I found this really helpful. I shoot on an XT3. Lately I'm noticing that managing batteries for the camera, audio recorder and lavs is really inconvenient, so the large external battery option is really appealing. How do you shoot handheld while still getting smooth footage? I use a stabilizer but it feels way too bulky to take around to all my shoots.
Hi there. Loved your video. I am building out a doc-shooting kit and loved all the products you discuss. In particular the NISI filters. Ah thanks for the hint about the mini follow focus! I was in doubt, but now I'll get it as it seems to be sufficient. Don't know if it crazy cheap or the other follow focus are crazy expensive though 😉 😂 Thanks!
Others are crazy expensive haha, and I owned a couple that were close to $600 and for the lenses I own can't tell the difference. Of course for bigger proper cinema lenses it might help.
I totally agree with your points, mate. The internal XLR preamp is really good. Have you tried the BMPCC Battery grip? I get about 2 hours or more whilst keeping the camera as one. Also, I’ve found that audio is cleaner with an internal battery rather than using the power input.
Thanks for watching man !! I haven't actually, was really close to getting it but the shape would haven meant I had to get rid of my cage. And that's interesting about the audio.
@@OfTwoLands sure! That was my concern as well but now Smallrig offers a cage with the battery grip attached. I use it all the time with my BMPCC6K :) works great. About the audio, I assume this has to do with both connections being too close and cause some static or whatever is going on there. Also, if you’re plugged in a wall it may depend on the country. Here in Peru is quite bad and I try to avoid it as much as I can! Even my guitar and basses suffer from this that does not happen in the US and other countries.
Good overview with one exception. That 49Wh V-mount PowerEdge Base battery has an inherently flawed design because the quick release mechanism is made of plastic. Do a search for resulting problems. Also, there are now several V-mount batteries from Bebob, Hawk-Woods & others that are lighter and smaller. For example, the 50Wh Hawk-Woods weighs much less and fits in a shirt pocket or belt pouch. It will run a Pocket 4K for over 3 hours.
@@OfTwoLands When you reviewed this battery, you said the following in response to a comment: " the only thing I have recently noticed is that when attached on a tripod it wobbles quite a bit." In the Blackmagic Design forum discussion of your review, another user of this battery spoke of similar problems. A quick release mechanism that "wobbles" on a tripod is worthless. It defeats the whole point of a tripod. There's a reason why these mechanisms are made of metal.
Great set up and gorgeous shots! Though for me, if Im filming a documentary, I wound absolutely need built in NDs. Lighting changes so quickly on the fly, I can never imagine trying to slide out those delicate filters and put them away and being able to do it quick enough to get the shot.
Thanks !! Internal NDs are amazing yes, and I used to love having them in my C200 and Ursa Mini Pro but I don’t miss them as much as I thought. I use the Cinema filters when shooting docos where you have time like the surf and letterpress ones I just did, otherwise I use a VND and a lot of the time if I really don’t have time I just use a basic circular 0.9 and adjust for the rest :).
Did I hear that right? You switched from a C200 to this camera set up? Or do you still use/have your C200? I have a C200 but looking for something a little more compact but still equivalent in cinematic capabilities. Would you recommend this? I'm also considering the C70 and Red Komodo.
Yes I did, I got hit with a bunch of work early this year and the bmpcc6k was a better fit. Honestly I was very close to getting a C70 because in my opinion it’s pretty much the C100 MK3 we were waiting for. But at the moment it’s still a bit too expensive I think. For doco work it’s almost perfect. And whilst the Komodo seems to be impressive I wouldn’t trade my Bmpcc6k for it. Depends what you shoot I guess. Either way you can’t go really wrong with any of them, solid options :).
Once you edit BRAW files in Resolve you”ll never want to go back! 6K 12:1 is so data efficient with outstanding quality that runs smoothly even in my Macbook pro.
