4K release looks so BLAND and non-vibrant with colors. I mean, these aren't the most light hearted whimsical of fantasy movies, but they're certainly not documentaries of New Zealand that need realistic colors. Those original colors were fine.
You are watching this on a HDR monitor, aren't you? UA-cam should say "HDR" in the bottom corner instead of "HD"
Great way of putting it. The original colour filters helped set the scene. The new natural ones may be better for HDR I guess, but it pulls you out of the fantasy.

If you've seen this movie in a theater recently (which used the 4K remaster) you'd be saying otherwise. I've never seen the movie look as good as it did there. That being said, after doing some research, I will be getting the 2010 Blu-ray, since it's so nostalgic, but also doesn't have the green tint.

Those 2010 Blu-Ray versions must be like gold dust. As for the 2012 ones... good lord they screwed up

They COULD have simply up-scaled the crisp, detailed, filmic 2K master and NOT have applied DNR and sharpening and instead only make the color corrections to not have it be all geen, but no....
Can someone explain why no one EVER mentions the Blu ray extended version REMASTERED ??

I keep seeing ads to buy this exact version but somehow can't get a review anywhere. It seems to be a recent release and it is definitely not the 4K UHD version.
If someone out there has seen it, how does it compare to the classic blu-ray and the 4K UHD versions ?
Yes it does exist, it has the same changes of the 4k remaster, but wether it looks better than the 2012 blu ray is a matter of preference, i heard the audio balance was better on the remastered version, and contrast was better. I personally prefer the color correction of the remaster
Because the film grain cleaning is poor and has many artefacts and looks weird in movement of faces etc.
I know this comment is 6 months old. For what it's worth, I just received this version and will be returning it. For some reason, the DVD's actually sound significantly better on my surround sound than this version. Based on the screen grabs in this video, I'll either keep what I have or look for the 2010 Blu-Ray. The infamous green tint in the 2012 is pretty noticeable here, and I don't think I prefer the 4K color grades vs the older versions.
I think it's the 20th anniversary edition Blu ray. It has the enhanced Dolby Atmos track included similar to the 4k release
It's truly disappointing. The 4K is just recoloring over the 2012 green tint Blu-ray. It is not a new scan. It's not the same when you add another layer of red or blue tint to counter it.
Was there a blue Ray version in 2010 and 2012?

Why they can't just make the resolution of the original better, don't touch anything else, don't add any filters, don't change the colors, don't use fking upscalers and AI... Too expensive for such a masterpiece of cinema? As a result, the 4K version is just the 2011 version, with simply lowered green tint and inconsistency. Bring back the old colors!
It seems like the DVD still remains the best version thats been released on home video. The 2010 Blu Ray was clearly a 1080p upscale of the DVD, and the 2012 Blu Ray and 4K releases look awful
The 2012 one is from the extended version of The Fellowship of the Ring. All the extended version of FOTR Blu-ray have this disastrous green tint. Only the first movie. The other two extended Blu-ray sequels have a bit of color tinkering but not as obvious. What they did for the 4K was instead of rescanning a new transfer, they recolored it back to the 2010 look probably by adding a red tint and this is as close as it can get. It's not the same. The DVD's fortunately can still be viewed in it's original colors.
The 2010 Blu-ray is just a Blu-ray made from the old, 2K-ish video master. The DVD is just a lower res copy of said master and is in no way better then the 2010 Blu-ray. I've seen this movie countless times and I must say, when the 4K version was shown in theaters in 2023, it looked amazing. Looking at comparisons on a non-HDR screen can be useful but it will only get you so far when it comes to knowing what the movie actually looks like when shown in HDR and on the big screen.
That being said, I'm going to find the 2010 steelbook, for nostalgia reasons. :)

Why would any of the blu-ray be in SDR?
SDR stands for standard dynamic range. That's usually what all non UHD blu-rays come in.
you're confusing SDR/HDR with SD and HD. The former refers to dynamic range, the latter refers to resolution. All the Blu-rays are HD or above.
2002 DVD SDR was the best
I don't know about you but I find the 2002 DVD holding things down quite well......
How does the 4K at 3:00 look so bad compared to the others?
It looks a lot darker, and almost washed out. One of the reason I hate 4K UHD discs over Blu-rays is that they are so much darker. It drives me nuts.

I think you're confusing "bad" with accurate. The other three versions are over saturated.
It's likely because the youtube video isn't in HDR but the 4k disc is.

You remember that scene where Argorn is dead? In an old version it had a blueish tint.. in the new 4k version its to white.
1:52 Gandalf looks soooo dark on my hdr, almost no shadow under his hat. Just downloaded and this is the moment I understood I HATE HDR. Right now I downloaded both FullHD SDR and 4K HDR variant. SDR looks so much better. My monitor supports HDR10 but still it looks artificial. It's a shame I cant' watch LOTR in 4k with SDR
4k > 2010 blu ray > dvd > 2012 blu ray
Slow and repetitive, made it tough to follow the plot. Also the subtitles confuses me... maybe they were in spanish by mistake, lol. Loved the soundtrack, very suspenseful. 7/10.
