    Mike’s insights on the differences between the range and the course are profound. It requires a total mastery of the understanding of how a person plays, golf both physically and mentally. It perfectly explains the reasons why so many of us go to the course with inflated egos because we’ve had a few good balls at the range.

    Mike has a golf web site. It is excellent. I am a member, the content is exceptional. Also I took a lesson from Mike there at This course. He is an Outstanding teacher, that communicates so eloquently, and whom I consider one of the best teachers. I shot a 71 which is one under at our course (had a double bogey-could have been really good).

    I love the style of this video, Brenden you talk like you are having a lesson, ask questions like 'it's good on the range and in drills, why can't i do it on the course and the instructor talks about the sub conscious, which is so important. I actually jumped up and wanted to go to the range straight away. nice work

    your best video to date Brendan , and iv'e been with you when you had hundreds of subs , not 25k. IN my humble opinion, the secret to learning ANY movement pattern, is to give your brain ONE task, not break it down to specific segments and try to join them up. Mike is the best communicator of a golf swing there is, IMO

    When I heard from the start that “most of the time it’s your grip”. ... I strongly agree with that because since I changed my grip and focused on consistency of holding the club with “my new grip” which is turning my left hand more over to show my first 2 knuckles, I realized my face was more squared at impact and I was hitting my targets way more than I ever did. Thank you guys for the great video.

    I played College golf and was a decent player. Fast forward 25 years and my game was very inconsistent and lower back was always sore. I even gave up golf for over a year. I found out about Malaska Golf while scrolling for another youtube golf instructor that a friend told me to look up. The game is simple again and I am really enjoying being able to practice and play with out needing a week to recoup. I have found the care free distance I had in my 20s, 300 plus off the tee, and have consistently been shooting par or under.
    Thanks Mike!

    I’ve struggled with coming over the top for years but I’ve been able to reproduce a manageable fade and score with it... After practicing this drill for a few weeks on the range and using the drill’s feel in my pre-shot routine, I’m now striping it. I’ve tried many things that temporarily helped but using this drill has fixed my issue; the camera doesn’t lie... Thanks, Mike.

    I saw this video when it first came out and I still do the ball throwing drill.
    Been with Brendan since the beginning and thanks to him I’ve painfully overhauled my PGA approved swing to the Mike Austin swing. Tony Luczak, Monte Schienblum, and Mike Malaska’s pearls of wisdom helped me create a swing for the remainder of my life.
    At 60, I suddenly noticed a drop in distance (210 carry, down from 240 persimmon, 260 titanium.) I found Mike Austin through BBG and have been working on it for near 5 years.
    At 67 today, my drives are up to 250 and Austin’s swing is the most physically friendly swing I’ve ever tried. And I tried them (pretty much) all.
    A 5 handicap (never lower) in my 20’s, 7 in my 50’s and now closing in on 70 maintaining a 7 but seriously trending down due to my finally (hopefully) ingrained Austin swing. I’m sure I could have achieved my dream of scratch if I went to see Mike in LA during my college years.
    Long(er) story short; thanks to you Brendan, golf is so much fun again (but for the 2-3 years shooting 90+ while undergoing the similar looking but drastically different swing change.)
    So I don’t know why this appeared on my feed but during my agonizing overhaul, I rediscovered one thing that so many instructors on YT glance over.
    That is, the most important component that Hogan stressed, the grip.
    I’m not going into details but from address to top to impact to finish it should not move at all. Flail it around, pound imaginary stakes into the ground; it should not move at all. Not at all. If it squirms around and doesn’t return to square at address, the grip is wrong and needs to be corrected.
    I’m sure most people (including pros) notice some fudging somewhere during the swing. Sam Snead cautioned us; he had no calluses either.
    Hogan could take ten or more full driver shots without readjusting. (He had calluses.)
    I’ve never heard anyone say to fling the club around to check the grip.

    That drill with throwing the ball while holding a club IS IT....that's exactly what I've been looking for. I have been playing ok this year, but lately I've hit the wall - feeling burned out. I want to go back to basics and fix my problems once and for all - the basic motion. I think this is it, finally.

    I just tried the technique of throwing the ball at the ground then hitting some golf balls. I immediately increased my driver swing speed by about 5 mph without feeling like I was swinging harder. I'm hitting into a net in my back yard so I can't determine the direction the ball was going exactly, but I am encouraged by this "throwing" motion. We'll find out tomorrow on the course!
    UPDATE: This worked on the course! I am a 13 handicap but I shot an 81 today and that was with 2 double bogeys on both front 9 par 3s! As long as I do it right it works well. I still got my hips out to fast and pulled a couple of shots but I didn't have one slice off the tee box. Thanks so much for this tip!

    Nice video & I subscribed. The reason is as a young pro I discovered this left arm out holding a club & swinging under arm like the video. This was around 1972...when I Qualified. I made it my theme for young golfers at that time..I practiced it myself for yrs & made it to the European Tour. People with stiff / inflexible upper body find it very difficult to get close so swing more around the ball ...& that’s what they have to contend with

  • @GRIFF22
    @GRIFF22 2 роки тому +3

    He's absolutely right about face control. If you look at Shauffle and Morikawa, they almost hood the face in the takeaway and have it closed. From there they can rotate rather than flip, which is McIlroy's problem at the moment. Simply though the backswing is an upper body movement and the downswing is a predominantly a lower body movement. If you fixate on that concept then the rotation of the body will shallow and allow to to attack from the inside of the ball.

