He passed away that’s why he stopped loving her. In this song you have to pay attention to the very first line….he said he’d love her til he died. This is considered one of the saddest songs. He’s all dressed up to go away. They carried him away.
Agreed on both counts. I saw him on his last tour before he died at the Arena Theater here in Houston. His 89 yr old sister was in the audience & a lady was arrested for throwing her panties on stage at him, lol! I thought whats he gonna do with those at his age, sniff em? Haha...anyway, still ha the amazing voice, but could barely get it loud enough for the music. He was fun, had the same enthusiasm as always, beautiful voice. I cried when he passed on, it was the passing of an era. I recommend A Picture of Me Without You. Beautiful sad song. Red Corvette us a lot more upbeat & fun, as well as No Show Jones written & performed with The Possum about George's drinking problem & losing much of his audience for a while, but it covers a lot of singer history & is funny. Thanks for another great reaction Kris!
Yeah you have to pay attention to the lyrics. The problem with this live performance, though, is that George's voice drops out so many times that key words in the song are often barely audible if you can even hear them at all. The studio version of the song is a much better choice for a first time listener to understand the story.
He passed away. First line sets the scene, then - all dressed to go away, wreath on the door, first time he smiled in years, they'll carry him away. All words to describe his death.
By gosh, my son, I don't think you got the sadness of this ballad. It's a friggn' tear-jerker. For years and years after she left, he still loved her. All that released that love was the day he died. Crow! I saw George live and the crowd went crazy at the riff of this song. My family still hang a wreath on the door of the loved who passed.
He stopped loving her today because he died! They placed a wreath upon his door, he was all dressed up to go away, also the slight smile that the undertaker gives to you when you pass on! So it looked like he was happy for the first time in years! And soon they'll carry him away, all of these clues are in the song! You just have to put them all together! I loved your reaction Krizz!
This is widely considered the greatest country song every written. You're usually really good at deciphering the meaning of the song, but the key is in the first line "He said I'll love you till I die"
In the defense of all the reactors that react to this recording, George muffled through the word “die” in the first line, so I think all these guys completely miss that every time. This is a phenomenal song, but a not so great live version, and they all select this one!
" He Stopped Loving Her Today ! '' by the late great Legendary George Jones was Voted the Number 1 Top Country Song of the Top 100 Country Songs of all times !
Not his fault. He said he would love her till he died. And he did. One line said he went to see his friend who was all dressed up to go away.. They placed a wreath upon his door. And soon they'll carry him away
It always amazes me how many younger people never pick up that the reason he stopped loving her is that he died. They drop hints throughout the song that should make that perfectly clear.
When this song came to him, he tried to refuse it because he said it was so sad, nobody would listen to it. I can't count the times it's come up first on top 10, 20, 30...country songs of all times. I see in the comments you've already been schooled about the meaning of the song 🙃🙃. Thank you for the reaction.
George Jones was nicknamed "No Show Jones " because he had concerts and wouldnt show up because he was out drinking, drugging and chasing women! He had his drivers license taken because he was caught drunk driving! Shortly afterwards he wanted some booze and had no license! His wife hid his keys because he was still wanting the booze! His bright idea was he was going to get it one way or another. So, drove his riding lawn mower to the liquid store and got his booze! George Jones was my Daddy's favorite singer of all time! My Dad lived his life almost (besides being a singer and being famous) exactly like George Jones! My Mom left my Dad because he was not a good husband or provider! I chose to live with my Dad after my Mom left. He'd get drunk & played George Jones record "He Stopped Loving her Today"! My Daddy never stopped loving my Mom until they carried him away! After my Mom, he was married three other times but he always told me, he would never stop loving her until the day he died! Me and my siblings played this song at my Dad's funeral!
The whole story is told in the first line and almost revert reactor misses it. "He said, I'll love you 'til I die". and she said, " you'll forget in time". He never got over her and loved her 'til the day he died. She left him. He did not cheat. Placed a wreath upon his door.... in older times and in the South when someone died a wreath was put on the door. Alk dressed up....they carried him away. Go back and listen to the song again. Its a beautifully sad song. I read that George didn't like this song but its one of his biggest. You are right, Country music tells great stories.
Classics were better because they were classy! They got the message across with clean, thoughtful lyrics. Yes, I'm a boomer X. Born at the end of 1963.
I have loved this song since I first heard it and have also loved George Jones' wonderful voice. This has got to be one of the most moving, sad, and yet beautiful numbers in country music ever!
