    Jeremy missed it completely..
One of Glass' final lines is about how this isn't the climax/showdown, it's actually the origin story.
This isn't the main character dying in a pathetic way, this is the main character's dad being shot in a dirty alleyway. Glass, Horde, and Overseer are the martyrs that inspire and drive an upcoming world of heroes and villains. This is the origin of supers, and new heroes seeing the clover society drown one of their own in a puddle will put them on guard and position them in opposition to that shady group.
That's the Shayamalan twist. You thought this was a full superhero arc. But it didn't end like one because it was actually the opening incident before the story really begins. Normally 3 full movies aren't devoted to such a small part of a story. This microscope view of things is what made this story different.

    • @DJNiems
      @DJNiems 5 років тому +41

So you're saying that there's only a payoff if there is some continuation of the story from here? Further films? Because if not, then it is kind of a waste. I've seen plenty of other superhero origin stories that have left me feeling much more fulfilled. I don't see how "being different" means I must forfeit that feeling. Nothing about it made me feel "oh man, if I were an enhanced, watching those leaked videos, I'd have a rush of intent; a burst of courage to come out." - NO! I'd see that as "Damn, I better keep my head down otherwise I'll be taken out like a chump". There isn't enough context for a first-time-leaked-footage-viewer to suddenly "make a change". What emotional connection do they have to the relationship that those three had together? The meaning or purpose of the whole encounter? Further from anything other than "oh it's just revenge + curiosity". If anything, it would make me feel less inclined to believe in my abilities. You think a bunch of said enhanceds would suddenly start a subreddit in order to come together? After that footage? Nah. They saw something spectacular, sure. Something confirmational, yes. But ultimately, smothered in an instant by some faceless goons - exactly the kind of thing such people would've been fearing their entire lives in secrecy anyway.

If David Dunn couldn't take showers, he and his wife would have thought he was different way earlier. However, she shows no indication that he was weird physically at all, especially in the scene when trying to recall if he ever got sick. Plus, David never thought his behavior around water was that weird until glass commented on him choking on it more easily, nothing to do with feeling weak when it touches him.

Well they explain why the secret organization didn't show up in Unbreakable.
They only neutralize threats when 2 super humans are clashing. After Glass was imprisoned in Unbreakable, Dunn was by himself. She left Dunn alone because he was the only super person in his region after that.
The whole point of the organization is to stop the escalation of super human powers. It seems like both the organization and Mr Glass know that the world really does reflect the themes of comic books. In comics, the heroes get stronger, but so do the villains. It gets absolutely out or control. They mention that part in the movie. The girl from Split says that Superman, in his original form, couldn't fly. He could just jump really high. Eventually, he becomes Earth destroyingly powerful.
My only problem is that they should've showed Dunn and The Horde get stronger, or learn new abilities as they fought, to really drive that idea home.

I accepted David Dunn’s death, even though it wasn’t a blaze of glory. Sometimes that’s just how our hero’s go out. That being said, it was still really tough seeing it and I fully understand why people feel anger over it. He deserved to be celebrated, or credited, but we didn’t really get that. People just continued believing that he was a myth, no matter how many lives he saved. (Until he was already dead and the video evidence came out, anyways)
Also Jeremy, I just wanted to say, the reason the girl from split was in this is because much like how Elijah is the opposite of David, she is the opposite of the beast. Both faced similar upbringing of physical abuse but took different paths to cope. The difference is that she stayed whole and overcame, while Kevin krumb split into different people. That’s why she became the beasts literal kryptonite. After all, they all had a weakness.

He also talked about coming books being some sort of a truthteller to society about superheroes existing. That's basically the premise of Glass I think. Glass is his movie, he created Dunn and The Horde, and he's the mastermind. Glass, in my opinion is not a sequel buh it's all one continual story. Also, a Superheroey showdown at a tower actually would make zero sense to a movie set in realism. Yes, it could have worked buh I like the direction it went. It's ballsy, someone said it's an origin story for basically every single superhero movie. That's pretty epic.

