You are a very hard worker, no doubt about it. The second part of the old joke, “are you working hard or hardly working “ does not apply to you whatsoever. Not only do you work hard but you are an excellent teacher. Thanks for the video.
I use the aquarium water treatment to make my tap water safe. Tap water is just so much easier than keeping up with distilled/rain water. My plants don’t seem to mind
I'm exactly the same - if I have a plant I can't get to grips with, I put it in pon 😆 It totally saved my Syngonium mini pixie, and I have some variegated strawberry begonia babies that are going amazing in it (I always eventually rot the roots off the soil ones, however careful I am). I love how low-maintenance it is. My other subtrate hack is tree fern fibre. Worth every cent. That stuff is magic and promotes new root growth like crazy.
Loved this video. I lost my platinum i had just began my journey . My mameii started dying i chopped and put in moss with restaurant container. I now have 4 babies. So proud. Spaghnum is great. Purchased from etsy the plants were ridiculously tiny. I put them in moss two days ago looking at this video tells me to go and squeeze so water out. So please don't think your watering videos are to long. You give out planty wisdom. Thank you
I use Liquid Gold Leaf and it’s awesomeeee. My plants love it, a little goes a long way, works for soil and semi hydro and you can use it with tap water and all my plants love it so much. I loveeee your plant collection and your videos ❤️
I'm not sure what you mean by a plastic cup? I see some people use plastic water bottles but I'm not a fan of them because you have to have the moss filled to the top or it just spills out and I hate having to flip them. I find the globes a lot easier for me!
So you take a plastic cup and poke holes out of the bottom like with a soldering iron and then you put it on the top of your moss pole then fill it with water and it slowly drains out of the holes on the bottom. Probably like the water bottle but with the water a little more slowly released
Melissa, I got the dollar tree plastic water globes and used a 1 1/2” hole saw to drill holes in the top. They're not pretty, but $1.25 vs $20 for 2 glass ones from Amazon is significant I made 11 with one casualty.
Thanks for sharing! I tried to drill into some before but maybe my plastic was too tough lol it was hard to drill them! I really need to go check out dollar tree though!!
I have the "Syngonium Frosted Heart" Beautiful Plant and the leaves size up beautifully🌿what I noticed about "Scindapsus" plants, they don't like to Dry Out, they could totally benefit being in Pon🤷🌿
I just started a couple scindapsus cuttings in Leca, the mother in soil has been ok but not thriving exactly, still growing but it gives yellow leaves sometimes... so far so good

The fertilizer I love is MaxSea. I've tried GT foliage focus but its expensive and didn't last long. I'm sure it's great but I didn't have enough to really evaluate its performance. My Maxsea is also an investment but it lasted me almost 2 years. GT lasted few months only

I love maxsea fert! I’ve about tried them all and Maxsea works great And it’s way more affordable when you have over 200 plants. I liked the GT Foliage Focus but it’s to expensive when you have a lot of plants. I recently started adding fish Sh*t into my weekly routine that’s the actual name. So I’m anxious to see if it does anything!
Another excellent video Melissa! Love every second ✨. Well in another one of your videos I did mentioned which you could try with API stress coat to eliminate chlorine, chloramine and heavy metals. Hopes it helps you like so many of us (reading the comments). The good thing about aquarium conditioners is that they are not dangerous even if you add a little more than the dose indicated on the product to the water. Don't forget to let it sit (I think it was 24 hours) before using the treated water.
Wow so many plants. I definitely would have a hard time in taking care of them and the watering aswell. I probably would choose a substrate that doesn’t need to be water so regularly. Lucky i now only collect plants that are low maintenance and doesn’t need watering until every 3 weeks during the growing seasons. Winter colder seasons i only water once a month.
It definitely can be challenging to care for them all some weeks! I've gotten in a good habit/routine that works for me but downsizing some plants would help which I might do!
I have one but I kept clogging the sprayer with moss 😆 I took the end off to fix it and one of the cats took it and now it doesn't work well. Maybe I will get a new one!!
I love this!! Glad to see you'll be trying API stress coat aquarium water conditioner. I use it too works great make it easier! I don't worry about water on the bottom of pon pot mine have 1in of water its fine. I use calmag, 3 part GH hydroponic flora system, and GH Diamond nector. It is expensive but it goes a long way and last a longtime. 😊
Yes .. I used API as well. My water is so hard and hard on my plants. Plus, I added a water purifier to my kitchen sink. My plants are doing so much better now. I haven't seen any brown edges, crispy tips, or spots. Most of my plants are in semi-hydroponic, soiless diirt, and pon. I truly love watching Melissa videos. She has a heart of gold!!! Love you all ❤

