Unfortunately for "first time hearing this drummer" series, this is the first one I watched, so all the rest haven't lived up to this absolute masterpiece.

This was absolutely the peak of this series. Chad delivered everything. The technical ability, power, he served the song, and he played it with the confidence that the audience needs to see.
My boy from megadeath did really good too. Chad is impressive though he just jumped straight in! Thats craaazzzyyyy lol! Dirk used a methodical approach, but it was just as impressive to me.
"That wasn't bad!". The man listened to a drum-less track for a whole 30 seconds and then played the rest of the song almost note for note. Absolutely insane.
This is why the chili peppers are so amazing, he is a master at LISTENING. You can hear him pick up elements of what the other musicians are playing instantly and responding. It’s a conversation.
Even having heard the song many times, I don't think I'd notice the difference if it was just playing somewhere in the background. Unbelievable how he did that!
Just another example of a good rock drummer who has a good sense of timing and feel for his genre. Solid dude. Almost too solid at some point that I had slight doubt BUT seeing him mess up at certain parts that most drummers would mess up when trying to write your take to a pre-existing track. Loved watching it.

I love how he comments about figuring out the time signature…then just before the chorus kicks in, you see him get giddy like the challenge was to reconstruct the drums, and he just figured it out. He was waiting for the chorus to kick in to confirm he was right…and he was, so he took off.
This is by no means the most challenging song you guys have given a drummer but it was for sure the most impressive. It's scary how quickly he picked up on it.
Just watch Domino playing Mastodon and that was great. I could feel her difficult cause I didn't know the song as well. This 30s to Mars is pretty obvious
It's actually a really good idea. A whole album of drum covers, even if they've heard it, just to hear what they would do with it. Make it for charity or something.
I love the moment in 3:55 cause he tones it down, then for *literally a split second* he hears the volume swell and know there's a big hit coming. That's musicianship and experience right there.
First time I watched this I got fully body chills when he nailed it at this part. This is probably my 10th watch. His artistry never ceases to amaze me.
I love seeing a true musician respond this way because I feel like they truly understand how insane this is...like at 3:57 ...it's obvious he's learning on the fly and just has that unwritten understanding that musicians have. Which the smiles that come from the booth also reaffirm!!
Chad is the embodiment of what happens when natural talent puts in hard work. The man is a beast. And the booth reaction at 4:05 says it all. Just pure admiration and joy to what they are getting to watch.
Its would be great if you extended each of these to a 3 song thing, getting more challenging and away from their normal playing each song. I know you did 2 with domino but they were both jst 4/4 rock songs. Lets make it more about what they would have played on a session for that song thatn trying to guess what the original drum track is. I actually suprised and pro drummers thy are so worried about getiing it "right" i'd rather hear what thier personality would have brought to the song.
It's rock n roll, just in 3/4. The tropes of how to do it are pretty well known, and if you listen to a song there's cues in the other instruments and singing to feel where you're headed.
8 Months later and I still randomly come back and rewatch this. Just randomly starts 40 seconds into the song and absolutely murders it. Like if someone who didn't know Chad they'd just assume "oh thats the drummer from 30 Seconds to Mars doing a live play through of the kill".
Chad is the perfect example of when talent meets hard work and dedication. Not only he knew the technical aspects of what he was doing, but felt it and was able to effortlessly go with the flow ON HIS FIRST ATTEMPT. Dude is a goddamn genius
As a musician, this is so gratifying. You can hear his thought process. He's anticipating some musical things that do happen (and some he expected but doesn't). Every section he pulls back slightly to listen, then moves decisively. That's really the biggest takeaway for me- how quickly he listens and adjusts. He anticipated the repeated elements and just went for it with 100% confidence. This is a masterclass on responsive playing.
3:10 perfectly illustrates this. He's like "hmm alright I guess I'm playing like this now." 3:20, 3:37, 3:41, 3:52 A single beat where he notices the shift and quickly makes the transition.
I point to the Megadeth drummer performing Mr. Brightside without hearing it as a bit of a contrast to this performance here. While he does a good job, it doesn't sound nearly as close to the original drums.
Wow!!! That’s some true mastery! He caught the cadence, could tell when it was gonna speed up, anticipated when it was gonna die down multiple times and played specifically so you could hear everyone else like he was in the room with the rest of the band. This is Epic!!! I’ve got Goosebumps
Chads ability to predict what is coming is insane, it goes beyond just recognizing the time signature it is almost like he can read the emotions of the song. He rides the waves of the song real well.
That comes from a lot of learning from playing with people - its always very interesting because you can see how people learnt growing up from the way they read the music. To be fair the song is somewhat _predictable_ ish in that the builds and falls are obvious, but he bloody nailed it
I can ateste to this. I do consulting on mixes and yes that is a thing we can recognize how each musician performs and their strong suits👍🙏 it can get emotional at times which is wild
I think this maybe is less impressive that it appears. When he is joking around calling it “some emo band” or saying he “feels violated” it’s probably because this a very typical(of genre) type music. It has some standard breakdowns and builds and basic song structure. It’s easy to predict where changes will come, it’s telegraphed very well and this song doesn’t really do any thing unexpected. He also goes in to hard on some Of the soft parts and quickly adjusts. All to say, he’s jamming, and that’s something very many musicians are very good at, even ones that aren’t professionals. But, when you get someone with this level of technicality and musicianship doing it sounds pretty great.

