Castile soap is low sudsing and vinegar in rinse water softens & removes soap. Same principle as washers without agitators.

I have a 5 gallon bucket and an Amish washer...one of those things that looks like a plunger full of holes. I live in a small apartment and don't like the laundromat in my building so I do all my washing in the bathroom. I also have a clothes drying rack and just hang all my clothes in e bathroom. I'm 72 and it is great exercise for me and saves money. With the coin shortage it works for me.

I was wanting one of these for years. Now that my regular wash machine has been giving me issues, I had the perfect excuse to buy one. Love it.

i have read stories over the years about navy personnel washing their laundry behind small boats. does a great job with the agitation

I am a Navy veteran and spent much time aboard ship at sea and many small boats and I can vouch for what you say. The only catch is that the water you are operating in must be clear and clean, otherwise it doesn't get them clean.

I remember watching the colony they made a washing machine outta a 55gal on a bicycle. This is a lot smaller and way more portable

If you put some white vinegar, some bicarb and some detergent in a bathtub and cover it with water, let it soak for 3 hours and it comes out better than the washing machine

Using our on-grid equipment, we've switched from dryer sheets to white vinegar as our fabric softener. Baking Soda and white vinegar both have a lot of cleaning power and a 1,001 uses. If possible, use the mentioned products in a laundry sink, along with a washboard is our choice of backup / off-grid laundry options. Much easier on my back than a bathtub. Yet, the tub is a good option when washing things that don't fit a laundry sink. Some types of bedding, for example.

I wonder if after you drain could you put the lid back on and spin it more and maybe draw more water out that way. oops I posted too soon. You addressed that.

That is absolutely awesome! Where I live, there are always problems with the water drainage, and this sure beats the 5 gallon bucket with a plunger hack. So glad you showed this, it's the next thing on my list! Stay safe out there, and God bless!

I like it! In grad school I washed my clothes in the bathtub with a plunger. It worked great for clothes. I had a laundry line that ran the length of the tub for drying. I took towels and sheets to the laundromat.

British Troops used Small Portable Cement Mixers In some FOB/PB locations in Afghanistan to wash clothes - Pretty much the same system of a Washing Machine: Add water from Bottles of water that gets warm/hot as standard in the Afghan Heat, Dhobi Dust, Turn On and Wash away! 👍🏼👍🏼🤣

I live in a four plex and our washer broke down. The landlord had to bring us a new one. I purchased one of these for prepper use. I used it until our new washer hot here. I used some towels and wrung out the clothing. Our dryer was okay so I used it. I did a little UA-cam video on it too. I like it alot!

A person with mechanical aptitude could make one out of PVC and a big jug. I use a plunger and sit in the shower on a shower chair, and plunge in a 5 gal bucket or plastic dishpan. The rinse cycle is the shower head in the bucket or pan while I plunge. My ideal man powered machine would be with a bike geared to rotate a washer in lieu of motor turning the belts. Unfortunately can't have one where I am now.

These have a difficult time doing/fitting jeans. I gave up on using them for any pants. The small size is really my only big complaint with them. I do like the new drain, tho.

A FWIW...... This may be OK for a few pieces of clothing, maybe underwear, socks, a couple of shirts, as you demonstrated. However, doesn't appear to be big enough to wash bedding, work uniforms, bath robes & towels and so on. Can't see anyone, who, routinely has to do the full range range of laundry, nor the time needed to do so many small batches when washing what will fit, in it. Especially when there's a family of 3+ people. While there are many options, I prefer something similar to what my mother did on our PRE-grid farm. She used a washboard, wash tubs and a castiron washpot to heat water & to boil applicable items. Instead of galvanized washtubs, I prefer a utility/laundry sink and a washboard. (Still have her wash tubs, washpot and flatirons.)
Again, FWIW.... I have a single bowl utility sink in our laundry room and a double bowl version on our back porch. Two bowls makes washing and rinsing a whole lot easier. A single or double bowl version can be setup anywhere that a garden hose will reach and/or where a Radio Flyer style wagon with 2 5-gallon buckets can be pulled. With applicable adapters, a Y washing machine hose or 2 single washing machine hoses can be connected to a garden hose. Drain can be as simple as 1 or 2 5 gallon buckets or using traditional plumbing fittings to empty into a gray water drain or a sump pump drain hose.
I have 2 full size washboards, a glass version ordered from Columbus Washboard Co and a metal one purchased from a farm/feed/seed store many years ago. Also have the size that fits a 5 gal plastic bucket. Don't remember the source as it was purchased in 1984, when we bought a home with a utility/room.
Just did a quick check.... Washboards for sale for around $25 and up. Utility sink around $60-$70 and up, before plumbing costs.
As a part of our setup, if/when the grid goes down, also have a goodly supply of laundry soap bars, white vinegar (alternative to fabric softener sheets that we've already quit using), a reel clothes line for our back porch (use it now for anything I don't want in our electric dryer), a goodly supply of clothes pins, and a clothes pin bag.
As each person's circumstances are different, I'm sure this little hand cranked washer would be the ideal solution for some folks. Definitely a good-to-know-about, so each can choose what will work best for them. Thanks, muchly, for sharing this option.
