Mike is a pure genius. His understanding of physics and geometry and how they apply to the golf swing is simply unparalleled. He has a such a genuine way of teaching the science of technique that is straight forward, logical, and easy to understand. Love watching these vids. Keep 'em coming!
Mike, I just started watching your golfing videos and have to tell you that you are amazing. Over the course of 60 years I have been playing golf I never had teaching pros teach me your golfing techniques. You are a scientist and now my teacher. I’m 71 years old and can hit a driver 250 yards consistently! All your lessons are an eye opener and has improved my game tremendously and within 6 weeks taken my game into the low 80’s. Thank you!
I have been coaching (mostly kids) for 15 years. I have always taught to setup to a chip like a putt and then do the Johnny Miller 'brush-brush.' But this video is fantastic in terms of explaining the shoulder relationship and "why" the putting setup normally works ok. . . because they normally stand with shoulders level on putts. I am adjusting my teaching method starting right now. Thanks!!!!
ALL of my chips went left. After Mike’s help they go straighter than they ever did. Surprised my partners last week during a best ball outing. A couple of my chips set us up for Par. Thank you Mike!
As someone who has played scratch golf for 40 years, my chipping went south about 10-15 years ago. Hit like 70, chip like 90. Simplest of chips was a pressure packed situation. I did it the old way. Play it back and hit down on it. As the fairway cuts are so tight now, this quit working. Mike’s chipping videos have changed my golf life.
I’ve gotten lessons from PGA instructors and they have helped a ton but two videos from Mike and my score dropped 17 strokes. I’m a max handicap. I’m about to study these videos like the Bible!
This guy, Malaska has to be the best No bullshit Golf teacher on line . He gives all this content out for free !!! You just taught me some thing that around $4000 in golf lessons on the short game has not !!!
I played on the same golf team in HS with Blackmar. He had the best short game we ever saw. He got it up and down almost every time and his putting was fantastic. The rest of us knew back then he would be playing on the tour someday.
Great stuff, guys. Thanks to your videos on how to play the par 5 (and swings taughts in general) and increasing swing speed (without locking up) I managed bring my HCP down from 14 to 11.2 in just 2 rounds. Keep ‘m coming!
I've been pulling my hair out due to chipping, typically losing anywhere from 10 to 15 strokes per round from duffing and blading chip shots. Everyone harps on about keeping weight on the left hand side and then swinging it straight back and straight through. Sounds dead easy but nothing has helped for years. I may find something that works briefly but never lasts. I knew i was taking the club way inside but could not work out why or stop doing it. This video has been a revelation and has completely changed my chipping. Can't wait to try out on the course. I've been doing the exact thing that Mike talks about. Getting the weight on the left hand side by pushing my pelvis which was dropping my right shoulder without even realising. Now I can manage almost perfect contact every time. Thank you! Now golf will be fun again
I’ve been dropping my right shoulder while getting my weight on my left side…never could figure something out that worked, until hopefully now (need to give it a run in a round yet)…
Mike, this is one of the best golf tips I've ever heard in my 30 plus years of playing golf. I've listened to all of the best coaches and read all of the publications; this tip is "BY FAR" the simplest and easiest way to correct the problems with chipping. Thank you so very much for sharing this "stroke saving" secret with us all.
Going to devote an entire practice session to this technique. I used to do this very thing and was deadly. Somehow, I let some badness get in there and lost it. I have been searching for this! Thank you!
I wish i could send you a Christmas Card. I’m a 4 handicap had the yips so uncontrollably I nearly quit the game. This video was like a miracle cure. Thank you so much.
Hello? My shortcoming was the short game around the green. I learned a lot from watching your video today. Let's practice at the short game court today. thank you
Just had an hour at my club practicing this on a early Saturday evening, always a good time, no one around, over the last few rounds played I've wasted so many shots around the green, i was exactly in the wrong set up, head tilted behind the ball, some chunked, others thinned, amazing difference using this technique, felt a bit odd at first, once i got used to the change strike so crisp, Magical Mike does it again
Thanks Mike, I have gone from a yipper to a great chipper in 2 weeks, and have also improved my bunkers dramatically. I did exactly what you said . I changed my spine and YIPEEEE!! Thanks
I watch this video right before spring every year, short game is thr best part of my game and this video is a big reason why...now if onlt I could stay in play off the tee, sitting around a 6 rn and driver is killing me...but I can always count on my trusty wedges
I have been watching SO MANY chipping methods, using yours and one other like yours that it it works! I used them back in the day just by my own "judgment" figuring it out for myself back then, that I made at least one chip in per round or more just on my own. Now trying THE method by others, no results, now trying the natural method again I'm back on track, cool love it. Thanks. THINK GUYS
Tried setting up what I thought was shoulders level. Looked in mirror and I was still way tilted!’ Eye-opening what more level shoulders felt like. Can’t wait to try this out this weekend.
Very good instruction beyond the usual...however, no mention of shoulders doing the work vs wrists...I used to be too much wrist until I change short chips to a putting stroke. Love the hover the face just above the ground. Playing Medinah 3 tomorrow and I'll put this to test.
This is exactly why my chips are inconsistent, some are OK when in the practice area but on the course and under pressure, poor technique, low trail shoulder and control of low point often spell disaster! I did a video of myself chipping last week and this revealed exactly what Mike describes - weight shift toward target with hip but upper body moving back and putting sternum behind ball. From that position the club will bottom out before the ball almost every time. This video is solid gold for people with chipping problems... Well done!!
This is great info! Martin Chuck teaches letting the weight of the club to comfortably lengthen the arms and not sole the club on the ground on all shots.