@plantsbymelissa Thank you! Just my opinion, my experience. I'm disappointed with GT foliage is very expensive i used it up quickly 1tsp per liter, vs GH flora 1tsp per gal. Comparing GT foliage vs GH flora, GH is a winner for me.
Hi Melissa! Thanks for another great video! You inspired me to do moss poles! I did 9 yesterday and stopped because I ran out of my mix :( Have you tried just using the upside down water bottles with holes drilled in the caps to water your poles? That seems easier so I will experiment with those. Also, do you use your standard mix for Calathea also? I know they like moisture so wasn’t sure if you adjusted for them? I’m reporting all mine. Some are sad and others are just surviving. I appreciate all your info. It has made caring for plants so much more fun and rewarding!! That store bought soil is all I ever knew and it’s kind of terrible 😂
Thank you!! Stratum is temporary so I only use it to propagate in. Just like using moss or perlite then once I have enough roots I will pot it up. Pon is pretty new to me still but a lot of different plants love it! I will do mostly alocasia and anthurium and some stubborn philos that have been difficult for me to grow in soil. Calatheas love that consistent moisture too! Some people don't want to grow in semi hydro and plus the costs of pon can get expensive if you buy lechuza brand. I was always a soil person so I am glad I am branching out some to try new things. I still love soil and a really chunky mix for moss poles so sometimes I just do whatever I feel in the moment :)

Good morning! I recently purchased Castile soap after watching your videos and was wondering if you rinse the plants off or is it safe to leave the soap on? I’m in North Carolina and I’m getting ready to bring about 40 plants back inside over the next week or two.. I plan on treating them all with the Castile :)
I just leave it on 😬 You can make it more or less diluted if you want to so I don't really get any residue since mine is more diluted. The most important thing is letting it sit for maybe 5 minutes so it can work so you don't want to rinse it off right away. Just the action of hosing off the plant leaves with water can knock so many pests off :)
Melissa iv had that same spots on my plants this summer that went through my collection but i never really found out what it was over fertilizer or fungal just wanted to know what u think it was i had to cut off lots of leaves
I never noticed them before on it so it makes me think it was something fungal or bacterial. Sorry about your plants! I end up cutting a lot of leaves off to reduce spread :(
Hi Melissa, i have a question about the transfer from soil to pon. Didn't the plants get a shock? for example Alocasias. What do you do when switching planting medium? Thanks for your answer! 🤗
Hi - a lot of them I rehabbed in stratum first then transferred over. Stratum to pon does really well and I find moss to pon does well too with the ones I did. The ones from soil I made sure to rinse off all the dirt first but I still had some rot/root shedding with those while they were adjusting to water and growing new roots so it happens!

Hi! Do you not run your central a/c in the house or do you just close all the vents in your plant room? Do you usually always keep the door closed? You mentioned that your plant room was close yo 80 degrees.
Ac runs all the time in the summer :) only one vent and it stays open. Door always stays open for airflow. It’s hot because it’s the south side of the house which gets full sun + I have a ton of grow lights in one small room. The temperature just stays warm in here 🫶🏻
Love it as always! I have a massive infestation of gnats and I think this is my limit and gonna switch slowly to pon... Question, how do you decide which you are rooting in moss and which you're gonna use stratum?
I highly recommend nematodes for fungus gnats. I made a whole video on them not too long ago. I have zero gnats now in my soils. It's soo worth it. I can link it here: ua-cam.com/video/JRW9-CZSou8/v-deo.html For rehabs with root rot I like to use moss, I can give them 100% humidity to help them re root and it works so well. For stratum - I will do cuttings or corms most often. I think either way is fine and sometimes I just decide it the moment :)
@@plantsbymelissa I've seen all the videos 🤣 I'm waiting on nematodes to arrive 😁 thanks for letting me know a out the different mediums and how you choose ❤️
Love your videos, just wondering, what is your Castile soap recipe, I have some but not sure how much and how much water to use in a spray bottle….. thank you😊
Here's the recipe I use: Combine 4 cups Water 1/8 cup Dr. Woods Tea Tree soap 1/8 cup Dr. Woods Peppermint soap 1/2 cup 70% Alcohol 1 1/2 tsp 3% Hydrogen peroxide Shake to combine as using. Spray the leaves to run off, top of soil, nursery pot, cover pot. Clean surfaces. Use monthly to clean leaves or weekly for an active outbreak (3 weeks minimum).
No certain ratio! I just mix some up in my spray bottle lol. It's very diluted so I don't rinse it off or anything. You can use several tablespoons in a gallon if you want to but I just squeeze some haha.
Helloooo! Happy Sunday! Where do you get those water tabs for the humidifier? There’s so many kinds I don’t know what to get but I’ve just been using tap water lol
I'll link what I bought here! www.amazon.com/dp/B08R8GMRD3?linkCode=ssc&tag=onamzmeli0992-20&creativeASIN=B08R8GMRD3&asc_item-id=amzn1.ideas.32F2ADPUC6VOM&ref_=aip_sf_list_spv_ofs_mixed_d_asin
I used to use it and honestly didn't care for it :/ It was before I used slow release but definitely give it a go for yourself! Everyone has their own experiences :)
How do you manage to keep up with the cleaning of humidifier ? i used to use one but then i found out it has to be deep cleaned with bleach every 3 - 5 days because of bacteria and minerals that can grow there, get released in the air and make us sick. Some people apparently were hospitalized because of it.
Sometimes I get lazy with it! I try to clean it out once a week I usually use vinegar but if I noticed mold I might use hydrogen peroxide. I don't like using bleach if I don't have to. The tap water can make it worse so using distilled is better for them but then you have to buy it all the time. I haven't used it in awhile because I didn't need it last year!
I remember the first few months I watched you, I would think about how healthy your plants were. Then all hell broke loose with rot from that soil, fungus, and the flat mites haha. Sorry, not laughing at you, but just thinking of how it is ironic. Thanks for sharing with us and hope none of that happens again.
No, it's the same! It was reused moss another prop I had. I've been using the same moss for awhile now. Some bags are more "woody" than others lol. I love the new Zealand spagmoss brand it's seriously some good quality but I have't bought any in a long time because it's more expensive and I find this cheaper moss to work just the same :)
I can;t reply with a picture but I can link them for you! I get them off amazon. They are glass so you have to be careful I have broken a couple :( www.amazon.com/dp/B085VGXRK1?linkCode=ssc&tag=onamzmeli0992-20&creativeASIN=B085VGXRK1&asc_item-id=amzn1.ideas.27D4Z5CKST4WL&ref_=aip_sf_list_spv_ofs_mixed_d_asin
Yes! It's a silver sword :) I grew this from nodes off of my other plant I had. It randomly started yellowing and I had to chop it all back. Figured I would give it one more go to try and grow it. It seems more finicky lol but I lovee the color!

