Tape your Ice Fishing Reels (Like a Pro)

- Most ice fishing rods aren't built with reel seats, which means you're left putting the pieces together on your own. Some folks like tape, others like rubber band systems. In this video, Joel Nelson demonstrates his preferred method.
Don't forget to grab your ice fishin' gear at your local Fleet Farm store or online:

Great video. Very well explained using a simple yet effective technique.
Great video thank you for the advice. We just started last year and all of the rods we got then had reel seats, looking at some without this year and I would have probably put about 30+ wraps on if I hadn't watched this!
I just bought this rod in a 30 inch light model and it is great, but I am new to using light rods. What is the range of preferred lure weight? TUCR has a very helpful rod chart and I was wondering if St. Croix had something similar.
Is that st croix avid glass rod any good? What is it good for?
Hockey tape is a better choice and is warmer than plastic electrical tape on those fridged days.
how would hose clamps work?
Clam tape is pricey but it’s the best thing out there. It only sticks to itself and it cures to be super hard. If you want to move your reels it’s easy to slice off
Hardware store sells the same tape for less
Hunter Weber just make sure you know which tape it is. It comes in different colors that way too
JT reel tape. Textured and doesn't ever slip or come off.
Or just use self adhesive silicone tape
Yeah, Rescue Tape is WAYYY better than sticky weak short lasting masking and electrical tape.
A layer of that electrical tape sticky-side-out first works much better and it holds your reel in place while wrapping in onto the handle. Just cut it length first. No need for two tapes my friend.
I just use the bands, tape all you want I'll continue using the bands because they are faster and easier than taping and I don't like loose reels. To each his own I guess , but bands are the cheapest way, just buy the castration band tool. You'll thank me. I use double bands on each end . Never had a problem.
WRONG BANDS SUCK DONKEY DICK!!! Thanks for your input CASUAL NOW MOVE ALONG.
Masking tape is honestly the last type of base type I would use! The sticky residue that it leaves behind over time is a nightmare. Higher quality Painters tape or litho tape is better solution. Concept in general is very sound!
I just put a single layer of electrical tape “sticky-side-up” first. It leaves zero residue and has the added benefit of keeping your reel in the proper position while you wrap the reel to the handle. That way, the guides are always in alignment with the reel the first time.
Mascing take is painters tape just two different names
I cant stand having to tape on my reel. For the price of ice rods, especially st.croix; I'd like that 10 dollar reel seat.
Hey Jeff - it's something we struggled with in the design process. Adding a reel-seat does add weight with some price, and though that was a factor in the decision, ultimately, we wanted pistol grippers, standard holders, and any other variations to be best served by these rods. Having the flexibility to put a reel anywhere on that handle was part of our thought process. That said, I completely understand and agree that there's many times, especially with larger predator rods that I'd like to have a reel seat. All of which is the fun part of ice rods. Lots of options out there to serve all needs and wishes.
@@JoelNelsonOutdoors I can totally understand for more affordable, let's call them entry level rods. But st.croix charges 70 bucks for a noodle that can break from a stiff breeze aha. Guess there's something for everyone though, I'm sure some people prefer the tape look and feel.
I'm in the same boat, I don't like the feel of tape and the castration bands everyone else used never seem to stay solid enough. I started using the 13fishing Widow Maker rods for that reason, $70 for a graphite rod with a reel seat
Zero to do with cost and everything to do with weight/sensitivity. There is no way to make a reel seat as light as a cork grip. Extra weight hurts sensitivity. Also a proper tape job will have zero movement with 10+ pound fish. That said I don't wrap my rods like this video
Clam makes a tape that’s amazing. It only sticks to itself so there isn’t any sticky residue left if you take it off. It also cures to become super hard.
Honestly, for the cost of a decent ice rod, why would they leave out a reel seat? I can get cheap full length rods with reel seats at walmart for less then what you pay for a quality ice rod. But they leave them off Ice rods? Maybe its because I'm new to ice fishing but ya. Wont be buying a rod with no reel seat.
I use big zip ties
Casteration bands ftw! I cant believe a "pro" would recommend tape that ruins cork
He actually showed in the video how to avoid that with the masking tape first. I don't like the feel of castration bands, but each to his own. That's what's great about it, we can all do our own thing. I build ice rods and I can't tell you how many people tell me they are going to use tape.
@@jaskoller yo do you actually make them? If so could I use an ice fishing rod for non ice fishing
@@Memesfromthemonkey yes I do, and yes you can use an ice fishing rod for other fishing applications, other than ice fishing. I know people that use them for dock fishing and kayak/canoe fishing. They work great.
@@jaskoller thanks for the advice but what would be the fish pound limit to a 20$ ice fishing rod
@@jaskoller like say if I catch a 7 pound bass would I be good
