- Can you believe it? Metallica's iconic black album has turned 30 this year. It is SAD BUT TRUE, but let's say: ENTER NEWSTED! As a part of the numerous celebrations, we talked to someone who has been right in the middle of it: former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted! In our exclusive ROCK ANTENNE interview, we talked to Jason Newsted about his memories of those days, about working with producer legend Bob Rock, about working together as a band, about creating a wedding Rock song for thousands of people and how the hell you remaster something that already was one pure and epic masterpiece. Because NOTHING ELSE MATTERS. Enjoy! ;-)

The Metallica stage has never had the same presence without Jason, He made them feel dangerous and I loved that.
So true
I agree.
Metallica missed all essence since Jason Gone
Amen to that
Both Robert & Jason have been two of my bass heros since 1990/1991 and one of the reasons I picked up the bass guitar (and Cliff too). I saw Robert open for Metallica w/ Suicidal Tendencies 1994 and he was great. But as far as a better FIT for Metallica, hands down it is Jason. Had meet n greet passes at MSG back in the 90's. Jason was the only one to come out for pictures & autographs. Much respect.
Despite everything that has passed since Jason left the band, I love how much passion he still shows 30 years later. Very awesome dude.
He FOKKIN left the band!!!
@@mauriciohernandezdiaz9825 Period! Exclamation point!
@@mauriciohernandezdiaz9825 Period! Exclamation point!
Black album was his gold mine. His place in music history.
I miss his backing vocals live. He was Metallica's Michael Anthony imo.
True! Very good analogy!!
Pin this OP comment. I'm just picturing James Hetfield prancing around like DLR as he's singing "Unchained".
🙄 not even close!
He was the physical entity and monster of live Metallica
Can't stand when people type "imo"
Jason stayed true to himself, he left Metallica from lack of respect. That says a lot about who he is.
Metallica is still great, but a big part of them died when Jason left. Will never be the same. Jason's bass, presence and vocals were animal.
Dude thats a new generation Metallica fan comment... guaranteed.
No, but i still love’ em!!!
He got out at the right time, really even by the time he left they were off the rails and even he couldn't save them. They have been a novelty act for 20yrs...once so mighty it's unbelievable but as always the mighty fall and boy did they fall.
Yeah! Jason letting his hair grow back! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Why is this such an obsession with people?
@@James-hh1lq mad at long hair LOL L

@@chassy50 didn’t Lars have short blonde hair in the some kind of monster movie?

I love Jason interviews, man...
goddamn jason is a beast, emotionally, emphathically, musically and as a whole person. by FAR the best dude in metallica feeling wise. Tallica for me is with jason, rob is a sidekick, way too soft and agreeing. jason is a BEAST!
Rob is like Morse in Purple, strangers
Agreed! Rob got the leftovers so meh!
They are all chill dudes
@@tobiascrow2792 Morse is great anyway.
As a bass fan. I think both rob and Jason are great. I feel as of late rob is really coming into his own and making his presence felt more in love shows. Loved Jason’s time with the band but I’m a huge fan of Rob from the suicidal days. Amazing bass player and fingers FTW
As a fan I feel he is dearly missed from that band.
Jason been such a great guy to take cliff’s place. He’s a down to earth guy, was a fan and still one. Happy to have videos of him talking
Jason is a absolute legend...such a great dude. His passion for music is infectious!!
I can still remember being a kid and seeing the Video for ONE for the first time and back then Jason’s hair coupled with his head banging skills were so badass !!
James back in the day... hated how Jason was such a fan of Metallica. You can feel how much Jason loves the Music
What a stand up guy Jason is. That what makes him a legend.
He is so humble and down to earth man just love him
This man complete the band.. legend
Its great to see Jason sharing all his wisdom. Hes so witty, insightful, intelligent and just going down to the deep of a conversation, thats so inspiring. One of the smartest guys and hes still the biggest fanatic Metallica ever had. He also found his self esteem over the last couple of years and hes sincere about it. Not bitter or crying after all the good old days, just knowing what hes saying and doing.
When I grow up and get old, i wanna be like Jason.
Dave Mustaine should learn a lot from Jason
@@jgvv Jason actually used to open for Megadeth's shows while he was in Flotsam & Jetsam. They have been good friends for probably close to 30 years now.
@@Kruegernator123 That's why he must learn from Jason
@@jgvv In what ways, if I may ask?
He’s definitely not smart or intellectual. Being anxious and superfluous in thoughts doesn’t mean you’re intelligent-opposite actually.