" He Stopped Loving Her Today ! '' by the late great Legendary George Jones was Voted the Number 1 Top Country Song of the Top 100 Country Songs of all times !
I think things were so much better back then! I was born in 75 and I grew up in the 80s and I think we are a tougher, stronger, more informed group. We are not offended and we stand our ground. Our music was more about telling stories and less rpeating the same words over and over and it was even better if you start around the 1950s and work forwards!
For me, the "Classics" always have a timeless quality to them.Whatever the genre, the emotion, the nostalgia... it's still relevant to the ears, the mind, and the heart. George lived a tumultuous life. An alcohol and addict. He never shied from the truth. It's in his lyrics and in his voice. He sounded like he carried the world's pain, and he managed to do it with grace and dignity expressed through his music. A wonderful reaction Krizz. You got it! Thank you!❤❤❤
The smile on his face- was given to him by the mortician. If you relisten to the song now knowing he stopped loving her because he died, all the lyrics take on a new meaning.
George Jones was as big as it gets for a country singer. Everyone in the business respected him and he influenced many singers. This is a story of a man who died, and his death was the end of his love for that special woman who no longer loved him. They placed a wreath upon his door and carried him away. RIP. Very nice reaction Krizz.
George Jones was The GOAT he led a rough life drinking and cocaine, but he survived it all, most people don't know he has more charted hits then any other singer. I was lucky to meet my hero RIP Possum!!!
You have to find the videos from his funeral, first of Alan Jackson performing this in tribute to him, and then of Vince Gill performing "Go Rest High On That Mountain." You'll bawl your eyes out, lol.
George is a country music legend! 💙👵🏼☮️. You can’t go wrong my friend 😁. They used to place a black wreath on the front door when someone in the family died .
You disappointed me. The best love song of all time and you want to talk about his hair. The man loved this woman till the day he died. She was his only love and she broke his heart and left him. You didn’t really listen to the song at all Most of the time you catch it but you dropped the ball on this one.
A country Legend and a classic country song! HIs most famous. I am glad you are reacting to country songs too! I love it all. He is singing one of the most heart breaking songs, and you are commenting on his hair! 😅 Love ya though, keep up the reactions!!
The reason he stopped loving her today was because he died. The first line said, he would love her till he died. She came back one last time for his funeral. They place a black wreath upon his door and carried him away because he died. You have to pay attention to the lyrics more and less to the way the singers look if you want to understand the song.
The late George Jones is legendary. He gained the nickname Possum 'cuz of missing concerts (due to alcohol dependency). He and singer Tammy Wynette had a tempestuous domestic history. You have to pay close attention to country songs - she left him but he always hoped she'd come back. "He said I'll love you 'til I die" - and he did ("they placed a wreath upon his door")..
The next one you need to do, brother George Jones, who’s gonna feel their shoes that song there kinda opened you to all different types of country, singers, old school, country, singers, and I think you’d like the song
First line of the song is "He said I'll love her 'til die, we said oh you'll forget in time, " "They placed a wreath upon his door" ... back in the day, that's how a death in the household was announced. "All dressed up to go away" ... in his casket, hence he stopped loving her today
Back in the day the hair do was all that . We used tons of hairspray and good old Dippitiy Do. That stuff would hold your hair together in a Cat 4 hurricane 😂
Great Reaction to this Classic....... When George was presented with this song, he didn't want to record it, saying that no one would listen to such a sad song...... It ended up being one of his biggest HIts, and gave his career a second breath of life...... Singer is talking about his friend, the main character in the story who passed away...... - "He said he would love you till I die" - "All Dressed to Go Away"..... Undertaker had done funeral preparations..... - "They placed a wreath upon his door".... In the south they use to hang a black wreath on the front door to signify a death in the family..... - "Soon they will carry him away"..... take him from the house where the visitation was held to cemetery...... - "She came back to see him one last time....." She attended the funeral......
He died, that’s the only thing that would make him stop loving her….they placed a wreath upon his door and soon they’ll carry him away….he stopped loving her today!!!! Classic country song
I see you've discovered what many consider the greatest of the old sad country songs. Watch the Vince Gill go rest high on that mountain at Jones funeral and you'll really get it. George Jones a true country legend. The Window up Above, The last thing I have get was the Bird, Who's gonna fill their Shoes just a few.
I grew up with this song, and it finally hit me what he stopped loving her today meant . . I was 24-25, I kinda felt like an idiot, my parents would've told me if I asked. *He said he'd love her until he died* , they placed a wreath on his door.....he'd passed away. ~~~~~ we were lucky if we got a only half sauced George, he was a massive alcoholic (and I am not judging, I'm 5.5 years sober). *Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes* official video is an awesome time down memory lane.
