Hey Jimmy, first of all I want to thank you for your time, effort and sharing this information with us. Have you tried to diagnose and repair any of the failed LEDs? I'm not talking about the obvious burned out ones but the ones that flicker, maybe just a bad solder joint or broken wire? Here's an idea, since you probably have quite a few of the cheaper ones as well as probably the mid priced ones what if you were to connect them to a 12-volt power source such as an old computer power supply and let them run for a week which would be over 10,000 miles at 65mph. Or just leave them connected until they burn out and see how long they last. I may do it myself, if I do I'll comment here. I have plenty of power supplies (computer technician) but not a variety of LEDs. Just curious. Thanks again for sharing.

Your channel is a great source of knowledge. Here in Europe, brands like sylvania are not very popular but we have osram, philips and other more expenisive but good quality bulbs. Ive been using one set of osram w5w led bulbs as front position lights for about 8 years now. No issues at all. Still work just as fine as new ones. Best regards.

Jimmy, I have to disagree why the LEDs fail. It’s not because of heat. These lights don’t get near as hot as the old incandescent ones. You can put your finger to the surface of the Map LEDs and not feel anything.
The issue is the circuit design and LED quality. The cheap LEDs have poor or non-existent current limiting circuits.
For an LED to operate properly, it needs a constant voltage and current.
Typically LEDs only need 3-5 Volts to light up. Battery voltages are usually 12+ Volts. So they put a lot of LEDs in series to divide that 12V among each LED
Not all LEDs are perfect and some draw more slightly more power than others. When one LED wears out, more power goes through the remaining ones and burns them out faster.
The quality LEDs have the proper circuits that power each LED independently and can adjust to the changing 12-14V range.
That’s why OEM LED tail lights in modern cars don’t fail as often.

For my OBS, I went the expensive route from the get go, but i did a bit of research beforehand on the expensive options, i picked up sylvana bulbs all around but with more diodes, and the single map light bulbs for the doors, so far, almost two years in, im pleased with the abuse and how long they have lasted, i have cheap ones by my feet only because they are easy to replace but other than that, they have done wonders and without issue, for the center bulbs i wanted more direct light from the diode and decided to sand open the plastic, since the light cover is meant to disperse light already, and it seems to be a good happy medium for me. to this day, the same Auxbeam headlights you have are kicking shadows to the curb, and those where a good price, a little on the high side but after taking performance into consideration I'm happy

I agree with you . Same concern I heard from many other electricians too. But my point is how often do we use dome or map light ? These lights are not like car head lights that we use everyday few hours. Average drivers use may be 5-10 minutes per day or may be less. With that limited use I don't think led can get heated that fast.

I got GZTC LED for 569 style (4 for $8) in my 2006 Silverado, works great, nice and bright (600 lumens), and works well with the dimming after door is closed with no flickering. Been in there for a year now with no problems.

  • @JayFochs1337
    @JayFochs1337 4 роки тому +2

Valid point, especially with heat, but imho, with the cheap ones of quantity/heat of led is the issue, begs the question if you remove a few leds off the cheap ones if they'll last longer (got the electrical know how to do so) also, most leds aren't too great with dimming, so that may also be a small part of your issue. But i usually stick to mid-high value for bulbs myself as well.

Haha I wish I had seen this video 2 years ago. I went through a similar experience buying the ebay 14 dollar led set. The license plate lights gave out one by one switching to strobe mode after being a giant pita to install for my particular car. I arrived at the same conclusion you did and switched to the sylvania ones despite the cost and never regretted it. My intermittent cheap ones though in the rest of the car have been going strong. I believe your particular front housing with 3 lights and packed cheapy leds is what did yours in so quickly

Half my car is Sylvania Zevo, the other half are cheepo led's.
I use the cheepos because, I tried the Zevos in certain locations, and sometimes they don't work quite rights due to the type, or shape of the reflector housing, or they're just not bright enough compared to the cheepos.

I got lucky, I bought a set of led bulbs for my entire 04 tahoe for like 6 or 7 dollars when I first bought it 3 years ago. They all still work, and are plenty bright for me. and they are designed the same way as the ones you replaced here. As far as I can tell, you can still get a very good product in most things for cheap, if you know where to look and do enough research. but sometimes it just boils down to luck.

I've bought probably 5 sets of cheap leds of Amazon and they all burn out at about the time. I buy the like $20 set of lights for the whole truck when one burns out or starts to flicker because I knew all the rest of the bulbs were about to start acting up. I've been changing everything over to sylvania aswell recently took about $250-$275 for every light minus resistors that also includes cheap "I know it's like I haven't learnd" Amazon led high beam, low beam, and fog lights. Also made sure the keep the recipe's for the bulbs from the parts house because they come with a lifetime warranty if you have proof of purchase.