He always struck me as a really nice guy….was a hell of a performer!! 🔥🔥
That's because he's a Michigander. Compassion is in our blood 🤘
I love Jason Newsted! His vocals and way to play bass is awesome! Rob Trujillo is a awesome bass player too but i miss Jason so much in Metallica so much, His energy was so amazing. But my favourite is Cliff Burton.. may he rest in peace!!! Love from Sweden.
♥️🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Bring Newsted Metal back Pleeeeeeease 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
I say record a TCB album!
You're not fooling anyone, Nicole. We all know who you really are!
Nicole "Newkid" has been exposed!
Jayson rockin' the long hair again! He looks great! I miss him in 'Tallica SOO much. I love Rob but he should really be out there with his own funk rock, jazz fusion band tearing it up. Rob's skills are being squandered in 'tallica. For me, Jason is the _only_ bass player for Metallica, besides Cliff obviously.
I absolutely agree. Rob doesn't suck as a bass player in fact i think he's more skilled than jason but really he doesn't fit in metallica. I wished jason shouldn't have left
Jason’s probably just too strong of an individual for him to have stayed in any longer.
True. Jason is more of a metal skilled bass player with a lot of soul and still keeping it thrashy..
Rob is highly skilled and has a fat bass sound, but metallica is not just bass music. Its not funk or jazz, where this instrument shines, its metal. Its not like Metallica will turn into Primus or Rush or a jazzy Death Metal Band like Necrophagist.
Idk, to me, Jason fit more in with his aggressive, unleashed roaddog, street fighting, motorhead and black sabbath playstyle. He came much more from a punk, hardcore and underground metal backround.
Rob always sounds too happy, too bright, not serious enough. You gotta be serious and sincere when youre playing teeth biting metal.
Jason looks like early two thousands lars
I absolutely agree with you. Technically and skill wise, Rob is BY FAR a better bassist.
But Metal isn't about just ability. It's about spirit, energy and just GETTING it. And THAT is what made Jason. He was absolutely the SPIRIT of Metallica for the entire time he was there. Period.
Jason has always had great energy
The guy is a genius. So much knowledge, and wisdom.
Perfect interview. The guest occupied most of the minutes.
Jason is a man of his own league. His ethos on life is great, remember the great & forget the bad. What a man, I have the utmost respect for him as a musician and a person. I wish I was old enough to have saw him live with Metallica. His energy, his singing, his passion is unmatched.
Jason will always be my favorite member
We miss you Jason!🎸🤟🔝
Wow what a powerful and passionate individual Jason is!
Jason doing an interview has the same energy as playing on stage. Listening to him on this makes we want to bang my head! Know what I mean?
Jason Newsted respect from Brasil 🇧🇷🤘🎸
17:57 "we're" and "we"
Jason you never left the Metallica I still listen to.
Jason is amazing, pays a lot of credits to the band not putting himself in the spotlight for almost nothing. Respect
Everybody says that Jason's backup vocals were great but I think he was more like a co-singer with James although he didn't sing on the albums. He and James made really amazing combo on live.
Love Rob but I do miss Jason in Tallica sometimes. Best wishes to him.
Same. But, I miss him _all_ the time in 'tallica. They have been missing Jason's intense energy and stage performance as well as his backing and sometimes lead vocals (to give James a rest). I loved Rob mainly in Suicidal Tendencies and Infectious Grooves but also with Ozzy too. I feel like Rob is being held back in Metallica, actually. He is such an amazing bassist. He can play anything. But a lot of his skills, like pop and slap (which wouldn't fit into 'tallica's style), aren't on display like they should be.
@@Purpleskyshorizon 150% agreed
I don't love Rob, and I miss Jason!
Is saying tallica really saving you that much time that's its worth saying it? It's fucking Metallica four eyes
Damn..such hostility.lmao
Jason is so awesome. His passion is so unbreakable.
Jason Newsted is awesome. Great interview.
Too bad his shoulders won't let him properly play their tunes anymore...would be awesome to see him do another tour with the band. He, Cliff, and Steve Harris were my inspiration for taking up the bass back in '95. Still killing it because of guys like Jason. Thank you, JN!
I love that Jason left. Look at him,guy still has integrity.hes not interested in bullshitting and the lies.and the Hollywood fakery.guy made it,and got out.hes still just a fan.a normal guy.good for him.cant say the same for the others except maybe rob whose still just a guy.
Man let's get one more album with Jason with Metallica. Rob can go do an album with Zakk then come back or whatever .
Jason hasn't gotten much recognition lately for his incredible contribution to that album. The other guys have been all over the place recently with no mention of Jason.
Jason is amazing but aren’t you overplaying his roll on the black album? He had no involvement in the production and was only involved in the writing on one song (my friend of misery) on the album.
