One song of George's that never received much radio play was "Hell Stay's Open All Night Long" It's another that's 100% Jones and also written by him. As one George fan to another, I believe you will enjoy.

George Jones didn't like the song, he thought noone would buy it. Oddly enough it is the song that put him back on top, and saved his career. On a side note How has my redheaded neighbor not reacted to redheaded stranger yet?

George Jones was a country legend singer songwriter from the 50's-80's. He struggled with alcoholism & drugs during his life. He was married at one time to fellow country music singer Tammy Wynette & they had some great duets together. He had so many hits such as "White Lightnin'", "She Thinks I Still Care", "We Must Have Been Out Of Our Minds", "Love Bug", "Things Have Gone to Pieces", "The Race Is On", "My Favorite Lies", "I'll Share My World With You", "Take Me", "A Good Year For The Roses," "If My Heart Had Windows" & many others.

Hey neighbor, growing up in the 70’s I was a hard rock kid. But my parents were always playing old school country on my mom’s huge console stereo. George Jones was playing on that stereo quite often. I didn’t appreciate old school country back then, but as an adult, I have come to love that stuff. And this song is one of my favorites. Thanks for doing this one Red. The Grand Tour is another good one.

Before we became Rush fans, Stones fans, Beatles fans. A lot of us grew up in households where we grew up with these classics. To our parents, black and white tv's and radio in those days were blessed with these amazing country singers. George was special, his life wasn't easy and you're right, his voice would penetrate your heart and soul. My mom's favorite was Patsy Cline. Great reaction.

I grew up in the country music business.. my dad was a 4 time world champion breakdown / bluegrass fiddle player.. studio musician.. and had a music based TV show in the 50's-60s... George Jones was a good friend on my dad's.. Jones guest starred on my dad's show several times.. we had a studio built on to the back of our house and George Jones, and many other artists would gather at our house at various times.. I have a picture of George Jones holding me when i was a baby on stage as he sang at an event.. I went on to become a musician too.. got to tag along and play in my dad's shadow... my dad was still performing/recording at age 82 when he was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer.. he died 3 months later in 2008.. my brother and I played and sang this song at his funeral... my mother had passed away, also of lung cancer, but when i was 14 in 1983.. he never got over her either.. so i was fitting that at his graveside service.. we played this song as he was lowered into his grave next to her.. I sure miss him.. and my brother who passed 3 years ago.. I was fortunate to have grown up when most all of the best music was made.. in Country, Rock, etc.. and I got to learn and perform it as well.. I've covered most of it at one point or another.. from Country to Rock to classic Rock, Metal, Prog Rock, Blues... over 4 decades of my life now.. what a great track.. RIP Possum.. and RIP Dad / Bro .. guess i'm next.. but not too soon I hope..

Hey man that’s a great story about your dad. I’m tearing up.
I love the history of country music. I grew up on it here in Ohio and my grandparents and uncles exposed me to so much. I love older country but have a soft spot for what I call Casio Country that really overproduced spring-sprongy sound sometimes w synth bass. I would love to know what happened there! I mean even modern country is crazy! I’m a musician myself and I analyzed all the top 40 country from like 2017 and it all had the same formula! Like a mandate every tune hit the chorus at exactly 30 seconds after a 10 second intro and 20 second verse! Verse 2 always harmonized and same length then another chorus then either bridge or bridge w solo! 3rd same as the first and acts as outro! The artists really pulled it together and I see it as working creatively within a box.
Sorry I’m rambling you said you had a studio on the back of your house! I’ve have always wanted something like that! I bet you had some great times in there! You also said your dad had a show in the 50s/60s! Man is that on UA-cam or available anywhere? I adore that era and have been doing a deep dive into Tex Williams! His slide guitar player is out of this world and I wouldn’t be surprised if guys like Thorogood poured over and analyzed every lick!
The regular git solos could work in melodic melody. Sadly, I can’t find much about him but have been staying within the 50s/60s era… well except for getting into Texas Boogie after seeing a video about how the intro for La Grange was the hardest beat for drummers to master and that feel and drive were the essence of the genre. Feeling over paradiddle practice lol.
I subbed to your page do you have any videos of your time in the biz? I would love to hear any stories! I love hearing about the techniques used or happy accidents that always happen in the studio. I saw there was a book about George Jones recording this track and he sure as hell don’t want to but was broke at the time and gave in? Guess I’ll read and find out!
Oh yeah and man I watched the funeral of George Jones the other day and when Vince Gil broke down I totally lost it. But everyone stood up in support holy holy man that’s what it’s all about. And Alan Jackson at the end of “He Stopped Loving Her…” took off his hat and gave George the cowboy salute with it as he walked off was perfect. He might as well have been a character in a Marty Robbins tune!
Anyway, great, great story just had to drop you a line!
GOD BLESS TEXAS 1776 FOREVER! 🇺🇸❤