Almost all drummers that participate in this series hears the whole song first, and then play along remembering what they heard. This guy hears the song for the first time, identify the tempo, and in the chorus he's playing along. What a master!
@@PCP1992 I mean you're not wrong but the sarcasm is totally unnecessary because it's about a lot more than just tempo. Grooves, fills, tempo changes, half time, double time, transitions... matching that, much less nailing all of it in less than one take, is so insanely difficult to do and Chad made it look effortless.
If I was just listening to this and not knowing it was what it was, I would believe it was the original song play. He is one of the best drummers in the world. Love him.
Chad really is something else. The way he adapts to the shifting dynamics of the song, anticipating the transitions with prophetic accuracy. A true legend and master of his craft.
That's the best one yet. Completely immersed in the song, doesn't give a s*** about his image or reputation - open to making mistakes, but the mistakes are not mistakes. He was completely in that song and made it amazing - that's what a true player he is. Lovely to listen to - such a master
100% agree, this is the best one of this series that I have seen, I was totally blown away. Maybe I shouldn't be shocked that a professional musician would be so intuitive, but I didn't expect him to nail it *that* closely without even a first listen to the track.
I love the look in his eyes, just completely and utterly lost in what he's doing. What a wonderful human being. Also, Paiste 2002s are bloody gorgeous!

man, this is so SO good. i keep coming back to this, even after a year. chad smith gives a master class in LISTENING. i always knew he was a good player but i was just blown away by this.
Shows how insane he is!!! He doesn’t listen through the hole song because that’s how much of a live performer and jammer he is. He just picks up the beat and structure subconsciously and adapts to lift the other musicians. Absolute legend!!!
I love how usually drumeo highlights the importance of 'active listening' as drummers hear the song for the first time and then go for a first pass, but Chad Smith being an absolute Chad goes 30 seconds in and practically nails the song, even anticipating the drop! No wonder he's such a prolific studio drummer outside of his work with RHCP, what a masterclass in drumming.
It’s a testament not only to his skills as a drummer, but how comfortable he is with off timings and non-intuitive structure. Makes sense, given the weird shit he deals with playing in RHCP. This is right up his alley. Only major difference between this and RHCP is a lack of California references.

His reaction to the bridge change in the kill was incredible. Suddenly realizing in an instant like "shit, this bridge ain't slowin down" and continuing to nail it perfectly. Hilarious and amazing adaptability. Watching talented talented musicians blows my mind.

