    For a while I had a tough time spotting any differences beyond an upgrade in resolution.
    01:59 The transition here is where I finally noticed an easy to spot difference between the discs. The light shining off Marty's guitar pick is much more clear on the 4K.
    4:14 The wrinkles and imperfections on the actors' faces comes through on the 4K. Whether or not that's a good thing is up to the watcher.
    7:57 The glowing neon tubes on the Delorian Time Machine are more clear on the 4K.
    14:16 The bright exhaust from the thrusters on the Time Machine is washed-out on the Blu-ray while being crystal clear on the 4K. The higher color depth of HDR is a significant help when it comes to depicting things that shine on screen.
    I'm summary, the 4K is definitely better but not by a whole lot.
    That's not a knock against the 4K. I think it looks as good as it's possible to make it look.
    They just did a really good job with those old Blu-rays.
    _Back to the Future_ is one of my favorite films of all time. I'm glad to see quality work was put into these home releases.

    This doesn't seem like much of an upgrade I think that's because the Blu-ray was a 4K scan already. Course it does have more detail and I'm sure the HDR would inpprove image. If I didn't already upgrade to the Blu-ray set then I might be interested.

    Seems to me, better clarity on faces and sources of focus, and a cleaner contrast, but noise in the darkness has been removed and added... much crisper at times, flatter at others.

    A little boost in details in some scenes but in others is more notorious the boost in detail, that's nice, but personally color and shadows/contrast are the best changes.

    This is definitely not a night and day difference. I do like the sharper detail, but the one thing that I did notice was how face color tones look like they were dull down. Although when you look at Marty in the DeLorean after he just arrived in 1955 still wearing his hazmat suit, his face looks overly orange in the Blu-ray. They dialed down the skin tones to make it more natural, but I will say some of the Blu-ray scenes seemed better in my opinion. Some of the 4k scenes looked darker, although if I didn’t have a image to compare it too, I would not have noticed. I will still upgrade from my blu rays, Not to mention it will come with another set up blu rays for the people who just prefer it. It’s a win win.

    Sorry for having to be honest - but I don't know many movies where the highly advertised new 4K-version was so little better than an 10 year old Blu-Ray-version. Am I the only one who feels like that?

    • @Mymoonization
      @Mymoonization  3 роки тому +2

      Well then even if you consider that this is a minimal improvement and you think that the Dolby Atmos is not necessary according to you well indeed it's better to stay on its old Blu-ray !

      @paulcadman3562 3 роки тому +7

      The only way to see a 4k improvement is on a 4k projector unless you have a very large tv its not the leap in quality from blue Ray to 4k like it was from dvd to blue Ray that was a massive improvement

    • @wyup
      @wyup 3 роки тому +1

      @@paulcadman3562 The 2010 blu-ray version was never good from the start with its clear DNR, so just getting rid of it was necessary. The dvd looked really good when it came out, it is the same master as the 2010 blu-ray, but without artifacts.

    • @MaXXXXXXXXXXim
      @MaXXXXXXXXXXim 3 роки тому

      @@paulcadman3562 That not true at all.
      If you’re too far from you projector you won’t see the difference neither. It doesn’t matter if you watch it on a big screen projector or a 48 inches TV, what matters is the distance you sit from you it. That’s why when you buy a 4K TV you should choose its size with the distance you will sit from it.
      In my bedroom I have a 49 inches TV since I don’t have much space and I can clearly see the resolution difference, maybe even more since the dpi is higher. The clarity difference is even more obvious with video games, since I had a PS5 every game I played on 1080p with my base PS4 looks way better. Same for movies.
      And again not all 4K masters are equal, on some you won’t even see the difference with the standard Blu-ray no matter screen you have (depends on what camera has been used, if it’s upscaled or true 4K etc). But 4K is almost always the best way to watch a movie

      I find your comment a bit harsh and exaggerated. Frankly this is the best 4K version you can find at this moment.

    • @ScottBarrettihq
      @ScottBarrettihq 3 роки тому +2

      @@Mymoonization the comment is neither harsh nor exaggerated. The 4k can only reproduce the grain that is present on the film, not increase resolution as though it was shot in 4k. The 1080 30th anniversary does it very well and I think the threshold of information on the film print itself was very close to being reached. This is akin to increasing the KB/s compression to numbers higher than the original file had. There is just no way to go past what originally existed, you simply get a larger file size. As I commented separately, I'm going to pass on this release as the 30th edition looks great and I think has hit the 'definitive' space close enough for me, at least visually.

    The difference is hard to compare on a UA-cam video. Is this video in HDR? Is it raw data or captured via a camera? Even down to the screen you watched this on cannot demo what the eye would see in person... HDTVtest HDR analysis of this gives a good run through. It's a new 4k scan of the negatives so great detail. Colours and HDR are excellent yet without a high end HDR TV (and even better Dolby Vision) the differences will be less obvious to spot). Although my phone is HDR capable watching this vid it's no where near the Blu-ray quality watched on my OLED.