This movie is not an origin story to every super hero movie. There is absolutely no basis for this at all lol. David Dunn in unbreakable said he swallowed water when he was dunked under and almost drowned. He brought that up because that was the only time he had ever been hurt in his entire life. Dunn and The Horde fighting at a tower would still be realistic. You act as if people cant fight at a tower. It wouldve made for a better ending than a dumb ass organization that shows up to keep super heroes under wraps. Like where the fuck were they when David Dunn survived that train crash without a scratch on him?

Abe Yeah but since the organization wasn’t a problem until the very last minutes it’s pretty unfulfilling resolution.
Also this true hero killed a lot of people. I like that in the end the villain got what he wanted and “he was right” in a way even though his methods are wrong ... But the reason a true hero like Dunn was trying to stop him in the first place was because he is a freaking mass murderer.
And as Jeremy points out, the movie never addresses this as it should. They have so little time together it’s frustrating.

Personally, the biggest problem with black clover group was that their victory was 110% circumstantial. You mean to tell me that this org that has been around for 10,000 years was planning to kill the beast during the 30 seconds anya taylor joy turned the beast weak AND that the organization was planning to use the pothole in the parking lot against David Dunn?! It's highly improbable that the organization had a good plan to dispose of the main characters, cause they only showed up with guns, and if the movie didn't play out like a bootleg version of the Final Destination films then there was no way this organization "that has been around for 10,000 years" was going to win, and it makes no sense how they could possibly be consistent in beating previous super powered people. I can't remember who said it, but one of the other youtube reviewers said it best when he said "This is the most M Night Shyamalan ever."

What did they think they were going to do? They (clover) didn't have a good contingency plan for if the guys escaped, but the movie tells you these guys have been dealing with mutants for thousands of years. So was this the first time mutants ever escaped? An organization that has been dealing with mutants for years should have something up their sleeve other than guns, cause they already knew that bullets wasn't either of their weaknesses; which is why I think the clover reveal wasn't nearly as effective as Shyamalan wants it to be. Plus they should've just used the mind wipe thing in the first place and called it a day. :p

About water making him weak, I didn't take it that way from Unbreakable. From what they showed, his weakness was simply that he could drown. I mean, if water made him weak, when he fought that guy at the end of Unbreakable to free those kids, he would have gotten owned. Why would he have gotten owned? He was already wet before he fought the dude, because it was raining outside. To top it off, once the kids help him out of the pool, he goes back inside (after being submerged in the pool and being out in the rain) and chokes the guy out. If water made him weak simply by touching him, he would've been done for. Glass literally made it seem like water was his kryptonite. Like, I understand he was kinda choking at the end, however, compared to how Unbreakable ended with him also gagging, why in Glass does he all of a sudden not have his strength? It was a regular joe schmo holding him in a puddle that was a few inches deep. Dude should have been able to just simply do a push up and hold himself up. I think M. Night kinda botched how he made the character look in Unbreakable, if indeed water simply touching him makes him weak. That, or he simply forgot how he made the character, and screwed the pooch in Glass.

Also, I thought the ending could have been way better. I was at first thinking that no way David Dunn was going to die. Then, when he did, I thought about Mr. Glass saying to his mom that "This isn't a limited addition. It's an origin story.", and immediately I thought "Oh shit, because the one girl held the split guy in her arms as he was dying and David Dunn's kid was there when he died, that those two would have powers that were buried within them unlock because of the trauma they just went through, and they'd unleash hell on those other guys.". Think about it, it would literally show the origins on how their powers were "unlocked". Sadly, I was wrong, and disappointed by it.

About the brains power over the body. I think that only pertains to certain individuals, like Kevin Crumb. He obtained his powers by going through trauma all throughout his child hood, and because of that, his body coped by making all these personalities (as is true when people in real life go through trauma as a kid growing up). I have watched interviews and vlogs with actual people that have multiple personalities, and they say for each personality, a different traumatic event in their lives is what made each specific one. Each one is made specifically to cope with whatever they were encountering at that time. For David Dunn, he was just born with the strength and not being able to be harmed/get sick. I think with David Dunn his strength and being immune to getting hurt (besides water) was something he never thought of, and that's why as a kid he wasn't trying to do crazy acts of strength and what not. When he was a kid, the only thing he encountered was finding out he can drown. That was purely a coincidence, in my eyes, and it wasn't a factor of his powers manifesting. I think it was just a matter of him actually needing the strength, and finding out at that time that he could do crazy acts of strength.

