Great video. I bought a glass scrub board in hafr al'batan Saudi Arabia during desert storm. My entire platoon used ot for several months. It worked great. It broke on the trip home, but it's been replaced with another from a yard sale. I use a round tub for wash and 2 squares for rinsing. Have a good day.
Found myself handloading cast .45 Colt and .45-70 while listening to some Fred Eaglesmith out in the barn the other night. Thanks, Mr Looms, I learned a lot from you.
Thanks for the info. Will have to keep an eye open for originals. Have some funnels from that company and they're good. Good info to have for when the junky new washing machines go out, too.
I have a couple of tubs different sizes. For Christmas a couple years back I asked for a wash board. Family thought I was nuts, but then again I haven't changed. If it's old and been around along time it's built to last.
Use them wash boards at the Off Grid cabin. Mostly dish towels, rags and very good for all the wool hunting socks. I also use the metal funnel looking plunger type.
I didn't have a washing machine until I was almost 30. I have to say, that hand washing makes for much cleaner clothes than any washing machine I had since..
Yep, and clothing lasts longer, I have occasionally taken stuff to a laundromat, and they never really get clean, just rinsed. It seems to me things like stained knees on jeans almost get permanently locked in by running them through a conventional washer.
Got some Kirk's soap and I love it. Thank you for the reviews and experience you pass on with tested products. My Have-a-Hanks are still going strong except for the one I used to dampen a chain with. That one is now two smaller ones but hey, fits better in my pocket anyways. It''s good your passing on your life experiences in these videos. They will out live us and maybe add some knowledge for the youngins. Thanks
Hey, check out Grandmas lye soap. It has just three ingredients: lard, water, and lye. I used to find it locally but of course it’s gone and I have to order online. It’s my main wash soap and I love it.
Old fashioned Lye soap mashed with sugar =powerful drawing paste! Nanny got a needle out of my foot Drs were going to operate to get, & leave me with a limp. She said let me try this first. 2 weeks the 1” long needle popped out! It had worked itself behind ligament & still came out. She changed paste daily.
I remember a glass one my mother had and seems like I cracked it when I was a young boy. I had forgot about that board til I saw this and I thought I had one I was holding on to but it got away over the years.
My mother had a Matag wringer washer and double tubs. We sold the set to Amish near us, they run the washer off a gas motor because they don't use electricity. The settlement here is old world Amish.
Good morning, Sir. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences. Not related, but have you got your grub box and contents together yet? I would love to see how it turned out. Thank again.
Not kidding, but you get both your clothes cleaned and a workout...thats why most people these days are eother out of shape or need to pay to ho to a gym. I prefer letting my work be my workout.
The problem with the Speed Queen models I am familiar with is the tub is enameled steel, scratch the enamel and they rust out, the Maytag is aluminum. Also the Maytag has a square body which gives better agitation then the round body Speed Queen. We had a Speed Queen when I was a kid, and they work, but it's hard to beat the old square tub Maytag.
In Australia they were sold as Kleenmaid washing machines. I bought one in 1987. Used it hard until 2022, it was pretty noisy at the end. Total repair cost along the way was $5.00 for a new control knob. I bought a lightly used, well cared for slightly later model for $50.00 to replace it. The tubs were Stainless Steel.
@@logcabinlooms that sounds like a good machine. A square tub I will have to check that out. Thanks for showing the different soaps I went to the store and bought some kirks soap after I watched it.
I'm quite surprised that Bearwood doesn't have the layer of pine tar on it yet. It always drives me nuts when I go into a second-hand store and see something like a washboard or something that I'm looking for to use screwed up on a wall like decoration.

I still have mine. And still have to use it from time to time. Enjoy your videos and your views.

Great review of these often forgotten items of great use. Blessings
North Dakota's most interesting man. That was alot better than any coronation shmorination.
You said " they do not make them like they used to. ". No truer words were ever spoken and it applies to almost everything sold today, sadly so.

Fels Naptha soap along with 20 mule team borax are my go to soaps. Fels is great to wash with after exsposure to poison ivy also!
Thank you for sharing. I never knew about Behrens and their sets of tubs. Ill have to look at them and combine with my Columbus washboard.
Thanks I Remember mom doing laundry by hand

This is what we need thank you 😇
Thank you for time buddy! Great content as always! You look and are so much like my Grandfather! Keep it up my friend!
Thank you for the video. It was a good reminder that we need to go back to the basics.
We use an industrial mop ringer for our clothes. Works great! The same kind janitors use that’s yellow.
That’s a great idea for a ringer/mangler! TY
Great post, still have my Grandmothers tubs, scrubboards, and a couple cakes of FELLSNAPTHA ,labels are turning yellow, but will still work !
Love this content !

Dam! Last Fall I just bought a new Queen Washer and dryer for $2250.

Ive used a soft brissel horse brush. The clothing comes back cleaner than a washing machine.

How about a house tour?
I've got my grandmother's washboard mabe by National Washboard from the 1930. It's glass
Yep ,my mother used to make lye soap I still have a few bars of it.
Mine used to make it too, not that difficult, lye is still around,,and lard is available. I do remember is smelled when it was cooking.
I have a new one just replaced my old 50 yr one . New one is from Columbus wash board company . Columbus Ohio usa
Try the Jamaican blue soap

Hows the root cellar coming along? Any chance of a video of it?
Don't you run your Maytag with your david Bradley? That David Bradley is a cool unit. I like the idea of the 2 wheel tractor.
That's with my older model Maytag that has the external pulley for a gas motor.
How do you get your water hand pump well?
Yes, but I also have a couple springs on the property, also a stock pond, and a waterhole I dug out to pump water on the gardens.
Not kidding, but you get both your clothes cleaned and a workout...thats why most people these days are eother out of shape or need to pay to ho to a gym. I prefer letting my work be my workout.
I may just get pretty ripe because the arthritis in my hands isnt going to allow much use of a wash board again...
My grandmother made her own lye soap, do you make it? Might be a good video?
What do you think about speed queen washers? Heard they are pretty hard to beat

Thats what u find in most laundromats. They take abuse and keep workin!