Jason is such a great interviewee, the interviewer is awful, but Jason carried this whole conversation.
I don't think he was too awful. He was excited and got to ask questions that some of the other interviewers in the past two months have not. I'm glad Jason was kind enough not to give him the cold shoulder.
Jason's still such a good ambassador for Metallica. They did not deserve him. Still don't.
It’s all water under the bridge now. Jason even said there were more great times than bad, it’s just addiction and managers that didn’t care about the bands best interests that was causing a huge rift in the band. But Jason said in an interview that he and Lars are way closer now then ever
He was lucky to join them. There were better players who could actually contribute musically...
@@andrewmcgill9544 Jason definitely contributed musically.
100% this! They will still make snide remarks about him because well they are a bunch of fucking assholes, now try to find Newsted even remotely acting in the same way...don't worry..i'll wait!
@@andrewmcgill9544 and they pick him because..?!?? allmighty james did a mistake or what? and mistake go on with them for 15 years? what are you saing fool??
Such a cool interview! Great to see Jason. He looks happy

Awesome interview! I don't care what any body says he is and was my favorite Metallica member with the most electric energy🤘 And he was absolutely right about Nothing else Matters as a wedding song it was for my wife and i🤘
My 2nd fave to Cliff. That is so nice about Nothing Else Matters being your wedding song! Congratulations! I wish you and your wife all the best! :)
I love cliff too it's almost impossible to choose. Nothing else Matters was my wifes choice witch i wasn't going to argue with lol. Thank you for your kind words and we wish you nothing but the best as well 👍😎😁
Jason newsted Jason newsted Jason newsted...... the bass guitar lines and Jason newsteds personality and style is the reason why I like the black album......
20 years and still is missed
It's kinda funny. Jason is interviewed for his time with metallica and the interviewer has a t-shirt from the band jason was a part of when he left metallica.
Surprisingly articulate
Legendary interview 🤘
Jason Newsted is the best for Metallica...
I'd love to see Jason tour with MetallicA again. I've NOTHING against Rob he's incredible ...but Jason 🤘🏻
Glad to watch Jason Newsted again 🤘🏻 :D
I love how passionate Jason is about the work he's been involved in. And he is 100% correct. Metallica ended up being the biggest, most well known and most successful band in the history of mankind. There isn't a person on this entire planet (almost) who doesn't know who Metallica is. I bought kill em all the day it came out. I would have never thought their music would one day be inducted into the library of congress.
Came to party in 86, folks thought it was a phase I’d grow out of. Still here
This guy walked away from Metallica!
What a legend.
Will always be missed in Metallica
Metallica is my favorite band. But Robert is still the new guy for me.
Hey from Denmark, Jason still my favourite after 31 years, got my first cd at 8 years old and it was AJFA.
Great interview , Jason is awesome !!
I have not listen to any remake or remaster of The Black album, I still love the way it sounds and respect all the hours and dollars its has taken to achieve ..!!
Bien escuhar al viejo Jason 🤘 exelente entrevista.
Rock Antenne un especial en vivo del Albún Negro el domingo. 🤘 🇪🇨
Wow, I really enjoyed the whole interview. The questions and answers were the right, the mood of both, Jason's attitude, reflexion, memories, everything was really good. Great interview! Greetings from Mexico
Jason was the soul and energy of every Metallica performance. He played with the frenzied enthusiasm that the fans who were seeing Metallica for the first time in the crowd had.
Great interview. Jason is awesome.
He's always been the most likeable guy in Metallica. Just seems super cool.
He is so smart in the way he breaks it down to understand and see everything
Great interview, Great questions! They have been asked before yes however these questions from the interviewer is very direct and simple. For that we get great answers.
Jason is the fucking coolest 🤘🏼🤘🏿🤘🏼🤘🏿
Great job! Jason was really engaged!
newsted is the man great interview
Glad to see Jason getting his long hair on! 🤘🙏
Jasoooonnnnn!
It's so sad I was only 2-3 years old when Jason left, because I never will be able to see how he is live. Seeing stuff online makes me think that Jason is a very cool dude and that he still is a chill dude. I won't pick between the three official bassists in Metallica, since I like all three of them (Cliff, Jason and Rob).
Great interview a lot of good questions were asked Jason. I have been a fan of The Black Album for 25 years ever since a former friend showed me his Metallica CD collection which he carried around with him at school. I have like 4 copies of this album three on CD and an original '91 vinyl record, despite this still ordered the gigantic box set.
So great to see Jason's long hair again! \m/
He is the best
Love Jason and Kirk, those 2 dudes are the most real of the group. As much as I respect James and Lars, they just too often come off as dicks....
