Im a bucket and hand wash kinda laundry do-er but was always intrigued by these. Thanks for saving me the trouble! (And its important to have multiple uses for one bucket!) Laundry line hack - thin paracord, fold the line in half and tie in lnots along the length so that the 2 strands lay together. Then you just tuck your clothes into the gap between the lines. No pins required. And because you have a long line of loops, use a carabiner on each end to secure to the trees
The wife & my retirement is languishing when the high point of your Wednesday morning is watching a woodsy couple do their laundry in a cheapo amazon washing machine. 🤭👍 Well at least it has a drain to watch your hundred dollars drain away . Thanks Dustin & Emmy it was fun to watch. 👊😎👍
Being a Nomad myself, best way I have found to wash small amounts of clothes is a 5 Gal bucket and a toilet plunger. The old school regular plunger, not the one that has the narrow end that fits in the drain of the toilet. Just plunge the clothes in water and it literally sucks the dirt out.
Hi Dustin I strapped a chepo cooling box on top of my front bumper. Put your cloth, some warm water with soap into. The movement while driving will do the rest.
Hey Dustin! I live off grid and here is, what I feel, is the best laundry solution for rig livin'. -Lehman's manual washing wand -2 x 5 gallon buckets (one can be a collapsible style) -The Ninja spinner (by The Laundry Alternative)...spins at 3200 rpm! -optional - tripod octopus laundry hanger I can wash clothing or bedding and have it +95% dry in less than 30 minutes. Takes up very little space and weight, you prob already have the buckets, and it uses only as much water as you need or want. Enjoy! Love your channel 🤩
Am I glad you posted this! My daughter was looking at getting one for her small apartment. Now I can let her know not to waste her money! Thanks, Dustin!
The 'Wonderwash Non-electric Portable Compact' (Amazon) works pretty good too. The same design was made from metal decades ago. If you find one in an antiques store - go for it. The new ones made of plastic feel flimsy, but still do a better job than a regular top loader. For RVing it is a bit bulky though. For RVing the plunger style 'Rapid Laundry Washer' (Lehman's or Amazon) works good for smaller loads (5 gal pail) if you really can't find a laundromat for weeks.
Hey you should try the Eco friendly laundry sheets… takes up so much less room to store and it won’t harm the environment… I love them!! Clean clothes… it’s the little things 😉
They make a hand operated washer for camping/off grid. But I might agree with you a washboard may work out better. Or do like they do in the western movies where the woman goes to the creek and beats the clothes across a big bolder.
2 years working Nat'l. Parks' outback I only had an old fashioned washboard and an 8 gallon tub. Very simple and worked great. No dirty socks! Bed sheets are a bit of a chore, however.
Looks interesting, I could see using it for just a few items once in a while, but I loved Emi’s immediate response of “no”. Got our DA tshirts in the mail today- going to throw them in my big fancy, digital, wi-fi enabled washer and wear it tomorrow! I❤your tag line of “take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints”. Thanks for the great videos, be safe!
This is the work shop Wednesday I’ve been waiting for. My family and I have been camping for years and we’ve found most fix all products seem to be snake oil. Love the content keep it up
So tried several whilst I was nomadic... An it's worth it to spend on the 89.00 one.. it's worked well you just can not fill it up with clothes other wise it can not properly agitate... The close need to freely move in water. Plus too much detergent. Your clothes will never get clean but will burn up the machine too! Much like a regular washer... I like a good washboard for getting stuff clean .. so I bought one of those round heavy plastic tubs(has rope handles) then bought an agitator that sticks to bottom of container an agitates. It worked really very well!! Thanks for sharing your life with us...
Lol kinda sucks puts it lightly haha.. loving the shorts way to promote the channel. What I do if interested is I have a 30l food barrell the kind they use for canoeing etc. I fill with lake/river water etc add clothes and soap seal lid and place in the back of my truck as I drive it cleans rinse and repeat.. hope this helps bud 👍🏻
Use a large dry bag as washing machine! That's how I wash clothing on road trips and on cruise ships. Just drop clothes in dry bag, add detergent and water, close it. Shake shake shake. Drain., repeat with rinse water once or twice and you're done!
I can't stand the stench of laundry detergent. I use a mix of borax and washing soda, both available at Canadian Tire. A small sealer jar is a years Supply. No ugly smells, a tenth of the price of laundry detergent
Hey, not all is lost..... that thing would make a fantastic crapper!!! Travel without the worries of disposing of solids. You'd have the cleanest black water available today especially if you added a Gain Pod to every dump! 🤣
I have the same one from Temu. I paid around $40. It jumped around on the counter when spinning. It works but you can’t put very much in it. It’s easier to wash by hand. I’m giving mine away. I bought a costway portable and love it!.
Better than a washboard is a 5 gallon bucket with a brand new toilet plunger, 5 minutes of plunging, squeeze out soapy water, add clean rinse water and plunge 5 minutes, repeat rinse cycle 2 times. Would recommend you use the True Earth laundry sheets for washing and True Earth fabric softener strips. Both are eco friendly packaged in lightweight cardboard and can be used together in the washer, even your bucket/plunder for true off grid laundry. I would recommend seperating your laundry just like at home, but with the bucket/plunger system you'll only need 1/4 of a regular load sheet. Wash your sheets at a regular laundromat rather than a bucket because you will not get the sheets or a blanket clean in a 5 gallon bucket no matter how hard you try. Happy trails and safe travels! Love your vids. BTW my name is Wendy Robertson. For some reason when I selected using my name as my UA-cam name it rejected it as the name was already used multiple times with numbers behind or in front of the name.
