I used to deliver bread by the trailer-load to Morrisons where they would back you onto a bay, then you had to hang your keys up in the warehouse and sit back in the cab - you couldn't even use the toilet. Hanging up your keys meant you didn't even have the radio in the cab - they caught me on that once and next time I hung my car keys on the hook . . . I was there 5 hours one day waiting to get my paperwork back. No wonder there's an apparent shortage of drivers - I'm just glad I'm retired.

No wonder goods are expensive in the shops !! As the industry is incompetent and hasn't actually caught up with modern technology relying on jobs worth individuals and antiquated systems . This results in wasted time hanging about , missed delivery slots and has a knock on domino effect , making other deliveries late as well
The answer is streamlining and automating the system.
As far as paperwork is concerned this should be digitalised and linked to sophisticated dedicated scanners, auto email, photo iD driver/lorry to prove delivery, then onto next delivery . It is not impossible and with GPS etc lorries can be tracked easily.
A similar system the AA employs on their tracking app could be easily modified
The drivers base automatically alerted by email etc, then linked to accounts.
The delivery drop timed and the GPS position of the lorry to be more efficiently managed .
      The driver

If they're that bothered about making sure everything is present and correct, maybe they should tip the wagons themselves, then they'd be able to check each pallet as it comes off the trailer.....

Thats the reason drivers unload because it saves them a fortune paying their own unloaders. I tipped in many lidl.s rdc,s but never had a big time delay.I found runcorn + belvedere were ok mostly.worse drop i ever had was in willenhall had sausages in boxes and they counted every single sausage ha ha.happy days get out of it all when cpc came out.

Took a load of cheese to a Sainsburys RDC. About 300 different types of cheese. Loady said if you help us count and check every pallet you will be away in about 3 hours, if you dont it will be 6 hours. RDC's I've s*@t em.

tipping is a very quick process esp. with a FLT or faster PPT, whereas checking can take minutes per pallet, normally not the same person to tip as to check, checking requures more care & is higher responsibility. Checking errors can cost thousand but tipping errors not so much

I used to have to deliver to these dumps. One day while tipping the lad on the next bay was tipping lemonade and the pallets were shrink wrapped and the pallets would stick together like shit to a blanket, any way one of these pallets were proving hard to get off and the shrink wrap gave up the ghost and the contents went everywhere .They made the driver restock the pallet with no help from their staff, i felt sorry for the lad and gave him a hand to restock the pallet and shrink wrap together. He then proceeded to place the pallet in the required lane in the warehouse and then what he did next was priceless .He walked round the back of the pallet and cut the shrink wrap with a stanly knife, so when the guy came over on the fork lift he went to lift the pallet and it promptly fell all over the floor.
I have also seen it when they made a container driver get on the back and pump the pallets of wine to the back, all he did was let one pallet go off the back and smash all over the floor. They soon asked him to get down and sit back in his cab. HAPPY DAYS !!!

My record at Lidl so far is 4h30m to tip 25 tonnes of firewood. The pallets were rammed in the back of a container and could only be pulled out one by as the cling wrap was sticking to the neighbouring pallet. Then one of the pallets fell over. Drivers are expected to restack. No help offered. Hate delivering to Lidl RDCs.

Hi Raymond,I agree lidl and aldi are the only ones to DEMAND drivers to tip themselves,im lucky my agency knows not to ask me to go to firm knowing there is a tip there,a friend was told by asda Grangemouth sit there and they will get to him, after 8hrs .50mins he shut curtain and then was told that he was next, can you see what asda, morrisons, coop etc would say if you asked for there flt keys !!!!!! DRIVERS DELIEVER ONLY,what next expecting us to put items onto the racks or even to load there own motors,I know its extreme but I'm only pointing out what they might want next, new blood won't do it,make my blood boil to think other driver tip themselves.

Like you said, they’ll accept the delivery regardless of it being complete, they not going to tell you to reload it and take it away again.

