What a class act. He’s never been anything but pure respect and class.
Although Cliff was a musical prodigy, I feel like Jason was the best bassist for Metallica. From his infectious energy, and all or nothing approach, to his amazing backing vocals, and easy going nature…and when it came to live shows, Jason was quite literally the battery of Metallica!
Jason is perfect fill in at Cliffs place. 🤘. Hes metalhead, great bass player. Hi Jason ! All the Best brother 🤘
I don't agree with this. Clif had a monster energy playing live and did the backing vocals both live and in studio (something Jason never was allowed to). Love Jason, but the same infectious energy you see in Jason, you saw in Cliff as well, or even bigger. And Im not even talking about songwriting skills. Cliff in my eyes has no substitutes and I think James, Lars and Kirk still miss him as a member of Metallica
@@paulosantiago7457 I agree with you. Cliff will always be Metallica's perfect bass guitar player. Metallica are who they are because of Cliff Burton. The other members learned so much from Cliff in a very short amount of time. It was a huge major step up from Kill 'Em All to Ride The Lightning and it was because of Cliff Burton. Cliff Burton had no writing credits on Kill 'Em All besides Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth) because the rest of the album was complete before he joined the band. Jason Newstead did keep the spirit alive in his time in being in Metallica. Jason was never looked at as a replacement for Cliff. That is why the other members hazed him the whole time when he was in the band. They do regret how bad they hazed him later because he did not deserve it. That was just their way of dealing with Cliff's passing.
@@paulosantiago7457 i totally agree with you, only that it is wrong what you said about the backing vocals in the studio. James always did all the backing vocals, too. Metallica songs where other backing vocals were necessary are rare and Jason had the same limitations/freedoms here that Cliff had.
@@fam.hunger5244 Cliff did the backing vocals on Master of Puppets and a little bit of "sound effects" like the laugh on Fight Fire with Fire in Ride the Lightning
His backup vocals were untouchable
I don't know if there is a cooler, More humble down to Earth person than Jason!!! You never hear him talking trash , putting anyone down, incredible respect for Jason!
Totally! Jason is the best. Thanks for watching!
I want another NEWSTED album
Me too!
He's plays with Newsted yesterday in Florida...
As a guy who grew up listening to post Cliff Metallica courtesy of older brothers, we always thought Jason was cool, even as guitarists, we always watched him.
Amen
Met him once,somewhere- don't remember. Post Metallica and he was super cool...
Great interview. I love Jason, he's the best. He tells it like it is.
Thanks a lot Jerry! Please share and suscribe!
"He left the effin band" lol
Between Load and Re load period, Jason was like a fan playing inside Metallica, and he feels like “ this is not good’ ‘something is wrong, wrong direction’ yeah at that time he was like one of us
Jason was the fan in the band from the beginning and was never considered a full band member by the other 3 guys. It was always Metallica featuring Jason Newkid.
Humble guy, by far my favorite Metallica member.
Mine too!
The heart died with Cliff
The soul left with Jason
I've said this before
I remember 87. We all drew metallica on our lockers. If i could hang out with just one metallica guy,it would be jason. Seems like he has the best personality
I've always been a BIG fan of Jason's from Flotsam through to Metallica and even now. Jason is one of the best bass players out there and I hope to hear from him again soon.
Me too!!
+1 to his stint in Voivod!
Jason is the man! You know you have good taste when you're a fan of Sepultura and especially KYUSS!!!🤙🤘👊
Tunes from Doomsday For The Deceiver play nearly every day on my main playlist. Love that old thrash!
Thanks for watching! Please share and suscribe :)
Loved the energy he brought.
Seen him in 88/89 in Columbia SC
And justice for all Tour
Lucky you!
I like that Jason shouted out 'Low Man's Lyric'. I always liked that song, although the hurdy gurdy probably freaks a lot of fans out.
I dont mind hurdy gurdy at all but the album Reload as a whole is pretty weak comparing to most of what Metallica did.
LmL is a great song.
@@Mark.13. Even compared to Load, it's way less consistent. Nostalgia goggles made me think they were more even but listening to them both I was surprised by how much of a quality drop I felt in Reload.
I liked that song a lot.
Jason always was good to the fans, showing up to all the meet and greets.
Yeah man. Thanks for watching. Please share and suscribe! :)
We all know how "they" treated him, although one seems more apologetic for those situations then the other. ( and we all know who that is!) Jason has always been a class act.
My favorite metallican.
Mine too!!!
Well done interview! It was nice to hear about what Jason has been up too. Such a humble guy!
Thank YOU for watching, Joe! Please share and suscribe. More interviews on the way!
Thanks for this great Interview... Good fan questions! And Jason what a cool guy... Saying that Robert is a better bass player shows how humble he is...

