Firewire Machado Sunday Surfboard Review

  • In this episode, I review Firewire Sunday designed by Rob Machado which could be the Seaside and Beyond’s replacement.
    If we take a look at the outline of this board, it’s basically a stretched out version of the Glazer wrapped in Helium with a few tweaks.
    The board is pretty light and durable.
    After I put 7 sessions into this board, I haven’t found any major foot impressions on the deck and on a scale from 1-10, I can give it a solid 1.
    I’ve surfed Firewire Sunday on crappy 1-2 ft onshore slope days as well as 3-4 ft day with some texture.
    Overall Firewire Sunday has delivered a great performance. Compared to the Seaside and Beyond, I found it pretty challenging making late drops in steeper waves and finding a good spot to take off.
    Firewire Sunday may not go as user friendly from the beginning so I would suggest putting more time in to get used to it.
    I’d recommend Firewire Sunday in the 7’0” size to more advanced beginners and above level surfers to maximize fun in the water especially in small waves.
    I’ve got a few DM’s on Instagram about this board and two of the most popular questions are:
    How does the board work and Is it better than the Seaside and Beyond?
    I’d love to share my answers in this review.
    Enjoy it!

    I’m 6 foot and 200 lb Advanced and have the 6’0. This is my favorite board in the quiver right now! Thing surfs so good and had so many different characters to it depending on the fun setup. I recommend u only go a few liters above your grovler in this board to really feel it shine.

      Great to hear that the board works well for you. Thank you for watching and your feedback. Much appreciated.
      I'm finishing up another review on Firewire Sunday 7'0" after surfing it in much better waves from Tropical Storm Ana. I would definitely go shorter if we had consistent surf. 90% of the time, it's 1-3 slope 🤙🏽 Cheers!

      I’m about your size. There’s something appealing to me about the shape I just can’t decide to go for a 6’0 which would be only a couple liters over what I usually ride or jump up to 6’4 or even 6’8 and get a more mid length feel

    Hey Skipper,
    Great Review. When you explained the volume profile of the board and how you approach your take offs to catch waves, it made a lot of sense.
    I have 7'6 CI Mid and have done only about six sessions. Love the board just don't understand it yet lol. I have been having trouble with my take offs. I know most of the volume is in the chest area, so would that mean I would have to paddle early for waves or go for late take-offs? (I'm usually in 2-4 ft conditions)
    Thanks in advanced! 🤙🏿🙏🏿🌊

    • @SkipperSurfReview
      @SkipperSurfReview  3 роки тому +2

      Thank you for watching. It depends on your level of surfing. The reason I do late drops is to avoid extra paddling and wasting energy to catch waves. I rather sit deeper to find a sweet spot and make 2-3 paddles to get into the wave.
      So, if you are around beginner level, it can be really challenging at first. You will need to find the spot as close to the peak as you can where the most power is. The position on the board could play a big role. It would be easier to give you pointers if I saw how you surf. If you get a chance to get a few clips of your surfing, hit me up on instagram. I can analyze it and let you know how to make it better.

      Yes, I would still consider myself a beginner (it will be around a year of learning this July) . I don't have too much trouble catching / trimming waves on the wavestorm, but transitioning from that to the CI Mid is soooo challenging. Especially if the waves are a lot steeper which requires quick take offs.
      Yep makes total sense on finding / hunting for the peak of the wave. I also notice before I paddle for a wave if my chest is not dead center, or a bit farther back on the board I will likely nose dive haha.
      If I get chance to film myself I'll reach out for further pointers, but you already gave me a lot to work with and I really appreciate you taking the time in helping a "kook" who's just stoked to surf.
      Thanks!

    does the takeoff feel a little stiff/hard for you? i have a 5'9 sunday and when i take off, it feels like it's really hard to get going, the volume thing you were talking about might have something to do with that. but when it does get going, it's a great board haha. thanks for the review!