That’s because he can count if u can count the recognized tempo u will know what to play.this is a skill as a drummer that u cant teach tho it takes experience and hella of listening to different music and tempos to be able to pick up shit like this first try but first try in 30sec is insane skill

you've really gotta appreciate the different approaches - so many other guests agonize and drill down to get a perfect take, while chad just goes off on instinct, breaks a stick, fumbles around in the dark, adjusts on the fly, and still delivers just as captivating of a performance in the end - excellent lesson for many drummers, including myself
Lots of people praise Chad's "instincts" but don't realize how long it takes to develop that feel and knowledge base. Lots of respect for a musician that really knows what he's doing.
It's the purest skill there is. He has the actual ability to create music where none exists, on the fly, and have it suit the song perfectly apparently lol.@@smeetsnoud1

similar thing happened with Jonathon "Sugarfoot" Moffat when they had him do this, few seconds in, just starts playing to the track without a first listen through
3:56 is the most impressive part of the whole video. He's about to start his crescendo, immediately realizes his mistake since there's a break after the bridge, and makes the correction. Amazing how fast you can watch his brain work through this in real time.
This is probably the best edition of this show I've seen thus far. Chad is a BEAST. Don't think I've ever seen a drummer break a stick in HALF like that before. That was an AMAZING take.
I was sitting in disbelief through the entire video. He literally played some parts perfectly to the note without even hearing them prior to it. What an amazing showcase of a truly genius musician.

This was the most organic and natural play along ever. Miss steps and mistake pushed into forms and fitments that work with the feel of the music just like if he was onstage. You don’t learn that overnight you play your ass off for years heart on your sleeve and master the craft until you can push through anything and make it sound good. Chads a legend and always will be
Genuinely mindblowing. I know he said he "overplayed it" but to me his drumming felt spot-on for pretty much 95% of the song. At some parts I feel like I even enhanced the original.
For me hes right, he overplayed it, he knows when is a clean drumming, one must remember hes the professional here too, he knows what hes talking about.

Same, love this song and original performance, but was grinning ear to ear seeing him hear it for the first time and be able to play like that. I get people have preference and subjective style (clean/aggressive), I'm not a drummer so idk - but the fact the style wasn't even in Chad's typical zone, but he just jumped in like a boss and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing and thought it was awesome! I feel lucky to have seen both bands live. :)

3:43, was expecting a hard breakdown, corrects it in second pass, hears that guitar break, adds the drum filler on the second pass in sync with the guitar flawlessly. Hes so locked into the music it’s insane. I’ve never seen someone do something like this so effortlessly.

@@gabbeausejour5431he's probably counting it in his head... most all pop/rock songs follow a particular pattern through the song: verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus. This one follows that structure (with intro and outro), with measures being: 2, 1, 2, 2, 1, 2... it's a very standard song, except it's in 6/8 timing
I have ZERO rhythm so any drummer amazes me and they have all done a good job here, but damn Chad's speed at picking up the track is god damn incredible.
I don't think I've ever heard anyone describe Chad Smith as an amazing and fresh drummer. Do you even know who Chad Smith is and what bands he has played with over the last nearly 40 years? Please, do yourself a giant favor and do an internet search of Chad Smith Drummer. While you are doing that, when you finish picking your jaw off the floor, look up Danny Carey Drummer and then take some time to watch some videos of both of those drummers playing in the bands that they helped become a couple of the greatest bands playing some of the greatest music from the last 40 years.

