@@yestoES355 but star wars didn't cut out scenes from the theatrical edition so they could release the extended edition with an inflated added amount of minutes of footage
I watched all three over the weekend , and they still hold up really really well and don’t seem to feel “old” at all due to its Fantasy setting I guess
Only if you've already seen the theatrical versions. I had never watched lotr until i was 25, when i sat and watched all 3 extended movies one after the other. I had to stop every 5 minutes to google names and locations that the movie acted like we're supposed to know already.

Gotta say the extended editions I got from the early 2000's had exquisite artwork on every bit of the packaging even the discs and the fact you could get the Gollum figure and others with each made them so special and that was even before seeing the beautifully incorporated deleted/extended scenes. I don't think anything will ever compare or better them.
Yup! We're that old now... Also Avatar was 11 years ago. The last harry potter movie was 9 years ago. UA-cam released 15 years ago, it's old enough to drive a moped and have sex, in Sweden.
The DNR on this is very flawed. If you compare this to actual proper 4k film restorations like total recall you will notice this release will not hold up. A 10/10 is just unfair. It actually looks less sharp when compared to the bluray in some parts.
I just watched The Fellowship tonight. There's so many details that I never noticed before and the picture was so beautiful that it almost felt like watching the movies for the first time again.
Watching the LOTR in theaters was nothing short of magical. I can say without a doubt in my lifetime there will never be another movie experience like it.
Going to really enjoy watching that rider of Rohan fall out of his saddle and getting dragged by his horse as they charge across the pelennor fields in 4K.
Just letting you know, you and a couple other LotR UA-camrs has helped reignite my love of the franchise. Hoping in the after times to be able to afford EVERYTHING, books and movies. Thank you!
I have all 3 original Directors cut. I prefer the extended versions and as far as I'm concerned, one can never have enough Lord Of The Rings. 💍 I think I want the 4K version too.
would agree, i remember seeing the theatrical versions in theatre after watching the trailers which had extended scenes in them and then as i had already read the books i was like there shit missing in there ah. wheres the witch-king vs Gandalf scene which was in the trailers but wasn't included in the theatrical cut
@@kevinfelix2543 completely agree. Can you imagine The Return Of The King without Saruman dying the way he did? I know in the books, he died during the Scouring of the Shire, but Peter's adaptation was wonderful, nonetheless. Thanks for your post!👍
@@whitemoses7913 I was blown away when I heard a Christopher lee interview saying that his death scene was taken out entirely I was like “holy shit there’s more?!” Bought the extended versions the next day lol One thing I thought was so interesting is how much editing and cleaning up was done to create the finished theatrical product, as I’ve never seen any extended cuts or behind the scenes of any movie really. This biggest thing that stood out to me was how the music changed in some scenes. For me, as for most fans I’m sure, the score is really what made the experience. And in the extended versions you can tell they went in and made little tweaks to where the music lines up or maybe put in a certain phrase in a different spot, and surprisingly it really shows on the finished product. The best example for this is of course when the Orcs are sneaking up the river to take osgiliath. I’m the extended version, I believe we actually get a flashback of when Faromir actually finds boramirs horn in the river (hopefully this is the scene, it’s been about 2 months😅) as this scene led right into the attack on osgiliath, at this point, the music had already working towards a climax, ultimately leading right when faromir makes the first strike. But as we know in the theatrical version we don’t even have that flashback!! So this directly led to them being able to cut out the music entirely and totally changing the mood of the scene from an inevitable, head-on battle, to a stealthy “element of surprise” type attack. And this of course was a perfect way to depict that scene. Of course this is just my speculation and maybe they had other motives but I just thought that was really cool to think about. hats off to peter and his team for the best films ever made👌🏻
It was amazing to see the movies I love in their greatest form! What say you? Will you be picking up LOTR in 4K? What about The Hobbit trilogy? Affilate links: The Lord of the Rings Trilogy on 4K UHD: amzn.to/3lluDOa The Hobbit Trilogy on 4K UHD: amzn.to/37h9CiB I can also confirm that the included Digital Copies - both theatrical and extended - are also in 4K.
