Firewire Machado Sunday 6'8 Review - definitely a Mid-Length

  • Finally, here is the review of the Firewire Machado Sunday in 6'8. The dims are 6'8" X 21" X 3" and it comes in at 48 Liters. I'm 5'8" and weigh 145 lbs. For me this is a legit Mid-Length, funboard, big board, mega groveler and so much more. At times I feel like I am channeling my inner Machado.
    For those of you that follow the channel or have run across my review of the Sunday in 6'0, you can't really compare the two. There is 8" of length and 10 Liters difference between the two so they are different boards with the same name. Having said that, I would probably choose the 6'8 since it would fill a bigger gap in my quiver. My 5'3" Twice Baked is my super groveler so the 6'0 Sunday sits just outside of that range.
    It would almost make sense for me to have a 5'6, 6'0, and a 6'8 in my quiver if I didn't have the Twice Baked or the Modern 2 as my daily drivers. That is how different this board will feel at the various lengths.
    I highly recommend this board for intermediates and up. If you get the board big enough, it would probably work for a beginner if you ran it as a single with side bites. But there are far better options for beginner out there such as soft tops and foamies.

    I have the 6'8 too and I love it. I think it's the best of both worlds between short-board surfing and long board surfing. I put in an 8.5 in single fin and I can hang 5 with no problems. I mostly run it as a twin for the speed :) It's super fun to turn it like a board that's 6'0 and below. Me being a beginner bridging the gap to intermediate, I totally agree with Thomye on it being good for an intermediate surfer. I've also only been surfing for 2 years and I love this thing, it goes well in trestles and it goes well in the bay area grovel :) Thomye I love your videos, keep up the great work!

    You should check out the js big baron. I got the 6.8 for when it gets big and barreling here on the east coast, but found it’s also super fun when it’s smaller. Surprisingly, my buddy said my turns looked better on it then when I was on a normal 6.0 shortboard (and I thought I was doing good turns on the shortie!). Probably because I was going faster.

    Some great insights! I’ve been learning to longboard to have some options on small summer days. I found myself pearling the nose often and I was chalking it up to not being used to such a flat rocker compared to a short board. I’m sure that’s the case some times when the waves pitches up or I try to catch it too late. But I noticed I was pearling on really soft flat waves too and I think your explanation about “over paddling” makes sense. I’m probably trying to paddle my longboard like my short board and getting pitched forward. I would see others on longboards and they are barely paddling to catch waves when I felt like I was working way harder.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  2 роки тому +2

      yeah, i would suggest either scooting back a bit or just as soon as the wave picks up the tail, stand up. if you saw me cork the 2 waves in the review, i didn't paddle because I was already getting pitched. if i did take a stroke, one, i would have been late and 2, i would have gotten too much speed and pearled. i remember doing that when i first was goofing around on the wavestorm. i now hardly stroke on that board.

Helium is much more durable than PU and Thunderbolt is a tad more durable than Helium. The TB is still light but stiff. At that length, not sure it matters too much unless you can really push on the board.
      Having said that, if you want something that feels better, go with the Helium (but only a little better). If you want something that is going to last much longer, then Thunderbolt.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  2 роки тому

      Here is the tricky part of your question. if I compared them by litters, the Sunday would be 6' at 38L. The Beyond would be 6'8" at 38L. Between these boards at 38L and if I were looking for best performance, I would go Sunday. They would paddle roughly the same but the Sunday being 8" shorter would be much easier to turn and carve.
      Now having said that, if I were to compare them by height, the 6'8 Beyond is 38L and the 6'8" is 42L. Comparing them by height, I would then choose the Beyond for performance but the Sunday for grovel.
      :) tough tough choice.

    Interesting note about the large "sweet spot" for paddling. I've been riding the 7'3 and only just noticed that I could move several inches further back with minimal change to the displacement of the board when paddling. When paddling do you lie further foward on that sweet spot or futher back?

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  Місяць тому +1

      I tend to go forward and really put pressure on my knees to keep the nose up, also arch my back but then like to drop my chest/chin so the board slips in easier. I find if i'm further back, i tend to have to paddle much harder.

    Nice review! Which board would you say is more beginner/intermediate friendly between the 6'8 Sunday and 6'8 Seaside and Beyond? Would the tail lifting you're describing be harder to handle for a beginner/intermediate on the Sunday?

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  Рік тому +1

      that is a tough question. I think the nose rocker on the S&B is more user friendly but the tail of the Sunday is also user friendly. so for catching waves, S&B, for surfing, the Sunday. Having said that, there is a better option in my opinion. best of both which might be the MOE by firewire. Watch Harley Ingleby, that board looks like it has almost no limits. no, I thought the 5'6 would be too close to my el tomo, modern 2 and glazer given the liters are similar. hard to compare the Sunday to S&B. People ask that quite a bit but the volume to length is too different. if you compared them on volume, they would be 8" apart and if you compared them on height, they would be 8 Liters apart.
      I think the 6'8 S&B is more performance oriented compared to the 6'8 Sunday but if you looked at the 6'0 Sunday which is closer to volume to the 6'8 S&B, then the Sunday performs better and is smaller so it is better in several ways.
      Having said all that, if you only gave me one choice, I would probably get the 6'0 Sunday for performance to volume ratio. But thank God I don't need to choose. haha Definitely a first world problem. :)

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  2 роки тому +1

      surprisingly i thought since it was a bigger board, I needed a bigger fin but it turns out smaller was better. I used the NVS Marlins Large in the video when riding it as a twin but off camera, I did get a chance to surf it will a smaller set of NVS Onos and it went better. the board is big enough to where you aren't looking for extra speed, rather you want to loosen it up a tad more. On the 6'4, i think the medium set of Marlins would go well. Good compromise.

