yeah man, I think this guy can go faster, more aggresive, more complex drum beat, more showing off skill but he just play safe not to messess up his already stable career, look how gentle he is
To me, the mark of a great drummer is LESS. Most of us can play super fast fills and be fancy the entire song. The secret sauce (Goldilocks drumming is nice) is putting just enough WOW into it without being obnoxious and all "Don't forget about me!!"
As someone who’s loved playing the drums recreationally since I was 15yo and listening/playing to these alternative rock classics, watching Dirk cover this song the way he did sent goosebumps all over my body
It's wild because he kind of pulls the lighter energy out of the song and makes it feel a little more somber without pulling any of the spirit out of it. It's fucking beautiful
Holy shit, that is actually a perfect explanation. I was having a hard time wondering why I liked it and you just literally explained it haha. Thanks for that!
Metal tends to also focus more on the heavy thumpy bass drum; for me that's what changed most in terms of signature. Still very classy and tastefully done by Dirk. I love the offbeat moments he put in in the bridge and crossover sections.
I loved that he did it in halftime during the verses. He calmed down the verses and energized the bridges and choruses with his fills. This was awesome
he's playing single-hand 16th note ride pattern vs killers drummer plays two-hand 32nd note hihat pattern.. that's what gives the different feel in pace
That's the power percussion has over music. You could leave every other part alone and simply take the drum part to half time and it sounds like a completely different song. They have the power of contrast which is one of the most underused concepts in music imo.
Yeah, he was playing at halftime in those moments. Still sounded great. He didn't realize you were supposed to be flying through this song playing 16th notes on the hi-hat the entire time.😂 He cut that in half, made it sound a little more slower.
Woooord. This is one of those songs I'm really sick of hearing (even though I think it is inarguably a pretty good song) - and I got shivers listening to his version. Right off the bat he's doing something interesting and driving the song in this new way.... What a treat. \m/ nice work Megadeth man

@@jimgray3346we don't for sure, but I believe it. That skill is pretty important for professional drummers that are hired on a per-gig basis. I bet he's the kind of guy that you could call the day of the show with a set list and he'd nail it.

professional touring musicians really dont have a lot of time to listen to a lot of music. they usually know what they like and explore that ie. what he said about jazz. Ehhh I did not hear one flam in the entire song. (Correct me if I'm wrong 😅) Can't be foo fighters without at least 3 or 4 flams but man he really did a "killer" job. The outro with the double bass was sic!
That's what I really liked about this. Dirk slows it down and I'll be honest the song sounds better at a slower pace. The original seems sort of "frantic" in comparison now.
This is so good! I love musicians like him, that love music for what it is - emotion and expression. His eyes lit up just listening to the drum-less track... it didn't matter what the genre was, he just appreciates making art
It's just fascinating how much of a change in dynamic it gives the song just with one instrument going a different direction. Quite like the vibe he gave it with that alternative approach.
What an exceptionally pleasant human being. He seems like someone who you could talk to for hours, and someone who you could leave you grandmother with. His parents must be proud.
His drums completely changed the mood of the song to a more melancholy feel and it’s actually incredible. Love the original drums and the way Dirk interprets them here. Truly an example of a musician that knows their craft and has studied for years. Fantastic performance
It makes you wonder if, conversely, the Killers actually sped up their original drum performance, to make the song intentionally more poppy and upbeat. I've always found the lyrics quite melancholy.
That is the longest Mr. Brightside has sounded in ages. Having a completely new drum part makes it like hearing it for the first time. Gotta savor each moment.
SOoo good - Dirk is a phenomenon. New favorite drummer. Just a lyrical new take on the whole song. Love the “slow burn” intro and the double bass towards the end!
I wonder this a lot. Like, part of me could see a musician knowing more than me or any other big music fan, but then I also think about it like you talk about it, that they just don't have the time. I imagine their catalog is HUGE leading up to their making it.
@@TexRobNC Right! Also, the older we get the more critical we are about what we listen to and nothing beats old school anything in any genre. So I could understand him not knowing the song. I'm fascinated by just how happy and cheerful Dirk is. He's just enjoying everything and everyone in the room. That in itself made the video more fun to watch.
he seems like such a sweetheart. a smile was plastered across my face during this whole video, partly because this song is a classic and partly because Dirk seems genuinely cool as hell. The entire concept behind this video is excellent
@@mierypesado6740 I believe they meant that he didn't do the typical "Metal Drummer Plays Non-Metal Song" thing of just playing double-time and blast beats.
A. He did amazing. B. He did over play it a little, but he was playing it blind, and his version went pretty well with the song. C. He acknowledges at the end that he over played it and that the original was more subtle and tasteful. D. This argument comes off as kids trying to sound like they know what they're talking about.
Idea: I know this is a drumming page, but it would be cool to now, with this version of the song made, extract the guitar from the song, give it to a guitarist to fill in his own tune, and then do the same with a bassist and then vocalist/songwriter (or whichever order is best). Kind of like the game of telephone but with music. Then you'll get to see one song completely transform into a new song.
I honestly wouldn't change the lyrics, as they are pretty much the key component of this song, changing them would mean you have a pretty much new song, while only making changes to the instruments and singing will give you a new interpretation of the song, which is pretty much the goal of this video. Also, I'd say it's much easier to adjust your own instrument to the ones already playing, making up a whole new text on the spot seems reaaallly hard. I of course don't wanna downplay Dirks perfomance in this video or anyone doing something similiar, just listening once to the song and going along this well with it is very impressive, but coming up with a fitting text on the spot seems so much more impossible to me, atleast if you wanna do it on a decent level. You gotta tell a story with it, every syllable has to fit and the energy has to fit aswell. (what I mean with that is, that Mr Brightside is kind off a feel good song, it's about a guy staying positive. Now imagine the text would instead be something melancholic or maybe hateful)
Boy, the sound coming from those drums is spectacular. Props to the sound engineer and to everyone behind the studio production desk, because everything is not only crystal clear, there's also this crisp, warm tonality to it, just very pleasurable to listen to. It fits in the mix very naturally. As someone who is also not familiar with this song, I wouldn't have been able to tell it was a drum remix if I had just listened to the song separate from the video