    • @SkipperSurfReview
      @SkipperSurfReview  3 роки тому

      It's got a little bit easier as I put more time into it. My first two sessions I was struggling to catch some waves. I also have the 7'0" which can catch waves way earlier than 5'9".
      So, it would be easier to see the footage of your surfing to figure out your body movement.
      I can only guess that you may put more weight on your back foot more which slows it down.
      It's just strictly a board for front foot surfing. I would say it's around 60/40 weight distribution.
      There is not much room for mistake when you paddle for a wave. If you are in the wrong spot, it barely allows you to push chest down like put more weight towards the front of the board.
      If you get a chance to film. yourself, hit me up on IG to share the footage. I can analyze it and give you the feedback.
      Cheers!

    Great review. Im looking to get same board at 7’3 length for local NJ coast surf. Im
    5’7 180lbs heavy. How is this board for beginners? You mentioned it does not paddle as fast? Can you get in early before it steeps up? Also curious if can give me enough float at 7’3. Thanks

      @SkipperSurfReview  Рік тому +1

      Thank you, James! To be honest, this is not a beginner level board. It will feel way too responsive and not give you the stability when you pop up. I would reach out to DaveySKY Surfboards to see what he could offer you from his models. He's a local shaper from Manasquan, NJ. He has a nice looking mid length HSS I believe that works as 2+1. Hope this helps!

    How does it compare to the ci mid? Also are you going to buy the ci twin pin? Hope you get better waves to try these speed eggs.

    • @SkipperSurfReview
      @SkipperSurfReview  3 роки тому

      It's so different like day and night. CI Mid has an amazing glide + stability when you cruise down the line in small waves, however it's not as responsive and doesn't allow you to force it to do sharper turns. In much bigger waves, I think CI Mid works better, in terms of catching the waves even late drops but you will need to take more time to set up for a turn (cutbacks) vs Sunday which allows you to swing it around at any moment.
      The new swell has just started to fill in and I hope I can test it out in much better waves but I don't expect to ride it any different.
      Cheers!

    Hello Skipper, do you duck dive your board or turtle roll it? Please advise, I'm thinking about getting the 7' sunday.

    • @SkipperSurfReview
      @SkipperSurfReview  3 роки тому

      Hey Boca! I do duck dive it if it's small weak swell. Once it goes over 3ft, I just wait for the lulls. If I turtle roll, I will be pushed back to the beach due to the fact how light it is unlike the longboard which would hold the spot better. I mean, I can try to dial the turtle roll on Sunday but I prefer to save energy!
      Hope this helps.

    well done as always. I need new knees to get that cheater 5 down. hahah Unless i learn to switch stance like you. for some reason my right knee is much better.
    For me it's so hard to compare boards. So far though, as silly as it sounds, the 6'0 Sunday has been one of my favorites to review. I just bought the 6'8 for me and my brother to share as a mid and plan on borrowing the 5'6 to test. Not sure how Rob is going to out do this one. The only bad thing about this board is I had to buy a crap ton of fins. I thought I already had enough fins but looking at my collection, I had no diversity. Anyways, at least I have a single now and some decent side bites. Too bad my 6'0 is Futures and my 6'8 is FCS. haha 😥

      Hey Thomye! Thank you for watching. Do you do some workouts on the Indo board? That can really help to improve switch stance at some point. It's so cool that you can share stuff with your brother. I can't imagine how responsive 5'6" will be. Will be glad to see review. If it looks great, I may be tempted to get it LOL.
      I'm trying to keep my fin sets quiver at minimum otherwise it will give me more headache to pick the right set.
      I think you should still get the CI Mid to get the real single fin vibe with glide :)
      Cheers!

      @@ThomyeSurfs Trying to go more like Mason Ho style haha. I think I get around without the tail pad because I don't do 12 o'clocks like you. Also, I don't have time to feel it here in Rockaway, the waves are so fast, it's mostly a muscle memory... but I really think I need to pay more attention to it and start using my backfoot more to hit those sweet spots above the fins.
