Good grief, someone who actually listens to Mike and doesn’t feel he has to be constantly interrupting to make HIS presence felt. Well done Eric, great video as always Mike.
I think this whole video is pure gold. Watched like 50x. Today Aug25th at driving range, finally had eureka moment of lower body imagining this video. As soon as take away occurs, I'm moving force to the left leg femur region. When I'm almost completing back swing (with my right hip out of the way) I hit the left leg gas pedal and 👉push back (feel my left hip out of the way ) and my arms and hands goes down and club head out. Eureka! It was the first time I felt lower body and the upperbody combined. And it was repeatable! Hit like 90balls with couples of misses only. Before today, I was hitting more focused on upperbody. Finally, now I figured out the complete movement and you can feel the club head speed and pure solid impact, the sound is amazingly different. Took me like 50days to understand the complete Malaska move to hit EFFORTLESSLY Pw 150-155yrd bombs, 45°flying high balls with that punch like the pro's. Mr Malaska is by far the best teacher. I've watched pretty much all of his videos including the ones at the Be Better golf channel. Thank you sir. You changed my game.
This is not right. This is like mixing DC with Marvel Comics. Cogorno is from Pennsylvania, and Malaska is in Arizona, then all of a sudden they're together? That transition move is the key but its hard to master. I think he is absolutely right that your swing with your arms begins at position 2, and your turn is what squares the club face. Monte Schoenblum says roughly the same thing. I have a really hard time coordinating the rotation of the hips, with movement of the upper body. This is the first video I saw that illustrated what I was thinking which was I was pulling everything left on mid to short irons. If your pivot of your hips pulls your upper body too you swill over the top, It seems to me the arms have to drop down to position 2 to avoid swing over the top. Interested in your thoughts.
Interesting. Thing is I have to adopt the extreme motion that Duval does but in reverse! In other words if I feel like I’m trying to go under plane I might almost shallow it enough. The second half of this video applies generally to good players - definitely not people like me. Might need to make this clearer? (Btw I have been working on Leadbetter A Swing drills - which is almost the opposite of the Duval drill)
@@gregglister8074 Most Low handicappers have the reverse problem of most high handicappers. Meaning that the low handicapper fights getting the club too far under whereas the high handicapper fights the club being too far over (Over the Top). Not even that if you play many other sports growing up like Mike suggested with tennis and baseball you already have the "Early" transition down (Opposing forces) working in your favor. This is one of the best videos I've seen talking about momentum or forces while a swing is in motion. ALL of us can master these correct positions in slow motion, its when the body and arms start moving is where its difficult and it works as opposite feels.
Mr. Malaska, I recently started playing again after a 25 year hiatus to due military service and raising kids. I have spent countless hours watching instructional videos trying to improve my game with mostly negative results. I was close to quitting again, but then I found your no nonsense approach to golf instruction. Thank you for "allowing" me to feel like an athlete again and not a robot. I love your candor. I wish I knew you back in the day. Thanks for being awesome.
From 7:12 on, I felt like this vid was speaking directly to me. Took this idea to the range today and found a new game called “Consistent Compression”. Thank you, fellas!
After searching for "right elbow get stuck in the back swing" and got me here, OMG, this is going to change my entire concept of transition. Thank you Mike.
I dare to say, Mr. Malaska might be very unique one of very very few players/teachers that understand the kinetics of golf swing as well as body mechanics. Just PHENOMENAL!
The penny finally dropped. I have struggled with over-the-top, fat, pulls for a long time. I believed that it was mainly caused by my sequencing but could not seem to get things coordinated. I've watched almost every golf video out there and tried everything. The more I tried, the more rigid I got and further away from that effortless swing I've dreamed about. The simple, clear, concise explanation that the transition starts AT THE BEGINNING of the backswing was a true light-bulb moment. Within a few swings my swing path went from 5 to 7 degrees Out to -1 to 2 degrees from the inside. My low point control improved dramatically and I am able to get the same club head speed with much less effort. I know I've seen the baseball, tennis racket, ..... explanation from a lot of instructors but this time, by re-telling the quiz about when golfers think the forward movement starts, versus when it should start it finally sunk in. Now on to putting.
70 years old, at 45 I was a plus 4 - this is the best instruction I have ever seen in explaining, more importantly teaching golf as a sport relating to other sports. Thank you for all you do for the game. Now just get the pros to play faster and the game will grow.
And it works...totally changed my swing feeling. Once you get used to its an effortless swing...if you want. You can also hammer it...but the consistency of clean hits is something I never experienced before. The man is a genius.