@@infectedgoat7775 I wish there were some recordings left from my dad's tv show... back in the early 90's i went to the local stations that carried the show to try to get the archives.. i thought i better get these before they are lost for good... too late.. i found that they didn't keep them.. by then everything was gone.. from all the stations.. and of course, this was way before VCR's.. so nobody has them that i know of.. so other than some 8x10 Black and white glossy photographs that the tv stations used for promotional and for the guys to sign autographs on (we still have a few of those.. they are online too).. we have nothing.. my sister has my dad's boots from one of their stage outfits.. as you can imagine, the country outfits back then were flashy.. fringe, big belt buckles.. custom boots.. etc.. the pictures are online.. some of the early records in the late 50's my dad played on are on youtube.. "Utah Carl and the gulf coast jamboree" was the name of the band.. they played a weekly music show that aired regionally here on the Texas Gulf Coast.. my dad was their fiddle player.. the show ended in the late 60's.. but i can remember seeing re-runs of the show when i was very small.. i can remember seeing my dad on TV.. he was also a studio musician from the early 50's deep into the 80's.. he played on a lot of well known musicians recordings from back then.. really good fiddle guys are kinda scarce.. like good steel guitar guys.. he had played with many bands through the years.. i was lucky enough to get to play with him quite a bit as i got older and started to play gigs.. he even had a band up until 2008.. he was playing gigs up until he fell ill with lung cancer and passed away 3 months later.. he was 82.. we moved from the house that he had built the recording studio onto when i was 6 years old.. the new house had a big room already perfect for a studio.. so i grew up with access to nice equipment.. I was fortunate.. my brother was also a musician.. and he was quite a bit older than I was.. so i had good guitars and good amplifiers around.. my parents always made sure I had decent instruments and encouraged me... i got to play with my dad and brother alot.. got to be around the business.. when i was older he took me to Nashville and LA for sessions.. my mom died when i was 14 so it was just me and him after that.. so i got to travel with him and got to spend some good quality time with him.. I recall my dad mentioning Tex Williams.. i'm not sure if he ever guest starred on the show or not.. back in the day most of the regional musicians/acts played together or at the same events... etc.. just about all the big acts made their way through the show at one point or another.. they had guest stars every week or every other week.. it really is a small world.. and Texas had a lot of country music.. speaking of Marty Robbins.. he was on of my father's friends.. he used to come to the house when i was little.. Gene Watson was around too.. Kenny Rogers was working at one of the local recording studios that my dad did session work at.. my brother and kenny used to run around together this was before Kenny was country.. .. a lot of the old country guys.. bluegrass guys.. were around before i was born and when i was small.. you mentioned LaGrange.. my cousin built some speaker enclosures for Billy Gibbons / Dusty Hill for one of their tours.. eliminator or afterburner.. i don't remember.... and Dusty used to live in my neighborhood a couple miles from my house.. More recently tho.. like 20 years ago.. lol.. you know.. recent.. god i'm old.. thing is.. the music business is kinda.. or was kinda tight knit.. back then, you saw the same guys around.. played the same places.. once you got known.. or knew someone who was.. the doors opened for you.. i ended up finding my way into bands/gigs i normally wouldn't have... not complaining.. just saying.. i was on stage sometimes when i probably shouldn't have been.. no video of me anywhere that i know of.. i haven't played much in the last few years.. but i'm kinda getting the itch to get a band together.. i'm not getting any younger.. lol.. if/when i do, I will document it all thought.. I have amassed quite a collection of musical gear.. i've been collecting since i was a kid.. i tried to get an accurate count of just guitars.. i'm just over 200 guitars.. (some valuable, some are just players..) not including basses.. maybe 30 basses.. these numbers fluctuate, i'm always buying, selling, trading gear.. amps.. i have a huge collection of Tube amps.. old and modern.. and I build and repair tube amps too.. so I have quite a few of my own amp's with crazy circuits in them.. but my gear is all over the place.. i have 22 mandolins.. 12 banjos.. 50 or so fiddles.. pianos, keyboards, synths.. horns.. sax.. clarinets.. flutes.. trombones.. trumpets.. drums.. electronic and acoustic.. recording gear.. from old analog to newer digital stuff.. mics.. amps.. speaker cabinets.. and everything to take a show live, and track it (up to 32 channels) too.. i've been trading some things around lately.. i think i love gear as much as playing it.. something i don't have that i want.. a pedal steel guitar.. i want to learn to play pedal steel.. i understand they are quite a handful.. to me good country stopped in the early 90s.. but to me that's true of most music.. i was fortunate to live in the era that spawned the best of all music in most genres.. rock, country, etc.. late 60's, 70's, 80's, early 90s.. that span is responsible for 90% of the best music.. country could go back a little for the classics.. maybe rock could reach into the 2000s for grunge/pop... maybe.. but overall.. 70s/80s.. that was my sweet spot.. anyway.. i'm rambling now.. thanks for your interest.. it's always good to hear that someone has interest in the old style country... i grew up with it.. so it's normal to me.. any of the new stuff doesn't interest me at all.. thanks for the note.. i'm glad my post meant something to you.. i wish i had some recordings to of the old shows.. i really do.. take care..

