This is the one that actually transformed my golf swing, just as it said on the tin. Guys, take this comment with a pinch of salt. I watched other videos around the same time with similar perspectives on this principle, and I was at the right place in my game where I was ready to receive this. But this video was my ‘click’ moment on the range. Golf friends, take this, work it out, and don’t be afraid to increase your swing speed what feels like 2x or 3x… keep your sternum on the low point and just rip it. Wow. It makes all the difference when you feel like you are already going to get good contact, almost locked in. Then you can take your swing to bigger places. More speed, more width back and through. This has changed my golf.❤❤
Excellent Ryan, I have now been approximately 50 years on 5 handicap and IMVHO, this is one the great lessons of the thousands that people can get lost in on UA-cam. You deal really well with the counter-intuitive, almost contradictory notion of (Not) trying to hang on to lag (we have all been down this road), while actually hanging on to the right 'wrist-set' and marrying this with rotation of arms and body...well I don't think you don't mention the body rotation, but you clearly demonstrate it over and over again throughout the video. I'm not sure how many 20 handicappers will fully get their heads around this, or realise just good the advice is and how much time it would save them if they just followed this advice, but i think lower handicap players who have already done the '10,000 hours' will immediately see how important this is. If I wasn't in Kenya, I would definitley be booking a lesson! Again, excellent, thanks
This is the "New Standard" for instructional golf videos; Plain, understandable english, crisp speach, skillful video with concise demonstrations. Well done. Thank you.
I have to congratulate Chris for his motivation and enthusiasm for his explanation to play better golf, especially for pensioners. Best teacher so far.
Wow Chris!! This video is the easiest to follow for wrist interaction. I have struggled with this my whole 20year golf life. I can't wait to try this out at the range.
Blimey, your last drill is difficult to achieve at full swing speed. Finally getting the hang of it and my ball flight and trajectory is so much improved. Great video, thank you.
This is video helped me so much you don’t understand. Been struggling for weeks with my irons. Was looking for someone to break it down in this way and following your steps helped me tremendously!
Another masterpiece Chris. For the first time I realize how soft and relax the right hand grip has to be in order to achieve the full upcocking of the wrist and form the 90 degrees between club and forearm. For the first time I am able to get the butt end pointing at the ball target line and this is a HUGE game changer for me. Once the clubhead is up the other 2 moves are so much easier to achieve . Thank you again 🙏🙏🙏
Chris thank you, I have worked in China for the last 7 years and as such have found it impossible to find a coach. I have followed your tuition on youtube and today was the light bulb moment. I have struggled to understand the release, Switching from each hand as the dominant one. today's video has just explained it perfectly and I've been striking the ball so beautifully. I can't thank you enough. cheers China Mike.
So simple yet so helpful descriptions thank you! The 'easy swing' so many players mention is the key now has some context with the alignment tool drill. Thanks for sharing
The last video of yours l watched was how the right hand behaves in the swing and that was awesome this one is another one because l experienced how good it is when l accidentally swing effortlessly and smoke the ball like butter but l don't know l the hell l did it but now l know and thank you. I think my second instructor got me into an abbreviated version of this. I did not feel comfortable but the distance was great for a short swing. That was years ago - I should have went back. Now I see how I can improve. Thank you for the excellent description Chris. You really filled in the missing pieces. I am heavier now so I'll need more quality rehearsals.
Thank you . Dont have time to practice before my weekend golf play. This video at my office was the only mental practice I needed... Played 9. Thank you I watch all you videos
After months of struggling I finally walked off the course after 6 holes last week. contemplated quitting as I had totally lost perspective on what I was doing with the golf swing. Going to absolutely drill this and hope for an improvement. Thanks for the video.
We have all been there mate......and will be again. Don't pack it in.........enjoy the good days and forget the bad.....and keep learning and practising. Best wishes from Scotland
Hey buddy, I would recommend checking out watchin Adam porzack. Dude changed my golf game. I shoot around 86 now days . Thx to him i am such a strong iron player, however not so much of a putter / driver guy. If you are at the end I really recommend him 100% guarantee it will help you
Happens to us all my brother. I'm a old d1 golfer that played for Clemson University in the early 2000s and was in a bad accident. Well I found my way back to golf again and let's just say it was beyond frustrating coming back knowing how I used to play. It's definitely a battle but I believe you got this.
