Girl. GIRL. I screamed at the pocket tip XD You just saved me an incredible amount of time! and I 100% will think of you every time I sew jeans. The button is clutch! These are the kind of things that separate the professionals from the rest of us faux-pros.
I came here a year late to this video to comment this EXACT thing. Literally shouted out loud at the screen- this is the single most common sense but never heard it anywhere else tip that I’ve ever gotten in 20 years of sewing 😭😭😂
Great tips! The small gather is called an ease stitch. You make a piece of fabric slightly smaller to fit another piece by easing it with a very small gather 😊
agreed. it's often used to set in sleeves as well. you "ease" them into the armscye when the cap is very slightly larger or sometimes even when they are the same but the fabric is stiff or otherwise difficult to deal with. you don't actually see any gather but by doing the basting and small gather, it makes it much easier to fit the cap into the armscye.
I have a client I know is going to be the beneficiary of the pocket solution next week! This is something I'd never come across in over 60 years of sewing... fantastic!
@@DowntownTailoring Hi great tips, obviously coming from a lot of experience. I did not get the hem though (it was not part of the tutorial). The full circle silk skirt.
@@DowntownTailoring One thing that I know from midi lenght wide skirts - if a woman has very wide hips and and / or an ample backside that can also influence the hem lenght (even with a material w/o stretch). Maybe not with a full skirt there should be enough material to smooth over the bdy parts ;) . I know the drill of having an appointment for fitting (when the garment is sewn from scratch) and then the seamstress would use her gadget to get the right length (a botte with chalk dust that is on a stativ and she puffed the line on).

@@xyzsame4081 OMG!! My Mum used one of those when I was little! I probably haven’t seen one in forty years though - I took a break from sewing between when I left home and when I had kids. The term is Ease (ease stitch) is a tiny gathering amount spread out over a long distance that barely takes the fabric into a smaller run. Great tips here. You go girl!

Loved how you explained things in a straightforward but good-humoured way. I'm really into altering my clothes to get them to truly fit and flatter, but I'm only at the more basic stages of hemming garments and replacing linings. But the difference it makes has generated lots of requests from friends and family. I always learn something when I watch you, even this old gray dogs brain matter still can learn. I’m glad you examples adjusting the front crotch. I have this problem often when buying pants that fit well everywhere except there. The legs fit ok, it’s just like the pants are made for larger tummies. I’ve tried to “simple adjust” but my method is not idea. Thanks so much for sharing your expertise with us!
The button. I have struggled so often with over-thick seams very often because I am a weaver. I always resort to hand sewing them and machine up to them. I will indeed send a thanks in the air to you every time I use it.
"Ease stitch" is on the neckline of the dress. It's when one edge is lightly gathered, then sewn to an edge that is flat. It doesn't result in puckering, since the clothing curves on the body. Set in sleeves use this stitch.
The word you are looking for is ease-ing. This is also done on the head of a sleeve to make it more rounded and a circular shape. This is an excellent idea! I love listening to you and watching all of your expertise!! A wealth of info!
It’s called “easing in” the fabric. You do it like a gather but don’t actually make it ruffle. You use this technique when sewing in the back part of sleeves.
What is your name mam? I believe you'd make a great teacher of teaching us Spanish as well. I can listen for hours, hearing you speak, imparting your knowledge thoughts, and or feelings about a subject. Judy here. 👍🏾🇹🇹

Hi Evelyn!!! I’m so glad you learned some new tips here! My button back was actually inspired by the Jean-a-ma-jig but I was hoping to make it a little more accessible for everyone! Thank you so much for your kind support throughout all this time! Cheers! ❤️🥰
Just couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw your tip for the pockets 😮 and the button tip will be very helpful in the futur. Thanks so much. Your a clever lady 👌
Your button trick can be done with any fabric that is thick. You're very clever. People don't want to pay for your labor, skill and knowlege so I appreciate your tricks.
The English Word: Ease stitch. Commonly used for easing a sleeve cap into the top of the arm opening. matching the center & side notches. You stitch on the sleeve top between notches on pattern, do gentle gathering. Then put in the seam. Remove the gathering tread. This releases the gather & looks normal. This same technique is what you applied to the neckline with beautiful results! My one question would be if you shortened the straps while you have the neckline open in the front? Love your showing the alterations easily... and the ripping out is important for you to get in & do the work more easily. Awesome! Excellent tips Miss Downtown Tailoring! Like other comments... I learn different ways for sewing, even after years of experience.
Thank you! I thought that this word only applied for sleeves and extra material at the sides for movement. But it totally makes sense after you hear it 😁 I indeed shortened the straps from the front. Cheers!

Yessss that is the word! Thank you so much, I’ve been looking for it for so long. Also, thank you!
Thanks so much 🥰
This is such a valuable video! Thanks so much for sharing these tricks with the world! xoxo
Save the pockets while saving time ... yes, please. I'm always a fan of working smarter, not harder. Plus, it makes them a little deeper. Kudos!
🥰🥰🥰
It’s called “easing in” the fabric. You do it like a gather but don’t actually make it ruffle.
You use this technique when sewing in the back part of sleeves.
thats the one
Yep, you got it! Matching the ease!!
At last someone who makes sense of what I don't understand . Thank you !
🥰🥰🥰
What is your name mam? I believe you'd make a great teacher of teaching us Spanish as well. I can listen for hours, hearing you speak, imparting your knowledge thoughts, and or feelings about a subject. Judy here. 👍🏾🇹🇹

@@DowntownTailoring Ok. Thanks Aida. Nice name for you. It so suits you. 😘💕🇹🇹
To gather a little to adjust: to "ease". Great tips, thanks!
Oh my, I love all of these tips the pocket one is my favorite so glad to learn it. Also, my machine came with a special piece I think it is called a"Jean-A-Ma-Jig" it works the same way as the button but seriously I am glad to learn the button that would be much easier than the Jean-A-Ma-Jig as always thank you you are going to be at 50,000 subscribers soon :)
Thanks so much! I, myself, had to do it a few times to believe that it was that easy. Cheers!
Of all the people that live near me I wish there were a fun person like you, lol! You are just so fun as you show alteration tricks.
Your button trick can be done with any fabric that is thick. You're very clever. People don't want to pay for your labor, skill and knowlege so I appreciate your tricks.
Thank you 🥰
The English Word: Ease stitch.
Cheers!
I am SOOO glad I discovered this channel! Sometimes the algorithm works!
That trick with the jeans is amazing. I would have never thought of that.
