Chad is a wildly underrated drummer. He is a humble guy but can really get after it.
He totally killed it
Я правильно понял, что Чад сыграл песню сходу? Прямо в момент первого прослушивания? Если так, то это невероятно 😮
@@craigchapman8220 It's crazy!
I see what you did there @@SeandeDios
I love how he nailed it after 30 seconds. No pun intended
Nice joke 🤣🤣🤣
😂
might even say he killed it
Damnit I came here to say that!!!
You sneaky bastard. I see what you did there.
I'm sorry, but NO ONE will top this "first time hearing"... this is the peak. Chad is a legend.
This was absolutely the peak of this series. Chad delivered everything. The technical ability, power, he served the song, and he played it with the confidence that the audience needs to see.
Oh, a bridge out of nowhere.... cool, no problem.
the dream theater piano guy doing Alicia Keys was insane
My boy from megadeath did really good too. Chad is impressive though he just jumped straight in! Thats craaazzzyyyy lol! Dirk used a methodical approach, but it was just as impressive to me.
Yeah many of the others kinda just had to feel themselves into it and he just straight out let it rip. Fucking legend!
I just love the way that he suppose to hear the entire song first but he kicks right away in the first chorus. The first try nailed it
I also love that he can't help but play along again. That's a dude who loves the drums and loves music
Gen X talent
Do u want another pass? “No, no, fuck no I nailed that….I feel violated!” Then goes and play along with the original knowing what the guys was going to play next chads version was better
That’s because he can count if u can count the recognized tempo u will know what to play.this is a skill as a drummer that u cant teach tho it takes experience and hella of listening to different music and tempos to be able to pick up shit like this first try but first try in 30sec is insane skill
@@SamiDaComposer you still won't know the structure of the song and energy of certain parts , yet he seems to nail both pretty much perfect (well except for that ending bit there XD)
better than a lot of drummers in this series who did listen to the song first.
we the people demand this channel bring this man back and have him do more improvs on songs he hasn't heard. Everytime The Kill starts playing on my playlist, i stop it so i can come to this video and listen to this version instead.
I just did this just now. That's why I came here agaib lol 😂
same, wheb I wanna hear that song, I come watch thus video now😅
yes literally agree 100%!!! now everytime i listen to this song i feel so much joy from knowing this video, & stop to come watch it. which is why im back here again haha
i would LOVE to see him doing more songs on this channel.
Id love to have this over the original
That’s what I just did 😂 I’ll tell my kids this is the original version
As someone who absolutely loves this song, his version is scary accurate for someone who’s never heard the song before 😂
Honestly, I was taken back by how close it was until the very end. Pure skill and talent!
he does session work too, so he's used to it.. plus it's a pretty straightforward song
I could tell he was mainly listening to the bass and vocals for the actual groove. Very professional
he's one of the best EVER at feeling out how his drum part should fit in and benefit the song, so it's not surprising
Drummers are amazing and so fun to watch
"That wasn't bad!". The man listened to a drum-less track for a whole 30 seconds and then played the rest of the song almost note for note. Absolutely insane.
not bad? This guy is a legend
He just didn't stick the end, but he didn't know it was coming so that's understandable!
Haha, 30 seconds.
@@lestrada1351
Perhaps, though i loved how he succeded puting 4/4 rhytm into 3/4. That was SICK!
A whole 30 Seconds to Mars...
Is there anything more mesmerizing than watching someone passionate about their craft in “the zone”? I think not.
The glorious irony, he starts playing first take, first time hearing it 30 SECONDS IN...this is as good as it gets. Thanks Chad. You nailed it indeed.
Chad Smith basically made it 29 Seconds to Mars
xdd
50 Seconds to Mars he said.
Best comment on UA-cam ever ever 😂
😂😂
Perfect
As much as i love Anchorman, Chad Smith is one of Wil Ferrell's best roles. He did so amazing here. Love that he just went straight into it.
I did the same in my comment 😂
Comments like this never get old
Please tell me you're kidding....
@@williamsmith7669 yeah they are kidding. There was a skit a few years ago where Will Ferrell and Chad Smith had a drum battle to see who the real Chad Smith was (they look very similar).

