$1 LED vs $10 LED... Which Is Better?!!

  • Here's The ONLY AUTOMOTIVE LED WORTH BUYING!!
In this video I test the difference between cheap and expensive automotive LEDs. For the cheap LEDs we're talking roughly $1 a piece and the expensive, the Sylvania ZEVO 194, is roughly $10 a piece. I've used a few different 'cheap' LEDs in my vehicles over the years and one thing I find in common with nearly all of them is the lack of any kind of heat sink. In my opinion, the biggest problem with LEDs is heat and these Sylvania ZEVO brand LEDs, I think, are the perfect light although a little expensive.

I would use both. Use the cheap ones where you don’t need constant power to them. Doors etc. the ones where you need constant light (license plate lights, 4 wheel drive selector.) I would go with the zevo

At a dollar a piece, even if I change them every year, that means I have enough lights for ten years for the same price of two off the most expensive one. I am for the cheap one because, I won’t have to fight for replacement!

Depending on the location of said light it may not be so cheap. If it takes 2 hours to change it every year??? 2 hrs of my time is worth way more than $9 and if the $10 light lasts 10 years youve saved half a work week replacing bulbs

The cheap LEDs have a heatsink. It's the core and the holes. The dome on the ZEVO is like a gel in front of a strobe, it's to correct the light to 6000K and diffuse.

Dude, you should have put the Sylvania bulb on one side and the cheap bulb on the other side, that way the bulbs would get the same amount of run time and your test would be more accurate. Unless you hooked up an hour meter to each truck.
    Keep up the good work.

If you find a 14V power supply and perhaps some T10 fixtures to put them in, you could test them by keeping them turned on 24/7. Even if you normally drive multiple hours a day that would shorten your three month test into weeks or perhapa days.

Really liking the LED series 👌 I have a 96' c1500 suburban, two-wheel, 5.7, 350. picked it up a year ago and been following your channel doing some repairs and doing some laughing with you. Unfortunately because it's not four-wheel drive it won't be the overland rig yours has the potential to be, but I like to carry my three kids and feel confident on some rough roads LOL. really curious how your rough countries are doing since you've decided to settle on the Bilstein suspension system. I was going to say the same thing, because it is. A lot of circuit boards, such as computer motherboards, have a layer of copper throughout the board to help dissipate heat. He also seems to be confused about what solid state electronics are, both the failed LEDs and the new cheap LEDs are solid state, the incandescent bulb is not.

I've been using those same Sylvania LED 168/194 bulbs in license plate and front and rear marker lights on several cars, and some of those bulbs getting reused on different cars over the years. They really are quality bulbs. My only complaint is that they are very directional with the light output due to the design of the bulb, and you would have to check how the socket positions in the housing... and in some cases the cheap bulb might have the desired effect whereas the Sylvania bulbs don't shine to the sides.

    • @1RoadGarage

Only option I had when doing this were the cheap amazon bulbs and they’ve lasted 2 years being on all the time before they started flickering. I just replaced all 4 bulbs with the solid state style and they do seem brighter.

The heat sink on cheap LEDs is the fiberglass board there mounted on. Along with copper terminals. I prefer the Sylvania LEDs for license plate where moisture and temperature variations are more present. The cheaper board style LEDs have come a long way and they are decent design, those are best used for indoor cab lighting. IMO Good vid.

Best 194/168/T10 bulbs are the Phillips bulbs. Tried all three. The phillips is closer to white. The cheap are blue white and flickered after a month of driving and the Sylvania brand is good but it's a warmer white. Had the Phillips for almost a year and made 3 trips across the country mostly at night and they have yet to flicker.

I sent you a text on your video I just saw about See led lights 194. My first upgrade was the lower priced Sylvania led bulb I got at Walmart. But then I switched to the Zevo Super bright Leds mainly because of the lifetime warranty. As I told you, I have a 2000 Toyota Camry LE. I will tell you I've had Zevo for over a year now there still going. I just wish Sylvania would make led headlights because of laws. My flasher is made for both led and incandescent bulbs. My truck light is a 194 I would like for it to be brighter. But felt in the is black. In my high mount I use a red 194 Sylvania zevo very bright. In my dashboard is where I worry. What do you think of using "plasma" brake lights? They appear much brighter than any LED lights I've seen. Personally I have found that the Sylvania Zevo bulbs work very well and give long service. The cheaper LEDs generally have not lasted as long in my car, I do believe it's because they don't have a heating. I converted my '08 Kia Spectra to all Sylvania LEDs and looks great as well as much less draw on the battery/alternator.

I’m about to give up in LED’s in my ‘03 Tahoe. Changed out the rear lights to LED only to be hit with the hyperflash issue. Fixed that by installing a Novita LM487 Flasher unit only to discover that now my cruise control isn’t working. Apparently the cruise monitors resistance to the brake lights to determine when you’ve hit the brake and turn off CC. Since the LED’s don’t have the resistance of a standard bulb the CC thinks the brake has been pressed and CC won’t even activate. Haven’t found a fix for his yet. Think I’m going to just replace the brake light LED’s with the old bulbs and see if that works.