The effects also got a treatment. They weren’t entirely re-animated or anything like that. And there wasn’t any “George Lucas” treatment. I guess the best way I can think to say it is they fit with the live stuff equally as well as they did before. So if you compare live vs CG on Blu-ray, and live vs CG on 4K - those comparisons within their formats will be about the same, if that makes sense.
I just can't wait to see all the amazing details in Erebor. Really loved the design and architecture of it, but it's so dark inside the mountain you almost couldn't see anything else besides smaug and some pillars
That image of the old school VHS copy of LOTR.. That was me, i watched it on that and it blows my mind to now be sitting here in the year 2021 and be watching it in unreal 4k resolution. Perfect review as always

Nice to hear that they fixed up the sound mix. I’ve always found the Blu-ray edition to be kind of “mumbly”. I have a 4K TV, but no 4K player… guess I’ll have to get one!

Sold out everywhere in the UK too, crazy, managed to get one though. Hearing that on a technical level these are some of if not the best 4k remasters done, with completely regraded colour for hdr and a full dolby atmos sound rework. Cant wait to watch these badboys!
Actually disappointed with my set. There DNR and artificial sharpening all through the set. Actually this film is the most processed looking film since the The dark knight blu Ray. Detail is improved yes in close ups, but overall imagine looks like a TV broadcast of the film with the processed look of it.
Ya unfortunately for me, while the green tint is gone, the PQ isn't better imo. The HDR is bad too, barely noticeable. The Balrog scene should have been amazing, and it was not bright at all. Also the atmos mix is terrible for the center channel, while the reviewer didn't have this problem, I constantly had to adjust my volumes.
@@jackburton2946 that's what I was afraid of when I saw the video of Peter Jackson saying the primary reason he wanted to update them to 4k was that he wanted the Lord of the Rings movies to match the look of the Hobbit films. I dont like the look of the Hobbit films, too "TV processed" like you said
@@jorox34 I loved the HFR version of the Hobbit in the cinema. I'd love to see LOTR looking like that, unfortunately it can't be done. The Hobbit HFR vs standard is like a window to another reality vs just a movie for me. It was so visually stunning that it made up for the terrible content quite successfully.
1:48 bro when you started listed these really made me smile. Had VHS of the fellowship as a kid. Then we got the extended versions on DVD. That VHS tho was replayed about a million times! Great review!
As someone who's a massive fan of the incredible and often groundbreaking digital and practical effects in these movies, of the incredible locations and sets, the intricately detailed costumes and props, this is a must buy for me. I don't know how many times I watched the special features on the DVDs just because I was so enamored with everything that went into making these incredible films. Seeing the work that the incredible artists at WETA put into these movies in 4k is going to be a real treat.
I work in the film industry in Wellington, New Zealand and I thought I'd just mention that you were not correct when you said that Weta was involved in this restoration project. I don't believe they were involved. The two companies that it would make more sense to be behind it are Wingnut, Peter's production company, and Park Road Post, the local post production house that is wall-to-wall with cutting edge tech. EDIT: I just checked with a colleague. It was definitely Park Road Post that did the 4k UHD work.
Ah, thank you for pointing that out. I had read an article where they listed WETA as well, but I guess they must have been mistaken. Thanks for lending your expertise to keep me on the level!
@@NerdoftheRings FWIW, I'm used to youtubers getting way more things wrong than you did here. Don't even get me started about the misconceptions around the Avatar sequels. So, thanks for being comparatively well informed!
I don't understand those who prefer a theatrical version to an extended version. I mean there are so many great moments in the extended version that after watching it, watching a theatrical version feels like you miss so much, and it's true. The moment when Gandalf speaks the black language in the Elven house, it's such a powerful moment.
@@walkdeep I've watched a theatrical version a few times, but I still prefer an extended version. For me it's not even an extended version, it's a proper version. When I was watching a theatrical version, somehow it felt like something was missing. I wouldn't mind if an extended version was even longer. Go figure. That's how different we all are :-))).
The scene where Saruman dies, the scenes with Boromir in Two Towers, and The mouth of Sauron should have been in theatrical. Everything else drags and is super overindulgent imo. 4.5 hours is just ridiculous lol
They wiped out so many details that you wouldn't even believe. Things like erasing the top of Gandalf's staff, smoothing everything so it looks like the first Tomb Raider and oversharpening the edges until they develop a strong white edge around them. It's a scam really.