Great lesson, ... can't wait to test your teaching. I am struggling with that right arm since my beginning. Its misuse caused my body drop to the right, and as a consequence shooting high balls, at least I think so. No coach has been able to spot and correct this.
"Balance a pizza box on your palm at the top of the backswing" Elbow between hip and navel approaching impact. Left shoulder up to the sky for impact and follow through.
Chris, I’ve been playing for 60 years. I was a fairly successful flipper of the club. However your video successfully gave me the feel of the club head. I can’t thank you enough. I’m a 6 handicap but I hope to be scratch by year’s end( putting permitting)
I just watched Pete Cowen give a lesson to an instructor & this is exactly what he was stressing but also included rotating the forearm while holding the wrist angle back to cover the ball which seems would take perfect timing an not be easily repeatable other than for advanced players. What are your feelings about this? I guess it's basically throwing the trail arm? He said this is why Hogan said he'd like to have 3 right arms.
I watched that video and was confused by the advice “ spin the right arm”. I assumed this meant a rotation of the forearm. However later on in the video I felt he was against forearm rotation. I have yet to see a PC instruction video that was absolutely clear. I always get the feeling it’s delivered in a cryptic manner.and the student is afraid to question the teacher. From his track record however PC gets results others don’t so why would he give it all away for free. 😀
Peter also said that "99℅ of golfers on tour were manipulating the clubface", (not holding the angle( which means the alternative to his Hogan theory is pretty successful.
Nice visuals that align directly with what I’ve worked in with my coach the last two lessons. Once he reminded me that my athletic history is right handed and worked on getting my right hand more involved my ball striking has been better than ever.
So, Chris, Do you consciously think of cocking your wrists at a certain point in your back swing? Or is it a natural movement that occurs if the grip on the club is correct and not too tight?
Thank you. This is very clear to understand. With this blueprint, I will use it to work on the "inside out" swing, and the "shallow path" that should happen naturally, and not forced. Thank you, thank you !
Great video!!! Do you adjust the last drill for different clubs to account for the different shaft lengths? For example, it would seem that a driver would hit the stick on the way to the ball.
I thought this was the best explanation of what the trail arm/hands are doing in a proper golf swing. The last "step", rotating the arms, you mentioned very briefly the arm rotation is from the shoulder...but that was it...nothing more. Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't the body rotation during the downswing effectively rotate the trail arm which needs to be coordinated with the actual rotation of the arm unit? How does one coordinate the degree of the body rotation and the arm rotation to match the correct swing direction? In the last rod drill you showed, there seems to be a lot of distance to over or under rotate either the body and/or the arm. True? Is it then a matter of timing the rotation by feel/instinct/athleticism?
New to golf and this video made a lot of things ‘click’. Looking forward to adding some of this to my drills/practice. Main question from a newbie though: how should this be altered for drivers and woods?
Great video as always but I have to disagree with one thing you said at 5:00, "You've got to control the clubface." The golf club is a marvel of engineering which is why is hasn't changed it's basic design in 400 years - because it works. Every golf club, when swung properly, is self correcting and will close naturally through impact if allowed. Any attempt to "control" that will disrupt it and most likely either prevent it from happening completely or at the proper time. There's just no way to "control" the clubface when the club is moving at 80 to 100 mph. Sorry, but this idea of "controlling" the clubface is why so many people struggle with golf. They think the golf club is a mindless stick with a lump of metal on the end that they have to manipulate in order to make the ball go where they want. In reality the golf club is genius in it's engineering so much so that it's invisible to the average user. This is why a child can pick up a club and use it perfectly within 30 minutes, yet adults struggle for years and never get it right.
Hey, appreciate your comments but we will have to disagree on this one then. The club face in my opinion is not self correcting and I do believe you have to learn to control it. There are some great studies out there from the likes of Jacob’s 3D and other experts who can measure just what ‘work’ the golfer has to do to the golf club, and it’s significant. It shows just what you the golfer have to do in order to move the club, it’s 100% down to the golfer and those studies also show what the club would do without the intervention of the golfer, and it would not return anywhere near square, but great discussion point
@@ChrisRyanGolfThat's interesting. I'm going to look into that. Do you have any links you could share? BTW, have you heard of the Rake effect? That's the force that closes the clubface. I proved this is true by making a club where the clubhead is free to swivel on the shaft and I can still hit balls with it.