And where does James get off telling Jason he can’t have a side group, cause it may take away from Metallica, when at basically the same time James was only doing 4 hours a day with Metallica? Why couldn’t Jason do 4 hours a day Metallica, then the rest of his time what he wants, the same way James basically did?
Amen to that!
I think that wasn’t the point at the end. The point was they denied always something to Jason, because they denied him. The guy that should not be. So the next episode was about his innocent side projects. Just for the habit of saying no. Could have been everything else.
But the relationship was so deteriorated that went into pieces. Obviously it’s only my opinion, but the story of being jealous about Jason contribute is ridiculous, as they never embraced his presence.
You've missed out on some facts. James admitted he's a controlling type of a person. He's since apologized and made amens to Jason.
But, ìt WAS NOT the only band Jason was involved with on top of Metallica. Echo Brain & Chop House Band. I see James' point.
And the four hour practices? That was after Jason had already left.
@@tallycahamuhlhetru26 I get what you’re saying, and I do respect James, and admire the lengths he’s gone to try to improve himself over the years.
And I realize it was after James went to rehab that he started the 4hr days, that’s why I wrote he did that at basically the same time. It was like a year apart, but we are dealing with a long term story. I was just pointing out that James felt it okay for him to limit his input, for whatever reasons, where Jason wasn’t even looking to limit his input to Metalllica. Maybe for his sanity and health he needed another outlet than these guys all the time. Just doesn’t seem right, although I get James and Lars basically owned Metallica, more or less, at the time and made the decisions
@@m.r.4455 you make a very good point,@ and I think you’re right. At that point, maybe there was no fixing the relationship, it was bound to break at some point, this just being the straw that broke the camels back
This Album changed the course of my life. I was 15 and was listening to Vanilla Ice and Kris Kross and MC Hammer. My sister bought the Black Album. It had just been released. We listened to it over and over. I had never heard of Metallica before this. I started noodling on my dads guitar and have been playing ever since then. And am a huge Metal head. 😎🤘
I love Jason sm man
Jason looks great!
Love Jason so much, such a cool dude, the sort you'd invite to a BBQ. Was lucky enough to meet him back in the '90s when I was a teenager. Back then, he was more or less the only member of Metallica who bothered to show up to their own meet 'n' greets. Devastated he left the band and he's still very much sorely missed now. Rob is a great player and geezer, but Jason was always the better fit.
love you Jason, I miss you in Tallica....
Jason is STILL passionate...love the dude.
I've never seen any of the other band members being mean to JN, and all of his interviews he speaks about them in a brotherly way, he even explained the supposed 'hazing' in one of the interviews and that it did not bother him much compared to what Metallica gave him back in return, it was his choice to leave and live the life he loves, I wonder why people make up stories about this guy that are not real, why do they need to put a feud between him and Metallica? from everything I seen to day, they seem to have remained good friends, just look how they are acknowledging him as part of the black album's 30th anniversary, he even did the unboxing of the set himself.
awesome interview man
I am glad his hair is growing out a bit. He had the most iconic "metal" hair.
Ja geil!!! 🤘 Jason Newsted auf Rock Antenne!🔥🤘 sauba!👍👏
He was an absolute pillar of power in that band. More than James and Lars will admit
Looks like a nice chat with Nicole Newsted :)
Jason's one of the reasons why we love Metallica ofc Cliff is irreplaceable but Jason was badass especially his backup vocals at the time
Jason, you are well missed, just so you know!!!
Greetings from Germany
GRANDE JASON
Appreciate you Jason .
Jason's long hair maybe coming back!!
Fucking love Jason
I think he said that he isn't able to play metallica songs anymore just as a joke. He is one of my favorite bass players ever. Great guy as well
Jason made that band and he saved this interview too.
Jason Newsted was more Cliff Williams than Cliff Burton. I always thought that _The Black Album_ was Jason's revenge for _...And Justice For All_ . It and the live performances proved Lars was wrong for silencing him. If Cliff Burton was a lead bassist, Jason was for the most part a backing bassist (songs like "My Friend of Misery" was an exception). If you hear the bass stems on _The Black Album_ they are just incredible. Simple but incredible.
Jason is a great bass player, a very genuine MetalHead and a nice guy...a bass player very different from Cliff, Burton was genius, histrionic, a leader..Jason is a most classic bass player, a solid wall of sound, simple rhythmic lines..but surely jason did not have to envy Cliff the energy and attitude...a badass bassplayer! .Robert is definitely an excellent bass player, technically prepared though ... maybe it's the band's fault that doesn't want / manage to enhance him or is simply out of context ..