Can’t wait!!! I saw these when I was a child (VHS!!!). My brother brought home the fellowship and we had a family movie night. I’ll never forget that experience ❤️.
Could you, please, post a link to the source of the “restoration done in 4K”? Curious to know your thoughts on the DNR and EE. Could you, also, point to time stamps where you noticed more detail in this release?
This goes against the information I have read elsewhere. Elsewhere it's reported that this is *not* a new scan, but rather a remastered and upscaled version of the 2k prints (same as used for the old blu-ray). And the DNR used is pretty awful. And the box set doesn't include the appendices, for that matter.
I'm so glad they didn't do that stupid "cardboard book" packaging that many companies have been doing lately. Those risk scratching the discs every time you slide them out/in (which is why I take the discs out and store them separately in proper protective cases) so it's really nice that this has actual PROPER packaging that protects the discs and houses them well.
What a fantastic review! You brought the experience you had to life for the viewers of your review - something very difficult to do. But now... I still don’t know which to purchase given that I may not have time to watch the 4K version before the ultimate collection comes out. Either way - very well done.
I'm seeing the 4k versions in cinema for a 20th anniversary marathon this weekend!!! I was only a baby when the films came out, so this is my first time seeing it on the big screen. So excited!!!!

even tho i learn towards the original formats i dont really think this is a mindless gimmick like the bluray versions... jackson worked on these himself in the editing room
I’ve commented on your videos before, but want to say it again. Thanks for putting in the work on these videos, you and the content you create are awesome.
The comment about having to adjust the volume up/down on the Blu-ray edition is so true. We just watched Fellowship last night and its pretty frustrating! The comment about the green tint is something that I never placed before but is so accurate. Too bad I don't have a 4K television. Otherwise I'd probably be buying my 3rd version of a LoTR boxed set.
I watched reviews where people literally SHAT on this version the entire review so I was hesitant to spend the $80 but DAMN have I been missing out by waiting. This is BY FAR the best 4k version of any "older" movie I've seen in 4k. WOWIE WOW WOW!!!
Thanks for this. I reckon I'll suffer with my blu-ray another 6 months for the collector's edition, but now i know beyond a doubt that i will be making the upgrade.
Great review! Just picked up both sets at Target with a 20% off sale. ($72 each) sale ends on 1/30 Can't wait to watch with my new xbox series x on my 4k TV!
Me: "Shut up and take my..." Out of nowhere, a hand swipes the cash from my grasp. Warner Bros: "That's the whole point sucker." Whistling as they count the dough in their greedy hands. But seriously, I think I'll give it a buy one of these days.
I unfortunately don't own a 4k player so I bought the 20th anniversary blueray remasters which I heard are really good in terms of quality so I'm looking forward to watching them that way. Love the review for this and the hobbit trilogy by the way I enjoyed how in depth you go with what you say. Keep up the good work my friend
I was 12 when the first LOTR and first HP film game out in 2001 and I preferred HP due to them being kids in it and as an adult at 31 now I appreciate LOTR more than HP as it’s a more mature story than HP but I still like HP a lot but I d love to see more LOTR films , that new TV show could be a start as long as it’s not tuned by wokeness.
Was actually hoping for a video to go over the more advanced aspect of the restoration process. Definitely get surround sound even if it's just a simple setup system, these may be the best movies ever for it.
Didn't Peter Jackson say he had a whole bunch of extra scenes. One of the scenes was supposedly Treebeard and Legolas having a conversation. And on the DVD commentary he said that if there is ever a special edition to be released again that he would try to add those scenes back. It was something like another few hours of footage. I hope they do that.
It’s amazing looking. I dropped discs long ago and switched to iTunes and my AppleTV. I bought this in SD originally. iTunes then upgraded it to HD and now 4K for free. Another reason why I love iTunes for movie collecting. Apple isn’t going anywhere in my lifetime and they offer in place upgrades for your films. These films in this new 4K Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos presentation are stunning. I watched all three over the weekend. 11-hours of pure bliss.
