This took much longer to put together than I had anticipated lol, but I'm happy with the things I learned along the way.
    Kakarot's notes:
    - For the people who watched the QotW video on how many Project V machines were on Side 7 when it was attacked, I made a mistake with the rollout colorscheme of unit 2. The information in this video is correct.
    - Calling the 700mm Bazooka 1/3 the size of the RX-78-2 was a brainfart, but in context, it still remains ridiculously oversized. (The Zaku's standard bazooka that's roughly the same size is 280mm, the "Giant" Bazooka is 360mm and the Guncannons Shoulder Cannons are 240mm)

You know seeing the intended set up for the white base makes me wonder... 'What if all 9 suits (3 Gundams, 3 Guncannons, 3 Guntanks) were more-or-less operational' like, would all 9 units have gotten pilots? Who knows. Maybe Amuro falls into the Gundam's cockpit early enough to defend all the other suits, while the original crew still gets murderized.

I'd like a What If scenario on this. Ryu and Kai would be using Gundams too. Hayato, Artesia, and Job John would be using Guncannons in space, switching to Guntanks on the ground when needed. Even Bright and Frau might get some screen time in them when needing extra pilots.
With 3 Gundam contributing to future combat data, the GMs might be slightly better in this universe.
And then Zeon would require 3 times the manpower and resources to keep the White Base occupied, which could drain their resources and frontline aces faster.

The one actual circumstance I can think of for using the hammer would be in a colony, with GMs, and pilots not good enough to close to beam saber range.
Smashing a colony wall with a big ball of metal still probably does less damage than an errant bazooka round, and definitely less than stray beam shots.

Zeon would've gotten its ass kicked even harder. Don't get me wrong, it's very likely thay the feddies wouldn't have found a pilot as good as Amuro, but they would have two extra RX-78 units to use and would be able to better coordinate the White Base's operations with their war effort.
The only Zeon grunt suit with specs that can pose a threat to the RX-78 is the Gelgoog and they only start making those really late into the war. There's also the fact that the Zabis will start to kill each other once they start losing the war, which causes confusion and mayhem within their own ranks.

But an extra or two RX-78s with no decent pilots means it won't perform at its best. We all know that at best it would make Sleggar survive the war longer, but the extra 2 would end with regular pilot at best, and theoretically, without amuro to trash half of zeon ace soldiers they would end up getting shot down somewhere down the line, probably on Odessa since Rambal Ral and the Tri black stars should be there along with other Aces. And remember, Amuro Wiped out Rambal's whole squad, so he would still have his crew of veterans with him

It’s amazing how much there is just on the first three units.
I can think of a use for the Gundam Hanmer. Smashing things. Seriously, even if it is part of standard training, swords require a lot of skill to use and sometimes you can find yourself in environments where missing a shot could mean a lot more destruction than you can afford. Would a mace make more sense for that purpose? Of course. We see that in IBO, but the chain of the Gundam Hammer itself can have other uses. Trip wire in low visibility. Entangling a foe. Using the hammer as an anchor.
My point is that the Gundam Hammer can be useful, even if it isn’t as often as most of the other weapons.
Either way, always happy to see more Gundam Development History (literally this time) and I am excited as this can eventually lead into the two histories that interest me the most: The RGM-79 GM and my beloved RX-79 [G] Gundam Ground Type.

Hmmmm... Actually my personal head canon about the whole RX-78-2 Gundam being upgraded to the specs of that of the RX-78-3 but still be called the RX-78-2 is that the Federation Engineers lead by Mosk Han didn't really have all that much time to fully upgrade the RX-78-2 to -3 Specs. Therefore, only included the Magnet Coating and maybe the upgrade to the Joints to allow the Coating to work properly. Everything else from the -3 Specs like the mentioned new reactor, and the redone backpack were not included in the RX-78-2. Hence, Amuro's Gundam remained as a simple RX-78-2 that has been slightly upgraded.
Also, I do love that new version of the RX-78-1 Prototype Gundam unit art seen in the Master Archive RX-78 Book. That actually looks like an interesting difference between that of the normal Gundam we see in the form of the RX-78-2 and that of the Prototype Gundam itself. I may actual include something like that in my head canon, or if I ever manage to actually start writing my own fanfiction novelization of the MSG Series then I will include that. Thanks Kakarot for the awesome video and the ideas that it spawned!