@@giacomom2370 I feel the same way about 6K. It's so nice being able to have the latitude for cropping or stabilization and still being able to deliver in 4K, let alone the noise descaling advantage. My two video cams are the RED Dragon-X 6K, and BMPCC 6K. Gotta admit, autofocus would be nice and a lot easier than pulling focus 50 times per shoot, but aside from Komodo (which has it's own limitations) and C500ii ($$$), there aren't any autofocus 6K options out there. R5 is an obvious no, although I do like the footage coming out of it. I REALLY want to like the FX6, but my struggles trying to grade 8 bit Sony log footage a couple years ago always flash before my eyes, and again, no 6K. If only Sony would unlock 6K recording from FX9, that could be a REALLY powerful option at $11K and would more clearly separate it from FX6.
@@loudandclearmedia Really great video, mate! I'm also currently struggling between the BMPCC6K and the C70. Price difference notwithstanding, would you recommend one over the other if your focus is on narrative?
I use a B+W IR cut and works fantastic along B+W solid NDs. Just don’t use it on very wide angle lenses due to blue corners. The Tiffen IRND NATural seems like a good option too, I’m using those with my BMPCC4K.
As I have Full frame Nikon Glasses, I primarily use the Metabones speed booster 0.64XL. I actually wanted to know which speed booster (0.64 or 0.71) will reduce the vignette for my BMPCC4k when using the sigma 16-35mm lens.
I’m going to puck up the bmpcc 6k and i don’t know which lens te pick. The sigma 18-35 F1.8 or the canon 16-35 f4.0 . I can real buy one lens for now and i’m afraid that i can’t shoot at night with the canon lens. But the image stabilzation on the canon 😍
Hey, you just need to know what you need it for. If you do lots of corporate work or low light situations then go with the sigma. If you want to travel, shoot outdoors and need to save weight then go with the canon. Either way they are both great options :).
I have the tilta mini but I don't understand the piece you used to mount their rod that came with it. Idk if your mount is different than mine. I want to be able to use my follow focus without having to put on both sets of rods. For my battery option I put a v mount cheese plate underneath but that doesn't affect or get in the way of where the follow focus should be mounted. Any help?
Mine is the SmallRig 15mm Single Rod Clamp for BMPCC 4K & 6K Cage 2279, which I think doesn't exist on Amazon. It is made for the bmpccs. The one that came with the Tilta also works if I remember.
@@OfTwoLands 1 more question, in terms of not having large files is prorez 422 better to shoot on? Sorry for all the questions this my fist time owning one
Do you typically just use the shotgun for interviews? Do you ever incorporate lavs? I’m working on getting my documentary audio setup together for the 6k pro and was just curious. Love your work!
Interesting video! Seems like simple setup for on the go. Have you ever considered a camcorder type camera? I have a teacher saying they're undervalued because they are so practical, so I think I have to consider them.
Thanks !! I have used camcorders in the past but they cannot really match the quality of today's cinema cameras. Unless of course you need that camcorder look or their features more than the rest.
Question on the filters. If you use the Tilta mini, along with the NISI filters, what do you do if you have to use the ND and the 1/8 Black mist at the same time since the Matte box only allows for 1 square filter? Or does the black mist give you some ND? I have also read that if you use both you would want the ND filter mounted closet to the subject? Thx
Thank you !! I have actually never used both lenses on the same projects. I tend to shoot only primes or only zoom lenses. I'd say they could be matched if used on the same camera under similar condition but most of the time they would look quite different especially wide open.
This looks dope! Hey, what bag do you use? I have been using a minimalistic kit with a half cage but my bag situation can be improved and I'm looking for ideas.
I think I am watching this video for the tenth time this week. Your videos are very well edited and digestible. New subscriber here! I think I am buying the BMPCC6K this week, any objections?
@@OfTwoLands Hi there, late response but I ended up getting the 6K and its been doing me justice! (Also, I think the other comment is not legit correct?)
Fantastic video as always! You could do voiceover work as well! I’ve seen many ‘rig’ videos, but I’m very interested in minimal rigs and hand held shooting for the BMPC 6K. Yours is very attractive. Could you do a follow up showing how you hold your rig while operating the follow focus under varied conditions? This type of video seems to be lacking or I haven’t found and using a minimal rig like yours. Especially with the V mount battery under the camera instead of behind the camera which seems to reduce the 3 point stabilization options.
hi there, i really like this setup. quick question, what plate did you use to attach the battery to the rig? can you provide me with the link?, i would like to buy the same plate. thanks!