Proud owner of the extended version figurine sets here. Haven't considered getting any new versions until now - gonna get the Ultimate this summer. And along with basically everyone here: hands down my favorite movies of all time. The last time I watched ROTK, I timed my self on how much I cried...it was 45 minutes.
Wow, I feel old. I was in the second grade when The Fellowship hit the big screen, and remember my buddies from my sixth grade class, and I all going to see the Return of the King. Hard to believe this is almost twenty years ago.
Good video BUT i would say that you stating that you were NOT going to get them and wait for the Collectors edition put this in a strange sort of position for me. You say you were going to wait but you love these....but you also got them sent to you for free. So getting stating you were going to wait, put a bit of a confusion to this review
Just helped to emphasise his excitement. He was going to wait, got these earlier than he expected and was oh so happy he didn't have to wait another six months.
Man it's been 20 years lol These movies are ageless. Can't wait for 4K hope they did real good job on them. Finally 4K for LOTR. I can't even say how many times I've watched these over 20 yrs. Extended Editions all the way.
If you want LOTR to look like the Hobbit, it’s for you. Because it’s not LOTR in 4K. There is a lot of bad Digital Noise Reduction. They removed the grain from the CGI ( back in the days they added it to make it looked like it belonged in the movie) and they changed the grading of the whole pictures. It looks like the Hobbit. And it’s not a compliment. The job was rushed for Xmas, wait for the summer release to see if they improved things after le backlash they received. Edit: I forgot to talk about the audio. It’s mostly good but some sounds are missing from some scenes. Such as the end of the fight between Saruman and Gandalf.
I have a 4K TV, and a Roku Ultra capable of 4K, but I have been reluctant to upgrade my Blu-ray player to UHD because of the cost compared to 1080p Blu-ray... But the right content could make me "take the plunge" as you put it. Thank you for informing your viewers about the "Middle Earth Ultimate Collectors' Edition". This will likely be the title that triggers my upcoming purchase (if I can wait until next summer).
My fiancé is a huge Tolkien fan, as am I (seen in my black cat, Arwen, soon to be joined by a white cat either Galadriel or Gandalf, depending 😅), so I’m super excited! We’re slow rolling the trilogy though, only for super important occasions. We watched Fellowship the day we became engaged. We’ll watch The Two Towers when we marry. And we’ll watch Return of the King when we start trying to have our kid. 😅 They’re really important films to us, having helped us through hard times in our lives, back in the dark days, before we had each other. We quote the books and films all the time, especially Eowyn’s “until use and old age accept them,” “if you want him, come and claim him,” “nobody tosses a dwarf,” “so say all who live to see such times,” and “I would rather spend one lifetime with you than walk though all the ages of this world alone.” He has an Evenstar medallion from me he wears EVERY. DAY. And his temporary band is a one ring from me (whether this means he is under my power or not is contested 🤪). Even early on he called me his Arkenstone, and we often see ourselves as either Aragorn and Arwen or Faramir and Eowyn (me being ill and so reduced in my circle of friends and isolated generally, longing for a life others insist is beyond my reach by virtue of the failings of my body). We’re planning on having a super small wedding so we can rent a castle in Ireland (his ancestral homeland), and the wedding will be LOTR influenced, complete with Tree of Gondor and Evenstar symbols for our respective guests, May it Be played by a harpist when I walk down the isle, him having a Mount Doom of Tater tots complete with a one ring causing an explosion of chili at his bachelor party, and perhaps me having a Nenya inspired ring. It seems the ring of Adamant is a good omen for a marriage. We’ve both had our share of loss and struggle in our lives, and both fight depression. These movies helped us process our pain, feel less alone, and be inspired to fight the battles we faced. It’s easier to fight the voice of depression when you recognize it for what it is, label it as a lie. Whether it’s his ‘mind goblins,’ or my ‘ring of power’s Persuasion,’ it’s incredibly helpful. These stories didn’t just define an era for us, our coming of age, it helped us SURVIVE it, until we found each other and grew stronger each alone even as we began fighting together. It’s so much easier when you have a Fellowship, or a Sam. I don’t think I’d see my goals realized without my Sam, and it would be a much grimmer experience. Allllll that being said, we are definitely getting these. They’ll be... man, they’ll be what we watch when one of us is sick, or when I need that sense of Fellowship when I’m pregnant and really friggin scared, or when we think our kid is finally old enough to really take it all in and appreciate it. I have the theatrical cut DVDs. And extended edition ones (God, those glorious extras, the miniatures and creature design, the sound design and color grading, the docs on Tolkien’s life, the writing process, the actor’s awesome interviews (“Do you have partridge? Bring the partridge!” “I would have made fish curry.”), the SCORE!!). I have the iTunes digital extended versions. But these, I mean, not getting them was never an option. 😂
