Imagine being able to avoid that song for all these years. That's the real talent 😅
Doesn’t happen. And Chad had definitely heard The Kill, his smile after hearing a few lyrics gave it away, he’d played along before.
professional touring musicians really dont have a lot of time to listen to a lot of music. they usually know what they like and explore that ie. what he said about jazz. T Pain has a series called "gun to your head" where he asks musicians to pick a song they know all the lyrics to and most of them have a hard time lol
this song was literally everywhere when it was in the charts. The is no way in the world he hasn't heard this song. @@sk33t_38

What a super sweet guy. I love how gentle so many metal guys are.
He had the sweetest smile when he was listening to the original 🥺
I own a barbershop, and one of our barbers was a touring hardcore band drummer. Our 5 year old used to climb him like playground equipment and he never minded. He did get said kid a drum set for Christmas one year. Not sure we ever forgave him for that, but he was a big teddy bear we adore to this day. He would never be in the shop alone though, was convinced the 150 year old building was haunted

Metal is very cathartic. If I'm having a bad day, playing something heavy and brutal on guitar actually helps. Screams are helpful as well.@@ariellagrange1779

I find it funny that Megadeth’s drummer actually slowed the part down. Brilliant playing.

First 2 verses was slow..then it's blend well
It's slower but it's heavier
Hahaha yeah this is a good point… I’d say he made it more melodic and heartfelt
This whole concept of a musician playing a song blind and creating their own version is PERFECT!!!!!!!! It completely shows the beauty of interpretation with music.
Check 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 "em uma música" by Lucas Inutilismo. He basically covers in his own rock version some songs. it's really amazing, and he does ALL the instruments by himself as well

His version really made this song sound like ballad which was fucking dope.
Such a humble, ego-free and super cheerful dude, while also being tremendously talented. What a great human.
Also awesome how a musician can appreciate the talent of another even though their genres are totally different.
Those are great traits all mixed up together, probably an awesome dude to learn from

@@bsquadrider "Game recognize game" :)
The most talented people are also the most humble, thats they key... They aint good on what they do because they want to be the best but because they enjoy so much doing it that eventually they become the best...
This is the best example of how a song can be changed so dramatically by the drums.
True, I had a band and there was this time the singer said that the drums were not a important for the mood of a song
Y'all never seen That thing you do?
Yes sir. Absolutely
It's more anthemic, it turns it into almost a My Chemical Romance song
lol drums are arguably the most important part for the mood.
His version has such a big dramatic feel building up through the verses. The vibe is very different but still fits well, and with the exception of the very end of the outro, he really nailed the rest of it. The shifting tension between sections gives the chorus a lot more punch while giving the verses room to build up gradually. He killed it in one take!
Crazy, I prefer this version, there is just something about it that feels like my childhood. I don't know how else to put it. It feels good.
Absolutely, well said
it just matches the meaning of the song
It feels more romantic through the verses compared to the original. I love it!
It has a nice forward push to it--I feel like the original started with a forward momentum but ended with a kind of dragged-back feel (which just lent it a different overall feel than his version).
Drumming in half time really makes it even more of an emo track, and made the contrast when he sped up for the chorus feel even better.
Very much agree, it's more sludgy, more emo.
word exactly. I don't even particularly like that song, it just feels melodramatic to me.
But then THIS version somehow hits the emotional "oomf" that I think the song is meant to a little harder. I found myself singing along to the lyrics.
Transformed the song from an earworm that I'm sick of hearing to an absolute banger. It's like his style of drumming helped me see why so many people love that track.
It would be rad for them to do this with every instrument independently and then put all the new parts together and see how insanely different it is from the original
I'd really like to hear that....great idea:)
It's not as easy as drumming lol you can add a drum track to your car's blinker noise haha
@@thingonathinginathing yep and then you can add chords over that, people harmonize with things like air raid sirens in ukraine, look it up super cool!
Your onto something there
@@thingonathinginathingYeah, but it might be possible if the guitarrist goes right after the drummer with just the new drums and og bass, then goes the bass player with just the new guitar and new drums, and finally the vocals with the og lyrics and the new musical arrangement. Besides all that's already been said, his genuine laugh followed by the line "Hey, man, don't hate me... I did my best" showed how humble, respectful and great of an artist he is.