I agree. Mike is being to hard on himself when he says he isn't that smart. Einstein said the truest sign of intelligence, is the ability to explain a complex topic in terms every one can understand. In this regard, Mike absolutely is a genius. His insight into the golf swing has not only changed my perception, but also improved my game.
From Portugal Hi Mike, You are undoubtedly the first and the best golf teacher I have ever known who explains everything in a comprehensible way. Thank you very much. You deserve millions of likes.
This was a revelation for me. I’ve been working on being more natural in my movements. But my chronically late transition literally handcuffs my swing into off-balance manipulation rather than swinging. Brilliant video
So many youtube "coaches" talk about flattening the shaft in the downswing. The more I practice the worse my ball striking gets. Your video is about Newton's "Action and Reaction" law. It's "static" vs. "dynamic". It makes so much sense to me. Thank you so much!!!
Terrific. Tail end of this video is the best explanation of feel versus real I've ever seen. Also provides a ton more clarity on the move Mike is sharing in his other videos.
So, I have been taking lessons, watching vids, playing golf since I was a teenager. THIS, this video has helped me strike the ball better than anything. What was said around the 9:00 mark is a game-changer for me! Wow, I took that to the range today and I was hitting all irons, including 4i flush!
Today I played and I felt like the club was coming down vertical. It wasnt at all but that was the feeling i 'did'. Wasnt stuck behind all day and hit the ball 'flush'. Best feeling ever! Thanks so much Mike.
MM is such a great coach, and his explanations of things that are oftentimes overlooked can be invaluable. This idea of getting a 'feel' (even if it 'feels' incorrect) that puts you into a good position is priceless. As Mike says, (and I've had numerous coaches teach this) if you practice getting into the 'correct' positions, because there's no real forces at work you will be ingraining the wrong 'feels' and 'you're dead' because, then you'll be frustrated as all your practice comes to nought. So practicing a 'feel' that gets you into the correct position is critical, because you can then ingrain this 'feel' knowing that is what you need to feel to get it right. A bit of a head-scratcher at first, but right in the end. Great video Mike and Eric.
Can’t wait to go and do this on the range. It is so logical though it has never ever been told to me. Ever... UPDATE: just tried it and it is gold. I didn’t think too much of the motion itself just that its okay to start going into your front leg as soon as the club is taken back. Bend the frontknee a bit for some extra punch and rocksolid contact and it feels so effeortless. Thank you!
for sure - he has kinda a know-it-all talk down to you style, which I find a tad abrasive, but you can not argue with the knowledge and logic. the guy just drops truth bombs that aren't just copies of the same old garbage you see in every swing video
Awesome video! I tried this yesterday and I was able to hit every fairway. I played today and same results. Shot 88 and my average round is 94. Thanks for a lesson that works.
This was an omg moment. Been following Mike now for a few months and how he describes the feeelings in the downswing made some much sense to me. Finally managed to get out and play this week for the first time with the new feelings and wow I have never hit the ball so sweetly and from a more "in to out" swing path rather than "out to in". Keep up the good work Mike
Forces instead of positions, absolutely. When I stopped trying to get a certain position at the top of the backswing and instead feel the force of swinging on plane, and transitioning balance early as described here, I sent the ball with distance I had never seen before in decades of play. I’m 62.
Your explanation and teaching of * feels vs what is happening * is fantastic - I wish I had understood this earlier - but it^s never to late to learn. Thank U so much for this video
Mike, Took me a while to understand your meaning..(.i'm a slow learner) but today i managed to get it, all i can say is BRILLIANT...Well done and thank you Mike.
Obi Wan I love this, it’s like listening to Einstein and Hawkings explain the intricacies of the golf swing so that a grammar school student can understand! Thanks for all the great information!
That's a funny exchange right at the end of the video when you talk about positions. I've had some highly rated instructors in the past. I am/was a good player. This instructor would have me in slow motion hit all of these positions in a swing. There were like 14 positions. We'd be in a lesson, and he'd say "Go to position 8!". I couldn't remember exactly where that was. Anyway, to make a long story just a little bit longer, once I started watching your videos, that allowed me to understand the forces involved. I mentioned to an instructor once "Swinging a club is trying to keep your balance and not falling over. Huge forces in that clubhead at distance from the grip.
Oh my, Old Lion and New Lion, gentlemen, brilliant to watch you guys in action, really got the juices flowing, yeah Mike love your passion and drive. . . Eric keep asking the hard questions, you guys will leave the rest for dead.
