Adam builds his first ever Gundam model (aka Gunpla)! In partnership with Bandai Namco Collectibles, Bandai Spirits, and the Gundam Online Expo 2021, Adam and the Tested team put together the incredible PERFECT GRADE UNLEASHED RX-78-2 GUNDAM model kit, admiring its beautiful interior mechanical frame design and iconic exterior Gundam armor. Adam is stunned by the detail of the model's parts and the precision of the pieces that satisfyingly snap-fit together!

@Adam i live in San Leandro, seeing you happy to make a kit this scale is beautiful; like watching a child discover their 1st bite of Vanilla Icecream. I would like to donate a High Grade Kit meant for being under Blacklight. Please email me where i should drop off this present.
Something that would be cool would be a interview with Adam and some of the Bandai Enginners, its not just the models they make, they make the injection molding machines and the crazy tech to do like the legs on that kit.
I personally built a smaller version of the rx78-2. And plus I know the name of the original pilot his name was aomaro.
Plus as a side note the arsenal of this Gundam includes two beam serbers one shield one hyper bazooka and one beam rifle.
Try building Perfect Grade Gundam Exia LED Version.
Mans' first GUNPLA build is one of the biggest and most time consuming models you can buy.
I really want to see him do more of this to be honest.
For my first gundam ever,I was so fascinated by the model that I stayed up late at night to finish it!
I want to see what he can do with a pile of HG kits and throwing all of his modeling skills at it... He should rebuild the epic Easy 8 Fight
I HAAAAAAATE that token asian guy, see him everywhere, STAND UP STRAIGHT DAMMNIT
RIP to his soul. The late Grant Imahara probably would've loved to build one of these with Adam. His love for robotics and Adam's love of building creative things would've made this moment even more so amazing. If you were there with Adam, Grant, I hope you enjoyed seeing this Kit and seeing his pure joy/excitement throughout it all.
Damn so true.
OMG i had no idea that he had died. i watched their show and loved every minute of it. (some of my favorite episodes many times over), i have missed so much in the last couple years. My heart goes out to his family. I only just recently lost my Grandfather last month and i can imagine what his family must've been going through at the time, not to mention the fans.
@@kieranfitzgerald2030 You're not alone I didn't realize grant died at all and my grandmother past away on the 9th of this month. It's a small world but may Grant rest in piece, I'm sure he's loved fondly

That's it, that's the joy of gunpla. People are so in love with building it they keep adding stuff like scribing (adding more deep lines), repainting, adding extra parts (kitbash), making body part longer or shorter, adding electric parts and more. It's just that addicting.
It can be as simple or as complicated as you want! :)
Exactly. I like to put SD heads on Hg kits
@@SpexSpexington Always got to be someone who takes something way to far. Bro buy one and build it, don’t obsess over it spending all your time and money coming up with retard terms like gunpla. Just act normal, that’s why no one enters your hobby anymore. Always got to overdo it
True. Non patient people won't understand this.
Finishing a build is so satisfying but I wish I had more patience to build the more complex builds. I don't actually build Gundam but Kotobukiya Zoids which have a lot of parts to build. Recently though I have started building smaller kits such as Bandai Figure-rise and smaller Kotobukiya Zoids like the Rev Raptor and I'm slowly starting to get my groove back into building.
I'm all for a new "Adam does Gunpla" segment. I love that you're fascinated by the mechanics and intricate engineering of it all. It's the very same thing that got me into the hobby in the late 90's. And it's just become even better in the last 20 year's.
Truth!
you know shit's gonna get good when he starts kit-bashing kits into new and weird stuff.
It's honestly amazing to compare the highest end modern kits to the original ones from back when MSG first aired...
I'd love to see Adam apply his lifetime of model making experience to Gunpla or some 30 Minutes Missions kits.
Ditto. He hasn't event gotten into painting the gundam yet.
If he has the money/opportunity, I vote for the infamous PG Wing Gundam Zero Custom. And then the Crossbone Gundam Full Cloth just because he'd get a kick out of building a pirate gundam. Oh, then either Unicorn, Banshee or Phenex Gundam next, just to round out the perfect grades.
When you see a man who has made crazy contraptions that do anything from picking things up to blowing them up, its a fun thing to see Adam get so excited to put together a mobile suit model kit.
....and proceeds to blow it up after!

