approach, which was to work the neck muscles indirectly, with upper body exercises with weights that engage the neck muscles. In general, many exercises that involve get the scapulae closer.
To this day I can say that I not only have a very strong neck but also shoulders and back and my posture in general has improved a lot. Although I will have the injury for the rest of my life, I no longer feel any pain. The best part is that I returned to acrobatics stronger than ever.

you can do side neck lying down with your head, raised of the ground, while reading

  • @Finvarra
    @Finvarra Рік тому +11

This raised surface thing is very interesting, I may try it for the tilting motion.
I recently started using one of those neck harnesses briefly mentioned, I find the best way is to connect a carabina and loading pin rather than directly looping the chain into the weight plates, and while many people depict it leaning forwards I grasp the chain in my hands and stand up straight, which significantly increases my feeling of control, as well as pulling the neck into a more stretched position for gentle slow reps with the plates resting against my thighs so no swinging to worry about. It's very good but not for beginners because if you're still in the phase of mistaking muscle distress for pain you will be very alarmed by the sensation, it's like lower back training but at least twice as terrifying. You need to trust your body awareness and muscle control enough to tolerate that alarming sensation before you can make serious gains.

The reason why is not recommended to do the same exercise as Mike is because of the compression it causes to the vertebraes.
I would just lay down on a bench, grab a light weight(light barbell/ dumbbell plates) and put it on the side of the face I want my neck to work for(hold it with your hands, do not try and balance it)
If I lay down with my belly up, I hold it on top of my forehead and start flexing my neck up.
If my belly is down, on the back of my head and lift my head up.
While sideways hold it next to the temple and lift.

One thing I’d add is eye direction, if you’re looking forward but turning your head you’re more likely to get an injury. You want to start by looking as far into the direction your head is going to end up and once you’re looking that way then move your head angle, and again stop for a moment at the new angle, look back at where you want to go, then move back to neutral. Like having your eyes on the ball you want your eyes on your destination

    Great video.
Just to discuss a little about the link between neck thickness and obstructive sleep apnea. While there is a correlation between OSA and neck thickness, this is likely due to neck adiposity not likely due to neck muscle. If neck muscle were a major risk factor then we would anticipate higher rates of OSA in younger individuals with a decreased rate in older people (who generally carry less muscle). This is the opposite of what is observed.
The pathophysiogy of OSA really hinges on reduced laminar airflow through a floppy, compressed, tortuous airway. While fat would compress the airway, muscle would most likely not do so and might even add increased tone to the airway/neck's anatomy and thus might even be protective.

Best to develop neck strenght without too much thickness.
Best is for your neck, arms, and calfs, to have the same measurement (symetry)

Make some long custom rags from whatever, make eyelets with a cheap presser from harbor freight, then fix some elastic to between a board via a hook and the rag (grommets), and very very slowly--- roll against the resistance.
Use the weakest elastic you can find and it will be plenty.

Thanks! Ive never seen any of these. The neck workout i do is put those hand weights together and put them around my forehead and get on a workout bench then lay back enough where my head is dangling back a bit,and rock my head up and down for 2 mins and 30 seconds. I saw vladamir klistcho (not sure if i spelled it right) doing something similar, and ive noticed this working great,i don't feel any injuries and have noticed my neck improved alot, what do you think tony is this a good method?

Whilst these exercises are ok, if you really want to work neck then shrugs with heavy dumbbells, rolling neck bridge and headstands are what you need to do daily. I do and have no neck pain because I worked up to bridge with headstands and then I added shrugs. Finally added bridge. Also reps with a weighted neck harness. Tyson did shrugs.

simple and effective. if the average joe were to jump under 500lbs and try to bench press it it would probably be the last time they trained for awhile (or ever), yet we don’t consider bench press to be an inherently dangerous movement. the same logic can be applied to any loaded movement.

I can't find the video / time stamp, but Mike tyson was on the Joe Rogan podcast and blamed neck bridges for killing his neck over the years. I think Neck Bridges can strengthen the muscles, unfortunately they also cause a huge amount of stress and wear on the cervical spine. As a general principle it's better to keep the spine in neutral position when doing strength and conditioning (similar to what is done in the video).