Came for drumeo but left a fan of this guy his personality is awesome
I love how his version makes it sound like it’s mellowed down a little but seems to hit harder at the same time.
The double kicks at the end. 😂
yeah, he really sounded to slow it down!
he's playing single-hand 16th note ride pattern vs killers drummer plays two-hand 32nd note hihat pattern.. that's what gives the different feel in pace
That's the power percussion has over music. You could leave every other part alone and simply take the drum part to half time and it sounds like a completely different song. They have the power of contrast which is one of the most underused concepts in music imo.
Yeah, he was playing at halftime in those moments. Still sounded great. He didn't realize you were supposed to be flying through this song playing 16th notes on the hi-hat the entire time.😂 He cut that in half, made it sound a little more slower.
His version feels like an old school rock track. It’s awesome how changing one instrument change the song so much.
Really gives it new life. I’d actually like to hear this version recorded.
There actually is a half time beat version of this song by Alex Melton that feels very similar to this version right here. I reomend you to listen to it.
I totally like his Version
That’s why I love playing with new people. It’s like speaking your soul through the instrument

His version of this song has such a Foo Fighters vibe. Well done!
somewhere between the killers and Megadeath is like half of the foo fighters song book 😂
Yes it is!!!
I'm happy I found this comment and that I'm not alone in my analysis
Ehhh I did not hear one flam in the entire song. (Correct me if I'm wrong 😅) Can't be foo fighters without at least 3 or 4 flams but man he really did a "killer" job. The outro with the double bass was sic!
You say that and now I can't unhear it.
This was incredible. How he interpreted the drumming completely changed the pace and vibe of the song. Really cool.
it felt like it became better than the original
I literally yelled 'the space!' during the part leading up to the first chorus haha, loved how much room the slower drums gave the song
yes i think so, but his timing was off several times in fill parts.
@@JPK1337In the beginning, a few times, but once he found his groove, I think he nailed it.

1:18 the Cam op just turning in disbelief is comedic editing gold. I almost spit my drink
His version is so slick. It’s like a peek into an alternate timeline where bands had found different artists. So cool!
It's just fascinating how much of a change in dynamic it gives the song just with one instrument going a different direction. Quite like the vibe he gave it with that alternative approach.
Damn i enjoy this content. Discovered this because of chad from RHCP
@@marzipanmonkey yeah the half time really throws it off for me. I wouldn't mind hearing a remix like this.
@@marzipanmonkeyRight? I didn't realize how much the drums were setting the pace for the track.

It's wild because he kind of pulls the lighter energy out of the song and makes it feel a little more somber without pulling any of the spirit out of it. It's fucking beautiful
Holy shit, that is actually a perfect explanation. I was having a hard time wondering why I liked it and you just literally explained it haha. Thanks for that!
Turned it into a Blink 182 vibe
Metal tends to also focus more on the heavy thumpy bass drum; for me that's what changed most in terms of signature. Still very classy and tastefully done by Dirk. I love the offbeat moments he put in in the bridge and crossover sections.

Metal dudes are always some of the nicest guys I've ever met.
This is incredible, he brought Mr. Brightside down to a level where it felt way more emotional than poppy. I love it.
Exactly. He took this poppy bright sound, which wasn't bad, and took it to an emotional part by quietening it down and allowing the verses to be heard.
It's amazing the difference a drummer can make. Ronnie makes it sound dance-y and pop but Dirk makes it sound emotional. I love both versions
@@Fackunator I love that drummers can drive not only timing but the 'energy' of a song. It's incredibly powerful. I love being a drummer.
@qdawg8087 this is why Ringo needs more credit than he gets for his drum parts with the beatles

The way he is playing during the prechorus makes the song much slower in pace and I'm here for it. Such a cool rendition.
It's different in a really interesting way.
That's what I really liked about this. Dirk slows it down and I'll be honest the song sounds better at a slower pace. The original seems sort of "frantic" in comparison now.
Much more melodic and that's better, actually.