Now, as far as the girl not being needed in the movie. I don't think that's true. When Kevin Crumb is The Beast, he is essentially bullet proof. His skin hardens, and he gets additional strength. That's why the shotgun blast to the chest area in Split didn't penetrate his skin. She was needed because other than those flashing lights, she was the only thing that could get him to change from The Beast and into another personality. Basically, when he's The Beast, his skin becomes like a bullet proof vest. He'll take the impact, it'll cause him some pain and bruising, however, it won't penetrate his skin.

As far as the ending with the video going viral and you thinking that'll be that, and people with just move on. That's not necessarily true, either. You see, the world knew who Kevin Crumb, David Dunn, and Elijah Price were BEFORE seeing the video of them displaying super human abilities. Elijah was known for being in the psych ward for causing all of those huge events that killed tons of people, Kevin Crumb was known for being in that psych ward for kidnapping many people over a period of time and killing them, and David Dunn was known as "The Overseer" and saving countless people all over the city. That's why at the end when they were announcing the video on the news cast, they talked about the psych ward and how the people involved were those specific people that everyone had already heard about. By them already being established as REAL people, when everyone watched it, they would be like "OMG, it's true!!!!". Especially if now, all of a sudden, those people are actually dead. Like, why make a fake video to go viral, if those people are actually dead? It gives validity to their powers actually being real, and the fact that people were trying to stop them from being known.

All in all, I think the movie was OK. I'd give it somewhere between a 6-7 out of 10. The ending did irritate me, especially Dunn simply being held in a couple of inches of water by a dude with no powers. The Beast/Kevin Crumb being killed in the manner he was, I'm OK with that. But, a guy who has super strength, the only thing that can kill him is water, and they made it to like the water simply touching him turned him into having no strength at all. That was pretty stupid. I would've been fine if they had like 4 guys bum rush him while he was choking, wrap him in a tarp so he couldn't move, and water board him. That would've been more believable. But, alas, some nothing guy just had to barely hold his face in 2 inches of water. The only other down side to the movie was that it was too long. They needed to either pack more interesting and detailed filler into the middle of the movie, or, cut it down by about 30 minutes.

Wow, you clearly had pre-consumption's with this film Jeremy. I literally was down on it after seeing early reviews, went in and thought this was M.Night's best film since unbreakable. He tied everything together even tied his cameo from unbreakable in this at Dunn security. I thought Kevin background got explained more, David's relationship with this son, and that he seems to at his age be going out still doing the hero thing in my opinion to get over the death of this wife.
Elija just wanted to let the world know, and honestly it's hinted at early on he had suspicions of this place and the other patients. As in the other patients other than himself, dunn and kevin. They tied kevin's relationship with the girl from split up well, they tied together elija's mother. i felt this film was hyped too much because of how struck you and everyone else was with split. I think that the pre conception that split was tied to unbreakable made people want something that was as spell binding and revolutionary as unbreakable was when it hit cinema's.
I felt though this could have been unbreakable 2, was a good way to give us more of the things that we loved out of both those movies and give a conclusion that was very thought provoking just like the ending to each split, and unbreakable.
Bringing together many themes was what I got out of it. Maybe the clover society stuff didn't land as well, but i felt how everyone died was so true to everything. David went out still saving people, Kevin didn't die alone, he had someone who cared for him by his side, and the hoard didn't hide him from the light. Elija wanted to prove to the world in a good guy way that they exist.
I thought david dying in a small pool of water came full circle to unbreakable, and especially when he grabbed her hand. He was reassured before he died he was who he was.
I disagree with you and every other critic who totally in all honesty got this movie wrong. And I THINK it';s because you were expecting another unbreakable or split in how it kept us guessing in what the movie was about. But we knew from the get go what it was about, but what we got was another Elija pulling us along and just like M.night in Unbreakable giving us hints throughout of Elija's motives and plan that to our surprise reveal the truth.