This is probably the best drumming performance I’ve ever seen from ANYONE. Been following Chad since I was a kid. He’s an inspiration and this was just amazing.
it absolutly blows me away what actual humans are capable to do.. even if nobody will ever read this. but i am coming back to this video over and over again for the past months. it is one of the best things i have ever seen in my life as a 45 year old grown man.
This is undeniable. A truly special moment.
He literally felt the song and that's why he anticipated every part. It was a masterclass from a true musician
Just another example of a good rock drummer who has a good sense of timing and feel for his genre. Solid dude. Almost too solid at some point that I had slight doubt BUT seeing him mess up at certain parts that most drummers would mess up when trying to write your take to a pre-existing track. Loved watching it.
...or...maybe he actually knew the song lol. This song was massive and the RHCP and 30STM have headlined festivals together
@@keithwoodcrestYou think dudes from these bands at this age give a shit about watching other bands before or after they play a set. They’re sitting in their dressing room eating cucumber sammiches and getting a massage.

Never realized how talented he was.

I love seeing a true musician respond this way because I feel like they truly understand how insane this is...like at 3:57 ...it's obvious he's learning on the fly and just has that unwritten understanding that musicians have. Which the smiles that come from the booth also reaffirm!!
Chad you nailed it when Jared and his brother made a tictoc giving you love and admiring your renditions. You nailed it plain and simple.
Lol be honest, who hear loves this version even more than the original?
Meeeeeee
I second that
Me honestly!

You're all in for a treat. Thanks to Chad for accepting the challenge!
I'm surprised you found a song he's never heard
Its would be great if you extended each of these to a 3 song thing, getting more challenging and away from their normal playing each song. I know you did 2 with domino but they were both jst 4/4 rock songs. Lets make it more about what they would have played on a session for that song thatn trying to guess what the original drum track is. I actually suprised and pro drummers thy are so worried about getiing it "right" i'd rather hear what thier personality would have brought to the song.
That was fun! 🙏
He actually played that really well for not knowing the song...also drumeo editing gets better and better everyday! ❤
you should post the hardware used to record...
If you had never heard the original version, you would 100% believe this was the original drums for this song. He immediately got the vibe
I agree!
Even having heard the song many times, I don't think I'd notice the difference if it was just playing somewhere in the background. Unbelievable how he did that!
to be fair it is even better on some pats :s
yeah. never heard the original, heard this one first then the original... and i think im more into this drums
Chad’s better imo
Chad is actually not just a drummer, he is a true musician, he is amazing
Dropping the stick, and continuing the tempo while picking up another at his age is what makes Chad an absolute performer. Legendary drummer!
The stick broke!!!
Dude didn’t even need the whole song, took like 30 seconds of it and played a faithful set with his own flavors mixed in. What a legend.
That's what the band should be named..."30 seconds to learn"
@@thechrisandphaedrusshow Not hard to pick up any song, there's tons of streamers who hear the first parts of songs and jam to them no matter what band
@@thechrisandphaedrusshow Pretty much exactly how long it takes to figure out their songs on guitar
@@thechrisandphaedrusshow 😂😂😂😂😂. Comment of the year
I love how he comments about figuring out the time signature…then just before the chorus kicks in, you see him get giddy like the challenge was to reconstruct the drums, and he just figured it out. He was waiting for the chorus to kick in to confirm he was right…and he was, so he took off.
He’s the kind of drummer that makes you feel like a good guitarist.
Hillel Slovak: yo, just told Jesus to save you a spot up here man
SCREAMING (too true)
В РХЧП не может быть слабый ударник. А Смит ....да он и в Лед Зепеллин сыграет и в Дип Пёрпл. Возраст конечно влияет, но не мешает быть Музыкантом.
He's the kind of drummer that makes you feel like you're not bad at making a cup of tea.
I love that it feels he genuinely didn't know it. He can't always tell where it is going, but is reacting in real time.
Some of the other ones I'm eye rolling where they are playing a song they "didn't hear before" that broke records for non-consecutive weeks on charts in a related genre. No mistakes. Shocker.
Right? Missing the first of the two drum beats in the middle proves it for me.
One of the most impressive things about this video is the seemingly infinite number of videos reviewing this one.
This is by no means the most challenging song you guys have given a drummer but it was for sure the most impressive. It's scary how quickly he picked up on it.
I'd say it equals Sugarfoot doing linkin park
Chad was a bit more spot on while staying original
The chorus has kind of weird timing to drum too which makes it a bit difficult imo
Why? Not denying his talent but the beat is obvious and the song is simple.
Just watch Domino playing Mastodon and that was great. I could feel her difficult cause I didn't know the song as well. This 30s to Mars is pretty obvious
1:50 he just is like f it and just goes for it and completely nails the song. Can we get a whole series of just Chad trying different songs?
I say the same thing.
I second this!
I 3rd it. More. Much more please.
that would be sick! I fourth it
Fifth it!! Love the song and Chad is such a cool ass dude!!
One of the greatest "feel" drummers of our time. Chad is a legend.
If you didn't have goosebumps on how accurate his improv is, you're not human
I've already watched this video like 5 times. I want a whole series of Chad doing improv to songs.... That would be gold!
Absolutely.
Drumeo, make it happen!
Yes, we need this!
It's actually a really good idea. A whole album of drum covers, even if they've heard it, just to hear what they would do with it. Make it for charity or something.
He could put out a double album vinyl .that would be bitchin
This shit is sick
That was astonishing, Chad's instinct for musical direction and feel is off the charts
It's almost like he's done this for the past 40+ years
Coming back 7 months later to watch this gem again is fantastic
Imagine being the band's drummer watching this going 'Chad Smith just got me completely'