Tevilo Master of Catssssss!!! The curse if Nims gold and the betrayal of the Nauglafring! Turin's curse! The love of Beren & Luthien! Ungweliant and her suckling of the great trees from Valinor! The Music of the Ainur! None of these will ever translate as well to screen as Peter's trilogy. The only movies that actually compliment the books instead of standing in their shadow. Kids are too dumb these days and it would be bad financially to rely too heavily on the audience's intelligence these days- especially with the Teacher's Union purposely ruining a generation of minds for political & personal reasons. #Sad
I got that box set on prime day. It is breathtakingly beautiful! I have a cheap 4k tv, and the difference is still night and day. And I’m sure I’ll be getting whatever comes out this summer as well lol.
I personally don’t feel like buying the 4K releases until *a)* I have a player and TV that are capable of displaying the HDR in its full glory, and *b)* they include the Appendices and all other special features on a future release or do a separate release of the those special features.
Exactly.. its just an upscaled version of the blu ray set and some color correction applied to fix the mistake from the blu ray set of fellowship… (should have been a recall)..hard pass until the studio releases a true definitive 4k version.. till then am happy to watch the blu ray set.. also no DNR on the blu ray set..
Can't wait to see Legolas and Gimli's rivalry, like *"Shall I describe it to you? Or would you like me to find you a box?"* in 4K xD Or cry when Aragorn says *_"My friend, you bow to no one"_*
Get a pair of surround speakers and 2 or 4 overhead atmost speakers. You can upgrade in phases if needed to get decent quality speakers. Once you have a full atmos system, you will be find the sound is much more enveloping with great use of surround and overhead effects.
Then you will have to stick with Bluray or DVD. Tho they should release that remastered footage in 1080p on Bluray too..just so issies like green tint are gone plus itbwould make it look crisp aswell
I have LotR extended trilogy on DVD (I even sent away for the special slipcover that holds all of the movies) and the blu-ray set. I really am looking forward to getting the whole set on 4K and it will likely drive my equipment purchases in the near future. Like getting a better TV, for one, and _maybe_ upgrading to an Atmos system from my present Dolby PLIIx 7.1 system. I'm a little curious why they would put out just the movies now instead of waiting to have all of the bonus material together with them, too. Well, we all know the answer is MONEY, but I'm just wondering what their release plan is. Is the full package going to cost _that_ much more that offering a set that has _just_ each trilogy will appeal to some people who otherwise wouldn't get the full bonus material edition? Maybe thinking that they can just watch their old sets with their bonus material. But, wait! They said that there will be "new and never seen before material" in the new collection! So, I don't know how I feel about the whole situation and, frankly, myself. :/ So, they put out the movies only edition to coincide with the holidays, of course. But, I'm going to wait to get the collector's edition when it comes out. Am I playing right into their money grubbing hands, here? And what happens after this? Will there be yet another "super duper deluxe combined WITH NEVER BEFORE SEEN MATERIAL" edition a few years from now? I don't know. I really like these films. (Well, mostly LotRs, but, to quote from another fantasy tale, that is another story...) But I just hate to feel like I'm being used as a money tree. :/ Anyway, so, yes, definitely upgrade to at least 5.1 surround sound. Yeah, soundbars are getting pretty good these days, but it's amazing what a subwoofer, center and surround channels can do. Especially when there's more than one or two people watching (and spread around a room), nothing beats discrete (separate) channels of sound.
Say it doesnt get much better, but i can assure that it will. Technology moves on, a fully VR based LOTR for VR with ultra-accurate depth maps and stuff will further improve experience. It wont be like watching a flat movie, it will be like standing right next to Aragorn, looking over the orc armies on helms deep. It will happen.