@@lukecinahgv Luke I know you enjoy the exercise and all that, and good on you for wanting to lose a few kilos, but it is the principle of the thing, your time is just as important to you, as the next bloke. If you are stuck in a waiting game, then your boss doesn't make as much money nor can you, by accepting the next job. I'm not sure if you have a union, and being Britain you should have, but here in Australia most truck drivers are (Both owner operated and salaried) and their union frowns heavily on such practices. You gotta talk to your union about this to get this lazy practice stopped.

We try our best when loading grain lorries on the farm, rarely we don't fill up within 5 minutes of the lorry arriving. Drivers time is way to valuable to be wasting it. Maybe the supermarkets need to be compensating haulage companies for the delays caused, might make them think twice.

Rather than get frustrated at the inefficiencies turn it to my advantage. Bit of gaming to break up the day and make a nice break to the driving.

Those big companies work in mysterious ways :P
I used to work for Heuveltrans in The Netherlands and we deliverd fruits and vegetables to a big supermarket in The NL One day one of their RDC's came up with the idea to have our drivers report to the counter were all slow moving goods drivers had to report too already. This caused to have all our loads to get delayed and it messed up their planning. I think it took a week or two and we could run straight to "our" doors again to just walk inside and ask the guys there where they want the stuff.
Or that time I HAD to wait for 2 pallets of cheese to come in before I could leave for my last delivery on saturday afternoon to a different supermarkets RDC. The pallets came in an hour and a half late. I let the supermarkets dispatchers know I was leaving, they even called me back to say i had the wrong papers with me, changed them. Around 4pm I got to the RDC where they told me I was late and I couldnt deliver.. Called their dispatch again.. waited for an hour and was told to take the whole load back with me.. because they insisted i waited for the 2 pallets in the first place..
    As said.. mysterious ways.. :P

The Government needs to step in and say to the company's if you hold a driver for more then lets say 2 hours then the haulage company can charge you £1000 plus lose of earnings. Not only will that sort out the loading and unloading problems but probably the driver shortage problem. I dreed to think how many hours a day are lost with drivers sitting on bays waiting. im currently just a 7.5tonne driver and i have the same problem...... Love the videos mate. Merry Xmas..... Start a partition and send it to the government think it can be done online now. you never know you got a good platform to start it from....

    a) having to wait about for someone else, or;
    b) being told to come back at X time, and then having to wait about to be (un)loaded, etc.
    c) being told to drive to somewhere else to do a "safety induction" before they will (un)load.
    Currently a three-way tie 😶

What amazed me was you tip then go to collect the empties. These were in an area of returns. The amount of waste was unbelievable. Everything you can imagine rows and rows of waste. From electrical just everything you buy. It is all binned. I asked a bloke what happens to this stuff. The electrical has the cord cut and skipped same as the rest just binned. Hi Luke. Some really new buildings in that Canary Wharf drop with a lot of international banks. Absolutely brilliant when you get to these companies when they are running so late. If there was a penalty charge for delay I bet you would not have to wait so long. Pathetic mess around in those warehouses. They should be checking load off as it comes out of the truck. They should be fined definitely for any delay. A nice 2.5 hour fine would work. No wonder people dont want to deliver to RDC,s. Stay safe and take care and hope you have a better next few days after that RDC debacle.

You’re quite right about needless delays at RDCs completely messing up the day’s plan. You know from your tipper days that they often charge waiting time after just 15 minutes, something similar should apply for general haulage, say after the first hour of waiting, haulage companies should charge for waiting time, it’s the only way things will ever change. Additionally, some hauliers need to be more realistic in their planning, you only have to watch a few you tubers to see why.

With the HGV driver shortage hauliers should be in a position to pick and choose customers - not the other way around. The first haulier to start charging a waiting fee, say after 1 hour, will lose some business short term but gain in the long term. Customers may not be happy but once the realise said haulier has spare haulage capacity they will come around very quickly.