George Jones is by far away. The greateit is country singer of all time. First of all George lived the song he was singing. That's exacthat's example.Tennessee whiskey George version is personal. I will love song because he can relate to the liquor and his lady. Where Ask chris stapleton shows his vocal It took me 4 or 5 To realize he stopped loving her today. Was about the man who loved her till he died. They stopped they start carrying him away. That was just funeral. So yes, George Jones is huge. The greatest country singer of all time.
The singer is talking about a friend who just died. An old southern tradition is to hang a black wreath on the door of someone who just passed. She left him for reasons unknown but she was the love of his life and he never got over her. This is explained in the opening line He said I'll love you 'till I die She said You'll forget in time He kept his word and loved her until the day he died which from the perspective of the singer is today, the day of his funeral.
This is my very favorite song even though I am a classic rock girl!! I’m on the cusp of being a boomer! So I can claim a lot of music. I love your knowledge as well as trying to learn! I find that amazing!! Love ya Krizz!
This is about his 1st wife Tammy Wynette & he did love her til he died although he remarried late in life. Tammy was it for him & it come in an Ace of killing him!! He was a friend of the family & we loved to get together & sit around by a fire just a pickin & a grinnin!! He was the nicest guy on earth..until he got drunk! Which was all the time. They named him no show Jones bcuz he'd get wasted & not show up for his shows. Him & Tammy made some great music together! They also each made a great solo career! She hung by his side until she couldn't take it anymore! That sent him completely off the deep end!! But it gave us some great songs!! R.I.P my friend. I'll probably leave that picture of us as my profile til the day I die!! 💜
GEORGE JONES IS A GOAT OF COUNTRY MUSIC LEGENDS ( GEORGE HARRISON WAS A BEETLE MEMBER) LISTEN CLOSELY TO UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF THE BEAUTIFUL LOVE SONG 🎵 ❤️ SHE WALKED OUT ON HIM A LOT OF COUNTRY SINGERS SOMETIMES SAY " LIKE GEORGE JONES"" OR "WE DANCES TO GEORGE JONES." HE STOPPED LOVING HER TODAY. HE WAS IN THE CASKET. THEY PUT THE REEF HIS FRIEND DIDN'T HAVE ANY MORE TEARS - HE HAD PASSED AWAY HE WAS ALL DRESSED UP TO GO AWAY. FIRST TIME I'D SEEN HIM SMILE IN YEARS. MEANING HE WAS DRESSED UP LOOKED GOOD IN THE CASKET THEY PUT A REEF ON HIS DOOR -- THE CASKET-- SOON THEY WILL CARRY HIM AWAY. SHE CAME BACK TO SAY GOODBYE ... RESPECT AT HIS FUNERAL. RIP GEORGE JONES WE LOVE AND MISS YOU I GREW UP LISTENING TO GEORGE ON TV AND HEEHAW HAIR SPRAY AQRA NET HAIRSPRAY LOL
He stopped loving her the day he passed away. Back then they placed a wreath on the door of someone that just passed away. And when they said they carried him away meant they were carrying him to his grave.
Meaning of song…man and wife, man says he will love her til his dying breath. She dies first. Years pass and he’s still devastated. Keeps old letters she wrote by his bed and read them regularly. Finally, she came to get him and take him home (‘first time I’ve seen him smile in years’-they were reunited). He stopped loving her ‘when they carried him away’…he died in the house and the funeral home ‘carried’ him away. ❤
@ I think it depends on the listeners interpretation. Some say she died and some say she left/moved away. I was trying to find the interview Johnny Cash did after he covered it. That’s where I’d first heard someone explain it as if she died first and over the years it’s been said both ways. Idk. It’s a sad song regardless of if she left him or died first :(
lyric "she came to see him one last time, and we all wondered if she would" only makes sense if she was still alive and came to the funeral. If she had died first, the living wouldn't know she came to see him, and if she died with both still living each other it wouldn't be for one last time.
There’s throughout the song that he died and that’s why he stopped loving her. People used to hang wreaths on the door when someone died in their family, it was kind of a do not disturb sign for anyone who wasn’t family or close friend. Yes the classics are better. They’re called classics because they had class!
In the southern tradition, when someone has died, a wreath - usually black - was hung on the front door. It lets everyone know the house was in mourning. And many times, whatever viewing was done was done at the deceased's house, not a funeral home. (Money was tight) "All dressed up to go away" and then "soon they'll carry him away."