Around 10 years ago I replaced all bulbs except the cluster and ac in my 90 c1500 with LEDs at $20-$25 per 2 pack. Also used an electronic flasher for the signals to prevent hyper-flash. Within 6 months they began to fail and by the next year all had been replaced again with incandescent.
I loved them when they worked properly and I realize LEDs have come a long way in recent years, but for now I'm sticking to incandescent and hid's.

Just wanted to give you a heads up. Sylvania is coming out with led headlights. I talked a lady from the company. She said the led headlights maybe out this Fall or maybe next Spring 2022. I hope they come out this Fall 2021. Most of my leds are Sylvania Zevo Super Bright Leds. They're the expensive ones but they're worth it. Currently my led headlights are Oracle Lighting V Series they're ok but not as bright as my other ones. But they're street legal so the company says. Sylvania does make a fog light led bulb. But this fog led bulb doesn't work in my 2000 Toyota Camry LE. At present I don't know what to get for my dashboard, console, glove box, and the light in heat and AC department. It takes 194's and 74's led bulb. I just don't know what brand to get. Plus they have to be dimmable as well. Any suggestions on brands to buy? Thanks much for your videos watch them all the time.

I have a 2011 dodge ram and put them in the dome and rear seat light even under the dash as well. just like the ones you first showed. They are never on long enough to get hot enough to melt anything. I do not use them on my licence plate light. Why would you want that brighter to begin with?

They don't work in the door markers either. Trouble is the more expensive ones don't fit well in the bulb socket. They're usually bigger than the hole the bulb fits in. Unfortunately LEDs aren't new technology. They started coming out in the late 90s early 2000s. Even though the older ones are little bigger and bulkier, they never draw as much as the new style does and never heated up. The more compact they made them and the more people wanted them, the shittier the quality and cheaper they got.

China is really smart in realizing they can sell Americans most anything providing it's cheap. We'll just buy another one with the thought process, hey it's cheap. Reasons to move away from buying cheap, low quality products from China. whenever possible.

      It’s sylvania zevo. Not Philips.
Philips makes ultinon. And sylvania makes zevo.
Both look exaclty the same but names are different.

leds shouldn't be so expensive, it's not like it's a new technology. anywho, I've been running the cheap leds on a chip for 10 yrs or so, I've even plucked them out of vehicles when I sold them and put them in my replacement hoopties.

There's better cheap leds on AliExpress, better constructed and with awesome built-in heat sinks, just take 30 minutes and search properly. I've using it for years and none have failed me. Chinese copy everything, they've copy cree and csp chips quite successfully, just search it thoroughly.

Cheap LEDs suck. Actually, I find most LEDs suck because they are way to bright. The morons that replace their non-LED headlamps with LEDs deserve a special place in hell for blinding on coming drivers. If I want brighter light, I just get the Sylvania Ultra Star brand of bulbs.

    • @toyotabrony
      @toyotabrony Рік тому

1: that’s only when they didn’t do their own research to find the right type of led bulbs that matches the specs of the halogen, such as beam pattern, the right size, the right type of led chips. If it’s larger than the halogen. Those are bad.
2: I use to run sylvania - silverstar ultra and man they were great. But I moved on after 2 months for led because I want brighter lights.
So I went Lasfit - LD Plus switchback.
      6000k and 3000k.
Buying cheap LED’s, especially for low and high beams will not last. Buying a reputable brand are most appropriate thing to buy.

@1ROAD. If u truly curious and worry about the LED’s that will not last as u hoped for. We’ll stick to the most reputable brand that works, and u wonMt have to deal with it.
Sylvania zevo, that has a metal piece that acts as a heatsink, and with two simple led chips. It’s better than multiple stacks of diodes of led with very small or no heatsink at all is no good.
Now if u want even better or the best of the best, look up xenon depot. They have even higher quality led bulbs that can dissipate the heat much faster.
Instead of metal to dissipate the heat, they have full ceramic bulb that can dissipate the heat much faster.
Morimoto have also T10 that’s called hybrid.
The top it has a lens, the middle is a rings around that’s a heatsink, and the bottom of the base is a ceramic body. Hence why they call it a hybrid. And it doubles the heat much much more technicality efficient bulbs that they are worth to buy. They maybe worth $5-$7 more than what u pay the best sylvania led bulbs. But the xenon depot, and morimoto have an incredible led bulbs that u can imagine.
    What’s the big difference?
The brightness. All three of sylvania, xenon depot, and morimoto have a matching design. But the big difference is the brightness.
Sylvania zevo T10 makes 68 lumens.
While xenon depot makes 74 lumens.
But the morimoto hybrid T10, makes an amazing 174 lumens. That’s super bright.
So go check those out and see if u worry about the sylvania might give up on u. But they will not. As long as they have a metal piece for heatsink, u are good.