Clean 5 gal. bucket with lid. Hole in lid same diameter as the wooden handle on a clean, full sized plunger. A smidge of liquid detergent in bottom. Liquid so it dissolves fast, smidge to facilitate rinsing. The less you put in, the better the outcome. Both detergent and clothes. Clothes in, water in, plunger through lid. Snap lid on. Drive. That evening at camp plunger the bejabbers out of the load. Rinse. Hang to dry. When we road trip up north we only wash underwear and T shirts. The rest wait for a town large enough to support a laundromat. Often a RV campground has laundry facilities up there. Edit to say whoops, should have read the comments before typing. Sorry, didn't mean to jump on your post!
Good move letting her put her clothes in that thing first. If it eats everything at least you still have something. You are right, it sucks. Washboards worked for years, give it a try.
Hope you had them Crocs in sport mode! Never know when your out in the wild when you might need to get moving. Thanks Dustin for another fun Wednesday travel update!
They used to make a kitchen version of these. They held alot more and had more power. When clothes were done you moved them to the spinning drum which was crazy fast. You could wash a blanket but it wouldn't fit in the spinner. As for the one you bought, I think I would opt for the washboard or a rock.😅
For all the years I was on the road nothing beat washing my clothes in the shower. A good smack against the wall to beat the dirt out of really soiled stuff and a good rinsing and hand-wringing solve the problem. That less than, $100 bucks, piece of crap plastic was worth some comedic gold!
for doing larger loads. a rubbermaid tote bin works really well. to reduce water usage. reduce the amount of laundry detergent in the wash. I eventually want to make or get a 12 volt washing machine. I have the idea to use a windshield wiper motor to power an agitator. But it's not on top my immediate list of off grid living needs yet!
If you want to do a real 'Red Green' contraption, take a bucket then add your laundry add water and detergent then use your drill with a cement mixer bit to agitate said laundry. Or, you could rig up a bucket that would seal up and turn sideway and then tumble spin it.🤣
I have the little amazon washing machine, but it is small, I bought enough clothes to last a month then head to the laundromat, their big machines can eat 2 comforters or a months' worth of clothes for $14 the mat does the dryer swap for free while I shop done in 77 mins. Even though the small machine uses .3 kw a load, you need to do a lot of loads. $168 for really clean clothes for a year vs using extra water and hang dry. For anyone going off grid that has the room just get a good top loader you could use a generator for an hour with a normal dryer too if you can't spare the extra 5kw a load.
Use a 5 gallon bucket fill 2/3 of the way, laundry detergent. Put a lid on it and tie it to the bumper. Drive down your bumpy road and 1/2 hr later put in a 5gal bucket with fresh water 1/2.bucket to rinse. I use to clean paint brush and paint rollers that way just going home from job!
A washboard and just a big enough container to use it in sounds like the best bet. Or like some one mentioned, a bucket and plunger is another option. Good luck on which option to use...😅
you are overloading this machine . Bra's , jocks , socks , nickers and alike would be what it was built for . Not having seen the instructions , i can only comment on what I saw . If you don't want it , sent it to me in Australia .. many thanks .
Well that made our day! We had just finished doing our laundry here at the rv park ! While the machine was washing our clothes I was havin a cold brewski ! Cheers guys 🍺
John Steinbeck, in Travels with Charlie, said he put his laundry with soap and water in a small trashcan with a tight fitting lid. He ran a bungee cord through the handles and hung it from the clothes rod in the closet. While he drove down the road the bouncing agitated the laundry. Great book. Have you read it?
Good to know, I almost bought one of those for the camper. There is also those USB powered ultrasonic doohickies - they probably don't work either. One guy had a 5 gallon bucket with a toilet plunger (new) sticking up through the lid - the plunger is used as a churn/agitator. Show us city folk how to us a wash board, please.
You could use it as a spare toilet... Motor sounds like it was struggling.. Get a large tub and drop the prop from your boat motor in it.. it will wash your clothes pretty quick...
Yes! Good video! Bad washer. Maybe you can repurpose the motor for something instead of throwing it away? Also buy liquid detergent perfume free, you can get away with using very little. Nice shorts!
Ah the Laundry blues 💙 😪 😅 ! Gotta say I hate Laundry mat's ! 💡 🤔 on amazon I got a portable side by side Higospro, $158.00 bucks and works like a champ for all my Laundry for a year, just don't overload it but still holds a good load each time . 😀 This was a good show 👏 Interesting what other solutions commented for other than the dreaded board 😂 Aloha buddy 🌴 ⛱️
I like to watch a off grid channel. This guy's wife, uses a bucket. Like the kind you get at Home Depot and a plunger 🪠 and do that for a while. Then put it in another bucket with just plain water. And do that for a while. Then hang out to dry.😊

