      Agreed, I think overall the new color grading is better, but in some shots it's "too natural" looking. Like some of the images just ended up being a beige/grey flat looking image, instead of having a vibrant pop. I feel like some images would have been better somewhere in the middle, where the new 4K coloring just looks like the more modern aesthetic of just making everything brown and grey.

      If you watch this movie on a proper calibrated screen with hdr it actually looks very colorful and different compared to this video. He probably lost some colors with the hdr tonemapping. And also Don't forget that our screen are not able to fully push the colors of 4k movies yet so basically this movies will look even more colorful over time when screens will be able to reach the rec2020 standart. This master is made to last long like most 4k movies.

      @@carrotsmoker9901 I absolutely DO think that the colour grading in the 4K Edition is more pleasant and very much needed in some places, but where it isn't, it's horrid. I'm also disappointed they didn't do a real 4K scan. At least I think so, I don't really see a difference there. Touch-up cgi here and there and fixing parts where the resolution is acting up (maybe it's just my TV, I don't know) would have sufficed. Maybe that's impossible, but it shouldn't be (she said, whilst knowing nothing about scanning film or rendering cgi).
      I'm one of those boring people who utterly dislike discussing Tolkien's intent, but I'm making kind of an exception now because I think I should be allowed at least a little hypocrisy now and then: yes, mythology, as you say, yet it's a mythology with Fell beasts and Ents. If he wanted your standard "re-writing medieval times"-fantasy he would've written that, but he didn't. There are wonders and magic in his stories. Of course, to someone living in Middle-Earth, what is natural to them looks natural to them, but that's not the case for the reader or audience member. We need to feel that Gandalf's fireworks are magic, because we already know how real fireworks look, and if they looked like that in the movies, it would be pretty boring. And can one actually talk about what colour tones are the natural choice for the flames of a Balrog?
      Furthermore, if I'm to be even more boring, in a practical sense, we use colours to convey more than, well, colour. The blue tint is cold, the greener grass is welcoming and warm, the glowing light in a vision makes it emotionally appealing, as I find this black and white reminds me of a "before colour TV"-look. If it's fantasy, it's perfectly fine to turn it up a notch. We do it all the time anyway, when we need something unnatural to make it feel natural. My pet-peeve, since absolutely no one asked, is when they put spinach or artificial colouring in pistachio ice cream to make it look tasty. It's not a fantasy elf slushie, it's ordinary ice cream, dammit! But yeah if we want caviar to feel special, we want it be red or black (again, not liking this either, always trying to avoid it, but there it is).
      When I imagine the mythology of my own country I imagine Oden's horse to look like glowing steel, I imagine the rocks and mountainsides to be almost black; sharp and unwelcoming, the halls of Valhall bathing in a warm, yellow-ish light, I imagine the fields to be grayish-dark green, like some mix between silver and moss. That wouldn't be at all natural, but if someone made a movie about Midgård and everything looked like it does outside my window, I most certainly wouldn't watch it, I'd look outside my window. No eight-legged horse, which is a major drawback, but at least it's free of charge.
      (OK, I realise that I basically wrote a novel, but I thought your point was interesting and my brain started to do that cool thinking-thing, so I went all in, sorry.)

      @@femto8402 Oh, I see. Yes, that would explain why so many examples look different. I realise this is a very stupid question, but if you don't mind: what's the difference between 4K hdr on my phone and on my TV? Despite, you know, the fact that it's just plain stupid to watch the best trilogy ever on your mobile because it's a mobile, not the cinema?

      @TeenageMutantZuckerTurtle 3 роки тому +4

      The HDR replaces the high saturation. HDR+high saturation would look a bit over saturated. It’s still not as vibrant all around, because they’ve been more selective with what gets to be bright and colorful. There are some things that don’t get to be saturated as much, and some things that are saturated way more than previous versions.
      The best example of them making something MORE saturated that I can think of is the Balrog scene. The flame is now so much more warm and aggressive looking, with the contrast between the dark HDR black surrounding it and the much more vibrant red-orange of the fire.