I love watching you guys light up when you're describing "feels and reals." I get that same feeling when I'm teaching and a student gets it. The "a-ha moment!"
Awesome lesson! I can easily start my lower body first when it comes to tennis, baseball bat, and throwing a ball, but for the life of me doing it in my golf swing is a struggle. More in that would be great!
vieux golfeur ........... c'est le meilleur mouvement que j'ai jamais vu ......et après essais pour moi ça marche vraiment ...........merci Monsieur !!!!
I subscribe to Mike's online program and have learned from Eric as well. Nevertheless, the concept of taking the club back while starting to transition to the left side is lot more complicated than meets the eye in this video - no matter how well done it was. Transition (and shallowing) remains a complex subject that is hard to teach and grasp IMHO.....and made all the more difficult by trying to apply analogies from baseball, tennis and other sports. It sounds well and good when viewing on UA-cam......then trying to execute "two opposing forces" is a different kettle of fish -- it just is.
Mike, I found your UA-cam station about a month ago and have gone back and watched your videos going back at least a few years. I wished I had seen your instruction years ago. After trying to throw my right elbow at the ball and manipulating my hands, I tried your “move”. I don’t have it right because when I tip the club I pull hook. However, using the chop the wood, pull the arrow out of the quiver, and not be afraid of my managing the face with my right hand, I am hitting the ball significantly farther with a natural draw, enough so that my playing partners have asked what am I doing differently. I tell them go watch your channel. Thanks so much. My contact has improved tremendously with a lot less effort. Hank
An important part of the forward transition is a proper hip turn in the back swing. Mike has a really good video on a back swing hip turn. If can master this turn, the transition is soo much easier.
I implemented the David Duval feel he talked about on the range the past couple of days and...WOW! I went from a flippy stuck inside swing hitting every shot but straight, to hitting piercing irons and bomb drives. I really think I gained 5-10 yards on my irons
Mike, your swing by feel through certain points of the swing is right on. As a hooker starting with your concepts I have had to add making the inside of the right palm move towards the target slightly ahead of the right forefinger near impact, this is for us hookers only. The face does square, but the toe has to be aligned with the heel at impact. The body will self align for the task. The inside of the right foot will be an ankle roll and the palm of the right hand will face the target at the top of the follow through.. These are not forced positions as you say, they are products of physics. Thanks again
Great information Mike and Eric. I feel like you were addressing a predominant hook swing that suddenly gets it too steep. My steep swing is due to my hip moving forward (towards the ball position). I am tall, and I cannot get my hips to stay back. I have tried everything (chair behind me etc). I just can't find that "feeling". Would love to see your take on this in a future video. I will look at a video noted below by Mike Rose
Fantastic Mile. Been struggling for years to gwt out from under the plane. Can hit the spot with no spèed but straight under when gas added. Gotta feel steep to get sweet is my new thought!
If the golf ball was being rolled slowly towards us before we hit it, we would instinctively do the perfect transition. The ball is stationery, thus calling all the wrong emotions and thoughts into play.
This is so true ... I start my back swing and right away my left knee start to ben a little bit so I can put some sort of force so from the end of my backswing I am ready to throw. .... Thx guys
Thanks for the tips Mike . So moving forward at position one in the backswing and then having the feeling of an upright shaft when the lead arm is parallel to the ground ( position two ) in the downswing will result in the club being on plane at impact . Is that your perception ?
I follow Mike quite a bit and his videos/teachings have helped me a lot. The one thing I disagree with on the tennis and baseball comparisons is in both of those sports you do not rotate your shoulders the way you do in golf. So to start forward to early will hinder your shoulder turn... all the pros start that transtion right before the end of their backswing which makes more athletic sense to get the most torque. Out on the range I followed Mikes earlier "forward" move and it almost impossible to get your shoulder turn. Perhaps it is just a "feeling" that Mike has that he starts early.
Can I say the transition if its like tennis sequence. It means that you start by planting the left foot first , followed by right arm hitting the ball? But my coach said, planting the left foot does not guarantee the left hip rise aka clear the left hip and chest high? Kindly advise please. Your video is very comforting for me as a tennis player .
Mike, Really enjoy your videos!! Mr. Hogan did this very same thing as I think was one of his many secrets. When I have tried this I seem to cut my backswing too short. Any suggestions? Thanks
Trying to understand this. If you stand the club up at the beginning of the downswing, because your body is rotating, it will automatically flatten the club out? Alternatively, if you try to flatten the club at the top, your body will have to stall to cause a flip to prevent a push or completely missing the ball totally?