Lmao! Try a wash BAG... it's like a dry bag, but ribbed for the clothing's pleasure on the inside... you use minimal water for it too. Also... may want to look at biodegradable soap as those pods suck for the environment 😬
My dad lived on a sailboat for 27 years. He used a bucket and a plunger for all those years and swears by it!! Try it😊
I’m guessing Mick knows all about the plunger use.😂
Sounds like it would work great for sure. And I can use the crab bucket ;) hahaha
For some reasonI I just heard, k-os - Crabbuckit start to play in my head..
Im a bucket and hand wash kinda laundry do-er but was always intrigued by these. Thanks for saving me the trouble! (And its important to have multiple uses for one bucket!)
Laundry line hack - thin paracord, fold the line in half and tie in lnots along the length so that the 2 strands lay together. Then you just tuck your clothes into the gap between the lines. Dustin, “Do you think it’s gonna work?”… Emi, without hesitation, “”No..”…. Classic… lol

"Kinda friggin sucks" A definitive review.. 😆

Gotta love the little garden box;s now. She is rubbing off on you, :)
She is definitely helping out loving the content
My wife laughed and said a washboard before we watched the video. As always, excellent work! Best channel on UA-cam!

The wonderwash has really good reviews, cheaper on The Cabin Depot site :)

Yes- Earth Breeze is great, no toxic perfumes and even my husband says they clean really effectively :)
"Think it's going to work?" "No" She said with such conviction. LOL
No faith in me. Hahaha seems she was right
I refer to those types of products as landfill tat. But good effort!
They make a hand operated washer for camping/off grid. But I might agree with you a washboard may work out better. Or do like they do in the western movies where the woman goes to the creek and beats the clothes across a big bolder.

I agree, get an old wash board and a tub, that seemed pretty useless, you would have been done.
Looks interesting, I could see using it for just a few items once in a while, but I loved Emi’s immediate response of “no”.

That's a great idea! And with the way that trailer likely bounces around, it would do very well in there!!!
@justchillinout2002 ya Gentle cycle definitely speed and bump related haha
Use a large dry bag as washing machine! That's how I wash clothing on road trips and on cruise ships.

Yep. Hand wash. Gets your nails nice and clean at the same time

It's the simple things I've wondered about - like laundry? This was so fun I'll watch it again, then share with hubby, who is at work. Safe travels!
Yes for sure! Camped for years and a 5 gal. bucket and a plunger does the trick!
Good move letting her put her clothes in that thing first. If it eats everything at least you still have something. You are right, it sucks. Washboards worked for years, give it a try.

I'll second the 5 gallon bucket and plunger. Also bio safe soap like septic system approved if pouring out to ground or ditch.
I use a Scrubba Wash Bag when I'm camping. Works well with a bit of hand work. Less messy than a typical washboard.
I always used a bucket, lid with a hole and then a plunger. Always worked great
The bucket and plunger idea sound great.