Not at all, it's just that the Rode has a gain control at the back for when the levels are changing rapidly. It is also smaller and less expensive as well as lighter since it uses 3.5mm and not XLR. To me the Rode is a great on camera mic and I use the Sennheiser more for interview and when sound is critical :).
@@OfTwoLands Crazy to hear you are enjoying ProRes (not that I don't!). As a VFX artist and editor I just need to have my Raw files. I know I know.. I say this as I currently buy ANOTHER NAS system for my home studio................
Nice video. But... I miss the part where we see how you actually use the rig. How is it to handle? What makes this rig better for handholding than all the others?
Thanks !! You can see me using this rig in a few of my videos. Didn't say it was better than all the others though, it is just the one I use for most of my recent work :). It works very well for me, even using it for hours whether it is handheld or with a Easyrig etc.
Money mainly haha. I remember reading great reviews about the 600 and decided to go with that one :). Plus the 600 can be operated with internal battery and phantom.
Thanks for watching :) And yes this kit would still work. It just depends what you need it for. Since then I have updated my matte box and also the monitor.
@@OfTwoLands What monitor do you use now? I'm thinking about getting the Portkeys since you can change settings on the display - I will be mostly run and gunning for documentary filmmaking!
Have you had any glaring issues with the integration of Smallrig w/ Tilta (I have a smallrig set up that I am thinking of meshing with some Tilta made rigging, ie matte, followfocus and maybe rod system)
Thanks so much for this video. I've read some complaints abou the powerbase battery -- have you had any issues with it in terms of quality, holding a charge, battery life going down over the lifespan that you've had it etc? Anything notable or are these negative reviews just weird one-offs?
Thanks for watching !! Never had any issues with it, even in Antarctica haha. Been using it on all of my projects since last January. Check out my review if you want more info :).
This was great! Loved the way you rigged it with the follow focus. Can I ask which rod clamp you used to attach it to the cage? Would definitely want to try a similar setup. Thanks a bunch! :)
Hi there! Awesome rig @Of Two Lands, thanks for sharing! Have you found the right rod clamp model @Espressomo? That's my favorite way to rig the follow focus but unfortunatly I couldnt find the same piece... If someone did, could you please share? Thanks a lot!
Amazing breakdown !! I'm thinking of buying 0.9 and 1.8 IRND as well, but I'm used to variable ND, and I would like to know how you finesse your exposure, especially in docu work when you have to be quick ? Do you play with aperture in this 3 stops range ? Thanks a lot !
Thanks so much !! In documentary work I usually have a 0.9 and adjust iso or aperture depending on the shot. Each location usually has its own intensity in terms of light so if I need to adjust more than that or change filters I’ll do it in between main sections of the shoot. But honestly using a 0.9 it’s either I have it on and play with aperture and iso (within reason) or I just take it off if it gets too dark. Hope this helps :).
Thanks for the video! How is the camera balance with the battery directly underneath the camera? (vs the very common battery miles behind the camera on rails?)
Thanks for watching !! I find it comfortable to hold with the top handle since the weight is pulling under. I also use the battery as a base to test or as extra grip when shooting handheld.
Do you ever find that the matte box flag gets in the way of the shotgun mic? And, why did you choose the MKE 600 instead of the ME 66? Thanks, great video!
Thanks !! No, I usually have the flag a tad lower but never notice any issue. And to be honest with you I had never heard of the ME66 up until today. At the time I bought mine the 600 was a great option and never had any problems with it and love the sound so stuck with it :).
Love this video, thank you so much! I had a questions about the NISI. They have different sizes and features when looking on Amazon for NISI. Could you give links to the 3 you use on Amazon? They have many on there. Please help :)
Thanks a lot !! It depends on the lenses / Matte box system you have. I have the 4x5.65 in 0.9, 1.8 and 1/8 Mist. I can't link them all that's why I have put the website :).
appreciate the video! gives me an idea of how i want my rig to be built out. question: that smallrig 15mm clamp should work with tilta rigs since they both use 1/4 screws correct?
