    Dirk Verbeuren is/was a legend way before Megadeth - imo they were lucky to get him. Love or hate the genre/s he got known for, when it comes to blast beats/death metal ... he is routinely counted among the best. He brings the "Ringo, Bonham, and Rich" mindset and inventiveness to those genres. He's solid as oak, and has this thing for making familiar sound songs sound fresh. His fill work is amazing.

  • @apolyon652
    @apolyon652 5 місяців тому +55

    Hey Justin, when playing double kick you will typically add a drop clutch to the top hi-hat cymbal which allows you to set an "open" spacing which can be closed by hand - either closing it with your fingers or tapped by a drum stick. This allows you to play with a tight or washy hi-hat sound without using your hi-hat pedal, although you can still use the pedal to close the hi-hat if needed. You can see it in some of the close shots of his left hi-hat. He also uses a remote hi-hat on the right side, which can also be a different size to the main hats for tonal variation. Hope this helps!

    • @drunkenfarmerjohn42

      Band-Maid also uses this heavily. You can watch a lot of their videos and see her doing this because of just how fast she's pedaling the kick.

    Drummer and Drumeo member here. I don’t play double kick but know that for those who do, the left foot moves between hi hat pedal and left kick pedal. Also, Drumeo just released an another video in this series where a Julliard Jazz professor plays “In Bloom” by Nirvana.

    • @NikkLiberos
      @NikkLiberos 6 місяців тому +11

      Yes!!! And most of us who play double kick either have a drop hi-hat clutch (which is pretty nifty. Lars, for example, uses it) OR two hi-hats, one regular and another one by the ride cymbal, either closed tight or half closed, kinda shimmery.

    • @tryste_mx
      @tryste_mx 6 місяців тому +6

      When playing double kick I like to have my left kick pedal tucked in as close to the hi hat pedal as possible, so I can keep my left heel on the hi hat and play open/closed hi hat patterns while being able to throw in double kick triplets.
      When I'm fully wailing on the double kicks, I'll use a hi hat clutch as necessary, like @NikkLiberos mentioned above.

    After Soilwork's "Figure Number Five", I wasn't expecting much for the next record. I picked it up and was blown away. Not only was the songwriting and mix so much better, but it was Dirk's first album with them and I'd never heard drumming like that before. He's a legend in the metal world for his abilities and feel.
    My brother had the pleasure of touring with Soilwork several years ago. He said Dirk is the sweetest dude and he'd pretty much grown into the role of running most of the logistical machinery behind the band. We've been happy to see him get the Megadeth gig, though it does bum me out that he can't really be "Dirk" in that band. But I'm sure he's enjoying the perks.

    Drummer here! You often get very special clamp for the hi-hat stand that bolts it to the kick drum. This eliminates the need for the extra legs that make the stand a tripod, normally. That way you don't have to span quite as far from the left kick to the hi-hat pedal. They're side-by-side once you've done that. I dunno what maniacs like Ginger Baker and Nick Mason did, back in the day. There may have been some hacksaw-and-gaff tape magic at work.
    As for what you do with the hi-hat while you're playing that extra kick drum: A lot of the time the drummer just moves his right hand to the ride cymbal or floor tom. A lot of guys keep their hi-hats fairly close together, even in fully the open position, so that if they are playing hi-hat while doing the dugga-dugga, it's just a bit of slosh. Sterling Campbell keeps his hats so close that you can barely slide the tip of an ink pen in between them, even though he plays single pedal pretty much all the time. Honestly, how far do you need the hi-hats to open, after all?

    The time stamps mentioned are from the original Drumeo video, not this Justin Hawkins video...
    His left foot has access to two pedals. One for the hi-hats and one for the left bass drum. You can see him using those hi-hats at 3:24 during the intro of the song. The hi-hats are clearly moving up/down. On the above head camera view a 3:38 you can see his left foot on the pedal for the left bass drum, and to the left of that you see the pedal for the hi-hats. These hi-hats are the normal bronze color, they're Meinl Byzance series.
    His setup also includes a secondary set of hi-hats, which appear to be setup without a pedal. So those hi-hats are always closed. It's not unusual for hard rock or metal drummers to do this. Some will use a remote pedal which uses something similar to a clutch cable to work the system. Dirks appear to just be mounted and always closed. This pair of hi-hats are black, they're Meinl Custom Classic Dark series. This pair of hi-hats is to the right of the third rack tom, above the ride cymbal. So when you see Dirk striking what sounds like closed hats, with his right hand, he really is hitting closed hats with his right hand. You can see clearly at 3:38 that his right stick is hitting the secondary hi-hats, not the ride.