La entrega de Jason es única e irrepetible.
Larga vida para él. |m|
Muchas gracias! Por favor no olvides compartir la entrevista en tus redes sociales!
I remember seeing Metallica in the Load tour, and the thing I took from that concert was that songs from the Load Album, that I didn't really cared a lot until that point, gained something very powerful live, and that made me see the songs in a diferent light. Thank you Jason!
Exactly!!!
Most of those songs are better live, no doubt.
It’s so great to hear that Jason and Dave Mustaine are on good terms.
This interview is 8 years old.
what? isnt this a recent interview? i mean jason has been doing some interviews very recently mostly because of the black album box set.
@@JPX64Channel No. It’s from 2013, he literally says it in the video. He said he played with Mustaine a few days ago and in the video Dave Jr is playing and he’s been kicked out of Megadeth. Use your brain

2:nd this.
There was no room for HIM. Kirk has credit on 13/27 songs from those two albums.
Good point, Patrick!
Refreshing to have an interview without all the Ego, Jason is a decent dude, too bad he can't be slapping it with Megadeth!!!✌️🇺🇸
As long as you aren't referring him slapping it like Ellefson did....

Jason was the actual soul of Metallica. While I can appreciate Robert's talent, he is basically invisible
Spot on man I agree with you.

Wow I never knew Jason wasn't thrilled with the Load era. That's comforting to know.
I remember reading a Rolling Stone interview with the band when Load came out, and they came off as straight up dysfunctional. It sounded like the band was on the precipice of breaking up. If I remember, Lars and Kirk were the ones who really championed the cover art, while James and Jason thought it was super weird and didn't get it. Clearly the beginnings of what we eventually saw in the Some Kind of Monster documentary.
@@badbirdkc I kinda knew that, but I didn't know Jason didn't like the musical direction.
@@johnp82 They went from a metal band to a blues rock band, load and re-load really are not my cup of tea.

I've always got time for a Jason interview. An endlessly interesting man. Always humble, respectful and passionate. I love how much respect he shows James, Lars, Kirk and Rob. I'd love to sit down with Jason n pick his brains. Oh n also apologise for calling him a bald bastard at Milton Keynes back in 92/93 ish? It wasn't just me, thousands of us were screaming it. A great gig. x
Yes! Jason is the man!
I'll say this Robert Trujillo is a great bass player but Jason Newsted was the missing piece of the Metallica framework after Cliff's death. I mean Jason just fit so perfectly it was as though he had always been there almost like a alternate player on a basketball team that got enough play that you weren't surprised to see him take the spot when Cliff got killed because it was like he/Jason was always there. To me anyways. I've been a fan since 1986
Thank you for this interview!

Jason's so cool, he's a fan's fan!
So down to earth, you wouldn't think he was the bassist for one of metals most influential bands for well over a decade.
This is one of the reasons he's missed by Metallica fans so much, he's just like one of us!
Robert is a great bassist, but it goes a lot deeper than that!
He's far from filling Jason's shoes in that respect, and fans will never really forgive Metallica for they way Jason was unjustly treated while a part of Metallica either.
Great interview !!!

@@PazBinv1 - Yep
I've always wondered, being James and Lars were always the captains of the this ship, how Jason felt about the music direction they took in Load and Reload. On the live shows he always looked like he enjoys playing this music but I had this feeling he was not completely on board with it. Now I know! Thanks!
You are welcome Eyal!!! Please Subscribe and share 😀
Great interview brother!
Thanks a lot! Please share and Subscribe 😀
Apparently Jason was told by the management that "you do know that this is the James and Lars show" when he joined them
And he was actually fine with that.
He didn't even have an issue with getting only one writing credit on the justice album. As a matter of fact, that was probably one more writing credit than what he expected. His issue understandably was getting mixed out of the album.
I remember being kinda sad when Jason left Flotsom, but then being super pumped seeing and hearing him in Metallica. I've seen both Cliff and Jason era Metallica live.... And honestly I can't decide which I liked better live, but the writing in the Cliff years was... Hmm.... More interesting?