Thanks for watching !! I guess yes, just hope that the holes on the tilta cage are in the same spot as the smallrig since they need to match up in order to attach the clamp correctly is that makes sense.
Can I ask, how you managed to get the mat box to work? everyone seems to complain about it not fitting well, and that the filter fallout of the front of it? What is your experience and do you still use this set up as of Feb 2021?
Hey, I wasn't aware of people having that many issues. I do still use it yes. I also have the Smallrig now to be able to use 2 filters at the same time. The filter is a bit of a pain to put in and take out but stays in place for me.
Nice vid and lovely work. Would you say you are happier with this setup in terms of usability, workflow and results compared to your C200 for solo documentary? Any specifics you miss (or really don't miss?).
Thanks !! I think it just works better for me at the moment for the projects I am working on. I miss the battery system, internal ND and autofocus moslty.
@@OfTwoLands Hey, thanks so much for your reply. Glad it's working well for your current projects - are you able to elaborate slightly on why it's a better fit for those projects? Sorry to quiz you - I'm just a c200 user who's always curious on alternative setups as I like to travel light 😉
No worries :). I needed a smaller body first, also since I do a lot of footage licensing shooting Prores internally is a huge plus and works well for archiving too. And of course the dynamic range shooting in snowy environment without having to shoot heavy raw files is great. Others are crazy expensive haha, and I owned a couple that were close to $600 and for the lenses I own can't tell the difference. Of course for bigger proper cinema lenses it might help.
@@OfTwoLands yes 😄 probably cheaper than a focus puller assistant then 😉
I totally agree with your points, mate.
Thank you, it was helpful informative and to the point. I enjoyed it.
Thanks for watching !!
Nice rig, good tips
Thanks :) !!
dope rig!
Thanks !!
Really good video man!
Thanks !!
What is that smallrig thing called that holds that one rod with the followfocus on?
I think it is the Smallrig Rod Clamp, maybe mini :)
Thanks !! I haven't had any issues yet and I use it pretty often but I will look into it, thanks :). I do like the Hawk.
@@OfTwoLands do you find that a variable ND slightly degrades the shot? I've had trouble with them (even expensive ones) over the years.
Do you have a link for the small rig side clamp?
So good man!
Thanks man !!
Did I hear that right? You switched from a C200 to this camera set up? Or do you still use/have your C200? I have a C200 but looking for something a little more compact but still equivalent in cinematic capabilities. Would you recommend this? I'm also considering the C70 and Red Komodo.
C70 doesn't have raw and if you want auto focus go to komodo
Great vid as always. Could you demonstrate what IR light pollution is in a video sometime and how the IRND fixes the problem ?
Thanks !! You can see examples in the review of those filters I did a few months ago :).
I use a B+W IR cut and works fantastic along B+W solid NDs. Just don’t use it on very wide angle lenses due to blue corners. The Tiffen IRND NATural seems like a good option too, I’m using those with my BMPCC4K.
Do you have a link to the clamp to mount the follow focus? I don’t see it on the gear list?
I couldn’t find it as a link, I think it’s just called the small rod clamp.
As I have Full frame Nikon Glasses, I primarily use the Metabones speed booster 0.64XL. I actually wanted to know which speed booster (0.64 or 0.71) will reduce the vignette for my BMPCC4k when using the sigma 16-35mm lens.
Great video, anyone know what part is used to attach the tilta mini follow focus onto the cage?
Thanks !! It's just a rod clamp but not sure it still exists.
Any help?
I figured it out. Small rig single rod clamp! Add that one to the description lol.
Mine is the SmallRig 15mm Single Rod Clamp for BMPCC 4K & 6K Cage 2279, which I think doesn't exist on Amazon. It is made for the bmpccs. The one that came with the Tilta also works if I remember.
Thank you for this. What do you think about wooden handles or similar? Can they help or not?
Molto Sucossa Figa! Bellisima
Fantastic video, thanks!
Thanks for watching 😊🙏!!
Does the screw to mount the cage to the camera comes separate? because I did not see any screws in with the cage
Definitely comes with it. I think there are 2 from memory, with an Allen key.
