    That must be nice living in Wisconsin where you know the ice will be 10+ inches every year. Here in southern Michigan if you're not willing to fish on 3 inches your not going to be able to spend much time on the ice.

      I’m in central Michigan (Clare Co.) and I don’t think I’ve been on 24” of ice in about a decade. The norm has been around 18”. This year, I’ve only been on 8”. Going out in a few hours. I don’t see us getting more than a foot this year.

    I started fishing the last 10 years on ice. Where I live here in Oregon it's kind of tricky alright we can have l 2in of clear and 5in of White Ice I feel safe walking on it. Walked out on the lake after it snowed about 3 ft and drilled my hole the water come up through the hole the weight of the snow was sinking the ice not good. I know I don't have enough experience so I lean towards the the cautious. side.

    I've gone by 4" and spud bar until it's consistently over 6", mid season I can expect needing at least one extension. Only gone through once and that's because there was one patch where hot water was being pumped under the ice. Lake Winnipeg and Lake Manitoba I wait for full lockup.

    I remember going ice fishing many times with my Dad when I was a kid on different lakes in Michigan. Usually he liked fishing on Lake Saint Clair. Sometimes we'd walk out to spots where he hand a Shanty set up and other times we drove out on the ice in his car. You could always hear the loud pitch sounds of the ice cracking around you! Mostly we caught perch and threw them on the ice throughout the day. I was always amazed that once we got home he would thaw them out in the bathtub & half would start swimming around again. He'd tell me stories of how the ice would sometimes break off in large pieces on Lake St. Clair and people would be drifting away and not even realize it. It seemed that the Coast Guard were always busy rescuing someone out there. As I got a little older around 15, I still went out with my Dad because he'd let me drive his car back home after the fishing trip. So I'd freeze out there all day just to look forward in driving the car home but also enjoyed the time with my Dad. So glad he knew how to keep us safe out there!

    I fished near open water one year. We were back away from it on 8 inches. About an hour later the water was much closer and our ice was getting thinner fast. We left and the next morning it was open. This was mid winter.

    My first ice fishing trip (approximately 1973, I was 5) was to the Mississippi River with my dad, we drove out to where we fished in our Volkswagon Beetle we left at dark and I think my dad got turned around and we ended up with open water in the headlights, I was too young to be as scared as I should of been. About eight years later I remember walking on spring lake with my dad (near prior lake, MN) the ice was thin, we were walking around on the lake and I noticed a hole that was drilled about five feet from us and water was gushing out of it, just a couple of harrowing experiences I had with my dad, it's a wonder I survived to adulthood. Lol Contrast that to going to Lake of the woods in April about 5 years ago, we were not allowed to drive on the ice by the resort we were staying at. There were spots that we drilled that we could not get through the ice (I had an extension on, it was 62" total drilling capacity!) it was 5' pretty much everywhere. We probably could have drove a freight train over it. As I have gotten older and wiser I prefer at least 6" of solid ice to walk on 10" for atv/snowmobile and 14" for a vehicle. Stay safe everybody!

    And the thing with a spud bar is everyone hits harder. So what is considered a "whack"? All your might? Weight of the spud and slight force from you? Its sure varies alot as a ice safety test if its based on strength. Food for thought. Lol. And has anyone ever ran into lake ice affected by underwater uprising springs in a lake? I'm told that causes weak ice in spots on a few lakes by me thru the years and have ran into some augering experiences that were pretty shocking..12" to 2" 30yrds apart for example on a real small lake/pond type..not much snow pack so I couldn't blame that. I was told a spring caused it so I've avoided it ever since. No geese either. Lol.

    We just had a lady die going through in an ice boat on my local lake. I was out there just before it happened fishing on foot but unfortunately they went on the wrong side of the highway (main lake side) which would have only been a couple days frozen at max. Not sure what she was thinking but that weighs to much to be out on early ice with. It happened in Guelph lake if anyone wants to look it up. Glad I didn't go through but I checked about every 30-50 ft and every time the ice looked a bit shitty. Even with a manual auger it's worth punching 50 holes in a day if it means knowing you have a safe path there and back. 3" of really good crystal clear ice for me and 4" if it's anything else.

  • @driftlesstroutdude7100
    @driftlesstroutdude7100 3 роки тому

    Good start to a conversation about safety but there is one MAJOR factor left out and that's the difference between early and late ice. Yes 3" of fresh clear ice is plenty to hold a grown man but I've seen guys go through 14" of honeycomb and have personally got wet trying to get up on a wall that had a strip of white ice about 20" along it. Shit gets dicey fast the last week or two and if you have weeds or anything else in the ice that can get warmed by the sun it will rot out very quick.

Don't fuck up the auger blades. I still checked the ice. Far too many factors to tell anyone that a set amount of ice is safe. I've been out on 2.75-3.5 of new black ice with no problem, and I've seen 8-12 inches that was getting sketchy. Snow and rain cover, black vs grey ice, should all be taken into consideration. Also, I read that temperatures over 32 for more than 24 hours can significantly weaken ice. I went through once in my life, on Lake Erie Presque Isle Bay. Got up on a Friday, ice was 8-10 inches, but the entire weekend was 30 mph winds, and 45-60 degree temperatures. Sure enough, was coming off on Sunday, hit a spongy spot, and went through. Luckily, the top of the ice was crusty and soft, so I could do a half push up and get out. Now, I am much more careful, ALWAYS have picks on, and never go out alone.

      I always here no ice is safe and I do hold this to be true BUT on smaller lakes when they reach 2' of ice in every and all places and it becomes impossible to get into the water, it would then be more dangerous for walkers on the walking paths on the shoreline for the possibility of them tripping over a tree root lol
