    I have a correction to make, and I'm surprised nobody has pulled me up on it! I said that the pressure in the control circuit was 3000psi. Of course it isn't. It's fed from a low pressure port on the auxiliary pump and is only about 250 to 300psi. Still enpough to blow out the seals on the input shaft and fill the bell housing with oil though.

    Better part of 3 decades ago i went thru an Auto/Diesel program at what was touted to be the oldest Auto/Diesel Schhol in the US. Though my career path didn't exactly keep me turning wrenches professionally to earn my bread, i've never stopped being interested nor stopped getting my self greasy.
    That being said, you're delivering "Uni" quality content! An excellent teacher you are!

    Amazes me how somebody's dreamed up the idea, designed it, built it, built the tooling to make it. Just boggles my mind. Maybe to some it's simple engineering but I just think it's Brilliant especially when you think how long ago this was developed....

      It's a nice design, if it had been me, I would have had two hydraulic clutches and done away with the freewheel, but that's just me 😉. Thanks for watching.

    Thank you Clarence, a MF 65 ran away with me coz I had it in low when I was 13 and scared me. Now I know why. Lend your baking tray to Muck and get him to do the same job on an early duel power. Another reason for periodically switching to high is to lubricate the needle bearing between the input shaft and top shaft. Not so much of a problem on the mk2 box that you were working on, more so on the mk1 box

    Thanks for that great explanation of the multipower Clarence . I’m about to split my 590 and dismantle the gearbox. I’ve checked the input oil pressure and flow from the auxiliary pump (around 4.5 litres /min at 275 psi ) This seems to be in accordance with MF workshop manual. In any case the 4wd clutch and independent 4wd both work ok so I feel the problem must be with the input shaft to the gearbox. Never had so much fun !

    Thanks for this explanation, long-winded though it is.
    We had just a plain '66 MF 135 with no multi-power at home growing up but the manual always referred to the multi-power option without explaining the mechanics of it. I always thought it was engine power boosting
    My father had grown up working with horses and only adopted the Ferguson TVO in the early '50s after getting married and taking on more land than horses could manage. Apart from how to change the engine oil and squeezeing the brakes he never learned much about mechanics. And never let his sons do anything he couldn't do !
    Multi-power is a quite sophisticated system - more sophisticated for example than the optional extra overdrives on large saloon cars at the time. The machining tolerances then were nothing to what could be done via CNC in the '80s let alone today. Of course tractors back then had to be "run in" handily for so many thousand hours before really putting the power down. Otherwise you risked engine seizure.
    The MF 135 carries such a lot of sentiment by small and medium sized farmers all across the globe. Fair due to the boys in Coventry🧚‍♂

    Just a few comments, I would think as the hyd seals wear the pressure on the clutch decreases (progressively) so there's less force on the clutch plates so will gradually slip and so heat up and warp etc. This system reminds me of the Haldex unit on 4x4s like LRs. I would think it's an item that needs servicing based on hours use. One point to ponder at design time, would it not have been better to have high speed as default (no hyd pressure) and low speed as the pressurised torque path?
    I like corrections, I know often during a presentation some data is best guess (based on experience) to keep the narrative flowing, and then later someone points out a (confirmed) revised data point.

    Hello From Southern Victoria Australia, I Never knew about how you should not keep it in low too long, when I used to drive one for example when I cut hay I'd start off in low Multi power 1st or 2nd high then flick it up to high Multi power then when I come to a corner I'd always flick it to low to go round the corner a bit slower, the clutch when pulled apart looks similar to a motorbike clutch too, Lance Maskell from Bundy Bears Shed from up north in tropical Queensland did one up a while ago, he is doing up a Massey Ferguson 135 Multi Power and is putting a faster diff in it, I think he got the diff out of a 185, they do road trips and take camping gear with them, the one we had sat on 40km / 25mph at top speed, he was hoping to get as fast as 60kph / 37mph on the road.

    • @ClarenceFudWeasel

    So my multipower in my 1962 MF-65 worked fine for many years. Then I would notice that it would make some noise trying to switch from 3rd High, MP low to 3rd high, MP high on the highway. It got worse, to the point that switching to high seems to make no difference in any gear at any forward load. Here is what is weird. Switching to MP high going downhill DOES engage engine braking. Can you think of any reason that MP high would not engage in forward torque loads, but still does cause engine braking when there is reverse torque?

    So ramped dog teeth and helical splines equals sprag clutch with a lot less little pieces to go wrong.

    Can you get the multipower pack out without taking all of the top of the gearbox apart? Looking at a 178 with the multipower not working

    • @ClarenceFudWeasel
      @ClarenceFudWeasel  2 роки тому +1

      In a word, no. You can only get the overrun clutch out from the top. Sorry to bring bad news.

      @@ClarenceFudWeasel Apparently the pack was welded solid so that will be fun to get working, and expensive

      @ClarenceFudWeasel  2 роки тому +1

       @Oliver Lee390 People used to do that quite frequently, I never understood why. By the time it's in enough pieces to weld, they might as well have spent $50 and fix it properly.

    theoretically speaking......can you pull the MP pack and reseal it just by splitting a-la clutch overhaul?

    • @ClarenceFudWeasel
      @ClarenceFudWeasel  2 роки тому

      I have never done that, let me check later and get back to you.

    And one more question.....where are the test ports for MP?

    • @ClarenceFudWeasel
      @ClarenceFudWeasel  2 роки тому +1

      There aren't any I'm afraid. For pressure and flow tests, disconnected the feed to the multi power spool valve and plumb in an adaptor for your tester. It should be 250 to 300psi.

      Is it the MF Cat 3 axle you have or the Four Wheel Traction that you have? I believe the 4WT was a Selene axle wasn't it?

      You should still be able to get a new one from Agco. There are also manufacturers in Turkey and India who still make them

    What part of the multipower linkage can get loose or cause problems?

    • @ClarenceFudWeasel
      @ClarenceFudWeasel  2 роки тому +1

      The actual control linkage is pretty straightforward. It's not precision engineering, the pins wear and the holes stretch, unfortunately half of it you need to split the tractor to check.

    • @danagoglia1406

    • @davidisherwood7458
      @davidisherwood7458 2 роки тому

      Yes it can and will do….and dual pwr is quite a substantial unit for a tractor….worked for a plant hire company many years ago who ran a 7610 with a tanker for dust suppression….they would put any donkey on it and that is exactly what happened…. It totally mashed the dp unit up and filled the entire transmission with all the metal bits….looked like Gary Glitters boots…what a bloody mess it was

    • @ClarenceFudWeasel

      I guess you could probably do the same to multi-power if you really worked at it, but I have never seen it. Thanks for watching.