I know jazz drummers historically are often the most revered, but metal drummers have such a special ability to create emotion through rhythm that I find mind blowing!!!
There are bunch of jazz drummers in hip hop, funk, metal even electronic. So dont be surprised when Dave Lombardo said bossa nova inspired Slayer, Dave itself created world music and avant-garde jazz album,AAL and Meshuggah plays jazzy metal😂
Jazz drummers ehhhh they play swing so that's tricky but those guys have small sets. Metal drummers have more toms than a jazz drummers whole kit, 10 different style and size crashes for tone, splashes galore, double kick...not to mention so many tempo changes throughout a 5 minute track. Dude there is no comparison the skill it take to play metal is far more intricate than ANY genre.
Megadeth is a jazz band with the distortion haha in the early 80’s chris poland former guitar and gar samuelson former drummer was in the band they were jazz musicians. Megadeth are one of the most skilled thrash metal bands u’d ever find. They are the jazz of metal tbf
I know he’s not an original member of Megadeth, but I have a newfound respect for this man. What a talent. Edit: I’m aware that Dave Mustaine is the only original member left. What my comment was meant to convey was, Megadeth has gone through so many new band mates over the years that I stopped caring, but when I heard Dirk, I put aside the bias that he is a new member and found a new respect for him.
He also did the drums for Devin Townsend's Deconstruction album! Devin has had some excellent drummers but I think his playing there was my favorite overall. He also invented his own type of blastbeat that's pretty famous and you can hear it all over Soilwork even after he left (Dirk blast: high tempo 8th triplets with open hats on the quarter notes, made easier to sustain by alternating hands between the snare and the hats)
I once in a small lonely bar in Mexico met this very old pianist, he was playing very very old songs, and i asked him if he knew a particular song, by a very popular spanish musician since the 80s and one of his most popular songs, the Oldman, (maybe 75+?) had no clue, who he was much less the song, so he asked me: "how its goes? just hum it" I had this blackout and barely could give him more than 5 seconds of awful humming.... Like seriously horrendus, i really dont give him anything, and he started to play the fucking song! it blew my mind like to this day i cant believe it. Watching these videos is very impressive but what I witnessed with that Pianist was something way out of this world.

People don't realize that a drummer can practically change the genre of a song just by playing a different beat. A drummer can really make or break a band.
Dirk Verbeuren is such a fantastic drummer. He really delivered on this track. He didn't over complicate his part or detract from the song at all. I would love to hear his version after a few takes. Mind blowing!
This reminds me of the difference in John Peteucci's Cloud 10 with Mike Mangini vs Happy Song with Mike Portnoy. Crazy how clean fills at the right time in the song change the entire track.
@@caprise-music6722 the "happy song" Portnoy version is much better of a fit to the song and he had the same basic introduction to recording that album as this video. A drummer that knows what the song needs with a big kit and a knowledge of how to use it can completely change a track. That's why Peteucci did the album with Mike P not M
The wider opening changed the whole feeling of the song. Instead of the anxiety of the fast cymbal hits in the beginning that keep the song desperate throughout, it was a slower feeling of uncertainty that built into the crisis the lyrics depict. It's crazy how much he showed that percussion is the heart of a song. It's the same song but a completely different experience. So cool
This guy just goes to show you who the people playing metal really are ... Smart, extremely talented and in this case someone who seems kind and very likeable. This was a treat to watch!
Metal has its wall of sound that deters a lot of people. Luckily their talent is acknowledged, way more so than decades ago I feel. I honestly think talented metal musicians are up there with say the jazz or rock virtuosos.
Yeah I mean, I really hate the idea of being arrogant with music or genres etc, I think there's so so many talented musicians in all genres. With that being said, I absolutely adore being in metal, so many of the bands and players I look up to are just out of this world with the amount of compressed talent fit within the genre
This is a master at work. The way he starts so slow and builds the dynamics up as he goes until the final chorus shows me how much he was thinking about not only the composition but the "feel". He turned an already great song into a dramatic masterpiece, and very quickly at that. If he were to spend more time with it I'm sure he'd have matched and perhaps exceeded the quality of the original. So cool to watch his process.
Yeah, and if he had a kit to match the overall sound of the song. The cymbals aren't bright enough, and his drums need a bit more resonance. Other than that, his playing is evidence of a true master
As someone who’s not a musician, this is so fascinating to see how just changing one aspect can make that much of a difference in the feel of the song.
fr, ronnie's drums really drive the song and give it energy, dirk's version gives it a very garage grunge rock feel. feel like completely different songs with the different takes on drums
Crazy, I read this before Dirk started drumming and I was thinking "how much could it possibly change the feel of the song" and the second he started I'm like "oh that much!"
word exactly. I don't even particularly like that song, it just feels melodramatic to me. But then THIS version somehow hits the emotional "oomf" that I think the song is meant to a little harder. I found myself singing along to the lyrics. Transformed the song from an earworm that I'm sick of hearing to an absolute banger. It's like his style of drumming helped me see why so many people love that track.