Hi Mike, A question if I may ask. In your lessons you have frequently talked about forces acting on the club during the swing. You mention, I think, about static positions in photos being unhelpful (my interpretation) So how different will a ‘good’ 85 mph drive swing be from say a good 110+ mph swing? Or put it another way if you are just paddling your swing compared to going all out? Be great if you could answer this and it might lead to to me understanding better about what is happening in the swing. Regards and thanks.
Hi Mike, When you strike the golf ball with your irons, is your weight just on the right at impact before transitioning across to the left ? In one of your videos you mention having a feeling of rotating/spinning on your right side.
13:28 "So when I make practice swings..." That's exactly how Justin Rose makes practice swings today!! Justin watches Mike Malaska channel to learn "The Malaska Move!" Guaranteed!
Mike, I am having trouble embracing this concept of the weight moving forward as you begin the take away! Is there any particular thought pattern or drill that I can try that will help perfect that move as it seems to me that if I get my weight shifting forward as I commence the back swing, then as I come down into impact I am sort of stuck because a lot of my forward rotation has already occurred so early in the back swing! Would appreciate your comments when you have time, Peter King, Melbourne, Australia
Hand plane is different than club path. That’s the key take away. Hands and arms feel vs what’s happening to the club head. It took me a while to figure out what coach was saying
I've got the opposite problem with my club steepening in the transition, I tried the early weight shift years ago and hit a brick wall. Perhaps I was doing it wrong so I'll give it another crack.
Good grief, someone who actually listens to Mike and doesn’t feel he has to be constantly interrupting to make HIS presence felt. Well done Eric, great video as always Mike.

More golf gold, Mike and Eric are on a roll at the moment, I always use the analogy of a cowboy using a whip for the downswing feel, Great Video
Thanks Mike, I've tried it and it works and I really enjoyed it.
Sharp insights. Great instruction!
Awesome video & awesome explanations. This makes so much sense to me. Thank you, Mike!!
13:40 So, so true. Its "the" golf secret...peroid. Golf is so easy if you feel this in your swing.
I implemented the David Duval feel he talked about on the range the past couple of days and...WOW!
I went from a flippy stuck inside swing hitting every shot but straight, to hitting piercing irons and bomb drives. I really think I gained 5-10 yards on my irons
Awesome instruction! Helped me a lot! Thx! Mike!!!
This explains why Jack's club is vertical at the top of his1992 back swing (10:30). Thank you from Goodyear.
Brilliant work, all!
When you own your golf swing, like Mike does, you know he's talking sense in his teaching of the swing.
Fantastic Mile. Been struggling for years to gwt out from under the plane. Can hit the spot with no spèed but straight under when gas added. Gotta feel steep to get sweet is my new thought!
This is amazing - real & feel is so different
If the golf ball was being rolled slowly towards us before we hit it, we would instinctively do the perfect transition. The ball is stationery, thus calling all the wrong emotions and thoughts into play.
💯
Love that stuff very feel oriented, will work on that! Great
This is so true ...
Mike,
Really enjoy your videos!! Mr. Hogan did this very same thing as I think was one of his many secrets. When I have tried this I seem to cut my backswing too short. Any suggestions? Thanks
Same With a Bowling Ball also. Arm goes back - body goes forward. By the way - what a beautiful Driving Range...
THE greatest golf coach.
Thanks Mike this is very helpful
This makes great sense for under planers, but so many ams are steep in transition so this type of move would be counter productive.
Trying to understand this. If you stand the club up at the beginning of the downswing, because your body is rotating, it will automatically flatten the club out? Alternatively, if you try to flatten the club at the top, your body will have to stall to cause a flip to prevent a push or completely missing the ball totally?
Good instructions, you guys should do a golf video next!! Thanks.
Mike is an amazing teacher
Hi Mike, A question if I may ask.
In your lessons you have frequently talked about forces acting on the club during the swing.
You mention, I think, about static positions in photos being unhelpful (my interpretation)
So how different will a ‘good’ 85 mph drive swing be from say a good 110+ mph swing?
Or put it another way if you are just paddling your swing compared to going all out?
Be great if you could answer this and it might lead to to me understanding better about what is happening in the swing.
Regards and thanks.
Excellent thanks entertaining to watch Mike from the UK
Love the explanation of the early transition
Would turning control of the club to the trail hand / arm make it easier?
I’m going to start a new app….thank you Mike 😀😀
Hi Mike,
When you strike the golf ball with your irons, is your weight just on the right at impact before transitioning across to the left ?
Great golf teacher.
Such a good explanation