Just letting you know, you and a couple other LotR UA-camrs has helped reignite my love of the franchise. Hoping in the after times to be able to afford EVERYTHING, books and movies. Thank you!
Ive been feeling down lately but somehow your enthusiasm in this video made me happy. Thank you
Glad I could bring some fun to you day. Stay strong, my friend!
I've gotten this question quite a bit on Facebook & Twitter, so I checked it out - this set has subtitles in English, French, Spanish, and Dutch.
I have all 3 original Directors cut. I prefer the extended versions and as far as I'm concerned, one can never have enough Lord Of The Rings. 💍
I think I want the 4K version too.
They come with the extended editions
would agree, i remember seeing the theatrical versions in theatre after watching the trailers which had extended scenes in them and then as i had already read the books i was like there shit missing in there ah. wheres the witch-king vs Gandalf scene which was in the trailers but wasn't included in the theatrical cut
@@kevinfelix2543 completely agree. Can you imagine The Return Of The King without Saruman dying the way he did?
I know in the books, he died during the Scouring of the Shire, but Peter's adaptation was wonderful, nonetheless.
Thanks for your post!👍
@@joeybox0rox649 Yeah, I was like "Where'd Saruman go?" when seeing the originals. The extended edition provided answers to so many questions.
@@whitemoses7913 I was blown away when I heard a Christopher lee interview saying that his death scene was taken out entirely I was like “holy shit there’s more?!” Bought the extended versions the next day lol
One thing I thought was so interesting is how much editing and cleaning up was done to create the finished theatrical product, as I’ve never seen any extended cuts or behind the scenes of any movie really.
Affilate links:
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy on 4K UHD: amzn.to/3lluDOa
The Hobbit Trilogy on 4K UHD: amzn.to/37h9CiB
I can also confirm that the included Digital Copies - both theatrical and extended - are also in 4K.
It seems amazing but i would like to ask if they made any changes to the CGI effects?
The effects also got a treatment. They weren’t entirely re-animated or anything like that. And there wasn’t any “George Lucas” treatment. I guess the best way I can think to say it is they fit with the live stuff equally as well as they did before. So if you compare live vs CG on Blu-ray, and live vs CG on 4K - those comparisons within their formats will be about the same, if that makes sense.
I just can't wait to see all the amazing details in Erebor. Really loved the design and architecture of it, but it's so dark inside the mountain you almost couldn't see anything else besides smaug and some pillars
so did they fix legolas' eyes???
Just ordered the gift set for my little sister for Christmas ....
Okay it’s also for me
Some of the greatest movies ever.. I CANT WAIT TO OWN THESE
Amen to that! :)
That image of the old school VHS copy of LOTR.. That was me, i watched it on that and it blows my mind to now be sitting here in the year 2021 and be watching it in unreal 4k resolution. Perfect review as always

LOTR is ALREADY sold out. 🙄
They not selling in stores apparently no option for pickup, so probably low volume distribution issues.
I just got one from bestbuy.com when I saw Amazon was out. Like an hour ago (8pm mountain time, 11/30/2020)
i just got one now from target. order was accepted anyway, i have yet to pick it up though
Yep also went up from £75 to £120 also it isn't that quick because theres pre orders
Anyone in Australia hunting a copy? I just grabbed one from sanity.com.au online. A couple of stores have click and collect so check first to save postage
Nice to hear that they fixed up the sound mix. I’ve always found the Blu-ray edition to be kind of “mumbly”. I have a 4K TV, but no 4K player… guess I’ll have to get one!
Great review Matt, you've really hyped me up, I can't wait for my copy to arrive! :) Btw, is that the LOTR chess set in the bottom right?
Haha. Nope! It is actually the LOTR Little People set. Haha. I got it for my daughter but haven’t gotten them out yet. 😂

It's great to see the face behind the narrations.
Greetings from Australia.
Just watched them in 4K all I’m going to say is I’m just glad we’re in the right time where 4K is now becoming standard.
It’s pretty amazing! Glad to hear I was accurate in my assessment. 😁
@@NerdoftheRings Your review was awesome! Thank you! Ever since my friend introduced me to The lord of the rings when I was younger I love them!