Jason stated in an interview back in the day that Load was heavier than Slayer's Undisputed Attitude.
Those of us who read Jason's words in magazines, and heard them in tv interviews, before the internet turned him into a fanboy favourite, we all know that Jason is not exactly someone very coherent, when speaking words, and saying opinions... They seem to change a LOT, has decades go by. Maybe he has multiple personality disorder...
@@HeathenDance LOL, everyone does it. You have to promote your stuff even when it stinks. This happens in movies, music and anything that needs promotion. Just look at Dave Mustaine's recent comments on his move to Gibson guitars where he says he "secretly always coveted Gibson guitars". Sometimes things do not age so well.
they were promoting their new album, he wasnt being honest for the press and not get ass kicked by his bandmates, but now years later he can just tell his opinion at the time and in retrospective
@@Albee213 my thoughts exactly. In my job I’ve been in situations where I had to support products I had no say on and that I didn’t have a good feeling about. Sometimes you just have to do it and maybe 20 years later you can be honest about it..
@@Albee213 Dave went to Gibson?!
I completely understand why he left the Ozzy Osbourne band but man I really wish Ozzy’s would have stayed well enough for a couple more years because really ever since that time he hasn’t been able to complete any of the tours he started. He’s kept making music but I think Turing is just too physically demanding for him but I really wanted to hear one or two Ozzy Osbourne albums with Jason on base. To me that was like a super group Ozzy Osbourne, Jason, Mike and Zack? Come on that’s heavy metal royalty right there. I couldn’t make it to Ozzfest in 2003 but I really wanted to just see that monster line up on stage. I’m very proud of Jason and he has nothing to be ashamed of. At the end of the day he gets to say he was a part of Metallica for 15 years during their most successful run, he was on their two best selling albums of all times and he gets to say that he was a member of the Ozzy Osbourne band as well. He’s such a cool And genuine dude.

@@rocktalks5706 Sorry, but No they don't !
@@aujay the current success of Sepultura (selling out venues everywhere, staying with a big label, keeping millions of followers in social media and getting great reviews for their albums and live shows) say otherwise, dude. You can think whatever you want but that is the REALITY.

It's a shame Jason's side project with Devin Townsend couldn't have continued. That thing was crushing.
Besides James putting the kibosh on his side projects, according to Devin, Jason and Gene Hoglan bumped heads as well. They just never clicked.
I never knew that. It's so sad that Jason had a lot of cool opportunities to be in a lot of different groups, even though some never took off, like Devin Townsend or even Ozzy for that matter. I remember seeing articles that Ozzy wanted to record an album with him before his ATV accident happened.
Jason was the %50 of stage presence of Metalica.
Always wondered why he didn't continue with Ozzy. Thanks for this interview!

I really was hoping for Jason to make at least one album with Ozzy. Oh well, that guy can be rather chaotic and crazy stuff happens to him all of the time, so I can see why it didn't work out. Plus Jason was pulling double duties with Voivod on top of Ozzy's band.
Cool dude
They treated Jason so badly. He saw them for what they were, kept a low profile, made his millions playing music he loved, and then left them and never came back. Great job Jason 👏

Jason deserves a lot more respect than he's gets. He a class act, through and through.
Edit: this is coming from a multi instrumentalist. It was a shame how they did him on AJFA. One of their best efforts, could've used less of Lars and more Jason. AJFJ is a superior product.
Would love to hear that album the way it should be...
I remember listening to Load upon its release in 96 in high school, and thinking WTF, the new logo, weak rock songs, album cover and now they're wearing makeup. They never recovered and I've barely listened to anything they've recorded in over 30 years. Its like their first 5 albums were by a completely different band, that band I love.
I used to really hate Load and Reload. Eventually (meaning years later) I gave them a second chance and realized both have really good songs. Not even close to the first 4 albums but pretty good considering the times they were released. Thanks for watching!
It's a shame Jason how he was being treated by James & Lars, Don't understand why, Jason Rocks! Maybe jealousy, Idk but I think he didn't deserve the bullying that he went through,
Totally agree!
lol....if Newsted thought Metallica was a monopoly then good thing he never was a member of Megadeth
Hahaha good point!
if he had been part of megadeth instead of metallica he would already be broke these days
I love Load and Reload. Brilliant albums. Brilliant songs. Jason was stuck in a mode of thrash and that hurt him. He left but he should've stuck it out. That's what I think. Because he left we got St Anger... Lol. I wish the was still in the band.
Yeah man. Thanks for watching. Please share and suscribe! :)
What year was this interview? He says he played at hellfest with voivod a month ago, with him and Blacky on the same stage. Blacky has been out of the band since 2014. He also talks about Newsted like it's a thing, but Newsted ended as a band in 2014. So this interview has to be at least 7 years ago.