Love this Mike, simplicity at its finest and an excellent way to chip. I can see this working for golfers of all levels low and high handicap. Amazing how just a simple set up change can have powerful effects on our chipping. Thanks for sharing!
Tried this yesterday. Game changing! I have so much confidence in my short game now. Only issue now is fresh grooves on my Mizunos and TP5X's stop like a mofo so I have to get used to it.
A huge issue I had that I didn't realize, was I was doing everything right but I was setting my club face on the ground completely.. Lifted it up a tiny bit and it makes all the difference!!
Mike the explanation of your search in to Jack minds thinking, very interesting and I think analytical very correct . I love your analysis of everthing, but your analysis is always driven for feel, good job
I used to do this, and all was good.... and then I got away from it for some reason.... and then struggled with the odd skull or fat, ruining great scoring opportunities, or a great round. Recently came back to it and everything is better again. Holing shots around the green or scaring the hole again. It really is the ticket to consistency around the greens.
Great chipping advice! Sometimes I forget to hover the club a little. Can one assume that the hovering the club head is true for the other clubs as well, increasing hover height as one gets closer to driver? The driver being the longest and fastest club, thereby lengthening the the arms most. Thanks!
A motion of equal importance (not mentioned in vid) is executing the entire move (start to finish) with YOUR SHOULDERS and PAUSE at the 'top' of your backswing for a second before rocking your shoulders in a pendulum motion for the downswing. Also, this entire mini-swing should feel very relaxing. If not, you're rushing your swing.
Thanks for this vedio, I have been have this problem, I also seem to straighten my arms on a full swing, I need to setup with my ball close to the end of my club be it Iron or Wood.
I went exclusively to the “use the bounce” mentality after a clinic and the past videos you have done with Monte. This is very similar and makes accessing the bounce much easier. I set up 50/50 and then think “55/45 and use the bounce” to chipping perfection😄. Great video.
Dead on perfect lesson. My coach made me chip on one leg with my back toe on the ground only. Then he filmed me to show me my shoulders were aligned. Excellent video!
This is a fantastic explanation of how setup controls everything. I love the "measuring out" explanation. I try to tell people that they should take control of the clubhead by hovering instead of "giving it to the ground", but the habit of shoving the clubhead into the ground behind the ball at address dies hard.
I always like Mike's tips. The unconscious "savior" idea perfectly describes the chip yips. I know, cuz I had em... bad! The idea of moving weight to the left is correct and doing so without dropping that right shoulder is also key. The one nit I might pick is the idea that with the right shoulder "down" and shoulders tilted, you are "bottoming out" early. That isn't exactly what is happening. The swing circle remains the swing circle, and the bottom of the swing is directly opposite the 'buttons' on the shirt. The "fats" come from the club returning to the "bottom of the circle" which is still some 2-4 inches in front of the ball AND 3 INCHES BELOW GROUND LEVEL. (It was said that he 'lowered the right shoulder 3 or 4 inches.) The ground 'gets in the way' of the club reaching for the bottom of the circle. This can be demonstrated using a face on camera and standing on the edge of a platform that is 4 to 6 inches high, and then following the clubhead's path relative the platform level. Dropping that right shoulder you see the clubhead passing through ground level at a point nearer to the right toe (behind what would be the ball), and reaching the 'bottom' of the circle well below ground level. With shoulders level and buttons and head slightly in front of the ball, the same camera work shows the clubhead reaching ground level very slightly behind the ball with the bottom of the circle slightly in front (as in front as the buttons on the players shirt might be). But the angle of attack is much more shallow, and any contact with 'ground level' is first bending blades of grass, not turf. Thanks for great work Mike and Brendan!
I have been playing golf for a long time, currently a 4 handicap. Chipping is the worst part of my change as I average 12-14 girs a round. I’ve been to respected instructors and short game experts including D Peltz. Not one of those teachers taught or mentioned this technique. It has changed my game and confidence standing over a chip. It’s a game changer I have never made solid contact on chips like now and it was a simple fix. Thanks Mike you changed my game for the better. Also you named this video correctly I will never chip the same way again!
Mike Malaska is one of the best teachers of golf. Brandon your swing is looking good 👌!!!! This is the best most foolproof chipping method I've ever seen. Thanks Brandon!!!
When chipping around the green, weather it's my 60, 56, 50, 45, pw, 9, 8, 7, I use my putting stroke, even tho I have to take the club back a litter further adjust for distance control for each club
Mike has highlighted the fault that has been ruining my game around the green, wrecking my scores and spoiling my enjoyment of golf. I am going to use this video as inspiration and an aide to practice and get rid of this destructive shoulder tilt nightmare. Many thanks from England.
Would Mike be able to say if you should do the same thing with full iron shots as far as letting the club hover above the ground in order to let the momentum work through the ball?
“The weight of the club will straighten your arms”. If you’re nervous and tight you’ll blade the crap out of it majority of the time. Most people bend their arms at impact to help the ball in the air.
There's a great video on UA-cam with Stan Ultey on the golf channel where Martin hall talks about the ping logo on his chest that was parallel to the ground that helped me immensely.
Malaska for me is by far the best teacher there is. Awesome lesson
Not only was this technically a great lesson, but the first couple of minutes on the mindset was priceless.
Thank You.
Grateful Aussie.
I've been struggling with my chipping for several years. Used your technique today and the improvement was incredible. Thank you so much.
Mike is a pure genius. His understanding of physics and geometry and how they apply to the golf swing is simply unparalleled. He has a such a genuine way of teaching the science of technique that is straight forward, logical, and easy to understand. Love watching these vids. Keep 'em coming!