  • @AllezJuniorTennisMagazine

      @MosheGoldbergTheKing 6 місяців тому +1

      His secondary hats are the same series as most of his crash cymbals. And they appear to be mounted closed w/o a pedal, which is not uncommon.

    Hey Justin, to answer your hi-hat double kick question; when you’re playing double kicks/pedals the hi-hats tend to usually stay open for the duration of the part. Some drummers use their heel to try to keep the hats down whilst the balls of their feet operate the other pedal, sometimes they have half a foot on the hi hat pedal and half a foot on the kick to keep the hats pulsing.
    Another cool thing that exists is a clutch that the drummer can hit to drop the hi hats if they need them closed-ish and stomping on the hi hat pedal locks the clutch to the cymbal again opening it up once more.
    If they’re not doing that, they will have a completely separate hi hat that is always closed or is operated with a remote pedal or sometimes even the latter with a clutch.
    There are many options out there. I hope it was informative!

We've been happy to see him get the Megadeth gig, though it does bum me out that he can't really be "Dirk" in that band. But I'm sure he's enjoying the perks.

    I first heard DIrk like 15 years ago with Soilwork (obviously a metal band), and fell in love. He's so good and just fluid, he can play fucking anything. Recently, he's been sessioning for one of my favorite death metal bands, The Project Hate, and absolutely killing it - on top of, obviously being the Megadeath drummer.

    He has two sets of hats. Left set is standard operated by the pedal and one on the right to play open handed that is fixed in distance between cymbals to give he sound you want. In this case an open washy sound. You can also get remote hi hat operation for those that prefer to play the hats open handed so pedal i=on oeft foot as normal but hats to the right of the kit👍

    He has two sets of high hats, one over by the ride that is just always open. When he wants to do intricate hi-hat work opening and closing them, then yes. He moves his left foot back and forth from the hi-hat stand pedal and the left drum pedal.

      It’s more that he can’t get along with many people on a long term basis. He burns people out and they either quit or get fired once they’re fed up with him. It’s sad really, I’ve met Mustaine and he can be a thoughtful person. But in the band setting, he’s the control freak micromanaging boss that you can only handle for so long.

    "allo Drummer here, Dirk has a second high hat set up to the right that would be set to sizzle mode for double kick sections. His main hats would be set to be pretty tight as he wouldn't be keeping time with the left foot as much as a a jazz drummer would. Droppin the knowledge peace out.

  • @MrCayuga
    @MrCayuga 6 місяців тому

    As for hi-hats, there's multiple ways double bass players play them. Dirk has two, the main one is a regular hi-hat with a pedal stand so it's open when he plays double bass, the right one a remote one without a pedal and it is tight closed.
    If you want to use just one hi hat - you can use a switch lever on top of your main one which is operated by hand - where you can switch it from open to closed.

    When using double bass drums, there is usually either a clutch that will release the top hi hat which will reengage when the pedal is pressed, or a remote hi hat that is always closed. 🤘

    • @MosheGoldbergTheKing
      @MosheGoldbergTheKing 6 місяців тому +1

      You can see that Dirk is using a pair of Meinl Darks as his secondary hi-hats and they're always closed. They're to the right of his last rack tom, near his ride. Which is probably why Justin Hawkins said Dirk was using the ride, when Dirk was actually using the secondary hi hats.

    This is the kind of reaction content I like. You've got a lot to say about everything you hear in this performance, good stuff.
    I'm not a drummer, but my understanding of the high-hat problem is; let's say my left foot is my 'off' foot, ironically meaning it's both bass and the high-hat, but, if this makes sense, I'd have that foot diagonally placed across both pedals for a heel-toe action kinda thing
