Yes, bees are one of the main important things for food production - as without them we would have only a few months worth of food to feed humanity on Earth! Many main foods would disappear within months of there being no bees to pollenate plants. Say goodbye to apples, coffee, corn, avocado and others. My main concern was that the way they vacuumed the bees up that the ulk of them would die...

zfa Have you ever been stung by either a Bee, Wasp or Hornet? When I was 14 yrs old me and a friend were walking along a Scottish river near Edinburgh and my mate being in front (he knew where we were going) accidently kicked over a Hornets nest that had somehow got onto the path. They were really pissed! We ran like hell. He got the brunt of the stings as he was first in line both coming and going. I think he got 70 or so stings. I got away with a mere 43 stings. I do not recommend the experience! BEE careful where you put your feet out there in the woods!

Jeff Horchoff I never thought of removing a wall hive like that, and using it to great a bee box hive. Is this a standard practice, when folks have a hive in their wall?
About 14 years ago my mother in-law had an infestation of what was refered to as 'carpenter bees'. I had never heard of those, until then. Are they diffrent than honey bees?
Is there a simple way of telling between them?
I'm pretty sure I have a hive in one of my walls. During the summer, you can hear a buzzing bee sound in that room. And it sounds like it's coming from an outside corner wall. If it is honey bees. Do they do a lot of damage? As I know honey bees are important contributor to the human food supply. And I'm surrounded by farm lands. If they're honey bees. I don't want to disturb them, unless it is necessary.
I'm *extremely* allergic to all types of stings. So I won't get close to anything that buzzes.
I was aghast to see some weren't covered up. Then the guy with his fingers all bandaged at the end. Made me shiver.

That reaction is pretty much what every homeowner experiences when I show them the bees that are in their house. After they pick their mouths off the floor in disbelief, and steady themselves from the shaking fit, their first words are," I don't believe this"
But after about 4 hours and all the bees and comb are gone, all is back to normal. These bees are doing fantastic in their new home, and next spring we will get honey from them as well as split the hive. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

Impressive! My skin was crawling looking at those bees, don't know how you do it! I had some questions Mr Ed. I'm so curious...
    1. How on earth do you located the queen amongst all those bees?
    2. Is this a special vacuum? Where do the bees go? Don't they get mad being disturbed?
    3. Why aren't you getting stung?
    4. When you cut into the honeycomb, do you risk hurting baby bees in there?
    5. If you take all the honey, how can their babies eat? Queen eat?
It would be so nice to get some answers to these questions that bug me.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  7 років тому +304

      1. Steve found her on this one, he beat me to it. Usually, I see something different and that's how I find her.
      2. Yes it is a vac just for bees, low pressure. I will be making a video on it in about 2 weeks after things slow down with the swarms. You are going to have to check that one out. The bees go into a bee box, and yes, they don't like it.
      3. I get stung all the time. On this job i was stung at least 4 times, but it won't stop me from doing what I love doing.
      4. We trim the comb around the brood as we save all the brood to give back to the bees.
      5. We give almost all the honey back to the bees. They need it to survive at this time of the year, so it all goes back. Later, in the summer and fall, I take some and give some to them.
Hope that helps. Thanks for watching, and asking good questions. God's peace. Mr. Ed

Jeff, thank you so much for taking the time to craft a reply. My curiosity could not be contained. I love the idea of making my own honey, have to look into that. Also joining a bee club as you mentioned in another post. Never thought that existed!!
One thing I will mention here... On the D-day beaches of Normandy, France, in the little town of Bayeux, famous for its wool embroidered 'tapestry' and lace-making, was the best honey I have ever tasted. In a small open market, I bought a small jar of honey made locally. Tasted it back in USA, and oh boy! The perfume just lingered on the tongue. It was the flowers out there, you could taste them in the honey. I have to go back again now, 20 yrs later and see why it was so good. Normandy also makes dairy, cheese, cream, butter that is fantastic. The Wisconsin state of France.

You know I love watching people catch bees instead of killing them. We have a lot of flowers that bloom down here and a lot of people who think the only good thing is to kill them or be scared. I've learned through the years Bees are VERY gentle unlike wasps if you leave them alone. The only time I've ever seen a Bee attack people is because they attack it. And on another note: Beautiful Queen! I hope the Beekeeper gets a good harvest this year :D it looks like he might need to buy a new housing soon for them.

Jane and I will be checking out your videos over the next few days. I hope that you agree with the replies that I have left on other comments on this video. It seems as if so many people have irrational fears when it comes to bees. We have a lavender bush just outside our front door and in the summer, the postman leaves our letters next door when it is in flower. One of my favorite memories was the day that one of our friends had collected a swarm and was driving it home in a cardboard box on the back seat of his car. Due to all the road humps, he was driving so slowly that the police pulled him over and wanted to check out what was in the box on his back seat. Another funny story from a few years ago, was the guy who moved into central London from his country house and decided to keep a hive on the tiny balcony of his flat in a tower block. The hive was less than 3 feet from his neighbors window. The council evacuated the entire building and story ended up on national television news LOL.