Now there are two options:
- You gonna hate it.
- You will love it so much you'll never stop buying them.
I swapped building gunpla out for drinking thinking I would save money -.-
Safe to say option 2 happened.
For anyone that likes working with their hands and has an artistic mind it'll always be option 2 if they can afford it. Gunpla can get expensive, which is why I build them on and off. Usually Master Grades that I paint and weather myself.
@@DeathsPit00 same! I only have a few and space is my only saviour...
Money not much because I always prefer to be under a certain budget and usually also grade.

Man after years of building 40k and fantasy kits from sprues, this is truly incredible. I can’t believe how much detail and how posable these things are. And no glue required all snap fit. Japanese people are crazy. They put so much love and effort into things.
Seeing Adam, someone I've always admired since i was a kid, marvel at something that's so common to me today is such a strange feeling.
I think it shows how humble the man is!
The best part of this is Adams's genuine, child-like enthusiasm.
My god this thing is detailed!... This is something I didn't know I needed
Only a matter of time till he starts breaking out the chisels.
Is it just me, or does anyone else what the full recorded footage of them building this thing? Seeing Adam having fun with Gunpla is wonderful.
IMO, this should've been shot like the Ecto-1 build
A straight build of this kit takes ~8 hours. That's with nothing extra - paint, decals, panel lining, etc.
I was hoping this was a full build video lol hopefully he does another
I'd really love to see it all, uploaded in perhaps half or one hour parts.
Absolutely
I love how Adam bright up like a kid with each part assembly. And the "All your base are belong to us" just threats you to his nerdy geeky personality. This guy is one of my favorite persons.
Uwu
Seeing Adam's reaction to the pre-moulded mechanics is great. What's cool is that you get those in both Master Grades and Real Grades as well, so imagine them at smaller and smaller scales
No, imagine them in large scale that we can actually pilot 🥲
sadly newer real grades are moving away from them a couple still use them for like 1 or 2 sections but no longer the entire frame, which is actually better for support with the newer ones but idk something was so cool about having those pieces
The first Master Grade set I bought (directly due to watching this video of course) had that technique for the hands. It blew me away how each finger moves every joint individually, pre-assembled like those frames. I had the exact same reaction as Adam when I cut out the first hand.
It's usually the hands where the 3 finger are actually mechanically molded to be actuated
Okay but they're also all about $50 and high grades are just as fun
This may have been a video with special circumstances behind the scenes with the tie-in, but bringing the team together like this on more projects, with these calm interludes, would be awesome. I think what's different here from other team videos is the patience Adam seems to have with the project for once, haha :)
We agree! It was SO NICE to do this sort of project together again; we'd been avoiding them for the last year and a half due to COVID.
@@tested as a former jalopnik writer, I'd love to see Adam do more stuff with his vehicles, or talk with Toyota? They have a design center in Newport that may let Adam visit one day

When he cut out the leg assembly and just had his mind blown with the articulation it made my day.
His reaction was so pure. I love it!

These models are so fabulous you even don't have to be a particular fan of Gundam to love them. Built a Perfect Grade kit about ten years ago and they were using that multi mould technique even then. Each finger came off the sprue with three way articulation.

They revolutionized even the ways that THEY developed years ago.

Yep they already did it with the first perfect grade Gundam which is more than 20 years ago.