George Jones has a gadzillion songs to react to. For a more fun one, you should react to "The One I Loved Back Then (The Corvette Song)". Again, there's literally hundreds of his songs you can react to.
You may have to start keeping song lyrics handy. While "fault" isn't addressed, the song begins with, "He said I'll love you till I die" - and he did. I've read that George thought the song was too sad to be a hit. He was wrong. : )
A wreath placed on a door back then meant there was a death. George Jones also had a reputation for heavy drinking and was called No Show Jones because he didn't show at his own concerts but everyone loved him wished the best for him
Southern tradition many years ago was to put a wreath on someone's door who had passed away....he died, they placed a wreath out of respect on his door....this is the saddest love song ever written.
In this case, it's implied that she chose to leave. Not that he did anything wrong. At the end of the song, she comes to his funeral. No hard feelings on her side.
In my sister's life this was a true story. She divorced her husbamd because of his drinking way's they had 7 kids. He never remarried. He always said he knew he let the best person get away from him. He remaimed single the rest of his life he died of lung cancer. What so crazy his last request was to buried by in the burial plot nest to my Daddy and Mama.
Well when you slow yourself down to listen to the words. Watch "Sweet pea" Vince Gil sing at Georges tribute after his death. GO REST HIGH ON THAT MOUNTAIN... It will rip your heart out. His Girl MM stepped up to help a brother out.
This is considered the saddest song ever in country music. It was only his fault because he died. First line in the song tells us all what the song is about. If people miss that....they miss the whole meaning. 😮
i am an old man but i remember my mother showing me her book of songs she wrote. she told me when she was young her and her older brother would double date and go to the honkey tonks. george was just getting started then he was raised a couple hundred miles away. while playing the many honkey tonks here in east texas my mother and her brother became regulars for george as opening accts and back up singers.george tried to get them to go on the road when he first made it big. my mother told him she wanted a family and life on the road would not be good for that. my uncle told george the only way he could perform was by being drunk and he didn't think he could drink that much to sing full time. my second cousin became a rockabilly and country artist. bob luman and had several hits. talent runs in the family but i did not get any lol.
The wife died first that's why she said you'll forget in time but he never did. Then he died. He stopped loving her that day. She came to take him home to heaven. That's why he was over her they were together again.
I've noticed by listening to reactions to this song. The tradition of placing a wreath of flowers on the door of a home someone had passed in. Is no longer practiced I guess. Because no one catches the reference.
He passed away that’s why he stopped loving her. In this song you have to pay attention to the very first line….he said he’d love her til he died. This is considered one of the saddest songs. He’s all dressed up to go away. They carried him away.
Back then they also placed a wreath on the door of the deceased to signify a death. Now it’s just festive for Christmas

On the button. Went right over Chris' s head.?
Apparently he was more focused on George's hair than listening than to the lyrics
He passed away. First line sets the scene, then - all dressed to go away, wreath on the door, first time he smiled in years, they'll carry him away. All words to describe his death.
Exactly as in until death do us part, it ain’t falling out of love, it’s a fulfillment of his marriage vows
Not just a country singer, one of the most iconic country singers. Beautiful voice.
It's not too late for today's artists to return to the days of fashion and decency.
By gosh, my son, I don't think you got the sadness of this ballad. It's a friggn' tear-jerker. For years and years after she left, he still loved her. All that released that love was the day he died. The song breaks my heart cause it's true to my family as well.
RIP POSSUM

Love this song 🎶💖
You need to listen to, Who's gonna fill their shoes.
Great song...
One of the best songs ever. Love this.
Love it, Love it Thank you
I cry every time I hear this song. If it comes on the radio when I'm driving I have to change the station.
Leann Rimes does a cover of this song beautifully but nothing compares to this one! 🥰
Hey Krizz...you keep listening to the classics (the best of the best ) and you're gonna burst !. LOL Great job, and thanks.

Epic Masterpiece ! dont feel bad , alot of people dont get this song right out of the box😁
The singer is talking about a friend who just died. An old southern tradition is to hang a black wreath on the door of someone who just passed.
She left him for reasons unknown but she was the love of his life and he never got over her. This is explained in the opening line
He said I'll love you 'till I die
She said You'll forget in time
He kept his word and loved her until the day he died which from the perspective of the singer is today, the day of his funeral.
This is my very favorite song even though I am a classic rock girl!! I’m on the cusp of being a boomer! So I can claim a lot of music. I love your knowledge as well as trying to learn! I find that amazing!! Love ya Krizz!
