There will never be another Cliff. But Jason was a excellent replacement. Creeping Death was the greatest live song ever when Jason’s was playing/singing it. Newsted deserved better.

@@paradiseisland69 Rob's a good bassist but he doesn't contribute as much to Metallica as he should or should be allowed to. If Metallica still did instrumentals then Metallicas instrumentals would be better than they ever have been because of how good of a musician Rob is.

Crazy, isn’t it? I just started getting into Metallica about this time 20 years ago. I think it was when ‘I disappear’ came out! I then saw Metallica live in 03’ when this low slung, crab like bassist joined and he was excellent also. Jason was a beast though...

CLIFF AND JASON. NONE CAN COMPETE WITH THEIR ATTITUDE ON STAGE. ROB IS GREAT, A GREAT MUSICIAN BUT JUST, I MEAN JUST A REPLACEMENT, AND NOTHING ELSE.
@@arianovateatro hard to argue that point...have the man credit for being a great musician, I like that. And yeah, does he have any writing credits with them? If not, very hard to argue your point. Personally look at him as more than a replacement, but not as badass as Cliff and Jason.
Man, Trujillo is a great bassist...but Jason had an awesome vibe , kick ass vocals and great energy. Respect to Robb...but I miss Jason. Great bassist, great musician, excellent performer.

2:47 Hetfield's vocals are iconic, legendary and amazing, BUT Jason sounds amazing here and it would've been cool to hear him sing more stuff and bring his energy to it.

Metallica is a unique band that has had the privilege of having 3 amazing Bassists grace their songs, album's, and stage.
Cliff will always be Metallica soul.
Robert is great and the best replacement for Jason.
Jason....man oh man, he was the heart that brought the soul together for Metallica.
He deserved better.
He's like Dave Grohl, he's got talent to play multiple instruments and a singing voice.

Rob edges out Jason for me just because of his ability to play cliffs songs so well, (Orion, Call of Ktulu, etc.) I def respect if Jason is someones fav tho
Jason had such an on stage presence . He added so much to even their earlier songs from their first three albums when you would hear them play live. Whether it’s him singing seek and destroy doing most of the vocal work there or his backing vocals on songs from ride the lightning, in master of puppets, or just the way he played every Koncer like it could possibly be the last time he’s ever on stage. He would get everybody hyped.
Jason's performance on the 1st S&M concert in 1999 should be on this list.
That moment when you realize Robert isn’t the new guy anymore, but has been in the band longer than any of their bassists
YES but the HITS SONGS of METALLICA was the time of JASON's esp BLACK ALBUM and prior albums
I love this man ...This man did so much perfect stuff for Metallica. Most of the Metallica fans are don't have a single idea about Jason's efforts. Thank you for sharing.

I so agree. Jason was a phenomenal presence onstage, with his headbanging, bass playing, and his vocals.
Rob is a great bass player, great guy, but feels out of place in Metallica.
There's something that Jason had that Rob doesn't that's perfect for Metallica.
I wouldn’t say “soul” because that was Cliff.
Jason undoubtedly was their heart. His passion for the band was unmatched.

I know Jason of course had enough energy to power 3 nuclear plants, but I do wish he got more credit as a bass player, sure not as good as Cliff, but he made some very badass and beautiful sounding pieces like my friend of misery and his tone was meaty as hell…Justice for Jason
There's a man with integrity and total commitment to music. Metallica was never the same after he left. James's ego is a sad thing to see.
He was so underrated, I think he was the first and best fan MetallicA ever had, and the albums recorded while he was a band member sounded great (except for ...And justice for all, of course, because his bass was muted)

For many Metallica was over after Black Album, for me when Jason left the band.

There are only a few people in the history of Rock that filled the shoes left behind after an original member passed away.
Jason Newstead, Brian Johnson and Johnny Van Zant deserve special recognition in what is the most difficult position in music.
cliff was not an original member. and he is death 35 years. i dont get why people always mention cliff in jason video. jason is jason, cliff was cliff, rob is rob.

Rob Trujilo is a legendary bassist in his own right, even if he had never joined Metallica he still would have played for some of the biggest acts in metal history.
I actually like Robert! He's a really cool guy. I think all three bassists are great.

My nephew & I were in THIS VIDEO, Jason's last performance as a member in FTB in 2000, LA, Shrine Auditorium Parking Lot for the VH1 Awards. All those 50 or so people around the parking lot were all MetClub members. I met Sebastian Bach that day, he was there! My nephew & I were "first in line" watching the Road Crew set up like in the middle of the day. The James' legendary good luck Marshall amp was there, a few feet away from me. Other MetClub members came from FAR, one dude literally flew in from Texas. My nephew & I had red devil horns on our heads. BEFORE the show, the ONLY MetallicA members that came out to meet & greet was JASON! Got his autograph, my nephew got pics from the Road Crew. They sat him down ON TOP OF THE ORANGE MUSCLE CAR. Before FTB, MetallicA warmed up with So What! [not televised, obviously]. When Lars came out he was smoking a cigarette, the first time I saw him smoking, so the cover of Garage, Inc of him smoking was not a "staged" photo, he actually smoked (not sure if he still does). I wish this video you made also had Jason singing full lead during the Summer Sanitarium Tour 2000. I also wish this video had Jason singing in Whiplash! I also wish this video had Jason playing guitar on Am I Evil?

Come on. Better song writer? Probably you never heard Rob's former bands... Suicidal Tendencies - and above all Infectious Grooves. Check it out and then try to think again about songwriting.

Jason is a true musician..he wrote all the lyrics and contributes songwriting on flotsam n jetsam debut album doomsday for the deceiver prior to replace the legendary mr burton..he also involved in some stuffs in no place for disgrace..anyone who loves jason should check on flotz.

One of Jason's last metallica songs is " I disappear " and his last performance is "fade to black"..... kinda foreshadowing and sad because after cliff died cliff was the only bass player metallica wanted and jason was the bass player they didnt want at the time but he was the bass player they needed to keep them as a band alive.

I can’t even imagine trying to fill the shoes of someone so great, let alone in the worlds most important band, and not having him to at least talk to about what he was doing or what he played. It took real courage to do what Jason did, even after the way they treated him and took out their pain on him, he was respectful with the way he handled things to the end, even when the rest of the band, James especially, was being unreasonable. Going through all of that, and then having the people you look up to the most becoming the people that hurt you. He may not be in Metallica anymore, but he left his mark on them and changed who they were forever, laying the foundation of who they are and how they operate now. Thank you Jason.
I love that in the clip of them playing To Live is To Die James and Kirk go and sit with Jason instead of walking around the stage like they normally would
Aside from a few select songs beforehand, all my favorites were when Jason played. He was so good for the band. No disrespect to others, but he was my favorite. Definitely metal. And he had some pipes too.
