  • This is from our first LIVE stream on UA-cam. We'll be exploring a series of LIVE episodes this year that explore what golf fundamentals are keeping you from playing your best.
Like with any lesson, I always like to start with GRIP. In this episode I talk about my history as a golfer, what I've learned about how I like to put my hands on the club, the role of both hands in the golf swing and how to check your grip to be sure it's right for you. At the end, I also took some viewer questions to help clarify elements of each topic.
Don't just play golf. Understand it.
You can learn step by step online with Mike at malaskagolf.com. Follow The M-System to develop the skills you need to become a complete player.

I come from a physical medicine profession and I love anatomy and technique. This is definitely the very best video on HOW TO GRIP THE CLUB by far. Also that the left limb and the right limb have their own specific role. Brilliant. Many years ago I introduced a friend to golf and after her first game, where she shot in the low 90’s she said “ So what is so difficult about this game” and I can remember answering “ you wait ‘til you learn how to hit the ball properly then you will realise how difficult golf can be.”

An update, Tonight at the range I made the change in my grip, just as Mike suggested. Took me 3 or 4 swings to get it sorta right. Still have to Relax my shoulders, arms and hands more, but I was able to hit my 23 * rescue 195 yrds carry, swing speed ramped up to an amazing 110 mph. Now, some may say, that's not all that great, but, I'm 72, have a curved & twisted spine, and arthritis in my lower back, Once I get more relaxed I expect to see even better results. So, a Huge thank you Mike..

@@christopherwhitehead8946 actually it was a 22* rescue, not a 23. Last night I bested that 195, and hit 2 with my 22* rescue one went 224 and one went 222 yards. Thank you..the stars must have been aligned just right..lol

I'm glad I watched this again. I used to play with a left hand grip that was so strong, a friend called it "a three knuckle grip with the wrong three knuckles".😏 In an effort to become more orthodox, I made it a lot more neutral. It's been years of frustration. Every time I get the nerve to try my old grip again, it just works, but it's so odd, I feel like I have to return to something more orthodox. When I bend over and hang my left arm, as you suggest, my hand falls right into the position of my crazy strong left hand grip. So, I'm off to the range to take back my game. Thanks, Mike.🙏🏻

I had no idea how "neutral" my grip had become until I viewed this video. I was one who opened the clubface in the first 12 inches of takeaway and spun it back for contact. I hit some decent shots from time to time and got my HC down to 7. After a great round two weeks ago (one-over) everything fell out is sync and my last two rounds were 92s - one being in league competition.
After viewing this video I decided to commit to changing my grip and I watched Mike's balancing video. Just came back from the range and wow! If a lightning storm wasn't approaching I could have easily stayed there for another two hours. It was fun again, much less effort, and I could finally feel the club in front of me and slightly moving me back to lever the shaft. A really nice pattern appeared and my 140yd- 8 iron was now 7-10 yards further.
    Thank You Again Mike

You described me to a T! I stumbled onto the idea of strengthening my grip because I had a neutral grip and I tended to cup my wrist. This resulted in timing issues in squaring up the face. I tried a strong grip as a last resort to get some consistency and I was amazed!! This led me to search for more information and I found this video. Feels good to know that the fix I "discovered" is a legit way to play.

Mr. Malaska, I have never had control over the ball like I had today. I was effortlessly commanding the clubface and damn did it feel good. Golf instruction today is how to change gears, where learning the grip is like knowing how to operate the clutch. Your instruction and communication ability is world class. Not a wasted word and this video might just be the most important 30 minutes I have ever spent learning about the golf swing. Thank you, it really sunk in and was a pleasure to learn from you.

  • @jackbombeeck4958

One thing i always atruggled with was this: at setup there is an angle between the arms and the club, and with low grip pressure the club and arms will want to be in a straight line during the downswing. This results in the clubface being opening at impact, and the ball taking off to the right. I've tried to forcefully keep the setup angle intact during impact, which can only be done with tight hands and arms, and it gives very inconsistent results. Now you talk about the strong left hand grip, and that makes perfect sense! With the club and arms extended to a straight line, the clubface is square! 😊. Thanks for your videos.