Good luck on which option to use...😅
I had been thinking about getting one of those because we live in an RV. Thank you for saving me the hassle!! Much love to you both!❤❤
Yup, good Ole bucket and plunger. I wonder if they even make a modern version of a washboard.
you are overloading this machine . Bra's , jocks , socks , nickers and alike would be what it was built for . Not having seen the instructions , i can only comment on what I saw . If you don't want it , sent it to me in Australia .. many thanks .
Mop bucket and a toilet plunger! The industrial buckets with the squeeze function. ;)
Well at least it has a drain,,,,🤪
We just seen a hundred bucks go right down it 😳 😫
Well that made our day! We had just finished doing our laundry here at the rv park ! While the machine was washing our clothes I was havin a cold brewski ! Cheers guys 🍺
Bucket and plunger. Works great.
Manual labor powers those ity bity washers best. That washer is best suited to washing a pair of socks as a full load
John Steinbeck, in Travels with Charlie, said he put his laundry with soap and water in a small trashcan with a tight fitting lid. Good old elbow power and washboard make sure it's a glass one they work the best
You could use it as a spare toilet...
Motor sounds like it was struggling..
Get a large tub and drop the prop from your boat motor in it.. it will wash your clothes pretty quick...
Thanks for sharing Emi and Dustin
Yes! Good video! Bad washer. Maybe you can repurpose the motor for something instead of throwing it away?

I think a universal 5 gallon pail and an ultrasonic agitator will be my “washer” of choice.
5 gallon Home Depot bucket and lid - 10 years on the road and not one service call.
That was sketchy from the start. But it make me laught !!!
I like to watch a off grid channel. This guy's wife, uses a bucket. Like the kind you get at Home Depot and a plunger 🪠 and do that for a while. Then put it in another bucket with just plain water. And do that for a while. Then hang out to dry.😊
Sealed tub put near the back of your rig or in the boat.
Drive
Rinse
Repeat
bucket and plunger work great lol
So we're just glossing over the strawberry plants behind you, the garden on the road
Bucket and toilet plunger.
I love getting dual use put of my toilet plunger that way! Sometimes it does stain the laundry though 😅
Seems like a 5 gallon bucket and a toilet plunger would be better///of course you'd have to plunge it by hand but it's simple and would work.
Dustin my man! You have never failed to entertain us. The washing machine failed but you did not fail in giving us a chuckle watching you tried. Hehehe!
Wednesday idea - maybe combine these types of random interesting mini videos with a little trip planning and preview of Saturday's video.
Just got thru watching your whole abandoned places playlist awesome content long time subscriber. Can’t wait for more
Scrubba bag is my move for off-grid cleaning!
laundry detergent sheets would save space and give you options to use a little or full sheet , moncton nb cheap
Dude, check out the Scrubba! It's like a dry bag with a wash board inside. Worked for me on the fishing boat for 5 weeks in AK. Paired well with the Sea to Summit clothesline.
Thank you!
Imma gonna give a like just for the comedic value here. 100% Mick approved.😂🤙
Thank you need to keep an eye open for a laundromat!
I have seen a washer that is worked by a foot petal and it spins and agitates quite well. Can't remember where I saw it (but I am sure I will now receive 100 ads for it on FB).
Hey Dustin maybe you can repurpose that washer as a crab pot hahaha 😆
Thanks for sharing that!!
wilderness laundry I have had luck with a 5 gallon bucket and a Clean toulet pluger !!!!
I bought one of this out of curiosity and I agree: "Kinda friggin sucks". Same conclusion: it would be much better to use a 5gal. bucket and wash by hand, agitate it with a stick or paddle, or something.
Now, this would have been a hilarious video if Mickey reviewed it! lol
Hey Dustin, if only you had a full size "Class A" RV, with a built in Washer & Dryer 🤣🤣
in my travel trailer, I use the mini bathtub, and a scrub board
Less clothes - for sure and dissolve pod in hot water first. To make it liquid.
When I did my laundry off grid I put my clothes in a mesh bag and tied a rope to one end and set them in the rapids lol
Good to know,a good idea just hard to make practical for boon docking nomadic life
That is so much work for such little clothing. Use a dang washboard and bio soap in the river!
National washing machine Wednesday
I think a bucket and a cordless drill with a paint stirrer (or a homemade agitator blade) would probably do a better job. OR soak in a soapy bucket of water and then throw clothes in a crab trap and tow behind boat to rinse. Maybe…
Hi Dustin. Was that Sasquatch peeing out the window of the rig? Good flow!!!! ha ha ha ha ha. KEN W Lake
Junk !!🤔
Just what the world doesn't have enough of. 🙄
Bros., get the 8L Home Depot bucket and a lid. It'll rake a little muscle, but that's pretty much a manual portable washing machine for under ten bucks all in.
That's a cute little toy for a kid
I would ditch the portable washing machine. Surely there's better.
Only good for a couple pairs of socks definitely not good for t-shirts they overload it. Bucket & Plunger is the only way to go
Lmao! Try a wash BAG... it's like a dry bag, but ribbed for the clothing's pleasure on the inside... you use minimal water for it too. Also... may want to look at biodegradable soap as those pods suck for the environment 😬
Failed as a washing machine but could work as a portable toilet.
A collapsable toilet 😂🤣