There is only 2 songs draw a tear in my this one and teddy bear
This song brought his career out of the ashes and made him whole again. I can tell you exactly where I was when I heard this for this first time
Blessings and happy holidays Krizz. Love everything you do man. Keep doing what you do big dog.
None of the reactors ever understand this great song. We all got it immediately when it came out.
George Harrison is the Beatles George. George Jones was a country powerhouse legends.
George Jones has a catalog of hits. Enjoy The Journey - Cheers
George Harrison was in the Beatles
They kept it classy, not trashy ❤
Greatest song ever ❤️
GEORGE JONES IS A GOAT OF COUNTRY MUSIC LEGENDS
( GEORGE HARRISON WAS A BEETLE MEMBER)
LISTEN CLOSELY TO UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF THE BEAUTIFUL LOVE SONG 🎵 ❤️ SHE WALKED OUT ON HIM
A LOT OF COUNTRY SINGERS SOMETIMES SAY " LIKE GEORGE JONES"" OR "WE DANCES TO GEORGE JONES."
HE STOPPED LOVING HER TODAY. HE WAS IN THE CASKET. THEY PUT THE REEF
HIS FRIEND DIDN'T HAVE ANY MORE TEARS - HE HAD PASSED AWAY
HE WAS ALL DRESSED UP TO GO AWAY. FIRST TIME I'D SEEN HIM SMILE IN YEARS.
MEANING HE WAS DRESSED UP LOOKED GOOD IN THE CASKET
THEY PUT A REEF ON HIS DOOR -- THE CASKET-- SOON THEY WILL CARRY HIM AWAY.
SHE CAME BACK TO SAY GOODBYE ... RESPECT AT HIS FUNERAL.
RIP GEORGE JONES WE LOVE AND MISS YOU
I GREW UP LISTENING TO GEORGE ON TV AND HEEHAW
HAIR SPRAY AQRA NET HAIRSPRAY LOL
It is common in the south to place a wreath on the door when someone passes away
He stopped loving her the day he passed away. Back then they placed a wreath on the door of someone that just passed away.
And when they said they carried him away meant they were carrying him to his grave.
George Jones is a country music legend the George you are thinking of from the Beatles was George Harrison I really enjoy your reactions
The Classics were definitely the best.
The first verse explains the whole song. His love for her died when he did.
When my ex husband sang that at the Moose, she cried. Him and his wife are still my friends.
She didn't die first, she just left him.
George Jones also had a reputation for heavy drinking and was called No Show Jones because he didn't show at his own concerts but everyone loved him wished the best for him
My 2 brothers had a set appointment every 3 weeks. And the wind could be blowing a their hair feel right back in place.
You should check out Aaron Neville the grand tour.
Love Neville's version of The Grand Tour! Great suggestion!
@TexasDonna-xu6fq I do too one of my favorite songs
Yes!
Southern tradition many years ago was to put a wreath on someone's door who had passed away....he died, they placed a wreath out of respect on his door....this is the saddest love song ever written.
George was in love with and married to "Country Legend" Stand by Your Man- Tammy Wynette...
In this case, it's implied that she chose to leave. Not that he did anything wrong.
At the end of the song, she comes to his funeral. No hard feelings on her side.
Yes their was a George in the Beatles. It was George Harrison.
Watch
"Sweet pea" Vince Gil sing at Georges tribute after his death. GO REST HIGH ON THAT MOUNTAIN...
It will rip your heart out. His Girl MM stepped up to help a brother out.
Surprised I had to subscribe again (maybe not...thanks YT). Peace, Love!!
George got pulled over on a riding lawnmower drunk heading to the beer store 🤣🤣🤣🤣
The guy passed away and never got with another woman.
He loved her until the day he passed !
He promised her lover forever and he died so he stopped Loving her today That's the basis of the song
He said "I'll love you TIL I DIE" then he died. So, he stopped loving her that day!
The wife died first that's why she said you'll forget in time but he never did. Then he died. He stopped loving her that day. She came to take him home to heaven. That's why he was over her they were together again.
No they separated/divorced.... he still loved her......she came back to pay her respects after he passed.
You are way off that’s not what it was about
I've noticed by listening to reactions to this song. The tradition of placing a wreath of flowers on the door of a home someone had passed in. Is no longer practiced I guess. Because no one catches the reference.
You tha man krizz
Please listen to the first line of this song, I'll Love you till I die".
For me growing up in the 70s, all forms of music was better. Performers took pride in their craft.