    Blu-ray is a failure of a format. The reasons why are "Price" and that idiotic 2:4:1 "Ultra Widescreen" format that is inferior to the "Open Matte" 16:9 versions we see on Comcast. The resolution of 4K is "higher" than 1080p. However, that also makes bad things more visible, too. Also, the "color" of HDR and Dolby Vision is definitely an "opinion" regarding which one is "better." Also, most 1080p HDTV sets have some sort of "Deep Color" mode that simulates the effects of HDR and Dolby Vision. These ultra minor differences are not worth the HUGE difference in "Price."
    The entire reason the 3D format failed with Blu-ray was also because of "Price." If the developers would have simply tossed an extra Blu-ray into the box for free with that high cost of $20 to $25 rather than forcing people to spend an absurd $40 for a 3D version, we would have seen the 3D format succeed. Greed is what made it so Blu-ray never achieved the level of success the DVD format did.
    DVD gave us a "Widescreen" version of the movie on one side, and a "Fullscreen" version of the movie on the other side. Or two different discs. Blu-ray never went that extra mile to satisfy customers.
    Same thing with sound. Blu-ray only uses 48hz for sound. DVD had many movies that used 96hz sound. For example, I initially owned Vertical Limit with 48hz sound on DVD. I then bought Vertical Limit with 96hz sound on DVD. And then I bought Vertical Limit on Blu-ray - which only has 48hz, but the sound is "Lossless." The version that sounds by far the best is the impressive DVD version with 96hz Lossy sound.

    • @michaelzoran
      @michaelzoran 3 роки тому +1

      @Moist Gnome I agree we have different opinions. But, as far as facts go, the 8-bit color settings provided in 1080p and younger 4K TV models provide 16.77 Million colors. The Deep Color modes in most of those HDTV sets improves those colors even more.
      Also, the sales of 4K TV sets were so poor because people clearly saw there were only very minor differences between 1080p and 4K TV sets. Yes, if you went to a view of a city where there were hundreds of cars driving around and each car was the size of a small number of pixels, there was less distortion in the 4K HDTV. But in every other type of scene, there was no noticeable difference.
      As a result, the manufacturers came up with the idea of "HDR" 10-bit color that increased the number of colors seen from 16.77 Million to over 1 Billion colors. And the 12-bit color from Dolby Vision provides over 68 Billion colors. This was the new marketing gimmick to try to get people to buy 4K TV sets.
      But, most companies choose to use 10-bit HDR rather than 12-bit Dolby Vision, because HDR can be used for free; however, when they use Dolby Vision it necessary to pay Dolby for the use of their technology. The difference is so minor between the two, most companies would rather save the money by using HDR. Plus, according to many reviews, the HDR looks better than Dolby Vision.
      The reason 10-bit HDR vs 12-bit Dolby Vision comparisons end up with HDR as the winner is the same reason why we often see the 8-bit technology with 16.77 Million colors end up as the winner - because "more" is not not necessarily, "better." I will explain.
      The companies marketed HDR as "10-bit is more than 8-bit. And 10-bit offers 1 Billion colors, which is more than the 16.77 Million offered by 8-bit."
      And the companies marketed Dolby Vision as "12-bit is more than 10-bit. And 12-bit offers 68 Billion colors, which is more than the 1 Billion offered by 10-bit."
      But, stop and consider that the difference between 8-bit and 10-bit was about 1 Billion colors. Now consider that the difference between 10-bit and 12-bit is about 67 Billion colors. That would mean the difference between HDR and Dolby Vision should be HUGE - far greater than the difference between 8-bit and 10-bit technologies. But, that is NOT the case at all. In fact, HDR often wins comparisons with Dolby Vision - just as 8-bit technology does.
      The reason why is because the 8-bit technology that uses only 16.77 Million colors uses the "best" 16.77 Million colors there are, while the other technologies use up to 68 Billion colors - including colors that are inferior.
      Think of yourself as a marketing director for the 8-bit technology. Now think of a marketing plan for 8-bit technology where your theme is telling consumers that other technologies allow movies to use up to 68 Billion colors, while 8-bit technology focuses on "filtering" out the "bad" colors in order to focus on using "Only the best 16.77 Million colors in order to make sure you get the 'best' picture quality at all times."
      That is the entire reason why the 10-bit technology often looks better than the 12-bit technology that offers 67 Billion more colors.
      And that is the reason why the 8-bit technology often looks better than 10-bit HDR and 12-bit Dolby Vision. 16.77 Million may be a "smaller" number, but it is as if you get to pic your "favorite" 16.77 Million colors. As a result, it often ends up looking "better" (albeit less accurate on paper) in the 8-bit version.
      In the end, it is all a matter of "opinion" regarding which one is "better." But, many people say the HDR and Dolby Vision versions are "flatter" and simply don't look as good. It is like giving a kid a box of crayons with 68 Billion different colors. In reality, the kid will say the box with 64 or 32 colors is "better" simply because the smaller box contains only the "favorites" that are used the most.

    BTTF is my favorite series and despite this coming out today, on my birthday, I think I'm going to pass. The 4k just doesn't have enough improvement to warrant the re-buy. 4 new extra features plus the exact same versions of the extras as my 30th anniversay... I have to give it a 'meh'. I'm currently working on a BTTF project (can't talk about) and so rewatched the trilogy last month. Can't see myself with another rewatch of the 4k versions any time soon. Looks like I'll wait until the 40th anniversary when it's been remastered in 3D and then the 45th as a hologram. I wonder how many other die hards feel the same as me and if those sales reflect the over saturation of versions. Will the studio think the interest in BTTF has finally dissipated, or will they expect a lower sales number due to the very similar version they released recently. who knows.