@@OfTwoLands OK I will look and see thank you so much
@@OfTwoLands 1 more question, in terms of not having large files is prorez 422 better to shoot on? Sorry for all the questions this my fist time owning one
Do you typically just use the shotgun for interviews? Do you ever incorporate lavs? I’m working on getting my documentary audio setup together for the 6k pro and was just curious. Love your work!
Thank you!! Most of the time I use the shotgun since I prefer that sound but I also use lavs and sometimes even the two together for backup.
Awesome! Can you put a tripod baseplate underneath the Core battery? Thanks!
Yes you can, It's not the most stable since you only have one screw but you can.
Thanks!
I'm copying that kit right now!
Haha !! Let me know how you go :)
Great video!! What is the videos ratio? It looks great on my S20 Ultra because I don't need to crop for full screen look!
Thanks !! It's 2:1 :).
@@OfTwoLands Awesome thanks!
Great infomative video
Thanks !! :)
Thx
You cannot. That is why I bought the Smallrig, for the occasions where I need to use both. And yes, ND first, then diffusion :).
@@OfTwoLands Thank you!
Wonderful overview of your doc rig -- thank you! How do the vintage ZEISS contact lenses pair with the Canon lenses on the same film project?
Thank you !! I have actually never used both lenses on the same projects. I tend to shoot only primes or only zoom lenses. I'd say they could be matched if used on the same camera under similar condition but most of the time they would look quite different especially wide open.
but how do you get this setup on a tripod? is there a solution to get the battery in another position?
This looks dope!
Hey, what bag do you use? I have been using a minimalistic kit with a half cage but my bag situation can be improved and I'm looking for ideas.
Thank you !! I use the Wandrd 31L and loving it :).
does this monitor work on 6kpro also?
Yes
I think I am watching this video for the tenth time this week. Your videos are very well edited and digestible. New subscriber here! I think I am buying the BMPCC6K this week, any objections?
Thanks so much for the support, means a lot !! Go for it man, such a good cam :).
Haha thanks a lot !! I’m actually working on a Shooting handheld video so I will definitely touch on that :).
Wonderful! I can’t wait. Hopefully it won’t be long!
Good stuff !
Thanks !!
Hey Flo. For your xlr cable from the Sennheiser, how did you get such a short cable? It's doesn't look like 19inches as per your amazon link.
Hey, they are the ones :). I don't think there is another model. 50cm seems about right.
@@OfTwoLands Thanks for replying! :)
hi there, i really like this setup. quick question, what plate did you use to attach the battery to the rig? can you provide me with the link?, i would like to buy the same plate. thanks!
The plate is actually part of the battery. All you have to do is click on the Core Battery link :)
@@OfTwoLands ahhh i see that now, thank you!
Why did you say you use the Rode mic in cold weather? Does the Sennheiser have a problem in cold winter weather?
Not at all, it's just that the Rode has a gain control at the back for when the levels are changing rapidly. It is also smaller and less expensive as well as lighter since it uses 3.5mm and not XLR.
To me the Rode is a great on camera mic and I use the Sennheiser more for interview and when sound is critical :).
What codec and quality do you film in for your Doco work? Your grades are beautiful and I feel like I'm missing something with my BMPCC 4K
Thank you so much !! On the 6K I always shoot UHD Prores 422 , in Gen 4 :).
What compression rate do you film at and what size SD cards do you take with you?
Mostly Prores 422 and Cfast cards (I show which ones in the video :) )
@@OfTwoLands Crazy to hear you are enjoying ProRes (not that I don't!). As a VFX artist and editor I just need to have my Raw files. I know I know.. I say this as I currently buy ANOTHER NAS system for my home studio................
How much would it be for a full setup pretty similar to this one?
Nice video. But... I miss the part where we see how you actually use the rig. How is it to handle? What makes this rig better for handholding than all the others?
Thanks !! You can see me using this rig in a few of my videos. Didn't say it was better than all the others though, it is just the one I use for most of my recent work :). It works very well for me, even using it for hours whether it is handheld or with a Easyrig etc.
you need to get sound device MixPre-3 II that will make the sound whole lot better
The sound of what ?