    Hey Thomye - great videos. I have the Sunday in 7'0 and whilst it's great at catching anything and everything, it feels a bit "boaty". I have the option of picking up a 6'8" Seaside and Beyond. Having ridden and owning both, what's your take on the difference? Very much an intermediate weighing around 170lbs. Thanks!!

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  Рік тому +1

      in a nutshell, Sunday = more versatile, better for smaller waves. Seaside Beyond is better for bigger waves. if there isn't much of a wave face or transition, the S&B feels too long and tight.
      I think you may have just bought the Sunday too big. Volume wise, the 6'0 Sunday is the same liters as the 6'8 S&B. Comparing those to boards, the Sunday then is a better performer in small and bigger waves because it is just more agile. If you compare them by length, 6'8 to 6'8, then what I said above in the first paragraph holds true.
      Go back and watch the S&B review. I really like the way it surfs in bigger fuller waves. it is so fast and I especially loved the cutbacks it did.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  2 роки тому +1

      i think it might for paddling but the GB looks like it has a wider nose so it might be like riding a longer Sunday with its nose cut off. The 6'4 Sunday might feel more maneuverable since the nose is pulled in a tad more making it surf probably more like a 6'0 GB.
      But I can see how it could overlap. The only thing is, i don't know how thick the GB is at rails since i have never held it. Also, the fin setup will make it feel different. It might be too close to spend the money unless you were looking for a GB refresh. Then it would be a logical transition since it would put you at or near the same volume and close dimensions.
      Having said all that, I remember watching RM on the GB and I didn't think he surfed it particularly well. it thought he looked a tad sluggish and he was catching rail here and there. Hard to knit pick that guys style. he makes everything look good. Anyways, he seem to surf the Sunday way better in all sizes too.

    Hey Thomye! I am an intermediate 48 year old surfer and am 5'11 and 182 lbs. Anyway, I'm trying to fill a hole in my quiver and I'm wondering if the Sunday might do it for me. I regularly surf a point break. The wave breaks for about 50 ft or so and then it gets really deep and it almost stops breaking. Guys on bigger boards are able to glide over it to an inside section and ride another 50 feet or more. I have almost no experience on longboards and would rather not surf one if I don't have to. One other issue at the same break I am trying solve is that I sometimes can't get into waves early enough when the waves get bigger (over chest high). What would you recommend? From what I have learned from your videos and other reviews it looks like somewhere between 6'4 and 7'0 would work best. Just not sure which to go for. Thank you and I love your videos!

      @ThomyeSurfs  2 роки тому +1

      when you say "not sure which" do you mean between the 6'4 and 7' or between different type of boards in this range?
      If you are talking specifically about the sunday, I think your being 3" taller than me and almost 40lbs bigger, you should size at minimum the 6'8. Having said that, the different between the 6'8 and 7' is just under 6L. me at 145 and having surfed a 6'8 Sunday can say that it is a great uber groveler fro me but at 180lbs, it might not be as impactful so definitely the 7' would be a better fit for you. if you want a more shortboard feel, the MOE might be a better option. You can ride it as a quad which would feel more like a shortboard than a 1 +2 which feels like a mid and even a longboard at times.
      Anyways, for that wave, stay north of 50L for sure.

      I'm 63.5 Kg which is pretty light and yes, I can definitely surf less volume, in fact, this is the very reason why I have the 6' Sunday which is 38L. 38L to 40L is my max duck dive volume. Any more and I struggle. The 6'8 is basically a longer board for me which I got for my brother. But since I had it, I thought I would review it.
      It is Epoxy and not just epoxy but a .75 lbs eps core. Most epoxy boards put in 1.5 or 2lbs foam which isn't as buoyant. Firewires Helium technology uses the lightest epoxy it can get away with since it has a hard composite outer shell. It is super light, super buoyant, and super strong. the 6'8 is 48L. Relative to a PU board, just in buoyancy, I would say it is equal to something like a 52L PU.

