I have the same issue with a beautiful 60's wool minidress I found - perfect fit at the waist and hips, won't do up over my wide shoulders. It's a little long for me though, so here's hoping I can chop enough of the bottom off to fill in the back.

I didn’t need it bigger at the waist & thought maybe others would want to see it done with a waist seam already sewed. I like it wayyyyy better then the original too! 💕🎀💕 Thanks for watching 🎀
This is amazing I found a dress I really wanted that fit everywhere else except the very top. It did not have a zipper it was a pull on and had straps. The bust needed a few inches to be breathable. I thought about adjusting it since it was a thrift store find but in the end a few things came together and I left it. How would you adjust a dress without a zipper and just side seams. It was ll on fabric and long and had. A lining.
Thanks so much for this video! Do you have advice for how to let out a dress that has a zip on the side? When I have measured the dress the gap to fill is not really a triangle but rather more of a rhombus/oval. Thank you!
Hi, For adding to the side seam with a zipper, you will need to remove the zipper, pattern a triangle in half and add extra seam allowance where the zipper is going at that half point. Then insert the two half triangles, then put back in the zipper. Hope that helps. You want to make sure you keep your dress balanced so it does not pull more to one side. Thank you for watching.

I've never done that before. i have no actual "triangle" to draw from.
Have you done any videos on making a dress bigger that has sleeves? 😅 I watched this and was like, oh that'll be so easy! And then I realized... Sleeves are scary. 😂
Hi! I know this is an old video, but I have a small problem. The zipper on the back of my dress goes in the middle, similar to a side zipper. How would I then get that measurement for the triangles? Thank you!
@sew Anastasia, I just bought a dress that’s 1 size too small, but they sold out of the size small, if you decide to take your clothes to a professional tailor, do you still have to purchase the fabric on your own? Or can they use the bottom hem line to fill in the side of the bust & side to open the waist as well, I’m very short, so losing some length shouldn’t be a prob, Ty, I hope I hear back from you!
Have you done this with pants that don’t fully zip in the front? I was thinking of opening the side seams to do this same kind of trick (or paying a seamstress to do it). Would this same technique work?
I have this dress that i need to add some stretchy black material to both sides . I will leave the back alone. It has a zipper. What the 1st thing I need to do , and the 2nd thing, 3rd, and so forth. Give it to me step by step please. Geraline Davis
Alright, Geraline, here's the deal. First, grab that stretchy black material and measure it to fit the sides of your dress. Cut it and pin it in place, making sure to avoid messing with the back and its precious zipper. Then, get your sewing game on and stitch that material onto the dress. Don't forget to give it a good press with an iron for that professional look. You got this!
I’m a cosplayer and I really want tot attempt this but I’m afraid it’s difficult to find the same fabric as the storebought costume. Can I do this with a stretch fabric?
I have a dress I want to let out but the zipper is on the side. I’m thinking I can still use this technique but just add the extra fabric to both side seams of the dress.. idk I’m kids stumped any recommendations?
Hi Anastasia, can you help me understanding something math-wise? So your top opening was about 2.5 inches. You then cut out two pieces of extra fabric, each 2.25 inches wide at the tops which included a half inch seam allowance. Then you attached those at the sides- wouldn't that make the triangle fabric (minus the seam allowance) 1.5 inches each, for a total of 3 inches, making the alteration .50 inch bigger than the original 2.5inch opening? Maybe my math is totally wrong (very possible) but I'm confused :(
I don’t remember doing it but basically make it as big as you need it plus seam allowance. Happy sewing! Maybe I added ease? I don’t remember exactly what I did unless I go back & watch it but I hope that helps.
What are the other ways to sew in the second lining seam without flipping it inside out? Do you have/recommend any videos or sources that provide a kinda general list of the different options? I'm not removing any other seams or the zipper so I think it would be easier for me to do an alternative (especially because I have a tendency to make holes when seam ripping , oops)
I have to add panels to a unpleated cheer skirt, and I'm freaking out. It has stripes down the sides and a back invisible zipper. Should i do panels or just replace the entire back panel, zipper and all?
Great question! I think with shooting it took about 3/4 hours. So if I sat down to sew it, probably around 60-90 mins. Hope that helps. Thank you for watching.
I have a dress I want to do this with, like yours it has a velvet bodice and is lined, however it also has sleeves. I’m not sure how to go about it because of the sleeves.
Is there a technique that works for letting out a dress with a side zipper? I’m ordering a dress online in the largest size available, and noticed in the product images that the zipper is on the side and not the back.
Hi, You can take out the zipper and add the fabric and then put the zipper back in. If it is too tight in the waist too then your stripe of fabric that you put in can go all the way down to your waist.
I bought the most fantastic dress but it is my size but clearly not made for some with a large bust. I need 1-2 inches in the bust to be able to zip it.

Can you show how to make a lase up at the back?
Totally! I am going to do that one next week! Stay tuned! Thank you for watching.
I have a dress I want to do this with, like yours it has a velvet bodice and is lined, however it also has sleeves. I’m not sure how to go about it because of the sleeves.
You can take off the sleeves, let out the bodice & let out the sleeves & then see them back on
Is there a technique that works for letting out a dress with a side zipper? I’m ordering a dress online in the largest size available, and noticed in the product images that the zipper is on the side and not the back.
What type of dress form do you like? I’m trying to decide how much to spend :/
I would buy one with a collapsable shoulder.
How would you let out a dress with a side zipper? Also is there a way to let out a dress when it’s too tight on the waist?
Hi,
You can take out the zipper and add the fabric and then put the zipper back in. If it is too tight in the waist too then your stripe of fabric that you put in can go all the way down to your waist.
What if I need to also make the waist larger too at the same time?
Then you can go all the way down. Make it a rectangle & not a triangle.
what about a long sleeved dress that needs expanding from the top?
You can add to the sleeves & side seams or center back
I bought the most fantastic dress but it is my size but clearly not made for some with a large bust. I need 1-2 inches in the bust to be able to zip it.
I hope you are able to fit it!
in theory could you hand sew something like this? i know it would be more time but i dont have a sewing machine at home
Yes you could