Here's the recipe I use:
Combine
4 cups Water
1/8 cup Dr. Woods Tea Tree soap
1/8 cup Dr. Woods Peppermint soap
1/2 cup 70% Alcohol
1 1/2 tsp 3% Hydrogen peroxide
Shake to combine as using. Spray the leaves to run off, top of soil, nursery pot, cover pot. Clean surfaces. Use monthly to clean leaves or weekly for an active outbreak (3 weeks minimum).
No certain ratio! I just mix some up in my spray bottle lol. It's very diluted so I don't rinse it off or anything. You can use several tablespoons in a gallon if you want to but I just squeeze some haha.
Helloooo! Happy Sunday! Where do you get those water tabs for the humidifier? There’s so many kinds I don’t know what to get but I’ve just been using tap water lol
I'll link what I bought here! www.amazon.com/dp/B08R8GMRD3?linkCode=ssc&tag=onamzmeli0992-20&creativeASIN=B08R8GMRD3&asc_item-id=amzn1.ideas.32F2ADPUC6VOM&ref_=aip_sf_list_spv_ofs_mixed_d_asin
@@plantsbymelissa thank youuuu!
I'm trying Liqi-Dirt liquid fertilizer. I might have spelled it wrong 😮😊❤
Melissa please try GT fertilizer it’s changed the game for me , I did not like foliage pro at all
36:35 where do you get tissue cultures from?
An Etsy seller gifted them to me :) They're from coastal botanic!
It's been a rough summer!! I hope next year goes better haha. Thanks for still watching and being here! 🥰
1:00:47 that moss looks different, did you change brands?
No, it's the same! It was reused moss another prop I had. I've been using the same moss for awhile now. Some bags are more "woody" than others lol. I love the new Zealand spagmoss brand it's seriously some good quality but I have't bought any in a long time because it's more expensive and I find this cheaper moss to work just the same :)
Just want to add- you want to make fertilizer fresh and never let it sit for more then 24 hours
Do you treat your plants for pests each time you water?
Can you show a pic of the globes you use?
I can;t reply with a picture but I can link them for you! I get them off amazon. They are glass so you have to be careful I have broken a couple :( www.amazon.com/dp/B085VGXRK1?linkCode=ssc&tag=onamzmeli0992-20&creativeASIN=B085VGXRK1&asc_item-id=amzn1.ideas.27D4Z5CKST4WL&ref_=aip_sf_list_spv_ofs_mixed_d_asin
15:54 what plant is that? Silver Sword??
Yes! It's a silver sword :) I grew this from nodes off of my other plant I had. It randomly started yellowing and I had to chop it all back. Figured I would give it one more go to try and grow it. It seems more finicky lol but I lovee the color!
Can I use beneficials for spider mites if I’ve used systemic insecticide? I don’t know if the systemic will kill the beneficials. 😩
Yes you usually want to wait about 4 weeks after you have treated your plants with the systemic before you release the beneficials
Yes, like the other commenter said you have to wait several weeks. It can definitely harm the good bugs :)
👏💓😊