Sadly it's not a 4k rescanning. Plenty of analysis explaining this, 2k upscaled with DNR
Never seen LOTR only saw hobbit and played the games. But jumping into this set to see for first time.
You‘re in for treat my friend:)
I want to see them for the first time again!
Hobbit is terrible compared to lord of the rings trilogy.
Oh my lord! buckle up my friend, it’s going to be epic
LOTR is sooooo much better than The Hobbit Trilogy.
I preordered mine a few weeks ago. Super excited.
I'll be waiting for the ultimate collector's edition to see what it comes with and the packaging. I feel like my Blu-rays will suffice until then.
need to watch the making off again. it blew my mind that balrog sound came from grinding stone.
Its because extended is too long, theatrical is more concise and each scene has importance. Extended is great from time to time though.
@@ProtestantsRUs i agree. Those are scenes that would work well with theatrical.
@@ProtestantsRUs Yet I love every minute of it :-))).
So glad I bought both of these, not gonna lie, Smaug's voice coming through on surround sound gave me shivers.
One thing that worried me from purchasing this is the egregious amount of DNR they used in this release
I love you mentioned the VHS cause I literally bought a TV with a built-in VHS player when Fellowship first came out on home video lol
Completely overlooking the HDR aspect. That's an even bigger deal than 4k.
It's really not though... Going from HD or 2k to 4k is more significant than HDR.
HDR and wide colour gamut are just gimmicks
@@ArnoldTohtFan well the gimmicks look great on my tv, maybe yours isn't setup right?
HDR is great - but for the rest of us using SDR monitors or TV we get washed out colour. Sucks.
@@oo0Spyder0oo we've been able to manipulate the colour palette of our films for decades. I don't see how HDR or wide colour gamut are any different.
What a fantastic review! You brought the experience you had to life for the viewers of your review - something very difficult to do. But now... I still don’t know which to purchase given that I may not have time to watch the 4K version before the ultimate collection comes out. Either way - very well done.
Omg I am sooo excited for this!! Thanks for the review Matt!! ❤️❤️❤️
I'm seeing the 4k versions in cinema for a 20th anniversary marathon this weekend!!! I was only a baby when the films came out, so this is my first time seeing it on the big screen. So excited!!!!
I wish it had the special features. I loved watching those when I was younger. May I ask for what accomplishment you got a Guinness World Record?
Haha! Good eye! I got it for throwing 2,633 baseball pitches in 8 hours. It was the main even of a fundraiser when my wife and I were saving up to adopt our daughter. 😊
@@NerdoftheRings that just sounds so long. 8 hours...but that is a great reason for a fundraiser, I have never heard of people fundraising for an adoption. Btw thank you for the videos, really enjoying them, might get me back into my own nerdiness of the rings.
Thanks for such an honest review Matt. Much appreciated. It was really nice of WB to send you the review editions. Bet you haven't stopped smiling yet! I won't be getting a 4K TV & player until after Christmas & haven't yet decided whether to get this edition or wait until summer 2021 (decisions, decisions ....).
It’s a tough decision for sure! Especially not knowing what the new bonus features will be. I don’t think I will stop smiling for a while - these films are going on repeat. 😁
even tho i learn towards the original formats
i dont really think this is a mindless gimmick like the bluray versions... jackson worked on these himself in the editing room
I’ve commented on your videos before, but want to say it again. Thanks for putting in the work on these videos, you and the content you create are awesome.
Thanks so much, my friend! I appreciate it!
Yeah, I'm so buying this.
Where can I buy the shirt he is wearing? I looked at his store and didn't see it
I watched reviews where people literally SHAT on this version the entire review so I was hesitant to spend the $80 but DAMN have I been missing out by waiting. This is BY FAR the best 4k version of any "older" movie I've seen in 4k. WOWIE WOW WOW!!!
Can't wait to get the releases next year!
Thanks for this. I reckon I'll suffer with my blu-ray another 6 months for the collector's edition, but now i know beyond a doubt that i will be making the upgrade.

Holy cow. Has it been 20 years already? I was really only 15 when this movie came out?
you are baby
Damn, I sure hope that’s the case!
