      Thank you! This is something that gets missed a lot when people know about Rocky through cultural osmosis and the sequels instead of the source material. The original egg drinking scene is disgusting - intentionally so - with raw yolk running down his chin and stuff. It's not supposed to be cool or anything. It's clearly supposed to show how poor and dead-end the character is.

    Been boxing as an amateur in Eastern Europe since '02, reaching the end of a long career soon and making the transition to coaching...During my time i fought many great amateurs that went on to become known pro boxers and now i wanna pass the knowledge i acquired to the younger generation...But the simple reason that started all that, was a boxing movie from 1976 that my father brought home from a video club back in 1998, called Rocky...So it doesnt really matter how accurate the movie was (it wasn't), it will always hold a special place in my heart because everytime i see it it reminds me how i fell in love with boxing...

      I think every martial artist around the world holds a special place in their soul for this movie. For me it was watching the Rocky movies on a warm saturday morning with my Mom, going to my grandparents house to watch the de la Hoya fights (my grandpa's favorite fighter), and then me taking up boxing and muay thai in college as a way to connect with my Grandpa in the afterlife, and discovering so much about what I'm capable of. The movie teaches you to be the person who puts in the long hours, the thousands of repetitions, to humble yourself and do the things that others are 'too good' for. It's a movie that is nourishment for the soul.

Just like in martial arts, it's not wise to order a beginner fighter to break 10 tough and broad wooden tables in his first day of training. It takes time and master the easier conditioning exercises like knuckle push ups, knuckle plank, go around the training center only using knuckles (plank position), hit the heavy bag, etc

    I LOVE the meat hitting part because it establishes the differences between Rocky and Apollo. When Rocky arrives to do his training with the meat, Paulie surprises him with a news crew that wants to film him training, so he gives them a "demonstration" by hitting the meat. Cut to Apollo Creed's office, Duke, Apollo's main trainer is watching the news footage of Rocky training intensely. He seems surprised/nervous after seeing Rocky smash the ribs of those hanging meats. He calls out to Apollo "Hey Champ, I think you outta come take a look at this boy you're gonna be fighting...it looks like he means business..." but Apollo is completely out of it. He's setting up talk shows and sending flowers to his wife and just messing around. "Yeah yeah, Duke, I mean business too..." he says still half distracted. Duke frowns and turns back to the Rocky footage. Rocky has completed training and his fists are now covered in blood. The News Reporter holds up Rocky's bloody fist and signs off...almost as if to tell Duke "This is going to happen to Apollo if he doesn't get his head in the game!" It's my favorite scene from the movie!

    One thing this video touched on was when you are working out, whether it be for boxing, or just in general getting or staying in shape. Much of it is mental. You need discipline in order to keep the regimen going as well as executing the training properly. But most importantly, you need to feel great while doing it. Feel tough, feel badass, feel strong, and thus be motivated. This was one of the things I learned from the Army. To be badass you have to feel badass, you have to experience it, you have to believe it. You can't run 10 miles if you don't believe you can. If you believe you can run 20, what is 10 miles? Its only half! Its amazing what a little motivation will do.
    Motivation can be infectious as well. Pump up those around you, those working with you, and you will see gains as well. This isn't some feel good measure, this stuff is real. I won't lie, when I was a young soldier and got all these speeches and pep talks in formations, it seemed corny, it seemed almost like I was being treated like a kid in elementary school PE. But looking back, it allowed me to do things that would otherwise be unimaginable.

    Chicken chasing absolutely improves legwork, endurance, and flexibility. It's dynamic too, you must use your brain and adapt on the spot to changing scenarios instead of repetition, you are trying to outsmart the chicken (harder to do than it sounds). I did a lot of it growing up. Bad thing is some chickens get legitimately hyper stressed from it. Others don't mind as much and will eat right out of your hand after you catch them. Also not covering their face like they should because in bare knuckle fighters try to cut your face up so you struggle to see and they can land one in and also get points for obvious damage. Gloves do really cut and the damage shows up later in the fight or in the morning. Regarding behind-the-head pressing:
    It's hazardous but not dangerous if you respect the hazard. If your shoulder mobility is sufficient that you can let the bar rest on the shoulders without it stretching the joints then you have basically nothing to worry about - if it does stretch then gentle moderate weight work will open up the shoulders and this will benefit the shoulder in general. Doing it fast should be fine so long as control is not sacrificed, but the way Rocky is shown to be doing them while exhausted, that's probably quite dangerous, it is not a 'fail safe' movement. That being said, if you're able to do the weight as cardio or conditioning it's probably an acceptable risk as long as you are experienced with the movement.

      I used to do behind the head pressed for the reasons you described. But once the weight hits 250+lbs, it doesn't really matter how slowly or controlled you do it, it's just too much pressure on that shoulder joint in a position where it is not optimally stable. I never had an injury, but I swapped to the front press because that weight was slowly wearing my shoulders down.

    Yeah, I think most of us tried the egg drinking in our youth. My coach went mental when I told him I was feeling sick beacuse I drank eggs like Rocky. He sent me home, and made me do twice as much training the next day as punishment for 'being bloody stupid'. As for the chicken, I think I read once that Ali had his brother (or friend, I can't remember?) throw stones at hi, and he dodged them. I always found that an interesting exercise - though I never tried it.

      This is all dependant on your mobility. Biggest stereotypes are:"don't do behind neck shoulder press", "don't let your knees go over your toes while squatting" etc.
      As I said all depends from your mobility, and first thing any PT should do first is to check your mobility, anatomy, muscle strength etc. Meanwhile when I got to the gym, I see they have some training plan, which they give to their proteges and don't really care about things I mentioned.
      It's even worst. I can see most of these people have bad form and range reduction due to muscle tensions etc., and PT instead of pointing these and fix, they are giving them machine exercises where they only deepen their bad form.

      @nahor88 Рік тому

      @@nieczerwony Yeah you're pretty much correct... I started lifting back in college, and of course I couldn't afford any sort of personal training. All the exercises I did were based on what my friends did. One of them was "swimmer's curls" where you lift a dumbbell straight up in the air and twist it on the way down. Now I think I've permanently fucked up my shoulder mobility from years of doing it.

    One thing Tony, Rocky was supposed to have bad form and poor guard. He was a slugger and the amount of hits he took played into the storyline in the later movies. Stallone wasn't necessarily showing bad form for the camera, it was part of the character.

      @Jake Collins Really? Have you even watched the movies? He leads with his head, even does it intentionally against Drago. The amount of punishment he takes is commented on in every movie and he has problems because of it throughout the later movies. It's a plot device, he didn't even stop fighting flat footed until the third movie when Apollo started training him. He won because of the amount of punishment he could and would take, not because he was a great boxer.

I grew up on these movies but never really saw the level of strength and actual ability of Sly to partake in and endure the proper training involved for a fight. The areas I agree with the Rocky films on are; Roadwork, core work, speed ball (thanks for showing me how to hit the speed ball btw), med balls. I personally liked Rocky 3's training montage btw while Mick made Rocky a warrior, Apollo and Duke made Rocky a boxer.

    @9:29 Yes behind the head barbell press is very bad since it puts your shoulder in a position that is not stable and aligned with the socket that the shoulder sits in. It also pinches the nerve endings and tendons within your shoulder. Often this results in shoulder impingement, which can lead to many future problems and isn't easily fixable. This is very common in baseball players because of the way they have to throw the ball.