The bees you deal with are always so calm compared to the ones I kept with my grandfather. They would sting anyone within 1000 feet of the hives. I got stung so many times I can't even remember even when the hive was hundreds of feet away. They got annoyed so easily. It totally killed my desire to ever keep bees myself.

I know I am fortunate to have gentle bees, they do make the experience so much nicer when the bees are not aggressive. I post these videos, to show just how important bees are to our very survival, and why we should not just kill them out of ignorance. I have been rescuing bees from being needlessly destroyed for over 6 years now, and hope to continue to do so for many more years to come. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace.

Omegapede Prime part of the issue is you cannot make beehives from pressure treated wood which has pesticides which have the side effect of killing your bees. this makes them far more vulnerable to the elements especially in the southern states where humidity and high temperatures are the norm from April to October.

That was the onle and only time I ever seen a wild hive so big in the UK. Was in an abandoned barn, moved some old scaffold boards that where leaning against a wall inside and there it was. What I find really facinating is that you frame up the hives that you save and then put it in the bee box. I think that is so much less stressful for the swarm. We purchased a cabin in the Bull Mountains after our other cabin burned down in the 2012 Bull Mountain Fire. We were getting ready to have it re-roofed when we found a huge hive in the rafters close to one corner of the roof. We called Bee Rescue, every apiairy, every bee hobbyist and called places in other states and no one would come to get them. Finally, roofing day was arriving so we had to eradicate them. I cried like a baby when my husband had to spray them. I wish you would have been in Montana because I would have had you here so quick to save them. My husband and I felt just awful about it.

I really need to watch the whole thing before I start with my questions and comments!! do you want several bees with the queen in the trap? when you say in some of your videos, taking care of the queen, do you mean feeding her? do you think they have been there...years, months, weeks...with or without swarming? and finally...is that one queen the whole time or does she grow old and get replaced? how long do they typically lay for?

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  7 років тому +3

The queen is to large to get out of the cage, but the workers can get in. After the queen is captured, worker bees will crawl into the cage and tend to the queen. Yes, feed, and pamper her during her incarceration. A queen can live up to 5 years, but will be replace when the hive determines she is no longer productive or is damaged in some way. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

You are correct, a special vacuum is necessary to vacuum bees, but the issue is not wet, dry, or even sticky, it's suction. The bee vac I use and built is specially designed for low suction so as not to harm the bees when they are vacuumed. I post these videos, to show just how important bees are to our very survival, and why we should not just kill them out of ignorance. In Fort Lauderdale, one of the oldest buildings is an early 1900's hotel. It was two story, yada, yada.
Well, once it was no longer doing business as a hotel, it became a historical site which catered to educating the local youth, being renamed the Discovery Center. In the dedicated science room, they had discovered a hive which looks just like the one in this video. Since it was on the exterior wall nearest the river where no one would go, they didn't remove it. On the inside they put up a permanent clear plexiglass viewing window. It was such a treat for children & adults alike to be able to safely watch the bees in action without any chance of harm. Apparently, on the exterior, they installed an access panel as sometimes they would actually have jars of honey with comb as well as jars of filtered honey for sale in the gift shop.
I don't know if the hotel still has the hive in it. The Discovery Center upgraded to a huge, modern facility, being renamed The Museum for Discovery & Science, years ago, & it contains no hive. I had taken my children to the new facility many times in their youth & was so disappointed that they couldn't have that same experience. Seeing the living bees, busy, energetic, buzzing, industrious, as well as the craftsmanship of their combs with one's eyes, rather than just on a screen is awe-inspiring. And as you say, the sound. There is nothing quite like hearing that sound & realizing THAT is coming from their wings & so LOUD.

Yes, I am fascinated by bees and I enjoy your work and closeness with the bees :3
But I love honey, so I'd certainly be wearing a bee-suit to take that honey.
That would be cool to have your own growing supply of honey in your own home and if bees could get used to you and know your scent and will leave you be if you don't hurt them. If it truly could work like that, that is one insect infestation I wouldn't mind having. (save for any human guests that might come to visit and as long as the bees didn't interfere with my electrical/pipes/wires.)
Well shoot, I guess there's a reason bees generally belong outside. XD

.....at lest fully are the operative words.

@@JeffHorchoff I agree with you, fully. Like the ancient Confucian saying goes an ounce of prevention is worth its weight in gold.

would like to see those bees try that on our solid concrete and brick walls ;p pretty amazing how they can produce such a mesh of perfect hexagons

I have not pulled bees from solid concrete, but from brick wall, cinder blocks, slab homes, raised homes, trailers, cars, boats, and on and on, They will make their hive where ever there is spare for them to accomplish their task. Amazing creatures. I post these videos, to show just how important bees are to our very survival, and why we should not just kill them out of ignorance. Not the way I'd recommend getting honey either, but it does happen very often, and when it does, bee keepers are ready to help out. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out a few more of my videos on my channel and let me know what you think of them. God's peace.