That’s a great shirt, mate🤙🏽
Proud owner of the extended version figurine sets here. Haven't considered getting any new versions until now - gonna get the Ultimate this summer.
And along with basically everyone here: hands down my favorite movies of all time. The last time I watched ROTK, I timed my self on how much I cried...it was 45 minutes.
This damn 4k movie made me buy a 75" 4K tv, surround sound, and recliners...
Great to hear that PQ is so improved. You've gotto have the surround sound if you are reviewing movies, audio is half the experience.
I'm here to tell you that the audio absolutely smashes on a proper Atmos home theater setup.
Wow, I feel old. I was in the second grade when The Fellowship hit the big screen, and remember my buddies from my sixth grade class, and I all going to see the Return of the King. Hard to believe this is almost twenty years ago.
You mentioning you were in second grade when Fellowship came out just made me feel old. haha!
@@NerdoftheRings Haha I hear you. I appreciate your channel. I'm a diehard Tolkien junkie and enjoy the lore.
You made me want to find my old VHS copy of Fellowship! Can't wait to see what the collectors edition includes
That Fellowship VHS that I had 🤣
Me too lol
Just pre ordered it! I also just bought a 4K tv
That’s awesome! Enjoy! Let me know what you think of it when you watch it. I love hearing people’s thoughts on things like this!
@@NerdoftheRings will do!!
We quote the books and films all the time, especially Eowyn’s “until use and old age accept them,” “if you want him, come and claim him,” “nobody tosses a dwarf,” “so say all who live to see such times,” and “I would rather spend one lifetime with you than walk though all the ages of this world alone.”
He has an Evenstar medallion from me he wears EVERY.
So by the time The Silmarilion comes out, the quality will be Epic. I want to see Huan the faithful Hound🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲

The love of Beren & Luthien!
Ungweliant and her suckling of the great trees from Valinor!

#Sad
Silmarilion will be out on 2078g, so it is close my friend

I personally don’t feel like buying the 4K releases until *a)* I have a player and TV that are capable of displaying the HDR in its full glory, and *b)* they include the Appendices and all other special features on a future release or do a separate release of the those special features.
This is wrong, the film wasn't rescanned in 4k, they just upscaled it
Exactly.. its just an upscaled version of the blu ray set and some color correction applied to fix the mistake from the blu ray set of fellowship… (should have been a recall)..hard pass until the studio releases a true definitive 4k version.. till then am happy to watch the blu ray set.. also no DNR on the blu ray set..
Can't wait to see Legolas and Gimli's rivalry, like *"Shall I describe it to you? Or would you like me to find you a box?"* in 4K xD

Get a pair of surround speakers and 2 or 4 overhead atmost speakers. You can upgrade in phases if needed to get decent quality speakers. Once you have a full atmos system, you will be find the sound is much more enveloping with great use of surround and overhead effects.
I don't even own normal TV let alone 4k one. I watch everything on my 1080p PC monitor. :(
Then you will have to stick with Bluray or DVD. Tho they should release that remastered footage in 1080p on Bluray too..just so issies like green tint are gone plus itbwould make it look crisp aswell
You at least have that, I can only watch on the phone with max 720p.. well I can only dream for LOTR :(
I watched all of them last night. They're beautiful. Loved it with my surround sound, too.
So, they put out the movies only edition to coincide with the holidays, of course. :/
Anyway, so, yes, definitely upgrade to at least 5.1 surround sound. Yeah, soundbars are getting pretty good these days, but it's amazing what a subwoofer, center and surround channels can do. Especially when there's more than one or two people watching (and spread around a room), nothing beats discrete (separate) channels of sound.
I'm a huge LOTR fan but somehow this channel was only recommended to me last week. I've discovered an enchanted land of rabbit holes! Love your work!
Thank you my friend! So glad you found the channel! 😁
The Collector's Edition will feature the long-lost library scene.
Which scene is that?
Say it doesnt get much better, but i can assure that it will. Technology moves on, a fully VR based LOTR for VR with ultra-accurate depth maps and stuff will further improve experience. It wont be like watching a flat movie, it will be like standing right next to Aragorn, looking over the orc armies on helms deep. It will happen.