Every Bandai Pla kit is amazing, HG is good to collect, MG is great for scale and detail, and PG is just another level. I recently finished Unicorn PG. @@chinwyian technically if they're of the same.grade, you can interchange any of them. They pretty much use the same pivot joints and attachments.
@@chinwyian Stuff’s called kitbashing, it's pretty rad
@@chinwyian I mean, if you don't mind HG or expensive kit. I can think of 2. one is 30MM or 30 minute missions by bandai, it is not gundam, and it is HG but it has customization in mind, check youtube on how ppl customize their kits. UA-camr Zaku Aurelius made a contest about it and you can see what this 30MM kits can do.
second one is kotobukiya hexagear. same with 30MM it has customization in mind. both have many holes and the holes are uniform, so you can attach anything you want in those holes and build something interesting out of it
or, you can do kitbash, but it requires certain degree of understanding of a kit which sometimes you need to cut, sand or drill a part to fit into another kit
@@chinwyian Most High Grade kits, especially from the last decade, are highly interchangeable, as are the 30 Minute Missions line of model kits which are very compatible with HG Gunpla due to sharing peg/hole sizes. Master Grade model parts can sometimes be easily swapped, but that isn't nearly as common. The Gundam SEED and Wing MGs are a good example of 1/100 kits that share a good bit of compatibility. But with enough time and effort, anything can be done when it comes to modeling 👍

Figure you deserve the credit if anyone is checking. I bought my first gunpla kit after watching the video.
This is a combo I never knew I wanted. I love seeing people getting introduced to Gunpla and I can't believe he chose the best one first.
6:00 The pre-fitted movable parts are impressive in a Perfect Grade, but they're absolutely mind-boggling on a Real Grade, when they come off the frame ready to go but are like, half the size of your pinky.
True!
In exchange for the cool engineering, though, those old RG kits' joints were prone to loosening significantly after a few years.
They can be tightened up using the usual methods, but still. The other problem is that the plastic they use is a lot less resilient than the rest of the kit, meaning some paints can and will eat through it, if you like painting the frame.
One thing to both love and hate about Bandai is their willingness to take on risks when it comes to engineering. Anyone who built a Real Grade Zeta, which can transform from robot to jet without swapping parts for no reason other than to prove it could be done at that scale, knows what I'm talking about.
@@ITNoetic Yeah I only got into Gunpla about two years ago. My first kit was an RG Sinanju, (I picked it up locally while waiting for a Sinanju Stein and a Zabanya to come in the mail... I did some research and figured if I could wrestle my way through the RG Sinanju I should probably be able to put the other kits together and have them come out looking nice,) and I honestly hate the glossy red finish so I painted the whole thing with Kampfer colors and metallic paint for the frame. We'll see how it holds up over time. (Of course, I've got it on an action base, so at least those knee joints won't be under any strain.)
@@ITNoetic Great to know. This is really cool stuff. It's like mixing the challenge mechanical puzzles, the fun of Legos, and beauty of a sculpture in one.
The first time I came across this, I was both impressed and pissed off. I was impressed by the technology, but I was really, really pissed off because large parts of the frame were already built for me. It felt like it defeated the purpose a bit, and I just let it shit on a shelf before I started building the thing.

Yes, yes they did. That's why this hobby is so expensive.
And yet cheaper and a whole lot better than other companies. Bandai's got game. (Except for P-Bandai hahaha)
I think GunPla in general is not Expensive, Ive been building for the past 17 years and the price still hasnt change much. You can buy a decent High Grade kits for one week worth of lunch money. Or on Average you can buy 1 Master grade a month. In a Few years you can have 100+ of Kits.

But now i can buy online, I got into it, was thinking i would just get like 3 or 4..... but i ended up with 20 now....
I'm coming here way after the fact even though I missed the boat on the first wave of comments because nobody has explained the leg inner frame correctly.
The leg inner frame is molded in sequence in ABS plastic, which is semi-crystaline and only bonds to itself. The second plastic is in Polypropylene which is fully crystalline and also only bonds to itself. This creates working joints without having to have radically different thermoset temperatures because the two plastics chosen simply don't cling to each other. No additional coating of release agent is required at all, it just uses the plastics' innate properties.
That's Frickin DOPE
I just got this kit and your explanation makes much more sense than one plastic injected at different temps. The tolerances in the premolded joints are so tight that it would make more sense to have two plastics that don't bond. Rocket scientist level engineers over at Bandai.
@@dkimcg It's what makes the constant improvements and innovations in the kit engineering so fun and fascinating to follow.