How he jumps in at the chorus less than 2 minutes in without hearing the whole song structure and destroys it is beyond genius. You are watching an artist become part of the song right in front of your eyes. He is IN that moment, in that pocket and he's riding that song and aware of everything and unaware at the same time. Just...wow!
It is absolutely insane how DURING his first listen he is actually nailing the parts and he basically perfectly predicts the energy and groove of the upcoming sections of the song.
Funny you say that, I'm here ... again ... and every time I watch it I notice more aspects of his genius than before. Maturity and experience clearly count for everything, especially when some of drumeo's other younger (but brilliant) drummers have shown. This wasn't active listening, this was an intuitive immediate response to an instantaneous stimulus, the guy's a fuckin genius. And I love his left foot action near the beginning.
I'm tripping about how he's playing what he played as the record track plays to compare. I literally can't remember what I had for breakfast 10 minutes later and couldn't explain how to whistle if something as small as a dog is barking down the street
It is like magic to me. That is what makes music so special for so many is that, there is no understanding where this comes from. What a magic moment and gigantic talent.
Chad Smith is a great drummer, no doubt, but what he's showcasing here is decades of experience. Once you get to a certain point with any instrument it just flows, there's no thinking to do, once you know time signature and/or key you can play whatever you want within those bounds. Drums are a second language for him and he speaks fluently.
Holy shit how did he do that. I’ve watched a lot of these and he damn near replicated it. Jesus that’s talent. This dude doesn’t just know drums he picked up on the vibe of the song. That’s wild.
So impressive to see 3:40. After the climactic “scream” of the song it could have easily gone straight into a final, bombastic rendition of the chorus, which he played for one measure before he realized it was actually a quiet build-up section. You can see him adapt to it by the next measure, playing more quietly, letting off the cymbals to focus on the toms. Unbelievable musicianship backed up by decades of experience.
Amazing! Years of craft, experience and improvisational skills all used together to smash this. Seeing him hear where the track is going, and convert it into playing in a split second is incredible. Even on the listen through at the end (6:28), he's picking up little touches and replaying them in an instant.

Just another example of a good rock drummer who has a good sense of timing and feel for his genre. Solid dude. Almost too solid at some point that I had slight doubt BUT seeing him mess up at certain parts that most drummers would mess up when trying to write your take to a pre-existing track. Loved watching it.

I love how he comments about figuring out the time signature…then just before the chorus kicks in, you see him get giddy like the challenge was to reconstruct the drums, and he just figured it out. He was waiting for the chorus to kick in to confirm he was right…and he was, so he took off.

Its would be great if you extended each of these to a 3 song thing, getting more challenging and away from their normal playing each song. I know you did 2 with domino but they were both jst 4/4 rock songs. Lets make it more about what they would have played on a session for that song thatn trying to guess what the original drum track is. I actually suprised and pro drummers thy are so worried about getiing it "right" i'd rather hear what thier personality would have brought to the song.

As a musician, this is so gratifying.
You can hear his thought process. He's anticipating some musical things that do happen (and some he expected but doesn't). Every section he pulls back slightly to listen, then moves decisively.
That's really the biggest takeaway for me- how quickly he listens and adjusts. He anticipated the repeated elements and just went for it with 100% confidence. This is a masterclass on responsive playing.
3:10 perfectly illustrates this. He's like "hmm alright I guess I'm playing like this now."

Chads ability to predict what is coming is insane, it goes beyond just recognizing the time signature it is almost like he can read the emotions of the song. He rides the waves of the song real well.
That comes from a lot of learning from playing with people - its always very interesting because you can see how people learnt growing up from the way they read the music. To be fair the song is somewhat _predictable_ ish in that the builds and falls are obvious, but he bloody nailed it

Many years of practice and jamming. Popular music styles are structured around certain patterns.
I think this maybe is less impressive that it appears. When he is joking around calling it “some emo band” or saying he “feels violated” it’s probably because this a very typical(of genre) type music. It has some standard breakdowns and builds and basic song structure. It’s easy to predict where changes will come, it’s telegraphed very well and this song doesn’t really do any thing unexpected. He also goes in to hard on some Of the soft parts and quickly adjusts.
All to say, he’s jamming, and that’s something very many musicians are very good at, even ones that aren’t professionals.
But, when you get someone with this level of technicality and musicianship doing it sounds pretty great.
His ability to anticipate what's coming next and then instantly adapt is impressive. Love Chad Smith.

Almost all drummers that participate in this series hears the whole song first, and then play along remembering what they heard. This guy hears the song for the first time, identify the tempo, and in the chorus he's playing along. What a master!

