Hands down the best rig setup for the BMPCC I've seen in almost a year. I too prefer to keep my setup to a minimum and this is absolutely perfect. Great video JP!
This was very helpful. Thank you! For anyone else looking for that offset plate, I would point out that the one Justin is using here is made by LanParte. SmallRig does make one, but it works differently. I don’t have mine yet, so I’m not sure which one works better.
This is so much better than rigs that cover the screen with a huge V-mount battery. You are using the form factor of this camera so well! Thank you for the inspiration
Please can you tell me the name of this strap haha. I’ve been looking for it but all the straps I find connect to some other piece that is with the same brand and accessory
I had the small rig cage because it was first, but I couldn't use the battery grip, which sucked. But it did have the built in SSD holder and that was rad, but when the tilta cage came out, I snagged that and that's the one that's stayed with. Having a cage plus the battery grip is money. And it looks badass.
@@BrandonTalbot haha no worries. Just asking because I had issues balancing it. The center of gravity on these cameras is stupid haha. I’m going to order the tilta one though. Just to compare. May like it more
Bro I just bought a bmpcc6k pro and have been looking for a minimal rig setup that works with the Zhiyun Crane 3s. Finally found one that is just what I've been looking for!
First off, the quality of this video... Damn man. A lot of people could learn from you. Amazingly well done! Definitely gunna check out more of your channel to see what else I can learn! I just picked up a BMPCC 6k Pro 5 days ago and have only had a chance to test it out a couple of times but overall I am beyond happy with the upgrade. Started out with canon rebel t5i, then swapped over to a canon m50 mark ii. Had a rig set up for that but it just was not delivering what I was looking for the most. So grabbed the 6k pro and damn... just need to pick up a cage real quick, and the rest of my rig can be transitioned over to the 6k cage as well. Gotta pickup a 1tb drive as well... The Cfast card that came with the camera is no where near enough storage at just over 200gb. Definitely looking to try out the battery solution you showed in this as well. The camera I bought came used with 5 batteries but having to stop constantly to swap batteries is a pain for sure. As for the gimbal issues... I have not tried it yet on my Ronin S but I am curious as to if it will have any issues.. Hm. I will test that tomorrow...
Hey man thanks so much for the support and kind words. Welcome to the Blackmagic family. Definitely my favorite camera system hands down. 6k pro minimalist setup is king. I always say, buy CFast cards but they are more expensive. They are more reliable and faster loading when powering on the camera. As for gimbal, grab the DJI RS3. Hands down the best setup. Basically like a crane but soooo much lighter.
@@JustinPorterMedia Thanks man! I think this is my new favorite system as well. Honestly, it is taking even cheap canon ef-s lenses and turning out beautiful quality that the other cameras couldnt match. For the CFast cards, I had definitely looked into that. Strange that they would be more reliable and faster than mounting a T7 SSD onto the cage. I will look into getting some more of those cards eventually then! For now as a college student still starting out, the SSD will be more feasible haha. I will look into the RS3, thanks man!
@@antoniosamora9009 oh shoot! FIRST, T7 don’t work! Only T5s work. The T7 doesn’t have constant read/write which will make the camera drop frames or stop recording. Gotta get the T5. But yes, I’ve had issues with my usb cable getting shorted out. T5s are very reliable. The best cables I’ve used were Kondor Blue.
@@JustinPorterMedia I am glad I waited to pull the trigger on the T7! Thank you! I will pick up a T5 on payday and will pick up a couple of Kondor blue cables just to be safe. I have the cage for the camera now and everything else is up and running.

I wish UA-cam would have suggested me your video sooner. I have gonex through so many giamt rig builds that I was getting discouraged. The tilta one works well and I already had a few nano motors to make it work lol. I’ve never wanted the Evf. I personally would find it more of a struggle to use it if I wasn’t on sticks.
@@JustinPorterMedia one thing that the portkey handle might help with as well is that it has a power out that can power the nano, so you wouldn't need to charge multiple kinds of batteries. At least I think so. I don't yet have it, but I it seems like it would be the easiest setup.
I'm very tempted by those Kondor blue usb-c cables from the SSD to the camera. have you had any issues with them, any reason to use the standard SSD cable over these?
Hey Justin, I would love to hear more about your follow focus setup? Do you have the Tilta Nucleus handle connected to the gimbal, and a Nucelus Nano motor attached to the 6k body (with a specific small rig part - rod and attachment of sort?) Thanks in advance mate.