Gives an outstanding performance almost identical to the original*
What a legend.
this right here!!!! couldnt have put it better
i prefer this version over the original!
he even breaks a stick in the middle of the song and doesn't even get thrown off for a second. It's absolutely mindboggling
He's absolutely heard this song before lol. He knew exactly when all the tempo and energy changes were coming. I could believe that he's never practiced the song before, but he's obviously familiar with it.
@@theKashConnoisseur or, wierd thought, I know, he's Just a really good musician who understands that stuff inherently. If you believe it or not, Most music follows patterns. (And He was acting in the end to make it believable, I guess?)
I love the moment in 3:55 cause he tones it down, then for *literally a split second* he hears the volume swell and know there's a big hit coming. That's musicianship and experience right there.
Yeah, noticed that too! The level of his music intelligence is incredible.
f*cking wizard, that guy. unreal.
Yes but he really tones down around 3:11 mark though, and starts listening to the syncopation.
yah he knows there's gonna be an explosion coming just wow 😮
First time I watched this I got fully body chills when he nailed it at this part. This is probably my 10th watch. His artistry never ceases to amaze me.

It's amazing how you can hear the guitar and singer and just know how to adapt the drums to it.
This is the flow of how music works, he slides right into it.
Chads ability to predict what is coming is insane, it goes beyond just recognizing the time signature it is almost like he can read the emotions of the song. He rides the waves of the song real well.
That comes from a lot of learning from playing with people - its always very interesting because you can see how people learnt growing up from the way they read the music. To be fair the song is somewhat _predictable_ ish in that the builds and falls are obvious, but he bloody nailed it
Stillworld bro >
I can ateste to this. I do consulting on mixes and yes that is a thing we can recognize how each musician performs and their strong suits👍🙏 it can get emotional at times which is wild
Many years of practice and jamming. Popular music styles are structured around certain patterns.
I think this maybe is less impressive that it appears. When he is joking around calling it “some emo band” or saying he “feels violated” it’s probably because this a very typical(of genre) type music. It has some standard breakdowns and builds and basic song structure. It’s easy to predict where changes will come, it’s telegraphed very well and this song doesn’t really do any thing unexpected. He also goes in to hard on some Of the soft parts and quickly adjusts.
All to say, he’s jamming, and that’s something very many musicians are very good at, even ones that aren’t professionals.
But, when you get someone with this level of technicality and musicianship doing it sounds pretty great.
Watching his brain interpret the flow of the song, feeling where it builds and drops, and seeing him anticipate the sections... what a masterclass
Honestly I feel like with how the chili peppers jam live Chad has had a lot of practice making those reads and being adaptable as fuck
That "wall of noise" sound with crash cymbals when used properly...is kinda one of my favorite styles of drumming. The sound reminds me of something universal in music that I think people understand innately.
It reminds me of the wind, or the ocean, or a storm, or the tides, or a fire when you throw some kindling on.
Awesome.