    I recently got a 6'4" Sunday and am having a blast riding it as a twin+trailer. (I'm 6'2" 180)
    The Sunday has been amazing on everything waist to chest high at my local beach break. Super easy to paddle and catch waves, but loose and easy to generate speed down the line.
    But on shoulder high+ and/or a bit hollower waves, it gets a bit squirrely for me. (especially backside)
    What do you think about a 6'1" Glazer for those days when it gets a bit bigger and punchier? Based on pics I've seen, the Glazer and Sunday look relatively similar. The outline and volume seem about the same. Bottom contours are similar. But the Glazer looks to have a slightly narrower tail/nose, less tail rocker, and a thruster set up.
    Since you've surfed them both, I'm really curious to hear what you think about how they surf differently in slightly bigger conditions!

      although I have surfed them both, my glazer was 5'3 and only 28.7L. My 6'0 Sunday is 38L making them way too different to compare. Having said that, in my case, i found the glazer to be squirrely in general and lacked top end drive.
      Typically, when stepping up, you often go longer, narrower or same width, more rocker, etc. In this case, the Glazer is shorter, wider, which means thicker, it also has way less rocker. I'm not sure if you have heard this before but the design ideas behind a stepup is usually to slow the board down since the wave has all the energy. Having said that, initial thought is don't go with a Glazer. But I would need to know more about your surfing, the waves, etc. A 8' soft rolling waves is different from a 5' punchy hollow wave. Glazer would work in one and maybe not the other.
      another option is the 6'8 Seaside and Beyond. seems counter intuitive but I find that board to just lock and be super stable. Today was a few ft overhead and I got some really nice turns on it with some off the lips. but definitely stable. also dropping in liters might be good for better waves so you have more control. at 180, 35L is probably your sweet spot. the sunday at 45 is probably a good groveler. I think your step up should be around 40 but longer rail line.
      give me more detail about your wave and skill and I'll see if I can advise better but off the top of my head, Glazer would not be a good choice.

      @@ThomyeSurfs Thanks for your reply! I really appreciate it.
      I'm 53 years old, but pretty fit. I took off about 10 years from surfing. But have been surfing consistently again for about the past 3 years. I surf 3-6 days/week at El Porto. (North of Manhattan Beach) So all beach break, all the time.
      I'm comfortable in most conditions up to head high.. (fat tide and mushy, low tide and racy, etc) I can generate my own down the line speed and turn reasonably well. But TBH, backside pumping and vertical bottom turns are still a work in progress. Backside actually feels better on punchier days. Maybe because I don't have to work as hard?
      I didn't know the step up design principle. So thanks for educating me. It totally makes sense for the board to slow things down when the waves get powerful.
      In the past couple years I've tried a 5'10 Seaside (40L) and 5'7" Average Joe (37L). I rode both on bigger/punchier days, with mixed results. I caught waves fine, but felt a bit out of control on both. The Seaside felt skatey, and was a bit challenging to duck dive. The Average Joe paddled and duck dived fine, but felt too fast. (I was riding it as a quad)
      So I think you're right, somewhere between 35-40L is likely the right step up range for me.
      El Porto is notorious for being walled and dumpy. So having the bottom suck out on the drop, and getting pummeled inside is a regular occurence. I'm trying to find a board that will paddle, catch waves and perform in more powerful conditions, but not be a liability on the paddle out or steeper drops.
      Hope that all makes sense...

      @@bobswiftly3003 thanks for sharing. btw, i'm 52 and had a few breaks in my time as well. Not as long as 10 years but a couple of 3 to 5 years breaks. Good on you for getting back in it. I think surfing is great at keeping you young.
      definitely

    Hey, Thomye, I am big fan of your video. I have 7'4" lost smooth operator if you wanna give it a spin. I don't mind lend it out to you. Only concern is the dimensions is not what you looking for. Regardless, hit me up if you want to give it a spin. I live in OC area so I shouldn't be too far away from you. ( My smooth Operator has a FCS fin set up.)

    How hard is to duck dive the 6’8”?

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  2 роки тому

      touch for me but I weigh 145 lbs. I think my limit for fair duck dive is about 40L. Even that is a tad too much when the waves are bigger.

    As a twin aren’t the fins too far up?

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  2 роки тому

      not at all, you want them on the rails for better drive. think about a mini Simmons. those fins are usually way farther apart. Also, the tail is pretty narrow on the Sunday.

      @@ThomyeSurfs Far from the tail. Usually twins are further back than a thruster etc. Not the width. Curious of the placement on the Sunday.

      @@garretdouglas4056 it is further back by about 1 " to 1.5" which is why rob didn't put a quad option. I guess that would have put the quad too far back. which is also why people that longboard don't agree with the side bite option, they feel it is to far back.
      I tested the Surf Prescription Tur Twin Pin who's fin placement is roughly the same. and that is a dedicated twin with no center option.

      Rob says he designed this board primarily as a twin so the fins are suited for that, the single fin box was there as a secondary optional so people could play with it and because of this he said if you run it as a single with side bites use the smallest ones you can find as the side boxes are in the correct position for a twin fin. Hope that helps explain what he was goin for with fin placement

      @@karljakobsson2687 it blew my mind too. I asked Firewire if they can hook me up. I liked it even with Harley surfing it. His cutbacks on it were smooth and he too ripped on it. But Schulz took it to a next level. Having said that though, he is 6'2". that would be like me riding a 6'6. Me surfing the same 7' might not be a good evaluation of the board.
