  • Earlier this spring I spent the afternoon with Eric Cogorno ( / ericcogornogolf ) at Superstition Mountain. We covered a series of topics. This conversation about hip movement in the full swing is one of the most important concepts I think every golfer must understand.
You can see more great videos from this series with Eric on his channel as well.
Learn step by step online with Mike at malaskagolf.com. Follow The M-System to develop the skills you need to become a complete player.
Don't just play golf. Understand it.

When you golf at a high level, you become a new type of human being.
I'd have to say golf is the best game for anyone looking to learn about life.
Can you do it? Most can't. I can. I bust my ass off researching, hitting thousands of balls. I will always have callous on my fingers because of that and guitar.
I can't remember the last time I got angry at someone. I literally have a positive perspective about anything I do, regardless of the first perspective.

I have to agree with Andrew and a lot of the comments that this thought that leads to the action of pulling your left hip back and out of the way is golf gold. When I practice this with a half swing, I am getting almost the same distance as my old full swing. Thank you so much for this video Mike and Eric!

Remarkable video. Mike's explanation of how we don't really see a golf swing struck a memory gong in my brain: 1973. The great Sam Snead is warming up for thirty minutes right in front of me on the practice tee of the US Open at Oakmont. And the thing that strikes me is how definitive each segment of his swing is. I had never seen this before nor since. A series of inner moves that makes the whole thing work. He repeats the same slow guided action on each and every swing, the same measured timing on each and every move. It is just not something you can really see in old videos. But today, Mike shows us how to make one such move in such an eloquent, beautiful way that I'm already on my condo deck training my left leg how to turn the left hip back. Like Eric said, it makes six other things work better. So grateful to Eric and Mike for your wisdom and generosity. Deepest appreciation.

I cant thank you enough for sharing your knowledge and experience in this game that unfold the mystery of the relationship between our mind and body. You have no idea how much better I am as a player now after watching your videos though I been playing for more than 20 years. You are the only teacher of this game on you tube that teaches with true HONESTY to make people enjoy this game the way they should i.e play the game and not the swing. What you share in this video here works like magic its incredible. I pray to have the means so I can look at you in the eyes and say Thank You Mr. Malaska.....

Hi Mike, have watched your vidioes for about a year now, after not playing for 16 years, I'm now 64.
I have been a professional swim squad coach for a couple of decades here in Australia.
I ve met coaches in swimming and golf, that teach everthing postionally, I can't go with that, the action s of both sports are fluid and all drills should be fluid to create correct positions in the movement, not positions, to create motion, join the dots so to speak, it doesn't, and can't work .
    Absolutely love your work, mike😊

Ive been struggling with early extension and getting stuck under the plane because my right hip fires forward - the only way I could feel a "turn". I have been hitting right blocks and snap hooks for years. My timing had to be perfect to play well. I took your feel to the range today and it instantly changed everything. Better contact and compression and hitting a baby fade - something ive never been able to do. I videoed myself and no more early extension! Juat gone! I also hit 3 large buckets of balls, which I never do because my lower back starts hurting after one. I had zero pain! This was the single best lesson ive ever seen. You have permanently changed the way i think about turning. THANK YOU!!

14:27 to 15:19 is pure gold.
I just did that 👆. Today Aug25th finally had eureka moment of lower body!! As soon as take away occurs, I'm moving force to the left leg like a pedal gas. When I'm almost completing back swing (with my right hip out of the way) I hit the gas pedal 👉push back (feel my left hip out of the way ) and my arms and hands goes down and club head out.
Eureka! Finally felt combining lower body and upper body for the very first time!
Hitting effortlessly Pw 150yrd bombs, 45°flying high balls with that punch👊 like the pro's. So happy🥳🥳🥳.
Many thanks Mr. Malaska for teaching me through all the videos. Victor from Brazil 🇧🇷 🙌

Mike, as a Certified Natural Movement Coach I would say this video is right on. What you call “straight line forces” is actually referred to as the Sagittal plane which is where 90% of human movement happens and that’s why pushing the hips back works so well. It’s how we’re programmed to move. When I coach I know that almost all injuries happen when force is applied in the Frontal (horizontal) and Transverse planes which is where almost all modern golf instruction is working from these days. Great video which will help improve your viewership (it certainly helped me) and reduce potential injury.

The Golf Swing is Invisible, that is the most accurate statement I've heard about Golf!... The terms; fire the hips or rotating the hips has never resonated with me... I like the feel of pushing back from ground up on my lead hip, feels more natural than anything I've ever tried. I also like the fact that snapping the towel with this move is where I can pick up controlled speed. If I try to pick up speed with my hands, arms or shoulders it throws off my timing and swing sequencing... Since I am a car guy, I think of the hip push as when the Turbocharger kicks in at the correct RPM... Thanks for posting, and I wish there were more not very smart, smart people teaching Gold... I like to think of your lessons as "swing smarter not harder..."

Perfect timing for me, been practicing standing the club up, but now have the occasional shank. Now i know why, thanks Mike

So I’ve watched these segments before but never really bought into it. Yesterday I decided to commit one whole range session to this left hip pushing back as the club goes into and through impact - wedges through to driver. Boy does this help with early extension! Just remember that the longer and heavier the club, the more force is pushed away from your hands as it goes through the impact zone. You will need to apply a counter force - as Mike suggested through your lead leg to hip socket - to maintain stability or stable base (lower body). This is a whole new feeling than simply ‘rotating’. I can really feel the force the moving club exerts especially driver. The results were fades all day for me. On video I was able to get that left hip back on the line and ‘rotating’ out of the way for my arms to get through. I’m a chronic lower back pain guy and the HUGE bonus is that it’s not sore as I expected (and used to). Trust me as I was waiting for it...even this morning as I’m typing this long winded message. Sorry but I just wanted to thank you for sharing your concepts to the golfing world. Props to ya Mike!

Explained is such a way that it is easy to understand what your hips do in the swing. Just signed up to malaskgolf, cant wait to get back out and put the feelings in to practise. Keep up the great work.