I've been looking at your site for the past two days and your first golf live brings back memories of how I used to play. Am really looking forward to going out tomorrow and playing. Mike, Im so glad I found your youtube page a year ago. I have had the same experience as you. Im not on your level of play but I went through the same stages as you. I was naturally good on my own. I shot very consistent gold usually around 80, 81ish. I had some flaws which some early lessons fixed. Then I started with some real lessons in my early 20's and some stuff work but mostly I kept getting worse and worse when they changed my grip and had me rolling the club as well. I was told the toe of the club up at hip high was square. I had a strong left hand and was told I needed to weaken it. All the same stuff. It was a blessing to find you and tell me the stuff I was told was bad was actually good stuff. I have now found consistency again.. I understand it so much better. I was a horrible layer offer of the club and I know now the the stuff I was taught to fix it actually made it worse. So glad to be back on the right path now.

This is the best video about grip I watched so far and it solved my issue for sometimes hitting the ball with lower launch angle and hitting the top of the ball. Before I watched this video I thought my issue could be that I did not have cosistent club head height control. After I watch this video and use left arm to natually lift the club and check the head face I noticed that the head face sometimes too close. After I correct the face I could consistently have good contact. What I learned is that after I hit several balls the head face gradually become too close. Not sure if my grip too loose. Anyway now I always check the head face using the method in this video and the contact becomes much consistent!

Excellent video. So many videos out there on increasing lag and holding wrist angles and making sure you don’t flip. What they never say is that everybody releases their wrist angles or “flips” the club at some point. The key is when the flip happens in conjunction of course with rotation.

when I first started playing golf my friend who was a golfer set up my grip interlocking with a strong grip and a few other things. I remember how awkward it felt at first but I hit it good with a small slice with driver, straight with irons.I was in my 20,s and I loved to swing with my whole body aggressively over time I lost that whole swing. Your videos are bringing me back to that grip and everything is naturally falling into place my hip shoulders feet and trusting the swing and just letting it go. I feel 40 years younger.

This was what I’ve been looking for... the subject of the grip on the internet ( UA-cam ) is all over the map! The majority of instructors ( teachers ) push the neutral grip. But Mike has explained the physiology of this in a way that makes perfect sense, in terms of an athletic motion. Now I just need to apply it to my game. Thanks Mike!

Thank you for clarifying the golf grip and what a golf swing consists of. i have discontinued previous swing, and am now swinging easily and effortlessly after only one practice !! and im only swinging the club with 50 or maybe 60 % power...the ball just clips along with beautiful trajectory and length. I swing the club now with no rigidity or horrible swing thoughts lol. I'd been swinging that all my life and thought it was suppose to be that difficult...was I ever wrong. This is such a game changer, literally. i am still in the infancy stage this natural swing and i cannot wait to go out to the again and have purpose in my practice. I can fade or draw the ball now or simply hit it straight. i appreciate all the work and research you put into this, and I am so fortunate to have found your online teachings. Looking forward to watching more of your videos, and playing golf soon :)

I’ve been playing off and on for more than six decades. Of course, when I first learned the game as a caddy, we were taught the neutral grip. I made it work most of the time, but about ten years ago I began to lose the physical ability to time my swing consistently. This is hands down the best explanation of how grip influences swing. I’m in the process of changing my swing to one based on a strong grip, but my instructor has not explained the physiology behind what we are doing. NOW I understand and can happily commit to the process ⛳️

Hello Mike, I should thank Be Better Golf for all his hard work and getting out there to bring in the greats like yourself. Through Be Better Golf I found your channel. I also want to thank you for share your insight on the golf grip. I was having the very same issue where originally I used a strong grip by mere accident. To later be told that the grip I was using was going to cause inconsistent shots. After that I was forced to learn to play a fade that started out as a 60 yard slice. Early on I had to aim way left if I wanted to keep it in the fair way. After awhile I was able to tame that slice and produced a fade. But never hit a draw until recently when I started playing around with my grip. I simply truned my left hand clockwise laid my right hand over it and BAM! It was going to the left. It took some tweeking to turn a hook into a draw. But magically I was hitting a draw, the first ever. The lecture you give in this video really helped me understand what was actually happening. I can't thank you enough. I'm still fairly new to Golf ⛳️ and have alot to learn, I totally get it now the grip is where it all starts. Thanks again Mack...