@@HolyGrailOfGolf . I made a crude version of club you demonstrated and could not believe the way the clubhead acted given it was not being directly influenced by any outside action. You should do another video on that.
@@ChrisRyanGolf Hey Chris I tend to agree with you there are things golfers do to better control the club face which are the kind of things great coaches like you & Pete Cowen teach us amateurs, things like getting our body to make the right movement (body rotation, hinging the wrists, having the right grip etc ). This then allows you to let the golf club swing. You proved this in your Speed Boat drill / Exit Left videos.
Fantastic videos by Chris showing how good a coach he is and also that most people can play better golf if they are shown the correct techniques. Golf is a difficult game as we all know, so you have to follow certain rules to play better and be more consistent. I was amazed just how far I could hit a 4 iron bladed club, half swing with the correct downswing and wrist action making sure the club is swung in to out. The club hitting the bag on the downswing is a great drill on his other videos gives great feel and with this video on correct hand wrist position. Well done to Chris. 👍

Hello Chris, now I am really confused. 10 days ago the exercise was no wrist (umbrella drill); today it is wrist movement all over the place What is correct?
Hey Frank, appreciate that the message may seem confused, this video was detailing how the right arm and wrist should move in the golf swing, the various movements that it has and what they do in the golf swing. The previous umbrella drill was a fix for a golfer who gets the right arm too deep in the backswing with the right elbow moving too far behind the body, if you suffer from that fault then that is a great drill, but only if you struggle with that move. In that umbrella drill the movements in this video were still present, just a little less wrist set, but that was a drill and often a drill is to create the opposite move, or to create an extreme movement in order to change a poor movement. Hope that makes sense, essentially this video applies to everyone, the previous video would only really apply if you suffer from that exact fault. chris
Fantastic video, Chris. One of your best. Added distance to each of my clubs! One question: when I hold that trail wrist angle and then release it as you said, I find myself flipping my wrist “under,” such that my palm almost faces up after release. Any tips for turning that wrist over?
I think if most amateurs could get a feel for float time, they would realize the have time to manipulate the club head at the top of the swing instead of everything being rushed
An easy assumption to make Rod, however I’m pretty sure Danny’s video was released on the Saturday and mine on the Sunday, weekends for me are family days, no work so whilst there is no shame is creating similar content based off others, that’s not the case here, my videos are filmed around a month ahead of schedule so I had no idea Danny was releasing that video
Danny Maude is renowned for copying everybody elses content, watch Zen golf release a video and 2 days later DM is releasing the same, even uses the same language (including the intentional errors they put in)
Chris broke out the three things separately. In the actual swing they are hard to observe because the backswing is over in the blink of an eye. But for completeness as per the Chris video they are : 1. Hinge your wrist up vertically (cock your trail wrist) 2. Set your trail wrist (knuckles back to forearm feeling) and finally rotate and fold your trail arm, which gets you onto the correct backswing place (circa 45 degrees with the club dissecting your spine at roughly 90 degrees.

If the drill is difficult for you, it only confirms you really need it!
The more difficult - the more important to stick with it.
I always try to have the mind set with the right wrist on the backswing as if you are a waiter holding a try of food. It helps me anyway.
I am a lefty playing right-handed, this got me worried hehe 🙂 I struggle to feel what my right hand is doing. No feel for what it does...
Is this for all clubs? Also you should say trail arm instead of right arm..some of us are lefties:)
I think if most amateurs could get a feel for float time, they would realize the have time to manipulate the club head at the top of the swing instead of everything being rushed
Ever since Pete Cowen showed Danny Maude the importance of the right arm, every other youtuber has been coping the lesson.
Danny is solid, as is Chris! Enjoy both
Danny Maude is renowned for copying everybody elses content, watch Zen golf release a video and 2 days later DM is releasing the same, even uses the same language (including the intentional errors they put in)
Cracking video, tks
Why the skull and cross bone logo??
So three things to do to the right wrist? Not seeing them in your backswing?
Not too sure what you mean, are you saying that I don’t demonstrate these moves?
@@ChrisRyanGolf Meant it’s just a little hard to see all these moves…
@@dry509 yeah agreed, pretty much why I made the vid, hard to see all the movements in a full swing
The use of lead & trail instead of right & left is super helpful for us lefties trying to improve.

Complicated. It can't be that difficult.