Personally, I found the direction it took to be fascinating. When people argue that this isn't Glass' movie, I think it really is because his actions are what define the movie and its direction: heading towards the final showdown and revelation. I understand why some would be disappointed with the deaths of these characters. But not only did it blow any expectations out of the water, but it worked for the story Shyamalan was trying to tell. Society shuns those with faith, belief in something more than what science can tell us, demonstrated in their superhero abilities. This is personified in Sarah Paulson's psychiatrist. Glass makes the ultimate sacrifice for himself, Kevin and David, so that the world can see the injustice and be inspired once more to accept faith and believe in something beyond the real that we exist in. It's an optimistic ending for sure, but one shrouded in the sudden shock of what's just happened. A second viewing is essential I feel.

In terms of the Water being Dunn's Kryptonite, I interpreted it as the water sprinklers spray directly at his face with a really high pressure (the high pressure/15000 gallons thing was mentioned), which gives Dunn the _illusion_ of drowning. In other words, his "weakness" is all in his head, and this is pretty consistent with Unbreakable.

The way I remember it from Unbreakable, water does sort of impede his functionality. Think of it this way, does it make sense that a superhero's weakness is drowning? I don't think so, that's too specific. On the other hand, saying water in general is his weakness makes sense. I assumed the pool almost killed him because he was in a large pool of water. Also, his rain slicker is a reference to his weakness, it's his shield against water. It would have no symbolic value against drowning.

  • @resilientpictures9990
    @resilientpictures9990 5 років тому +23

I to felt he was struggling to create an ending that could be effective, ending on a secret organisation.
Here's an ending that would have maintained the story through line and still kept the same twist:
During act 2, as the doctor is trying to convince them all they have no super powers, she puts them all bar glass through a series of tests such as smash this rock, climb this wall, etc. Dunn hurts his hand, the beast slides off and reverts back to another personality....all including the audience are shocked and confused thinking that maybe it is indeed all all illusion.
Act 3 continues as per normal, all deflated but glass is the one that is determined to get the beast to believe in himself and get Dunn to come out and force himself back.
He achieves this and all of a sudden Dunn breaks down the door, the beast does seem to be back, etc.
During the final fight were they are trying to escape and contend with each other and the cops, glass has a theory which is that a chain of events and belief in one self allows the power of the mind to make physical improvements- so if someone's belief is shaken the abilities subside. This is perfectly in line with split and how Kevin can bring the beast out.
Twist- what convinced glass of this theory was when he found out that Kevin dad was on the same train, and realising there is some sort of chain effect that flows from incident to incident...severe traumatic experience is required to kickstart this process which they have all gone through.
When the beast finds this out he is shocked that this has only happened because of the train crash orchestrated by glass...and so that shake in his origin starts making him lose strength and power as he no longer believes in his purpose being truly his.
Dunn also fulfills his arc by seeing that the best way to stop glass is to not be a hero...and he to plays pretend that he is not and superhero no longer
Glass is killed by the beast by choking.
In a scene with the doctor with Dunn alone, she confirms that her faith has been shaken and cannot explain what she saw them do during the fight....but Dunn in sits to HER its all in your head and now he is convincing her that she is suffering from illusions , and with everyone dead does it even matter.
Come some time later Dunn is released back to his son. he states why he can no longer be the overseer in fear of raising another glass.
Come final scene. Viral video has dropped and it is revealed that glass recorded the whole fight and now the world knows heroes exist...Dunn now looks to his son in shock as they now know the world knows of his ability...and thus glass wins and we are left to decide how Dunn chooses how to twckle his future as the overseer with the world knowing about his powers.
What do you think? It maintains our hero, actually gives arcs to all characters (dunn wants to be a hero then chooses not to be for the greater good, glass wants then to be known and gets it, the beast learns his true creator, the doctor now believes the unbelievable but questions her own sanity) and we end on glass winning with dunn now having to face the future and possible ramifications