    Mr. Malaska,
Important stuff here Sir! Your work is producing some quite profound results in my personal and professional life.
Listening, watching, & learning intently is serving well, not only on the practice putting greens, the range and course, but also in my professional endeavors. I am taking many of your poignant words, concepts, and ideas along while working with clients in basketball skills training, and when coaching H.S. Bball.
Your examples and experience w/body mechanics (& how those few years probably produced lesser results ) was refreshing to hear, as I have had similar issues. Why waste time? Use what works for you in this “art form”. Yes, science is great for sports, but there’s a time and place, and time is of the essence, and there’s no time waste!?
To sum it it up...I appreciate you Sir, and it is great to have access to your channel! Stay UP!
    Coach Lambert

    Mike hi. Great lesson! Here’s a mini aha moment I got from this video;
The reason a lot of practice swings are perfect and then followed by bad shots is because with a practice shot the brain knows there’s no ball to hit straight and so has no need to make compensations. The moment you step up to the ball it’s a different story. No wonder you often hear “ I mess up as soon as I have a ball in front of me”

I hooked a club to something then pulled like his doctor did. I found if I held lightly my grip spun around as it slid down the shaft to the same position every time, if I started weak or strong, spun to same spot, a little stronger than my old grip. Same result when doing the hanging method or just seeing what felt good pulling hard, but thought I'd share this as it gives me perfect confidence this will help me with my unintentional fade on all my shots!

    Mike,
I love you man! That was by far, the BEST Grip UA-cam video I have ever seen! Amazing stuff! I will use this grip during today's round and will leave you another note afterwards to let you know how things went out there on the course. Thanks again, this makes uber sense to me now!

Love this! I’ve realized I have a neutral grip and fight the slice constantly by doing exactly what he says! Rolling the right wrist! Thanks a ton Mike!

put the club face down so it feels heavy once... and then grip it with your fingers. Soon as you get it there... move your body so it makes the face look square from your perspective behind the ball. It does WONDERS. Soon as I discovered it, I can see 4 knuckles when I use driver. I can't even describe how far and how effortless I hit the ball. 310 is average and on good courses with some roll I hit 340+. I'm only 170 lbs but pretty flexible. And have an immense passion for the game :P

Mike Austin teaches a lot like this. In fact I feel it's almost identical.
The more I mess with pushing off the ground to get the club to whip through, I grasp the concept and things sort of work into place, grip, posture, etc.
Good stuff as always Mike. Cheers from Minnesota.

Yeah made this change with my left hand grip as I did more as a kid and matched right hand to club face and man it felt so much better and more free. Once I felt the under hand throw, I could rotate (straighten left leg and feel pressure in left heel cleat) and let club head fall in place especially with driver the push cuts went away --thanks Mike!

throughout my search of the "golden tip". I think i've found it. I've always been able to understand how the body moves but i was sure my grip wasn't right. This confirmed my idea of the right hand movement and i was able to make the switch confidently. I played today and to my surprise I scored -1 under par where as my average is always around +9. game was so much easier and my swing felt much more free and fluid. Thanks Mike, I'll shout you out if i get to pro one day hopefully.

Mike. I think you look at the game in a great way. I see so many instructors teach one way because others teach it that way. Everyone is an individual and their bodies, how their joints align are different. Gripping and swingingin a way that is natural to you is so important. Can't wait to try this today. will update with the outcome soon. Thank you for sharing what happened to you and how you understood if you had success with something...why change it????? A cookie cutter approach is something I hate and has kept be getting better. Time to chnge that!

Wow. What a difference your ‘strong’ grip and wrist lever is making to my game, Mike! They both still feel very strange but I have just played my best ever competition round - net 64 - without touching a driver, wood or hybrid. Absolutely over the moon. Can’t wait to implement your pivot technique. You have new website subscriber.

Saw this episode yesterday and played yesterday afternoon. I immediately became comfortable with the grip (maybe because I now have some understanding of why). Had a couple early misses left but it was straightened out by hole 3. I'm a cerebral golfer but in trusting the grip, I found myself thinking less on the course. Can't wait to get back to the course to see if I still have it!

I apologize for re-commenting but OMG Mike(!), this has helped me so much! EVERYTHING gets better with the grip that's natural for you, (Strong!). Better body movement, because it believes in the swing; straight ball flight; distance and I'm just beginning to integrate it. I naturally want to default to the same grip I've had for 20 years and which hasn't worked for 20 years, LOL!
