  • Surfed looks so so this morning at Bolsa so my brother and I decided to have a little surf adventure. We went somewhere we normally wouldn't go. We have been there once, about a month ago, but I left my GoPro in the car by mistake on that day, but not this time.
    The surf was actually decent, good size but just a tad soft. The Firewire Sunday 6'0" was perfect. The last time, I had the 6'8 and it felt too big.
    Anyways, I hope to have more first time adventures. I may hit up the Ranch and possibly San Clemente Island. Water seems a tad sharky but I'm willing to try if the waves are good.

    beautiful spot .. shame about the crowds but you surfed well anyway. sometimes tactics are needed, many put themselves out waiting for the biggest waves but very often they lose a lot, in these situations I position myself a little inside and below and so I surf many more.

      :) It was a pretty decent day right? We almost didn't paddle out because from the bluff, it really didn't look good, not even surfable. Glad we stuck to the original plan. Yeah. It was a decent day. Being a weekday and small size of waves kept the crowd relatively lower than usual. When it's a decent day it gets much more crowded. I've seen the wave by the rock you mentioned surfed by 3-4 guys once during the past winter season. It was a big day (a few feet overhead). What you said about that wave is correct. I noticed that there was a good drop but not much after and just fizzled out.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  Рік тому +1

      funny you ask, cuz I actually now have the 6'8", the 6'0, and a 5'6. My favorite is teh 6'0. it big enough to catch more waves than my usual, but small enough to surf well. The 6'8 is a super fun, cruisy mid for me. But I manage to get some maneuvers in here and there. The 5'6 is my least favorite of the three, I still love it but what I find is that it is small so I want to surf it like my normal performance board/shortboard. But it falls short of giving me the performance that I'm used to in my FT or Mashup. I have had moments of greatness. One of my best backhand turns was on this board. But my consistency sucks on it. I still plan to keep it but the Sunday for me should be ridden bigger.

      on the 6', I really like it with keel fins. sort of big but great hold. I have tried it with the future EN and a stabilizer but it would slip once in a while and it didn't drive off the bottom as nicely. recently I surfed it again as a single using a 7'5 Christenson, that worked well for down the line and trimming. I plan to surf it more as a single to surf on my rails more. hoping it improves my shortboard skiils.

      God that sounds so limiting. But if I had no other choice I think I would do the modern2 in 5'6 and then the 60 Sunday. So that would be a 29 leaderboard and a 38 liter board. yeah, I need to try my gofish although the wave is super soft after the first turn, especially the rights. Fun little adventure! Because of the wave, I noticed you did a lot of close out reentries, foam climbs, and floaters and turned what would probably 0-1 turn waves into multiple turn waves. Any tips on those?

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  3 роки тому +4

      For multiple maneuvers you want to stay tight to the pocket and surf top to bottom. Depending on the Wave i tend to do my first bottom turn right as I drop in, however this is only possible if you have a high liter board or a fast wave. If I didn't have a 38 L board I would have to probably go down the line a bit, do a cutback and then possibly a maneuver.

    About the fins set up, what can you suggest to us ?

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  2 роки тому +1

      i think it all depends on what you want it to feel like. My very first session i took it out as a twin with the machado keels. although it was a tad tight, it held and I was super surprised how well it went. I don't think I ever had a board give me as much initial stoke/surprise as the Sunday. Anyways, ere are the fins that I surfed:
      Twin Keel (machado keels): ua-cam.com/video/G91M3opYXwQ/v-deo.html
      1+2 (fcs 7" which was probably too big and I had it too far forward): ua-cam.com/video/iKtEnS3BwbM/v-deo.html
      2+1 (Futures EN with small trailer): ua-cam.com/video/MMUoq64TdUY/v-deo.html
      Single (7"): ua-cam.com/video/MvA2oxT6ugc/v-deo.html
      I liked it as a keel twin the best. I'm not sure if the machado keels were the best since they are pretty big. I think either a smaller keel or a modern keel. NVS makes the Marlins in 3 sizes. Hope that helps. I'll try and surf it with different twins since I didn't do that the first time around.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  3 роки тому +2

      I love the 6'0 Sunday. at 38L, it is about 12 L more than I would surf a normal performance board. So, it is my ultra groveler but because it is only 6' and 20.24" wide, it still can perform. I can do top turns, wraps, and layup off the lips. It's been the best board for review I have done so far, in terms of fun and always surprising me. Obviously, it's not the best performing board but it does to some degree perform.
      I have been surfing a 6'8 as well ad that one is a little tougher. I've not been surprised by it but it's an entirely different board. it comes in at 48L and is more of a cruiser. This might be a bad comparison but for a beginner and or intermediate, the Sunday be better than the Seaxe I tested and much better than a large Twice Baked (too wide), and possibly better than a Beyond which could be too straight railed and not enough volume unless you get the timbertech versions.
      Anyways, it's a keeper for me.

      in this particular video, I was using Chronos Mouth piece, it's one of the few that doesn't make me gag. The GoPro itself is the 9. The lens that I mentioned is the Max Lens Mod. Is a super fisheye lens but it allows you to turn on the Horizon Leveling. Basically, the camera will make sure the horizon always stays level. You can flip the camera 360 but the image will stay perfectly level. You can see the effect when you look at the water spots. The spots will move but the horizon stays level.
      One big caveat though is that the darn lens grabs water. My other lens provided you lick it keeps drops off. but this one, doesn't matter how much you lick it. I think the curve of the lens really enhances the hydrogen bonding effects of water (surface tension). I'm going to try that gopro clear solution to see if that helps. But for now, back to the old lens.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  3 роки тому

      couple more things. I make sure the camera is 45 degrees to the mouth piece. I almost looks like it is point to the sky when in my mouth standing but when i'm laying down or surfing, I guess my head is tilted down.

    Which length is this one bud? The 6 or the 6,8? I surfed a lot when I was a teenager and now 36 the kids have grown up a bit and trying to get back into it and really like these Sundays. As anyone I’m struggling with size choice. I’m 6ft 4 and around 92-95 kg and looking at the 6,4. How are they like for duck diving etc….. they have quite a bit of volume don’t they.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  2 роки тому

      I'm on the 6'0 in this video. it is 38L and I'm 65Kg when I shot this. They do have a lot of float but since they aren't really performance boards per say, it doesn't hurt to oversize it. I usually surf around 26 to 29 liter boards. If I wanted some more for performance, in my liter range that is, I would likely not get the 5'6 Sunday since there are better performance options out there. But i think the 5'4 would have been a really fun board too. I just found this board to be super surprising. i did not expect it to go so good and I am still able to squeak out some performance here and there.
      At your height and weight, the 6'4 would put the needle closer to performance and not grovel. So it depends on what your waves are like and how much you want to paddle. I gave my 6'8 to my brother, way too much grovel for me. but I know I wouldn't be sad about owning the 5'6 as well as my 6'0. Point being, I think you would be happy on either the 6'4 or the 6'8. I would suggest go 6'8 since everyone needs a good summer board. You could always get a smaller better performing option down the road. That was my logic by going with the 6'0, 10L over my norm. I knew if it was too big, I could go out and get the smaller one and still have a really fun summer board.