Idea: I know this is a drumming page, but it would be cool to now, with this version of the song made, extract the guitar from the song, give it to a guitarist to fill in his own tune, and then do the same with a bassist and then vocalist/songwriter (or whichever order is best). Kind of like the game of telephone but with music. Then you'll get to see one song completely transform into a new song.
Underrated comment right here
Great idea! I would love to see this in practice!
Amazing idea. I would love to hear it.
Yes
I honestly wouldn't change the lyrics, as they are pretty much the key component of this song, changing them would mean you have a pretty much new song, while only making changes to the instruments and singing will give you a new interpretation of the song, which is pretty much the goal of this video. Also, I'd say it's much easier to adjust your own instrument to the ones already playing, making up a whole new text on the spot seems reaaallly hard.
I of course don't wanna downplay Dirks perfomance in this video or anyone doing something similiar, just listening once to the song and going along this well with it is very impressive, but coming up with a fitting text on the spot seems so much more impossible to me, atleast if you wanna do it on a decent level. You gotta tell a story with it, every syllable has to fit and the energy has to fit aswell. (what I mean with that is, that Mr Brightside is kind off a feel good song, it's about a guy staying positive. Now imagine the text would instead be something melancholic or maybe hateful)
This is by far my favorite blind listen (but also one of my all time favorite songs). These blind play through segments are definitely my favorite thing you guys do on this channel.

The wider opening changed the whole feeling of the song. Instead of the anxiety of the fast cymbal hits in the beginning that keep the song desperate throughout, it was a slower feeling of uncertainty that built into the crisis the lyrics depict.
It's crazy how much he showed that percussion is the heart of a song. It's the same song but a completely different experience. So cool

The way Dirk chose to let it breathe at times changed the form of the song completely. It just goes to show how important the drums are to set the frame of the song's basement and how it can change how the landscape looks so much.

I love how at the end he's concerned that he messed up the ending. While all of us are completely dumbfounded he is able to do this so well.
Exactly lol
Exactly.
I gotta say, this whole video series is fascinating. I love hearing these drummers leave their comfort zones and show their incredible musicianship
I thought the very same and really hope they continue making these.
It's incredible, I can't get enough! I just love how much the drums can affect the feel of a song!
That's what I'm here for, not even a drummer myself
I don't think he left his comfort zone for a second here :D
That’s what it’s all about
get outside the box and you will learn.. love this guy.
Seems like a really cool guy to be around. It was beautiful seeing him hearing such a classic for the first time! Amazing moment caught on camera, should've been put in the golden record.
I gotta admit that I'm stuck in this channel for hours. Great job and content concept.
Honestly drumeo please do this more often give drummers hit songs from any genre that they haven't heard before because watching them play these with their own interpretation is just really cool great video guys
They need to give him stems. No drums on it.