He Stopped Loving Her Today is the SAT question of country songs. So many reactors miss the subtle clues. Of course you’d be all over it. And Vince Gill and Patty Loveless did a stunning version of Go Rest High on That Mountain at George’s funeral.

"Once, when I had been drunk for several days, Shirley decided she would make it physically impossible for me to buy liquor. I lived about eight miles from Beaumont and the nearest liquor store. She knew I wouldn't walk that far to get booze, so she hid the keys to every car we owned and left. But she forgot about the lawn mower. I can vaguely remember my anger at not being able to find keys to anything that moved and looking longingly out a window at a light that shone over our property. There, gleaming in the glow, was that ten-horsepower rotary engine under a seat; a key glistening in the ignition. I imagine the top speed for that old mower was five miles per hour. It might have taken an hour and a half or more for me to get to the liquor store, but get there I did." -George Jones

What a great interpretation; now that I think about it, I’m sure that take on the song is what made it a huge hit… fans knew that George lived a troubled life and they associated this song with his marriage to Tammy Wynette. Great reaction

My first girlfriend in ‘85-‘86 turned me on to country music. I can remember the first time I heard this song like it was last week. I had just gotten home from somewhere, and the DJ had said that possibly the grates love song of all time was coming up. Then he said the name, and I thought, “How could that be the best love song of all time if he stopped loving her?!” So I sat there in my car to listen, and I got schooled.

It's not that deep in terms of understanding the song. We know that she left him, because she told him he'll forget her in time, and his friends wondered if she would come to the funeral. He never got over it. He stopped loving her because he died, wreath on door, dressed up to go away.