That's the best one yet. Completely immersed in the song, doesn't give a s*** about his image or reputation - open to making mistakes, but the mistakes are not mistakes. He was completely in that song and made it amazing - that's what a true player he is. Lovely to listen to - such a master

I love how usually drumeo highlights the importance of 'active listening' as drummers hear the song for the first time and then go for a first pass, but Chad Smith being an absolute Chad goes 30 seconds in and practically nails the song, even anticipating the drop! No wonder he's such a prolific studio drummer outside of his work with RHCP, what a masterclass in drumming.
It’s a testament not only to his skills as a drummer, but how comfortable he is with off timings and non-intuitive structure. Makes sense, given the weird shit he deals with playing in RHCP. This is right up his alley. Only major difference between this and RHCP is a lack of California references.

you've really gotta appreciate the different approaches - so many other guests agonize and drill down to get a perfect take, while chad just goes off on instinct, breaks a stick, fumbles around in the dark, adjusts on the fly, and still delivers just as captivating of a performance in the end - excellent lesson for many drummers, including myself

Chad has *absolutely* heard this song before... that's why he caveated his statement at the beginning about "or it's not in the drummer's playstyle". Obviously still an awesome performance, but I don't buy for a second that he hasn't heard this song before.
I watched this video and reactions to it a million times, that's so inspiring and touching, Chad is God-like, but my favourite part is booth reaction on 4:05 😂 I want full 3 minutes of just their faces 😂
Gosh it’s the best part of the video. Everyone in that room is ecstatic, as I would be.
This was the most organic and natural play along ever. Miss steps and mistake pushed into forms and fitments that work with the feel of the music just like if he was onstage. You don’t learn that overnight you play your ass off for years heart on your sleeve and master the craft until you can push through anything and make it sound good. Chads a legend and always will be

Genuinely mindblowing. I know he said he "overplayed it" but to me his drumming felt spot-on for pretty much 95% of the song. At some parts I feel like I even enhanced the original.
For me hes right, he overplayed it, he knows when is a clean drumming, one must remember hes the professional here too, he knows what hes talking about.

Same, love this song and original performance, but was grinning ear to ear seeing him hear it for the first time and be able to play like that. I get people have preference and subjective style (clean/aggressive), I'm not a drummer so idk - but the fact the style wasn't even in Chad's typical zone, but he just jumped in like a boss and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing and thought it was awesome! I feel lucky to have seen both bands live. :)

If he never had a "stardom" moment, this is it... this is something people can see him in his element, having fun, and just.. ripping the living fuck out of this song.. and it sounded incredible. So. Definitely amazing to hear/see.
3:43, was expecting a hard breakdown, corrects it in second pass, hears that guitar break, adds the drum filler on the second pass in sync with the guitar flawlessly. Hes so locked into the music it’s insane. I’ve never seen someone do something like this so effortlessly.

This one follows that structure (with intro and outro), with measures being: 2, 1, 2, 2, 1, 2... it's a very standard song, except it's in 6/8 timing

Funny you say that, I'm here ... again ... and every time I watch it I notice more aspects of his genius than before. Maturity and experience clearly count for everything, especially when some of drumeo's other younger (but brilliant) drummers have shown. This wasn't active listening, this was an intuitive immediate response to an instantaneous stimulus, the guy's a fuckin genius.

Chad Smith is a great drummer, no doubt, but what he's showcasing here is decades of experience. Once you get to a certain point with any instrument it just flows, there's no thinking to do, once you know time signature and/or key you can play whatever you want within those bounds.
Drums are a second language for him and he speaks fluently.

After the climactic “scream” of the song it could have easily gone straight into a final, bombastic rendition of the chorus, which he played for one measure before he realized it was actually a quiet build-up section. You can see him adapt to it by the next measure, playing more quietly, letting off the cymbals to focus on the toms. Unbelievable musicianship backed up by decades of experience.