I love how usually drumeo highlights the importance of 'active listening' as drummers hear the song for the first time and then go for a first pass, but Chad Smith being an absolute Chad goes 30 seconds in and practically nails the song, even anticipating the drop! No wonder he's such a prolific studio drummer outside of his work with RHCP, what a masterclass in drumming.
It’s a testament not only to his skills as a drummer, but how comfortable he is with off timings and non-intuitive structure. Makes sense, given the weird shit he deals with playing in RHCP. This is right up his alley. Only major difference between this and RHCP is a lack of California references.
The united states military is using technology and manpower to protect deviant sadistic Child SAers that are misusing their access to advanced tools to spy on, harass, and forcibly SA children. This sometimes follows them into adulthood. Children that are still too young to know that what they are seeing is not normal are being exposed to disgusting deviant content that is forcibly shown to them by hacking their devices. Many victims may not even know they have been targeted by this, because the majority of the actual SA happens when they are slipped something that incapacitates them or they are asleep, the only reason they might know is because the perpetrator may leave behind physical evidence, like bruises, scratches, or bodily fluids. If a victim discovers what has happened to them these worms will misuse equipment and manpower to stalk, shame, mock, and generally try to make the lives of the people affected by this as hellish as possible both offline and online. They follow victims in person and try to intimidate or harass them. They generally use different people who act as though they aren't affiliated with each other and don't do anything they can be arrested for at the time of the harassment. They think they can shame and mock their victims into silence because some of what happens is coerced. These are depraved cowards that gather in groups to harass solitary women and children just to protect deviant SAers. They harass the victims to try to instigate a violent reaction that they can be locked up for. This is a strategy they have used for decades against enemies in different contexts, only the child SAers use it to try to get rid of victims using advanced military technology.

As a musician, this is so gratifying.
You can hear his thought process. He's anticipating some musical things that do happen (and some he expected but doesn't). Every section he pulls back slightly to listen, then moves decisively.
That's really the biggest takeaway for me- how quickly he listens and adjusts. He anticipated the repeated elements and just went for it with 100% confidence. This is a masterclass on responsive playing.
3:10 perfectly illustrates this. He's like "hmm alright I guess I'm playing like this now."
3:20, 3:37, 3:41, 3:52 A single beat where he notices the shift and quickly makes the transition.
Your comment is spot on as Chad’s playing. Really cool to see him working through that.

I point to the Megadeth drummer performing Mr. Brightside without hearing it as a bit of a contrast to this performance here. While he does a good job, it doesn't sound nearly as close to the original drums.

That's the best one yet. Completely immersed in the song, doesn't give a s*** about his image or reputation - open to making mistakes, but the mistakes are not mistakes. He was completely in that song and made it amazing - that's what a true player he is. Lovely to listen to - such a master
100% agree, this is the best one of this series that I have seen, I was totally blown away. Maybe I shouldn't be shocked that a professional musician would be so intuitive, but I didn't expect him to nail it *that* closely without even a first listen to the track.
I love the look in his eyes, just completely and utterly lost in what he's doing. What a wonderful human being.
Also, Paiste 2002s are bloody gorgeous!
Chad didn't even let the song finish before he started playing with it, without ever hearing it before. What a badass.
A true chad
Didn't even let the first chorus finish lmao
That's the challenge...
A lot of people hear a full run through or even take notes before they start playing.
Ive watched this video like 4 times, finally syncd up the song to the video and it is truly scary how close Chad got, its so good tho
That performance deserved a standing ovation.
Chad really is something else. The way he adapts to the shifting dynamics of the song, anticipating the transitions with prophetic accuracy. A true legend and master of his craft.
35 years of jamming with Flea and John will get ya there
@@MajorCanada You're a smart guy... except when you're not!
@@angusbatchelder
You mean 35 years of jamming with Michael Balzary from Australia? Haha.
@@MajorCanada
He gave up on the song at the end of it though. That matters! : P
Lots of people praise Chad's "instincts" but don't realize how long it takes to develop that feel and knowledge base. Lots of respect for a musician that really knows what he's doing.
THANK YOU. This is a honed skill!
It's the purest skill there is. He has the actual ability to create music where none exists, on the fly, and have it suit the song perfectly apparently lol.@@smeetsnoud1
Man I feel the same as a guitarist when I hear a really good Jazz guy, its fucking years of theory and practice. Insane.
Homes, he's 62 and a wolrd class musician. No one is falling out of their chair in surprise here.
Master of improvise. Jamming all the years with flea and John shows. What a legend 👏
It is simply so bloody immaculate. I haven’t heard this song before Chad’s video. It is LOVELY. Disregarding the language barriers, this is on another level. The energy, the competence…. Out of this world. Still not the most watched video on Drumeo. It’l head there. Well done 🤝
As soon as he started playing, I couldn't stop smiling. This blew my mind. What a guy! ❤
Same!!! I also made some sound like wait what while laughing. That was absurd
Same here !!
Same here! Big smile on my face and head banging from beginning to end.
Same!
SAME :)
This is probably the best edition of this show I've seen thus far. Chad is a BEAST. Don't think I've ever seen a drummer break a stick in HALF like that before. That was an AMAZING take.
Check DEEN CASTRONOVO AND TOMMY LEE