He didn’t have the drums in his ears.
I know he’s not an original member of Megadeth, but I have a newfound respect for this man. What a talent.
Edit: I’m aware that Dave Mustaine is the only original member left. What my comment was meant to convey was, Megadeth has gone through so many new band mates over the years that I stopped caring, but when I heard Dirk, I put aside the bias that he is a new member and found a new respect for him.
His work when he was in soilwork is legendary
@@iancraig5415 Oh shit, didn’t know he was in Soilwork. It’s been awhile, but Natural Born Chaos was one of my favorite albums.
Such a nice, considered and generous musician. Outstanding video and demonstration of craftsmanship.
@@1Deep43VAPlease check out the "stabbing the drama" album from soilwork. Awesome album and great drum work. Killer drummer.
He also did the drums for Devin Townsend's Deconstruction album! Devin has had some excellent drummers but I think his playing there was my favorite overall.
He also invented his own type of blastbeat that's pretty famous and you can hear it all over Soilwork even after he left (Dirk blast: high tempo 8th triplets with open hats on the quarter notes, made easier to sustain by alternating hands between the snare and the hats)
The depth this song acquired with these drums is unreal... Incredible what other view can bring to the table
Great concept, fantastic drumming, as expected from a Megadeth legend. Loving the reaction to Ronnie's set. absolutely awesome xxx
I think it so fascinating how the drummers can remember each moment of their version and be like ‘oh I did this here’ or ‘we did this at same time’
Kind of reminds me of when high level chess players are able to remember all their and their opponent's moves after a match.
its a ll purposeful, it might not mean much to you
Friend once explained it to me like this:
"A song is broken up into different parts. Think of each part as a word. Together the whole song is a short sentence.
"In my head, I have a vocabulary of different drum parts. Think of each mix of parts like a 4 digit alphanumeric code. All I have to remember is one sentence and the code for each word in that sentence. If you practiced that, you could probably get it down in a week, yeah? Takes a bit longer to get it down as a drummer, but it's very doable."
It's a pro-habits. We recognized patterns. Like i would know where my opponents-attorneys was going just by reading their appeal, lawsuit etc.
That is the longest Mr. Brightside has sounded in ages. Having a completely new drum part makes it like hearing it for the first time. Gotta savor each moment.
I know absolutely nothing about drums, just randomly popped up on recommendation- so impressed with this. Glad I watched.
This was such a treat! Glad I stumbled upon this video ❤
This video is proof of just how talented this guy is. What an artist.
You're lying to yourself
Really, why is he lying to himself?
@@rokmihelcic868 I'm pretty sure that if you asked Dirk Verbeuren if this was a good display of his talent, he would say no. Mr. Brightside is an easy song and all he did was play half-time at the beginning of it. There's probably much better proof of how talented this guy is elsewhere
@@mothamaster3000you don’t have to play fast to be talented, it’s all about the artistry which he nailed.
Its amazing how the "epic" parts were so close to originals drums. And rest was his own masterful interpretation.
There's just times when a certain section calls for a particular beat, regardless of the drummer behind the kit.
@@Ricekrispy10 oh really? That's interesting. I have absolutely zero knowledge about drumming in respect to rest of yall. It's cool to kno particular sections demand a certain arrangement from drummer, regardless of who is at kit. Thanks for feedback
@@MoDeegroes Are you an AI? This was the most ChatGPT response I've ever seen
@stewartg7606 No problem. When you've played for long enough and learned enough songs, you'll find some beats can never be escaped lol.
@@ahall9839 u mean my original comment? 🤣 or the first reply to ricekrispy?
Perhaps my inability to determine which. Comment you're referring to is answer enough. Im clearly the first hybrid ChatGPT / YT Commenter Bot.
Dude what a legend making a point of showing his note-taking system right off the bat like that! so valuable!
one of the coolest things about this video series is getting to hear these musicians talk and realize they're all just super nice humble people
I like that he was sensitive to the song and didn't try to overplay it. Great job!
I thought he completely overplayed it, especially on the crash cymbals.
@@mierypesado6740 I believe they meant that he didn't do the typical "Metal Drummer Plays Non-Metal Song" thing of just playing double-time and blast beats.
@@FortyHurts for sure you're right, but no need to defend such an insane statement lol. I guess you could call it tastefully overplayed
@friedsensei The statement was he "didn't try to overplay it." So you think that he DID try to overplay it? Words have meaning.
A. He did amazing.
B. He did over play it a little, but he was playing it blind, and his version went pretty well with the song.
C. He acknowledges at the end that he over played it and that the original was more subtle and tasteful.
D. This argument comes off as kids trying to sound like they know what they're talking about.
I mean this in the best way possible - who knew that Megadeth + The Killers would result in something that sounds a bit like My Chemical Romance? Flippin amazing. Mad credit to the recording + mix engineers, I got chills from that kick.
The same happened to me with the kick! jajajaja
Yeah man I absolutely loved this! If this is what it usually sounded / felt like they’d have an extra fan 😂
Woah that's not a bad comparison
Check out World War Me's self titled album, it's pop punk with metal sensibilities and it really does sound like a MCR revival band!
One take Dirk 🔥🔥
AWESOME format!!! More of this please.
Love this. 👍🏻🥳 Would have liked to hear more of the drum less track while he was first thinking about it.
I love the way he plays the verse in half time from the original. It changes the whole feel of the song.
FR. The verses feel sadder and the chorus more kinetic and positive
I've suspected for a few years now that I have beat deafness. I was surprised by this comment because I thought on first listen that he pretty much figured out the exact drum pattern as used in the original. I've gone back and forth half a dozen times now and I can discern timbral differences in the toms, but otherwise I cannot tell the difference at all. Really interesting.
@@cyborgninjamonkey oh shit, you are definitely missing some very big differences. the main one being how often the snare hits. the op mentioned half time, which basically means the snare hits half as many times per bar. the rest of this channel would be a great place to start if you want to enhance your capacity to digest the rhythms in the music you enjoy.
@@21centdregs they don't really show the part where he reacts to the original version of the song during the verse. but the chorus is more or less the same in the levels of energy
@@bluerum896 Yeah. Woulda been cool to see his reaction to the verse.
He killed that. I love how he changed the feel for the song.
You can see he started grooving halfway through. Outstanding!!
no pun intended?
So he killed The Killers.