In my years of Gunpla, I have gone as high as putting together a 14 hour Master Grade build. I have never had the luxury of assembling a PERFECT GRADE. That build process is a dream right there.
I'd like to see his reactions to one of the middle Real Grades (like either of the RG Astrays or Unicorns) and see how they miniaturized the Advanced MS Joints to a 1/144 scale.

I bought my first kit from my local hobby store the next day and I was hooked. I've watched plenty of Gundam series since then, but I still love the models way more.
@@stevewest5397 The models have been so good for so long that back in the day they literally saved the entire franchise from cancelation. The original series wasn't a huge hit when it first was airing, but the models were such massive successes with older audiences that it led to a full re air and eventually the compilation movies that did end up being huge hits. And this led to Zeta Gundam getting greenlit, and the franchise became a monster from there. So the models are as essential to Gundam as the shows are!

So I wanna say, I own this model, I had all the same reactions as Adam it is rather pricey at £180 when I bought it (it had just came out) and by myself and being my 20th odd figure this thing still took me alone about 30 hours. It's a brilliant kit and I can't recommend it enough.
Once you've had your bearings I recommend a lot of the rg, mg grades and of course perfect grade and the mgex unicorn but don't go for it unless your confident as it has led strips and wiring. (It's all wired for you but you just have to be careful when building to not damage).
If you can afford any kit from gundam I highly recommend them as they are a joy to build and keep you busy.
When I saw he was building a Gundam I was like "Oh he's gonna go hog-wild when he gets to the leg"... and he did NOT disappoint!
Man, they really spoilt him on his first build with what is considered one of the best Gunpla kits right now :P
The PG Unleashed is basically the accumulation of wisdom over years of Bandai's own engineering and the collective creativity of Gunpla builders across the world. Hope he does more :)
That's what I was saying they gave him the best of the best to build, while where are insanely good Gunpla, most of the others are not as good, this gunpla is like what you do after you've done a buncha High grades, real grades and master grades, just so you can even more appreciate it
What would you guys recommend to begin with? I'm thinking of buying my first kit and I was considering buying the Nu Gundam one
@@abelpf The Nu gundam Ver ka? No no no That one is a good kit for someone with experince. It has parts that can be very Finicky. I recommend going with something like the Entry grade RX-78-2. Or some High grades, Something like the Moon Gundam, or if you want something big The Xi Gundam.
@@LunaS043 I think the name is Real grade Nu Gundam... Would it be the Ka version? Thanks for the recommendations, I'll check them out!
@@abelpf real grade is not for beginners. One of my first build was RG exia and i hated it. I suggest you go for HG and choose a kit you like and build it. HG are pretty easy and can be customized infinitely. It also have the most kits out of all of the grades.
Seeing one of my childhood idols gushing over the mechanical intricacy of a perfect grade Gundam fills me with joy.
Adam did absolutely amazing with a PG unleashed for his first time. i've been building for about a year now and i don't think i could do anything close to this quality. great job, Adam!
Would love to see him do a rg unicorn. He'd go nuts transforming it.
Even better, the mgex version of the unicorn.
or The infamous RG ZETA GUNDAM
MG Zeta, ZZ, Delta and Exs Gundams. And don’t forget the RG cross bone because of those tiny parts lol and the LEDs on the PG Exia there’s loads of Gundam models that will blow his mind lol.
@@BlackCrimsoN21 ugh...and that was my first RG too. Thank god MG Zeta 2.0 is good.
I'd love to see his reactions to the G40. Its small and doesn't seem super impressive compared to the PGU, but the beautiful articulation makes it like the JoJo character of the Gunpla world.
Adam if you love this, then you’ll love battle damage customization. That type of customization allows you to show the different layers of the build. Check out the Japanese winners of Gunpla build. Details from saber strikes & damage through to dents from shells & even reentry scorching. I’ve even seen thrusters done to look like the space shuttle’s weathering.