While I also believe Mr. Glass counter opposite is the Court of clovers giving that their mission opposes Elijah's, all Elijah wanted to do is make every one believe that superheroes and Gillian's exist that was his whole plan in this movie not to mention when Casey, Joseph and Elijah's mother Mrs. Price walk outside of the raven Hill he said the line "ah, the collection of the main characters" because the third act consist of MS. Jeremy, you got a few things wrong:
1: the reason that they don't go after Dunn after his train crash is because the doctor say right before they kill him that she was going to leave him alone but the beast forced her and the Clover's hand.
2: Casey needs to be in the movie because Casey wouldn't just walk away. She's a stronger person than that, and she saw Kevin's turmoil. She would've come back to talk to him either way, and the doctor would want to know how to get Kevin out and use her to do so to convince him of his "delusion". Honestly Casey's probably my fav character because she's the only one who has no powers who puts herself on the line in order to save a tormented soul because she sees the same in herself. Also, Anya's a fantastic actress and anytime I get to see her act in a performance that shows off what she can really do I'm all for it.
3: The Court of Clovers doesn't make them think their powers aren't real. When speaking to the Court, Dr. Staple makes it pretty clear this is their first time trying this and this is how the orginization will operate afterwards (but obviously that doesn't happen because Glass ruins them all).
4: it would be a viral video? The Beast & Glass likely made national headlines. A mass murderer and a man with 20+ different personalities who kidnapped and murdered a bunch of teenagers at a zoo with his bare hands, and continued to do so for 3 weeks after escaping capture and reportedly surviving multiple gunshot wounds? That's a serial killer that makes Dahmer look like a bratty child. Also The Overseer, a vigilante in a major city that likely operated for months if not years finally getting caught? Yeah, all three of these people are pretty well known. Also, they filmed everything in the ward, too. They saw Dunn beat down a steel door with his body and bend a steel bar. They dented a car with their fists and kept fighting. The Beast climbed up and around walls. And all of those abilities were reported by the news but dismissed as "conspiracy theories", now there's physical evidence, which also means the cops covered it up. Also there's footage of Dr. Staple watching David Dunn get drowned, as well as A COP DROWNING A MENTAL PATIENT AND GUNNING DOWN AN UNARMED MAN! Who tf wouldn't be paying attention?!

Even when a mass shooting or a bombing happens (which makes headlines), you don't see everyone around you pull out there phone looking at a video taken during the incident. It would take an event near the level of 9/11 to make the rounds in the same way that video did. It felt like an exaggerated scene, that could have been achieved in a more realistic way if the David's son and the other 2 (can't remember their names) were watching the news and the footage was shown. So no matter how I look at it, that scene seems like a bit much.

I disagree with several points mentioned about Glass; I think it was very effective in what it was setting out to do. Dunn was allowed to live his life up till now without interference by Black Clover because he wasn't using his powers and becoming a spectacle in the public eye. Black Clover's goal is to keep the existence of supers hidden. If Dun had led a normal life and never used his powers, they wouldn't have bothered him. The Doctor even mentioned that if she had convinced them that their powers were a delusion, she would have let them go. Glass - well she was going to lobotomize him and make him 'normal' again since he simply wouldn't play ball. Dunn and the Beast are harder to contain so they were going to kill them if they couldn't sew enough doubt into their mind. It makes perfect sense in that regard and thus why Black Clover didn't pick up Dunn right after the trainwreck. He wasn't doing anything to warrant their attention.
Another thing of note, and something that was assumed because of the end of Unbreakable - Glass is not Dunn's arch nemesis. Glass IS the villain, but not Dunn's villain per se. To use a venture brothers term, Glass is Black Clover's Arch. His sole purpose is to show the world supers exist; Black Clover's purpose has been the exact opposite for centuries. Also, Dunn and the Beast were created from the same tragedy; their powers are similar, (super endurance and strength, semi-invulnerability) They are rivals of one another whom Glass created with his actions. Another tick that makes Glass the Arch of Black Clover and not Dunn or the Beast. His actions literally create Supers; plus he was born this way so the triggering event was his birth which doesn't coincide with anything in Dunn's life IIRC.
I enjoyed the movie and after sitting and reconsidering all the clues provided, I enjoyed it even more once I realized Glass was the antithesis to Black Clover. Plus, his last words "I wasn't a mistake" is even more evidence that his whole purpose was to upset Black Clover's centuries long agenda which he did in the end through the help of the supporting cast (which he called the cast of main characters).