It really isn't just the HGV industry that has those issues, though they may be more obvious there. In my line of work, if I get a delivery, I am supposed to check everything before signing for it. Apparently, the reason is that if I sign to say a delivery is made, I am signing to say it is all there, which makes it harder to argue later that it isn't (regardless of whose fault it is). The problem I get is that no-one tells me what is being delivered, so I really can't check it.

The reason they do this is because they know they can get away with it. Demurrage should be paid after 75 minutes of arriving on site. I deliver to Aldi doing chilled, and we work on drop and drive rules. I just put the stuff in the line, collect any paperwork from previous deliveries and go. Been doing it like that for years.

hang a number of scanners in the storage station, the driver scans every barcode of every pallet he/she delivers, this goes straight to the main office.
Next to the loading dock inside there is a printer, which immediately prints out what you have delivered (this is for the driver) and he can leave immediately.
And if something is wrong, or something is missing, they just contact the place where the goods come from, and possibly the company that delivered it, whereby the driver can demonstrate what has been delivered with the printout.
Or they have to tip everything themselves, problem solved.

Question is if you injure yourself by doing the tipping job yourself when you are a driver not a wharehouseman , then what about loss of work time on sick ? Who pays ? Also it was admitted that this takes longer so ultimatelty your company is paying for extra nights out , also tme is money and its the customer who ultimately pays for a service which is not provided !!
Being a former union shop steward what is your drivers union having to say about all this ???
I note there are trucks which carry their own forklifts so these go equipt, but in your case you are operating their equipment i suppose you are liable for the care of this too.
I would be interested in some answers please and comments from drivers .

Hi Luke, I think RDC's should be charged a fined when they make drivers wait too long, payable to the transport company. Some give a time frame of 15 mins before and 15 mins after delivery, or you can be turned away. I've been behind a 10 truck wait. This isn't helping the shortage of deliveries. They are just too powerful. They just like a constant stream of trucks, so they earn maximum profit!

    • @fredpuntdroad8701
      @fredpuntdroad8701 2 роки тому +1

That's exactly the problem right there. People make and accept bad contracts and then pass the problems down to drivers. If I look at my own experience, we charge € 150 per hour every hour, which is a lot.
Had it happen somebody no-showed due to carelessness. The client raised all kinds of hell about it and the mayor himself apologised and ensured (with said careless civil servant in the CC) that this would never happen again. Even working with large bureaucratic companies we immediatly get fast-tracked with direct phone numbers etc because they're aware that it's expensive to have our calls passed around 4 times while you wait half an hour.
Giant letting corporation and you're calling as a tenant? Hope you've got 20 minutes to spare. Same corporate bureaucracy but we call when they hire us, typically no more than 30 seconds to get through.
Court session delays too. Clients typically get very antsy and hassle the bailiffs when court sessions are delayed and they have both us and a lawyer waiting around in a corridor thinking 'drinking coffee at 100+ per hour, sign me up'
If we worked to one price for the whole service no doubt there'd be a lot who would've made us wait to no end.
People think with their wallets. If it doesn't cost to make truckers wait, they will have a lot of people who feel important enough to make them wait.

Hi Luke, about your rant at the end. I absolutely agree like what would they do to the driver if a pallet was missing? Like you didn't load it it's not your fault. The driver literally can't do anything so there's no point in him hanging around. You don't manage other people's jobs to see if there's any damage e.t.c. I am thinking of joining the industry when I'm old enough to drive. I would get annoyed if I was stuck somewhere for 3 hours and they Don't apologise, come out to you and tell you what your wait is or just so un organised they lost the paperwork and don't want to tell you. Drivers should not be dealing with paperwork. This is inefficient and costly for the industry. Pallets should have electronic tags attached and the tags linked to an inventory of the items on the pallet. When a pallet enters or leaves a warehouse the tag should be automatically scanned by the warehouse stock control system (not by people) to track and account for stock in transit and stock delivered. There needs to be national or global standards to automate a solution for carriers to link into. Whilst the pallets are automatically tracked, driver should still be able to download an app to there phone or tablet to view their load if they need tool. If there are companies out there that is interested in a solution then get in touch.