Just thought I'd update this in case anyone else runs into it. I went ahead and replaced the LED's in my brake lights with standard 3157 bulbs and now my cruise control is working again. So... I'm running LED's in the taillights, backup lights, and license plate lights, and standard bulbs in the brake lights. In this configurations (and with the Novita unit installed) everything is working and I do not have the hyperflash issue. Guess I'll just stick with this for now.

I’m telling u sir. U should try another set of Sylvania ZEVO Amber turn signals, for both front, and rear. And also ur rear zevo brake lights. I have them on my 2015 lifted Scion xB. I have sylvania zevo T10 license plate lights and they are sharp bright krisp white light.
And I also have a 7443R sylvania zevo red brake light. Just a couple hairs brighter then they setup for DRL. And when u bright it shines up very nice and very bright. A proper brightness of led that it looks like it came as a factory. Makin our vehicle look premium.
As for the turn signal. I would highly recommend for Novita led flasher relay. Instead of messing with load equalizer resistor to splice the wires. It works but I would just get the plug and play relay.
Makes ur vehicle look more premium. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

Do a comparison for time with a cheap one on the left side and the more expensive one on the right. Do both vehicles the same way and then you will have an equal time test.

Part of the reason that the cheap one is brighter is because it has no diffuser. The Sylvania bulb does. It ends up having a better overall scatter in the housing, even if it sacrifices a bit of brightness. Light diffusion is always a good thing in those kinds of housings.

Quick Tip If you drink and drive often and want to upgrade your tag light, brake light, or any other signal light it would be best to spend the extra money on an led that offers a lifetime warranty such as Sylvania.

I have some of those sealight bulbs in the license plate location on my 97 k1500 it's been about 3 months now and still no issues
For the Sylvania bulbs they look like good quality but I feel like your paying more for the name because $10 seems too much for just 2 bulbs

Hello, how have your Sealight bulbs held up in the license plate location? In comparison to the Zevo bulbs. I am worried they might overheat and burn out soon! Let me know at your earliest convenience. Thanks...

The Sylvania bulbs are good but there definitely not very expressive compared to other bulbs like GTR's or Morimoto's that are 50 to 60 percent higher. Diode Dynamics is another good company. I took the Sylvania Zevo back up lights out of my car because they didn't give enough light and put in some GTR's that look like head lights coming at you.

Hey man what is your obsession with LED's?
Go out make some content with you using your truck somewhere camping hunting fishing driving down the road , How about some update videos on your electric cooling fans or high powered alternator or???
Do a low budget mod series:
    Window vents
    Fender flares
    Front mount hitch/ winch mount
    Roof rack
    Dual battery install
    Grill swap
    Air bags for towing
This is a list of things that most people would want on their overland rig.

LEDs come from batches which is a hit and miss in production and hopefully sorted for various manufacturers and applications. Quality control is a factor if it should exist. Circuit boards are notorious to fail in many cases and the real culprits. Look into efficacy or IP ratings over time if you can. As a rule of thumb in general.. the life given is a best case scenario ...so what they give divide by 2 as more realistic estimate. You may want to get a light meter at some point... a cheap one for about $30 is fine. Annnd I was a lighting designer so...

@1ROAD You should also try the Sylvania - ZEVO amber for turn signals both front and rear, and get two pairs of sylvania - equalizer resistor to splice the wires. And it will make it look more krisp and more modern in ur older GMC/Chevy SUV’s u have.
That would be awesome to see
And also try the Sylvania - Zevo red brake light bulbs.
I have them recently on my 2015 lifted Scion xB. They are few hairs brighter than oem incandescent bulbs. I want to get the best. Brightest led bulbs from GTR Lighting - armor series that makes 700 lumens. And it’s more usable and very noticeable light output.
But for now, I have the Sylvania - ZEVO RED 7443, and they are nicer and brighter and much much more red desirable color than ever.
I’m very happy the results is.

Reason why cheap led bulbs die - is manufacturer make them work 200-300% brighter than those led chips should be. So you can manage the current that drives the led chip, you can run them in smaller A and get them running cooler and make them last as long as they theoretically can. It's cheap to do that.

Jimmy, when you're doing a close up of a small item, like at 4:20, could you rest your hand on the table? You emphasise with your hands and with each emphasis, you move your hand, which is distracting. Just steady your hand, that's holding the bulb, on the table. Thanks.

To be fair, I believe to some extent all LEDs will be hit or miss what I think really counts is like discussed in the video is location your using the bulb, and I also think quality of the housing the bulb is placed would be key as well, we all know the tight fit the stock housings and or locations have but when we swap any of the stock housings (headlights, taillights,) and then plug in an led and twist it into the new housings that fit may not be as tight resulting in that bulb not doing as well as it could have. I would say to test,.... And I know most of us wouldn't want to but
Two different bulbs..... Same location on the same truck.... That way both bulbs get the same time of operation