Absolutely incredible! Super talented dude! Didn't think I could love this song anymore than I do but he elevated it!
Damn. This is IMMACULATE work
Literally my jaw DROPPED. Even a total non musician like me can see the absolute genius here….what an artist!!
x2
It is like magic to me. That is what makes music so special for so many is that, there is no understanding where this comes from. What a magic moment and gigantic talent.
I saw the thumbnail and thought it was Will Ferrell. Who else?
Edit: Thanks for all the likes!
Chad Smith is a great drummer, no doubt, but what he's showcasing here is decades of experience. Once you get to a certain point with any instrument it just flows, there's no thinking to do, once you know time signature and/or key you can play whatever you want within those bounds.
Drums are a second language for him and he speaks fluently.
@@holdmyweight3597 I think it's Jimmy Fallon's show where Will Ferrell and Chad Smith have a drum off
you could’ve told me this was the original drummer playing this song and i would have believed it. hell of a musician.
100%
i got distracted on something else and thought "why tf am i listening to this" before realizing it was chad
Chad Smith is an absolute LEGEND! So talented, just right off the bat plays an epic set to a song he's never heard.
This is INCREDIBLE to me!!! What a WONDERFUL performance Chad!!! Kudos from an appreciator of drummers and professionals 😊
Shows how insane he is!!! He doesn’t listen through the hole song because that’s how much of a live performer and jammer he is. He just picks up the beat and structure subconsciously and adapts to lift the other musicians. Absolute legend!!!
thats what a musician does lmao, he's average
Well I know of him and his body of work, can’t say I’ve heard of you though so he must be doing something right

OMG!! I love this song and Chad was pretty accurate and for the first time hearing blows my mind. Legend!!
This was fun to watch! I've watched this a few times and am able to understand how he pulled it off. Once he figured out the timing of it, combined with a great understanding of dynamics in songwriting, he was off to the races.
As highly rated as Chad is I still actually think he gets slightly underrated in the drumming community as to how absolutely god tier he is behind the kit - this was super impressive
This puts him in my top 10 for sure. Incredible how he picked up on all of it so fast.
Yeah 100% willing to admit I didn’t think he was god tier before. Now I need to see him do more of these like air to breathe.
hes quickly becoming my favorite member of the band
I think it's because of how simply he plays in RHCP. But I think that's part of what makes him so good, he plays what the music needs instead of needing to show case his chops and technical ability all the time
@@samproctor8421 yeah that makes sense. im glad drumeo is giving him some chances in the spotlight for the drumming audience
So impressive to see 3:40. After the climactic “scream” of the song it could have easily gone straight into a final, bombastic rendition of the chorus, which he played for one measure before he realized it was actually a quiet build-up section. You can see him adapt to it by the next measure, playing more quietly, letting off the cymbals to focus on the toms. Unbelievable musicianship backed up by decades of experience.
Best comment so far
Completely agree
🎯🎯🎯 so freaking cool to watch. The talent is unreal
💯
he should have kept the beat going at 3:40