This is by far one the best simple mechanics explanations on chipping I’ve seen! You talk about each important item and feel!

I used this technique yesterday on the course! It works... thanks from Wales 🏴!

Great stuff, guys. Thanks to your videos on how to play the par 5 (and swings taughts in general) and increasing swing speed (without locking up) I managed bring my HCP down from 14 to 11.2 in just 2 rounds. Keep ‘m coming!
Wow a cure for the worst part of my game for years!!! Happy that you showed me the way to shave multi-shots off my game:)

You and I both! I will go back to this technique and recapture that g-a-t-g...[goodness around the greens].
Same thing happened to me! I just forgot about an excellent technique! Thanks Mike
I'd have rather had Mike go on about the mental approach. That stuff was pure gold Basic chipping fundamentals don't compare in terms of importance .
@Benghali In Platforms You can't chip if you don't think well. Period. I don't care how good your technique is.
@Benghali In Platforms Keep chasing technique as the secret and let us know how it works out for you
that is great, went to practice, my chipping improved 100% never chipped one fat....wow thanks
The best golf tip I ve ever tried changed my short game which was the worst part of my game cant thank you enough!!
I wish i could send you a Christmas Card. I’m a 4 handicap had the yips so uncontrollably I nearly quit the game. This video was like a miracle cure. Thank you so much.
I'm off 5 and have the yips. Cant wait to try this
Me too, got the yips with chips and pitches. Crushing. It’s tough to go from challenging 72 a round to having trouble breaking 90!
Just adding myself to this list. Am off 3 but anything could happen when I miss a green. This could be the answer!
I’m in the same boat. I play off a 5 with the chipping and pitching game of a 25hcp. It’s embarrassing. Can’t wait to try this.
@@joshleech8146 Good luck with it. I'd be interested to hear how you get on.
Mike maybe the best video I have ever seen on chipping technique. Thanks.

Mr. Malaska you are amazing! "THANK YOU" for all of the tips and lessons that you provide. Tip of the cap to you!
finally some real help on chipping thank you Mike!!!!!! you will save me about 3 shots every round.
Thanks Mike, I have gone from a yipper to a great chipper in 2 weeks, and have also improved my bunkers dramatically. I did exactly what you said . I changed my spine and YIPEEEE!! Thanks
Did you change your spine in the bunker as well?