    Okay. This is not quite what I expected. I've always felt the original color grading was a bit too much, especially in some scenes... But removing the look of the film altogether and pushing it the other way, towards natural and sometimes even boring hues... I don't know. That scene where we see Frodo for the first time, reading his book under the tree... It literally took my breath away when I saw it for the first time in the cinema so many years ago. It was that beautiful! The depth, the colors, all the subtle nuances... It was simply magical. But now it just looks blunt to say the least.

    I've heard lots of good things about the 4k edition and (judging from your screenshots) it does look astonishing... HOWEVER, I somehow strongly dislike the new green of the Shire when you look at the transition around 04:38 . Maybe this works as a whole, watching the movie, but here it seems so strange, because to me, life in the Shire always seemed so innocent and carefree; a paradise untouched by evil. And the warm colors in these scenes emphasized that, but now it looks so cold and just... well, too real :/

See if there is a way the videos just pop up as HDR. This video popped up as HGIG HDR, which from what I hear is more of a gaming HDR than regular HDR. I had to turn my Dynamic Tone Mapping off on my LG C9 in order to get the right picture, which is good for HGIG HDR. But for regular HDR, I leave it on because it really does bring out the true nature of the film. Otherwise, the video was awesome!!

    I'm watching this on my Pioneer Kuro. It's only 1080p and SDR but the changes look amazing. I love the 4K Edition at 3:26. Gollums eyes are just so piercing and menacing that are completely lost in the 2012 blu Ray. Skin tones also much more accurate. It seems that with this new 4K version, they wanted to preserve colours more accurately rather than relying on a grade to set the mood. I don't know how other feel but I honestly believe it looks so much better for it. Especially evident in the shot with Saruman.

    Wow. A definite improvement. This is probably the first time that I have ever seen a subsequent edition look BETTER than a previous edition -- of ANY movie. In all other cases, it seems that each new release of every single movie ever made simply results in more and more teal/green filtering being slathered onto previously attractive prints. This is the first time that I have ever seen some excessive digital grading DECREASED. Bravo, and well done.

    So what I'm mostly seeing here is that they applied a new filter to the video and called it 4k? :P I don't know. Not really impressed by this, but it could also be the YT compression that removes a lot of the finer detail that 4k resolution brings.

    I think there are good and bad here. I will acknowledge improvements o er some shots that just look better and then I see some shots that take AWAY from the scene. Arwyn was spared, but imo I don't like how they colored that "glow" the elves had. It was an artistic expression they gave them to let the audience know these are angel-like-beings. I know it's almost nitpicking, but the greenish texture of Minis Ithil being reduced is another example of the world building of Middle Earth being simplified. Like I said the 4K looks awesome but it's the specific artistic shots that appear to be reduced.

    Looking forward to HDR, for sure; but I fear that something might end up feeling like it's been lost with the other adds, specifically the sharpening. The old shots look like paintings. The new ones look like they retroactively adjusted the camera's focus. Better? Maybe... Things jump out and look more 3d than before. But the old, flat, oversaturated colors that gave the older shots that 'painting' look, those shots just feel right somehow.
    Note any face shot, or 11:30 for me right now, Boromir blends right in to this saturated, dreamy blue atmosphere behind him. Then, he jumps right out, dreamy haze gone, distinct from his background -- no longer a participant within a fuzzy dreamlike scene, which was almost distant like a memory, but now is strikingly just an actor in front of a set.
    But, that said, some shots were frustratingly low res previously, mostly fuzzy architecture or atmospheric shots; where I'll be very excited to see them clearly for the first time.

    • @Psycherz
      @Psycherz 3 роки тому

      Update, it's gold. Only complaint is Gollum, he looks CGI now, before it was never obvious. That is not nearly enough of a complaint to not recommend the set.
