I still remember two things my instructor told me when I learned to drive in 1980 - "know whats behind you but DON'T worry about them" and "The bigger vehicles are the more space you give em'. After 40 years on the road driving for a living etc I swear by these rules! Keep up the fantastic content mate and keep on trucking!

I suppose as long as everything is safe, secure and working properly then the only thing to worry about is the time it takes and disruption to your schedule. When you see the damage a truck can do it's not a bad thing vehicles are being checked.

Problem is it's all up to their opinion, if like me you drive for a small company and use old trucks they could pick anything up as a problem. I got a warning from the police (not the DVSA thankfully) because i had a pin that wasn't seating properly, it had been like that for two years and was a non issue but yet it's my problem when my boss knew about it and refused to get it fixed. Companies expect you out every single day without exception and if not you get reprimanded, you'll be the one getting fined though just because you happen to be in that truck on that day

You’ll always get a bad driver out of a bunch Luke. I do multi-drop deliveries to members of the public and I always get “You can’t park there!”, “You’re blocking the road!”. Tough shit! I’m doing my job, I’m parked where I am for less than 10 minutes. And I’m never fully blocking roads, people just don’t know how wide their cars are and refuse to go through a passable gap. A lot of people have no patience these days. Take no notice and soldier on 👍

It seems to me that the lack of services for truck drivers is world wide. There are never enough services, lack of parking, clean showers and toilets and good food. On my straight truck, 40 ft Volvo Vnl 780, I mounted lead floods on the back of the cab and in front of the drive wheels. Helps backing at night.

I'm with you supporting the DVSA, they have a tough job to do. Their Norwegian equivalent often set up and flag in every truck passing, all get a cursory glance over and weight check, some are pulled for closer checks. Not unusual to hear they've done a proper check on 20 trucks and 10 end up being issued a prohibition on use there and then, and half the others with have significant issues to fix withing a set timescale, but are allowed to continue. Seeing what they stop, I'm totally behind them. Rigid truck å bogie trailer combo, approved to a max 50 ton weight, stopped between 2 subsea tunnels (steep inclines) found 25 ton overweight, and with brake defects on 3 of 6 axles.

I think ur fab. Really nice guy. I was HGV 1 driver in 90s and 00s yep not many female drivers around then. No sat navs and no auto gear boxes, we had range changers and spliters. I used to hate going to drops in London, with London AtoZ in one hand steering wheel in other lol when we got stopped for tacho and weight checks we'd call it the ministry and if there was a check ahead you'd hold ur round tacho holders up to warn other drivers. I think must be so better with the new card things. Does the card tell you how much time you got left and how much rest time is needed ? There used to be 3 classes 3, 2 and 1, but beleve this is changed to just 2 and 1. Also am I right you can't just go for your class one and you have to do class two first ? I might be wrong. I did my class one around 1986.

Tailgating is one of my pet hate's I used to drive a 7.5t vehicle for our local hospital it was governed to fifty six miles an hour the amount of gestures I got from idiots if I had a pound would be a millionaire, my old instructor told me monitor the vehicle behind but don't worry he hits you it's his fault, my other pet hate is driver's on a motorway who are going slow but when you go to overtake speed up like it's a game

Just wonder if that tipper driver had a proper licence. My hubby was caught speeding by a camera one time, and he was given the choice of 3 pts or one of those courses. Obviously, he chose the course. Anyway, the bloke who was running it stated that if you get an idiot on your backend, do not tap your brakes so that you put on your brake lights, but to slow down very slowly, but not using your brakes, just take your foot of the accelerator, and the person behind you will also start to slow

Hi Luke, all good so far, when I drove those sort of roads back in 2006 and 19 yrs prior, the speed limit for trucks was 40, has it gone up..., I doubt it mate lol.

As of 6th April 2015 the National Speed Limits for HGVs [defined as 7.5 tonnes maximum vehicle weight when loaded] were amended in England and Wales. Scotland stayed at the hisorical limits.
      England and Wales:
      Single carriageway 50 MPH
      Dual carriageway 60 MPH **
      Motorway 60 MPH **
      Scotland:
      Single carriageway 40 MPH
      Dual carriageway 50 MPH
      Motorway 60 MPH **
** Note: Construction and Use regulations specify that this class of vehicle is fitted with a speed limiter restricted to 90 km/h [56 MPH] So although up to 60 MPH is not breaking the speed limit - thus no points on your licence or fine, for speeding - it is breaking the CU regs - thus points on your licence and fine, for breach of CU regs. Plus the operator of the vehicle gets done too.
Note also, that this speed 90 km/h reveals this was a piece of EU legislation that was brought in upon joining the EU. Here's an example of a Brexit "benefit" that we have not benefitted from - in seeing it harmonised with the national speed limits.

I got stopped by VOSA, as it was then, a few years ago when I was driving a tractor for the County Council. The inspector quite correctly flagged up the missing LHF indicator and side light assembly which I had broken off that very morning and had stowed in the cab to prevent further damage. He issued a probition notice, helped me to carry out a temporary repair then issued a removal of the prohibition notice. This was fine and I went on my way thinking no more of it. I was very surprised to get a huge rollocking from my manager for not informing them of the incident who were not impressed that they had another black mark on the O Licence!

I could tell you some stories about them.
They're under orders to do quotas and pressured into getting as many prosecutions as possible. How do I know?
It's a long story but I met a vosa officer in frenchay hospital one year. His son was in ICU same time as my wife and while waiting in the rest room we got talking. He told me they were under pressure to fill quotas, now neither of us had met previously, but it turns out that I had heard about him from a way back. He was one of the guys who falsified the document evidence for his nephews trial which got him off a jail sentence. He died about a month ago. I know his son and he filled in some details about the case. Let me know if your interested.

I drive a telehandler on the road, i let people pass as soon as practical, when you have impatient idiots trying to overtake in stupid places they will have an accident & you will be involved in it, they are not worth it. why do people behave like this in huge vehicles if you were walking down an alleyway would they be walking behind you breathing down your neck? its never happend to me.