This is really satisfying. Such elegant model. As a Warhammer hobbyist, I can say you haven't known frustration until you've tried to superglue on Thunderhawk wings or build an old metal Ork dreadnought without it falling apart or glueing your face to your face.
Or, the horror that is Failcast.
oddly enough, I'm having a blast with aliexpress resin miniatures.
ok the fact that it's a big tiddy bog monster waifu helps my motivation but like, the fitting is perfect, sculpting is S tier (or should I say DD?) and it was like 4 euros with free international shipping.
and yes I play tau.
I had enough hassle just building a Storm Raven and Predator tank. I have a hard time going back to Warhammer miniatures after experiencing how enjoyable building Gunpla is. The end result also grants you a poseable figure. Paint is also optional.
@@lpsoldin3162 I do both and while I absolutely agree with you warhammer models give you an absolutely stellar end result and painting is the best part (IMO).
Bandai kits are an absolute joy to build but it takes serious skill to get them looking like those you see in gbwc, while with warhammer even if you're not going for golden demon quality it's easy enough to get your minis to look like the ones on the box, and only minimal effort is required to get even better results
The virgin primaris snapfit versus the Chad Gundam Snapfit
My very first Gunpla was a Heavy Arms Custom from Endless Waltz. It was only a 1/144, but the time and effort made it enjoyable then. Now, I've come back to see the new kits and am not only nostalgic, but eager to advance my skills. And it's funny, my first Gundam back is the RX-78-2 in 1/100! Can't wait.
Bandai is years away from other scale model brands, building those kits is amazing.
Yeah its incredible how good the tech in Bandai models are, Gundam or otherwise. Their closest competitor in this space, Kotobukia, are still a distant second in construction and technical complexity.
I bet Grant Imahara is smiling on the heaven right now and would love to build and assemble that with you Adam. ❤️
I so gotta see Adam building more of these. Even longer videos showing his enjoyment of this would be great, as watching him build and enjoy is damned satisfying.
I’ve always thought that gundams were lame until I saw this video. I thought you had to hassle with glue and all the mess and annoyance for a mediocre end result like most model cars but I NEVER would have IMAGINED in my wildest dreams that they were this beautiful. I am absolutely OBSESSED with gunpla now because of this video.. thank you Adam and Norm and the tested team for this video, you have introduced me to the type of hobby I’ve been looking for all my life and never knew it’s been right in front of me ever since I was a child… I would have NEVER known how amazing these kits are had it not of been for this video… I cannot thank you guys enough.. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
You should definitely try to look at Real Grade (RG) Gunplas. The way they incorporate stuff from their higher grade brethren like Master Grade (MG) into a smaller scale is just incredible (MG 1/100 vs RG 1/144)
@@AbrahamArthemius RGs are great but the older generation RGs are to be avoided sadly, they are hand grenades where pieces always fall off the moment you try to pose them.... the newer ones though are (*chef's kiss*) brilliant. The Nu, Sazabi, and Hi-Nu are tiers above the earlier generation RGs, even MGs
@@ervinnesodusta1130 True that
Awesome at how Adam gets amazed by this marvel of engineering in miniature.
Glad he enjoyed it.
And he was mindblown by the inner frame
You have taken your first step into a larger world.
I feel like I am watching a child discovering a new toy for the first time. In the case of Adam who is a seasoned model builder who built star wars models from scratch(for Star Wars), he is seeing modeling technique he never thought it existed. Basically he is the child in all of us when we all discovered gundam for the first time. It would be funny to see adam bring his own gunpla kit for any future GBWC shows.
Now someone get him a Mega Scale kit for his large hands!
Top drawer quote! When I did my first little MG build and started finding all the cool poses with cinematic ‘attitude’ that gave real character to the model....yeah I felt that same thrill.