I’m surprised by how much the trilogy has been known as a low-key super hero series but people wanted grand deaths for the heroes. Dunn can bend steel, he can’t level a skyscraper. Glass is smart but brittle, and fittingly created his own end, The Beast is a wild force, but Kevin is vulnerable (as was said, The Horde was protecting him). Yeah, I buy Dunn dying by drowning, Kevin by a bullet, and Glass as he planned it. We focus on the puddle, but he was fighting The Beast in the water tank. Watched the about two nights ago and agree with Jeremy. David Dunn's weakness was drowning, he was as the movie stated UNBREAKABLE, meaning nothing could hurt him but he was still a human and needed air so I assume suffocating him would work too but then we get the whole argument about his lungs and shit. His death was shit, For me the way Glass died due to the Beast was near perfect. I get that they needed to take out the Beast because he was too wild and uncontrollable but Dunn would have jumped when they said how high. Up until the doctor showed him the vision he knew nothing, she was just a shrink and nothing more. They could have just shot the Beast and said it was a sniper. He would have believed that shit, killing him, to me was just seemed like shock value. The Doctor said the They left him alone for all those years because there was only one, He was the only one left so why couldn't they still just leave him be? thoroughly enjoyed he movie up until then. It just seemed unnecessary. Also the whole flash scene with her just seemed like an exposition dump, like why did she have to show him the truth? I think it would have been better to scrap the whole clovers cult and just had Kevin get shot by a swat sniper. It would have been a bitter sweet moment because you knew he didn't deserve to die but know the cop did the right thing. Have Dunn survive and Doctor now knowing the truth lets him go, saying that He was sane, leaving him and his son, and I guess the girl, to fight street thugs again, Maybe the son and girl get together or something? but that I think would have been a truly just ending, one leaving you both sad but with a little bit of happiness at the end. (God knows Dunn fucking deserved a happy ending. Cunt was a literal hero). But that's just my take, would like to hear yours, love it , hate it? let me know.

It's more then just sprinkles that was in his room. His whole room fill ed up with water from the tank outside then drains out. Him choking from being under water is what weakings him for a bit. He didnt get weak from rain outside at night. He has to choke on water. He can drink water and shower and be just fine. Its the choking of water in him that does it.

Jeremyjahns I gotta disagree with the deaths particularly David Dunn. It shows just how powerful his belief in his weakness of water and how traumatic it is for him despite his extraordinary strength and visions he gets. His death was all the more saddening and powerful when he set up the ending to be a showdown between beast and Dunn at the giant new tower. I like it didn’t take the meta dc/marvel approach and the real point of the movie was glass showing the world the extraordinary feats of men and women and how super heroes and villains do in fact exist. Hopefully it just ends on this three movies and lets it be :)

I thought the same! That David Dunn's weakness was that he was still capable of drowning like everyone else when it came to a lot of water (he probably could also be burned with fire or electrocuted, but it's not like that was ever tested). But instead they retcon it so that water in general makes him weak. If that was the case why go after bad guys when it was raining?? Sure, he had on a rain poncho, but that wasn't made of indestructible material.
Anyway, I did find that it was shitty way for him to go out and that it could have been done better. Like he was still strong enough to punch through the plastic water tank while fighting The Beast (who's hella strong to flip a police car). So seeing a random regular grunt being able to hold him down to drown him doesn't make much sense. Unless this secret organization has special people too? I doubt that because they're hell bent on making sure no one plays at being a 'god'.
Overall, I did like the movie. I appreciate in how the trilogy approached superheroes in a realistic way. But some areas in the film could have been done better. You've actually pointed them out in your review and I agree.

Can you imagine how fullfiling it would have been if he had beated the guards and Kevin, and saved his son for the last time and THEN, he dies out of Water intoxication, holding hands with Joseph and fullfilling their familiar arc, saying something in the lines of "You were Right" (like he did in Unbreakable). It isn't what happened, but how it happened. Kevin's death worked really well, but after that it became a what the hell moment. Elijah's death worked (given his character), but there could have been a better way other than falling out of a wheelchair. And David Dunn drowning in a mud puddle was bullshit. The revelation that Kevin's father was on the same train as David when it crashed was a nice little twist as well. Now, I can actually look past it because the deaths didn't bother me, but rather how they died bothered me (mainly David Dunn), but I can look past that because the rest of the film was superior to Split and almost as good as Unbreakable. The only thing I absolutely hated was the secrets organization. Absolute bullshit, but given on how much I loved the movie until then, I can look past it. The ending itself is very poetic and well done and is a perfect ending for that film.