This is a great video. It really helps to see someone learning the technique and working through mistakes. Thanks

Emphasizes using the left shoulder as the pivot point for the chip stroke.
I'm so glad I stumbled on to this video, it's the exact problem I've been having and the cure to solve it, thanks.
Delighted to see you and Mike creating these amazing and insightful videos that help so many people :)

Great explanation on chipping Mike excellent can't wait to leave work and try it. Thank you
Very good Philosophy. It's the one shot I practice most and the one I mostly screw-up on the course. Thanks.

Awesome tip - just proves that the setup is the key when it comes to chipping!
Mike is the best ever coach for me
I used to do this, and all was good.... and then I got away from it for some reason.... and then struggled with the odd skull or fat, ruining great scoring opportunities, or a great round. Damn! I wish I had seen then when I 1st started Golf. This is perfect for people with chipping yips / chunking their chips.

Always loved Mike, wish he were on the Golf Channel again.
Thanks for this vedio, I have been have this problem, I also seem to straighten my arms on a full swing, I need to setup with my ball close to the end of my club be it Iron or Wood.
Great drill, absolutely perfect ball contact! Thank you very much guys!
This guy is such a good teacher

Is this stack n tilt concept? Probably only for chipping but not for pitching and full-swing, correct? Thanks!
Dead on perfect lesson. My coach made me chip on one leg with my back toe on the ground only. Then he filmed me to show me my shoulders were aligned.
Excellent video!
Never heard that about the weight of the club straightening out the arms. Very helpful.
This is gold! I will be using these setup tips. Thanks for sharing!
man what a cool life lesson in golf! where was this 20 years ago
This is a fantastic explanation of how setup controls everything. I love the "measuring out" explanation. I try to tell people that they should take control of the clubhead by hovering instead of "giving it to the ground", but the habit of shoving the clubhead into the ground behind the ball at address dies hard.

Very interesting, that helped so much ! Cheers
“It became evident that Jack Nicklaus had a different perception of what was going on than I did! “ Such a good observation!
Mike Malaska is one of the best teachers of golf. Brandon your swing is looking good 👌!!!!
This is the best most foolproof chipping method I've ever seen. Thanks Brandon!!!
Enjoyed this. Subscribed to your channel. thanks.
Should you set up the same way with regular iron shots? Resting the club just in top of the grass?
Wow! Exemplary! Thanks for putting this up!
Im gonna try this technique now. That 3rd shot (a good chip normally) is what I need so I can one putt.
When chipping around the green, weather it's my 60, 56, 50, 45, pw, 9, 8, 7, I use my putting stroke, even tho I have to take the club back a litter further adjust for distance control for each club
You have a 45 and a PW. What loft it your PW?
Great lesson. ThankYou!
This mike Malaska is such a great coach. 👍
Because when he teachs something he makes sure you understand it, too not "just do this " !!
This is exactly what Padraig Harrington is advocating on his youtube video.
Mike has highlighted the fault that has been ruining my game around the green, wrecking my scores and spoiling my enjoyment of golf. I am going to use this video as inspiration and an aide to practice and get rid of this destructive shoulder tilt nightmare. Many thanks from England.
Awesome tips! Thanks so much. 👍
Really great tip! Would you say the hovering of the club would be true for all of our clubs, maybe not putter?
Fantastic video! This works like a charm.
amazing coaching...thanks guys
Thx for watching
I have the bad yipes. I’m going to try this setup. It sounds so easy lol Thank you so much
Awesome! I love this old series. Someone should do it again ... Shell, Golf Channel, Netflix, a cable network, etc. ... someone!
Thank you. Club championship tomorrow. I think you saved me👍
great video, great tips, lov them, thanks a lot
What a clever coach
How can anyone give this video a thumbs down?
Trolls. They're everywhere. Try to find a UA-cam video without a thumbs down.
Would Mike be able to say if you should do the same thing with full iron shots as far as letting the club hover above the ground in order to let the momentum work through the ball?
Wow, that’s exactly what I do, right shoulder down and hitting the ground before the ball
Great video like always Mike!! Shoulder feel more level really helps. Question here please, should we feel wedge shaft more vertical ? Thanks again.
This is magic Mike is in two places at once. With Brandon and back at the golf cart.
My weakest part of the game is about to be changed with this insight. Thanks for sharing!
Thx!
REALLY great video... great tips.
Mike just keeps helping my game.
I lov these two hacks.. Coach makes a lot of sense!
Do you measure-up full swing shots like this too?
“The weight of the club will straighten your arms”. If you’re nervous and tight you’ll blade the crap out of it majority of the time. Most people bend their arms at impact to help the ball in the air.
There's a great video on UA-cam with Stan Ultey on the golf channel where Martin hall talks about the ping logo on his chest that was parallel to the ground that helped me immensely.
Chipping away at it gotta find that