@@OfTwoLands I mean the overall audio quality will be whole lot better
Is there a specific reason why you went for the mke600 over the sennheiser mkh 416?
Money mainly haha. I remember reading great reviews about the 600 and decided to go with that one :). Plus the 600 can be operated with internal battery and phantom.
@@OfTwoLands dang deciding between the two, can’t decide ☹️
Is it possible to use this battery for bmpcc4k? You have great rig, i want to get it for my 4k version.
great video. thank you
Thanks a lot !!
Nice Rig! Would you add rails/lens support for Sigma 18-35 when using on a tripod for interiviews etc?
Thanks !! It depends but usually I don't.
Thanks so much for this! Very helpful! I have the 6k pro - would this kit work for it? any substitutions I would have to make?
Thanks for watching :)
And yes this kit would still work. It just depends what you need it for. Since then I have updated my matte box and also the monitor.
@@OfTwoLands What monitor do you use now? I'm thinking about getting the Portkeys since you can change settings on the display - I will be mostly run and gunning for documentary filmmaking!
How many core SWX do you take on a full day shoot? Thanks again bud!
Have you had any glaring issues with the integration of Smallrig w/ Tilta (I have a smallrig set up that I am thinking of meshing with some Tilta made rigging, ie matte, followfocus and maybe rod system)
No I haven't, everything works fine :).
Nice video :) what's the name of the tape you've used on the handlebar? Thanks!
Thanks !! I am not sure what you mean :(
Thanks so much for this video.
@@OfTwoLands Cool! Thanks for the reply!
This was great! Loved the way you rigged it with the follow focus. Can I ask which rod clamp you used to attach it to the cage? Would definitely want to try a similar setup. Thanks a bunch! :)
Thanks a lot !! I used the smallrig rod clamp. Not sure of the exact name but if you type that pretty sure you can find it :).
@@OfTwoLands thank you for replying! I found it! 😊
Hi there! Awesome rig @Of Two Lands, thanks for sharing! Have you found the right rod clamp model @Espressomo? That's my favorite way to rig the follow focus but unfortunatly I couldnt find the same piece... If someone did, could you please share? Thanks a lot!

great setup and beautiful shots! How do you use a tripod when the v mount battery is on the bottom? :)
Thank you !! The battery has a tripod mount at the bottom :).
@@OfTwoLands Yeah stick with what works! Thanks, enjoyed the surfing doc!

Quick question. When using canon prime lenses, do you always focus manually or do you/can you use autofocus?
I always focus manually when using the BMPCC6K :).
What made you go for the f/4 16-35mm and 70-200mm instead of the f/2.8 versions? I'd love for canon to release a 2.8 version of the 24-105.
Weight, size and price :). Plus I rarely shoot under F4 for travel and doco work. And yeah haha me too, would be a near perfect lens wjth IS :).
@@OfTwoLands how come u rarely shoot under f4 on doc and travel vid?
appreciate the video! gives me an idea of how i want my rig to be built out. question: that smallrig 15mm clamp should work with tilta rigs since they both use 1/4 screws correct?
Thanks for watching !! I guess yes, just hope that the holes on the tilta cage are in the same spot as the smallrig since they need to match up in order to attach the clamp correctly is that makes sense.
Can I ask, how you managed to get the mat box to work? everyone seems to complain about it not fitting well, and that the filter fallout of the front of it? What is your experience and do you still use this set up as of Feb 2021?
Hey, I wasn't aware of people having that many issues. I do still use it yes. I also have the Smallrig now to be able to use 2 filters at the same time. The filter is a bit of a pain to put in and take out but stays in place for me.
do you shoot documentaries on bmpcc 6k, do you use stabilization system? what is your go-to gimbal?
At the moment Zhiyun Crane 2S, but I don't use stabilization a lot on documentaries.
Super nice video. But I miss seeing you Holding it, so we can get a better insight about the egonomics :)
Thanks !! Sorry about that, you can see a bit more in my NISI filters or Meike 35mm reviews since it's quite a similar kit :).
And again I used to shoot a lot of content near the ocean so high frames rates is nice too :)