Totally love seeing Adam geek out with gunpla model making! To actually make it look better are to file off the 'nubs' where the parts are being supported, that's how advanced and pros make their gundams look more presentable & professional. And you can panel line it as well to bring out the detailing of the grooves.
And this is why, after multiple years of working as a skilled trades contractor in Multiple General Motors plants, my family only drives Japanese 🇯🇵 engineered vehicles ! Absolute Perfection 🇯🇵👍
Man this is heart warming to see the myth buster that I grew up watching and aspiring to be like building the very same models that bring me so much happiness
"they made a build experience is so pleasurable".. well said Adam
didnt expect adam to build a gundam model, let alone a PG unleashed. This makes me happy inside haha. i finished few months ago and cant get over how easy of a perfect grade this is. i think it would be interesting for adam to after PGU he go straight for a entry grade rx78 for giggles. i think u'll appreciate bandai manufacturing genius
GUNPLA
IS
FREEDOM
You might wanna take a look at Real Grade, too. One of the things about that is having an actual inner frame to the entire model.
Or hell, you can try the HG Moon Gundam - brilliant piece of engineering, and it's goddamn beautiful.
Love that Adam enjoyed the build so much. Been playing with these for years and the joy of building them is what gets me every time.
I feel sorry for Adam. Once you start your first gunpla journey, there’s no stopping. The next will keep magically appear in your collection.
Very true. Heck, I started with a bootleg HG GMIII kit my friend gave me years ago and I never looked back.
I hadn't built any for a few years.. and just a few days ago I got myself some stands and a Verde Buster. The rabbit hole never lets go.
lol so true
It's just a shame that theres no stepping up from here other than customizing and kitbashing. Imagine if he started with an HG to an MG to an RG THEN to this?
@@keeleon With his skill, he could create amazing diorama and customize any kit he wants to.
All he needs to do is watching at least one series and get hyped. I hope he watch MS08th.
I've not made a gunpla yet but "my hands feel so big and dumb" seems so relatable and apt.
I remember building my first PG. It was the old one of this particular Gundam. I was quite proud after I finished it. Too bad I ran out of room for more, as I tended to stick with particular Master Grades. If I get a big enough place I might take it up again. God knows what they will be like by then.
Would absolutely love to see Adam kitbash a couple of these sets into some new Sci - fi contraption.
Bandai recently started a new line of non-Gunpla called 30 Minute Missions that are entirely based around kitbashing, they're really cool
This is epic! Seeing Adam enjoy building a Gundam makes the fact I just bought my first couple of gunpla all the more exciting. Of course I only got a MG and 2 HG as I'm a noob and figured I should start easy.
i just got my first mg!
I found a v gundam
Every model kits have different level of excitement. The more complex it is, the higher the satisfaction
It's so awesome to finally see Adam and the Tested crew put a gunpla together - I've been building for the better part ot twenty years, and it's incredible to see the leaps and bounds Bandai have made in their quality and features on these models. I am beyond excited for the possibility of more gunpla here on Tested!
it's so cool to me that LEGO came from Denmark, this tiny country really made alot of children and even adults Enjoy something so amazingly fun
Adam: Between the four of us we can get it done.
Adam as soon as he starts: This is a solo process.
Dear Bandai, please keep sending Adam more model kits so he can do the reviews for us.
This was my 30th kit, and this is your first kit. Kudos
Adam needs to pull all of his celebrity, maker, and practical effects cred to get a tour of the Bandai gundam factory where this was made. I want to see a series of him gushing over the manufacture of these models with the people who design and make them.
awww I was hoping to see him getting crazy over the open hatches, those looks BEAUTIFUL and lets you look back all the phases in one go
Man, I can't wait to see Adam learn all the building tricks to make these kits even more amazing.