I don't see that the Tilta plate installed upside-down lines up centerline with the SmallRig cage on the top because the cage uses the 1/4 20 slot right there to install to the camera... Did you do some something different or did you offset to the next row of 1/4 20 there?
Oh man I have no idea how I didn’t mention that. I used a “Unibit” to drill a new hole into the tilta plate. Super easy you just need the bit and a drill. I screwed the plate to a 2x4 and drilled a small hole so I can add another 1/4-20 screw. This way the plate doesn’t rotate.

@@JustinPorterMedia Thanks for that Justin. I've tried three cables so far, one too short, one drops frames, and the current one is longer than I need. A right angle connector is really required as the standard connector sticks out too far. I originally had my T5 in the slot at the bottom of the cage but the cable kept getting in the way of my left hand so I have moved it up and attached it to the side of the handle with rubber bands. Works ok, and without the smallrig cable clamp which is mostly a nuisance. I keep a Manfrotto plate on the bottom of the cage - I can rest this on my left hand and reach the focus ring with finger and thumb at the same time. Theoretically you could. The aputure MC lights usually last me an entire reception with the the built in battery. (About 5-6 hours). The batter has a USB port so you could always power it if you need to.
Do you find the focus assist to be helpful? I have it turned on and at “high” but it never seems to properly outline people. It makes trees and buildings completely red but when focused on a person I assume it would color them red also. I just get an outline and so it’s hard to tell if they’re in focus or not. :/
You mean the focus assist on the camera itself? I hate the focus peaking on the camera. I use it but yes, it’s hard to accurately tell especially if you’re filming at a faster T Stop. I use a port keys BM5 and the peaking on that one works amazing!

Theoretically you could. The aputure MC lights usually last me an entire reception with the the built in battery. (About 5-6 hours). The batter has a USB port so you could always power it if you need to.
Nice video, thank you black man!
Love the love ✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾
which wires do you use exactly for the battery pack to the camera
The cable I use is from Kondor Blue. It’s the bmpcc6k dtap cable.
@@JustinPorterMedia Im only seeing that 20" cable from Kondor Blue or that coiled version... Is that the shortest they sell?
@@craigkeyintel nope, they may be sold out. It’s honestly hard to get their stuff :(
It’s great quality but the stock is always low.
@@JustinPorterMedia yup that’s it. I would pay like a $1,000 for a firmware update to have canons auto focus on the 6k pro lol
@@bradpaulp haha I could live without AF but I’d pay 1K for ibis lol. Even a basic level of ibis to reduce micro jitter would be game changing.
What kind of light do you use for work with this gear?
The light on camera is aputure MC. My other lights are the Godox ML60Bi.
@@JustinPorterMedia thanks. Maybe you can help me with another problem. Recently I bought a Zhiyun crane 2S stabilizer and I’ve couldn’t calibrate and setting with may bbm 6k and Zhiyun transmisor 2.0. It was impossible worked with my gear.
@@gandrade I had a really tough time with the crane 2s. I ended up with the 3S but now that DJI has release the rs3 pro, I recommend that.
@@JustinPorterMedia thanks friend. Good luck!! Your videos are incredible.
Are you filming this video with the BMP6k ?
Yep I did :)
in which zhiyun battery port do you connect the bmpcc 6k pro? 14.8v or 21.6v?
I connect it in the 14.8v port. Either one will work though.
@@JustinPorterMedia gracias!!
Nice thanx
What mic are you using?
That’s the rode videomic ntg 🙌🏾
Is Tilta Nucleus M worth it with this setup?
I just use the M handle for the gimbal. Hands down the best way to hold the gimbal and pull focus in my opinion. When I’m handheld, I pull focus manually by hand not with the wheel.
@@JustinPorterMedia ok so you're using the nano motor with left M handle?
@@JustinPorterMedia does that hardware to extend the handles down come with the Crane or M handle or is that separate?
@@craigkeyintel it is separate. It’s available on tiltas website. I’ll find a link and drop it
@@craigkeyintel that’s correct.
Just subscribe bro. Fellow filmmaker!