Dude is a professional drummer. He smoked it on the first take. It was so good because he was not going too extra. It was just the right amount of talent he decided to put on it. Goldilox drumming. And his interpretation brought out all the feels. I could feel the heart break.

To me good drummers are like Wizards. I cant even beat a wooden spoon on a pot.
To me, the mark of a great drummer is LESS. Most of us can play super fast fills and be fancy the entire song. The secret sauce (Goldilocks drumming is nice) is putting just enough WOW into it without being obnoxious and all "Don't forget about me!!"

Fuckin for real. Nailed the whole arrangement and knew exactly what he wanted to do after one listen then played it to machine-like perfection haha
As someone who’s loved playing the drums recreationally since I was 15yo and listening/playing to these alternative rock classics, watching Dirk cover this song the way he did sent goosebumps all over my body

That's the first thing I thought, like his version made sense with the lyrics.
It made it a mournful lament of lost love rather than a defiant anthem. Which I think might fit the lyrics just as well

he's playing single-hand 16th note ride pattern vs killers drummer plays two-hand 32nd note hihat pattern.. that's what gives the different feel in pace

Kind of like the game of telephone but with music. Then you'll get to see one song completely transform into a new song.

Great idea! I would love to see this in practice!
Amazing idea. I would love to hear it.
Yes

I absolutely love Kiko's style and how he fits into the band, but... I'd take one last run with Marty.
@@leerobbo92 I like him dropping in from time to time like they did in Japan recently.
I can't believe this, it's mindblowing. Thank you all for your service!!
Loved Dirk's playing, and his personality. Very humble and it's nice to see him give some unbiased praise to the original. Banger of a video.
I gotta say - his version is REALLY really good haha
Right?! I'm a huge fan of The Killers but he made this song so much MORE. More everything. Cooler, smoother, dynamic... That's insane talent.
+1
I want this version to listen to as a special release
The wider opening changed the whole feeling of the song. Instead of the anxiety of the fast cymbal hits in the beginning that keep the song desperate throughout, it was a slower feeling of uncertainty that built into the crisis the lyrics depict.
It's crazy how much he showed that percussion is the heart of a song. It's the same song but a completely different experience. So cool
His version is better
I ADORE how good his version is, but it just MADE IT for me seeing him enjoy the original too. That kind of across-the-board joy is just fabulous.
PLEASE PUT THIS ON SPOTIFY, I BEG
This guy just goes to show you who the people playing metal really are ... Smart, extremely talented and in this case someone who seems kind and very likeable. This was a treat to watch!
I never met Euronymous, Dead nor Varg Vikernes so I'll take your word for it.
You can tell just how good of a drummer he is when he’s just listening to the music and he’s fully locked in to the beats. Awesome video
Not just good! You can tell he’s a professional by his attitude and approach.
03:41 this new tempo/groove is AMAZING, is unbelievable how a song can be changed so dramatically by the drums.
It feels much more deliberate. I love it soooo much!
It sounds so chill compared to the original I love it.
I know, right?!
It creates so much more room for the chorus to drive the pace at 4:22
6:33 - 6:46 is chef kiss. he really made the beat his own
An perfect example of how important drums are to music and ultimately every song which uses them!!!
Must agree
As someone who’s not a musician, this is so fascinating to see how just changing one aspect can make that much of a difference in the feel of the song.
Oh for SURE. Thats how genres are born.
fr, ronnie's drums really drive the song and give it energy, dirk's version gives it a very garage grunge rock feel. feel like completely different songs with the different takes on drums
It’s even crazy how some intricate parts of the song almost play out the same probs by musical instincts
Agreed. I really liked the dynamic of it. Energy seemed to really build up throughout the song.
Crazy, I read this before Dirk started drumming and I was thinking "how much could it possibly change the feel of the song" and the second he started I'm like "oh that much!"
Drumming in half time really makes it even more of an emo track, and made the contrast when he sped up for the chorus feel even better.
Very much agree, it's more sludgy, more emo.
word exactly.
This is not emo. 🤣🤣
@@MusicIsASoul Nobody said it was.
@@Efreeti actually mate, you did
What an angel I don’t even know this guy but ugh I love him ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