  • @rpdivots3016
    @rpdivots3016 6 років тому +1

    Yes, Yes, Yes!
    A Strong(er) Grip will fix many a golf swing. The grip is so often left out of the fix anymore and many do not know how the old Pro's fixed the grip first when IT was the problem> Most all anymore think their grip or any "good" grip will should work just fine.
    So many will not take this advice of strengthing their grip and working with the changes to begin with and this vid is one of the best ever for OTT. Needs to go Viral as this will "fix" many more problems once it is accepted and worked with.
    Malaska has nailed it where the rest flounder.

  • @chrisfrazer7755
    @chrisfrazer7755 6 років тому +7

    Rotating your right/trail shoulder down and under your chin in the downswing is the key for me. The drill to toss a ball under your lead arm propped on your driver is a good feel for it. I come over the top when my right shoulder rotates out towards the ball. My main swing thought is now "Right shoulder down & through". When you do it right, it is magical!

  • @michaelkamyszek7229

    This throwing the ball at the point of impact drill saved my swing and perhaps my sanity. This is a drill that provided immediate help by having my right arm lead the way through the ball ( at least for me) rather than my whole body turning. Helped me work my way out of a 2 month slump. I've worked it into my regular pre shot routine without using a ball. It hasn't cured everything but at the very least has me making solid contact again.

  • @steveperry1344

    i do that drill where i put a stick a bit inside the target line and try to swing down that line w/o spinning the body left and that helps. on the course i try to visualize the same thing. i think the ott move is almost instinctive so sometime i just go with it and line up open and adjust the face so i don't hit big pulls but hit nice fading shots. seems to help. love your videos as always

    That one drill got me to sign up for Malaska golf. For the first time I was making compressed contact and hitting 10-15 yards longer with a 3/4 swing. Actually I'm not sure how far I went back on the back swing, all I felt was the movement of throwing the club like a ball, I have no idea what took place other than that short move.

    his comment about the subconscious was just so spot on...in order to get the swing consistent, you have to have trust , subconscious trust, in your swing...or you will default to the safe way...this was just such a great commentary, I hope people can understand what he meant. I used to try and alter my grip to control the face, but on the downswing, my brain would subconsciously revert to the natural grip and for years I did not understand that I needed to relax my grip and let my body and gravity handle it...I think golf is just about letting go and trusting in physics.

    Reminds me a bit of a Preshot routine Corey Pavin used to do. I’m looking forward to giving that drill/thought a try.

    I tried this drill a couple years ago and was smashing it at the range, but then lost it next game I played and never quite got it back watching it again tonight I picked up on what I was missing and practice it on my striking mat, hit the ball position mark spot on. I have been struggling to get consistent contact recently, so I'm looking forward to giving this another go.

    Very enlightening the discussion about the subconscious and I believe it's totally true. What I've found to be shockingly effective for me is to do hundreds of practice swings without a ball at home with a feel or certain goal in mind. It removes the distraction of the ball and ball flight and lets you focus on your intent and goals. Proven effective once back on the range and course. I think I may be making my subconscious a "believer" with this practice.

    I'm not a teacher but I am about a 40 year slicer of the golf ball. I believe the reason I go over the top is because when I get to the top I know where the target is - it's over my front shoulder. I feel I need to get back on line toward the target as soon as I start my downswing - consequently an over the top move. So it sounds like throwing the ball down toward the clubhead would work since you're taking the golfer's idea of target to a different (inside out) place .

    Like everything else you want to get good at it is practice , practice and more practice until it becomes the norm for your body , which develops a muscle memory of it's own for that task. When I cannot quite remember a tune on the guitar which I have not played for a while , my fingers will eventually take over and find it without me thinking about it. The thing that amazes me is that I have found it more dificult to get good at golf than at playing the guitar, despite being good at other sports.

    I have always had problems with face control and moving to my left side. I did the drill for 19 minutes, went to my golf course and hit the hell out of the ball. Try it you will like it.

    nice video brendon and mike. i think my over the top move comes from pulling too hard and too early with the big muscles in the back like the lats etc. and that opens the shoulders too soon and the path across the ball. what do you think? it's a tuff game, eh?

    This so good: "the industry has been teaching people how to walk when they already know how to walk" : Classic Mike.
    My golf swing devolved into a joining of the dots, now I have a golf swing with; swing and feel; especially chipping.
    Love your work Mike, thanks Brendan.

    Great video. I find I avoid over the top by talking through the swing - thumbs up [slow]......swing under [accelerating] - talking also helps relaxing. Took it from watching Ron del Barrio - fabulous swing.

    The subconscious mind is crazy thing, at first I was doing exactly as you said I was over the top hitting a weak glancing slice. Then I learned to square the club face and started hitting it solid but to the right of my target 10 to 15 yards. Since it was a consistent solid strike, I said to myself, I could live with it. However, I was missing a lot of greens. I was usually pin high or within a few feet one way or another, my short game was good enough to par out. That said, I figured I'd score better if I corrected these shots. Now here's the twist, I questioned my alignment, it was good and even tried to compensate; aimed to the left, opened the club face etc... My subconscious mind did not like these adjustments and I'd either block it to the left, shank it, hit it fat or thin. In my mind, it was like trying to teach a right handed dead pull power hitter to hit to right field... I had to re-train my subconscious mind to swing from inside to out. I could do it on the driving range but when I took it to the course, the default under pressure was back to the right... I've made the throw the ball to the ground move (without the ball) part of my pre-shot routine. Much better scoring and fewer shots to the right... Thanks... OBTW: I stopped thinking about my lower body, it does what it needs to do naturally my only thought concerning lower body is just swing within myself and lower body stays in sequence... One less thing to think about...