    - what was left of that eventually reached Jaburo too & was cobbled together w/ old parts from the initial testing on Earth just in case
    - it was recolored back to the old color for whatever reason & was destroyed during the Battle of Jaburo as seen in Spirits of Zeon (Ive been headcanoning at least parts of the game)

The parts used for the ground Gundam weren´t spare parts but unrefined and low quality parts which were made while developing the RX 78. This also is what causes the Ground gundams to constantly break and need maintanece as well as having an inbuild limiter to stop the machine from literally tearing itself apart. The original plan was to wait until they´d receive the data of the RX 78, but due to the advance of Zeon forces on earth they were desperate.

      @PuddinTaim 2 роки тому +1

My understanding is the [G] types were built from parts leftover for Operation V in general - not specifically for the RX-78 units but an attempt to mass-produce a version of the Gundam with less complex/expensive equipment (integrated chest cockpit, beam sabers running off the leg subreactors instead of dedicated backpack reactors, modular chest multi-launcher, etc).
Clearly they ran into a bottleneck with Luna Titanium production and couldn't produce more than 70 of them over the course of the summer. Thus, they chose to complete and deploy these units in ground-only configurations to pad out the Odessa and SE Asia fronts. The RGM-79[G] is merely the cheaper version, produced either in parallel or immediately subsequent to the Gundam-type.

Great video! Though I have some thoughts on other equipment such as...
-Microphone. The idea yet another prototype thing and can be considered as "nothing-burger", but theoretically, its definitely a predecesor of EWAC units. EWAC units may never pack a punch but its always a bad sign on battle field, specially on space coz they were often partner with solar ray or snipers. They even pack with jammers to bring more pain.
-Hammer. Its kinna silly that Federation will bring back such a medival weapon, but I think they thought its a flop ever since they faced MS with rope weapon(like Hammer) such as Gouf, and thought "the less size, the better".
-Beam Javelin. Its a powerful weapon so much so, that it can tear Gaw's wings, and is one of my fav close range weapon, but its p much made out of metal and everyone can cut its handle, which is why it doesnt always appear on any MS.
Cant get enough of Rx78. Looking forward for next one!

Overhyping the Learning Computer a bit. I'm not belittling its importance but, when you get down to it, it wasn't as incredible as they made it out. Essential, but not incredible. The thing was, basically, a combat assistant computer. The more it was brought into combat, the easier it was to pilot as it helped lift some of the burden from the pilot. Aim assistance. Obvious feature today. Super sci-fi back in the 70s.
As for other suits with it, the game G Generation Genesis does shed a light. Since this is a game, naturally it shouldn't be taken at face value. Seems that the rest of the RX-78 line were equipped with the computer. Even the Pixie units. But some high-end GMs were installed with them as well, like the White Dingo's GM Sniper II.

(On a realistic note, the rx-78-1 was most likely used as a basis or reference for the designs of the main gundam in that series, as they have done for multiple other older MS.)
Edit: looking further into it, its definitely probable. Appeared in 0079, and coupled with the info I said before, it's very likely that it is.

The funny part about the wacky Gundam/Hyper Hammer is that it unknowingly becomes a counter to I-Fields which would become very prevalent in mid to late UC, implying that aside from the specs, the Grandaddy gundam can go toe to toe with later mobile suits.
I mean, we even see that shite being used by the Amakusa's in Crossbone, granted those AI machines are pretty much Amuro's pilot and combat data.
The grandaddy will always be my favorite suit along side the GP series as they can pretty much hold themselves in most timelines bar 00 and Turn A (then again, most starting mobile suits in their respective series are pretty much an homage to the OG)... If only they made a DLC in Cross Rays with all the commonly known RX-78 variants before abandoning the game, it would've been perfect.
