    Great to see you tried the setup Thomye, looks like you got on with it well - certainly made the best of the waves! Great surfing 👍🤙
    I run the NVS stabiliser too, it's a great fin.
    looking at the fin box setups on the Sunday, they are much more clustered than on my 6'6 Egg. This is likely to benefit the board being surfed as a real twin fin.
    That setup backhand was certainly a game changer on a similarish board for me.
    Great content as ever! Hope you are well 👍👍

    I grind a small notch in the front lug that the angled grub screw can bite on to hold the front of the fin down. This is so the fin can't lever itself out if you hit something.

    A lot of speed & quicker, tighter maneuverability, even on the smaller size waves! I’m always messing with fin size, set up & configuration’s. It pushes my surfing by experimentation. Also can turn a lame board into a magic board, if you get the proper fin set up in it. NVS fin’s are great! I’ve grabbed some Dan Mann & Noel Salas model’s & I’ve been stoked on the quality & performance with all of them. I gotta get me a few of those stabilizer fin’s now! Can’t wait to see how the single fin review comes out.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  3 роки тому +1

      Agreed on NVS fins. Great fins but even better company. the quality of the Apex series are amazing and I love the stiffness of them. I think because they are so stiff, they can make them thinner which then allows them to flex a bit. But it's a really quick twangy flex. I inquired about the C Drive fins to try out on the Sunday. Can't wait to try them out. for sure get the stabilizer from NVS. I have 3, one single tab, two tab, and I also run the 4.0's as a bigger stabilizer with my smaller side twin fins.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  3 роки тому +1

      I'll have to mention it but the way I feel about it now is this. Based on volume alone, 38 vs 40, the Sunday is 8" shorter but almost floats just as well. not having that swing weight, I can actually surf the Sunday more like a normal board. So I would give that to the Sunday hands down.
      Comparing length, say something like the Sunday 6'8 to the Beyond 6'8, that might go to the Beyond because of the 8L you save. It might surf better in terms of performance. Having said that, the Sunday at 6'8 is more like a mid length especially with that fin box. We will find out soon enough. I have a 6'8 coming in. :)

Could you let us know if that worked better as a 2+1? Strongly looking to purchase one but I’d rather not be limited to a dedicated twin on my backside. Thanks!

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  Рік тому

      The offset makes the board a fraction more tight. Holds during turns a tad better and not as much slipage. Without the offset, the fins are a tad clustered. Still works to stabilize but not as well.

  • @soulrebel9653
    @soulrebel9653 3 роки тому

    Great review! Here you mention that the trailer fin does not go back far enough.... how did that effect the performance compared to a more common stabilizer fin placement?

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  3 роки тому

      tad looser. where it was, at the very back, it just felt like a very clustered thruster. better hold than a straight twin for sure but since you go with non keels in a 2+1 setup, it loses a bit of drive. you pivot point bets moved up a few inches too.
      using the lost trailer in the US box setup pushes the fin back about 1 to 1.5 inches. that felt better for certain things but also made the turns a tad bigger.

    What is your idea on the newish Britt Merick Twins for the Sunday? Do you think they could be a good compromise between a keel and the smaller, apparently too upright twins in the FCS range? Thanks for your work for us less accomplished surfers! 💪

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  Рік тому +1

      normally I would say no to any normal modern twin on the Sunday, at least not without a stabilizer, especially if you are a heavy front footed surfer like myself. Having said that, the new Britt twin appears to be a semi keel. It's sort of slimmed down from a traditional keel. They almost look like Robs quad keel front fins (the seaside fins). Because there is a small bit of fin hanging over the base, I think your correct about the "good" compromise. At times, my Machado keels on the Sunday are a bit much and the NVS surf prescription Tall Boys are not enough due to the very narrow tips; i need a stabilizer with that fin. So the Britt Twin looks good. They have the wide base and keel hangover and they also have a slightly wider tip. I think they would go great in the Sunday.

    Hi Thomye. I have a 6'8" S&B in Timbertek that I will be selling and thinking of replacing with a Sunday. I am shorter (5'5" @ 160lbs) and find the S&B too long, and the Timbertek too heavy. I have a 5'4" Sweet Potato, which I love love love. Would you recommend the Sunday in 6'0" or 6'4" for my size? I am leaning towards the 6'0" but worried it might be too close to my Sweet Potato. Thank you.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  Рік тому

      6' is plenty enough for you weight. I think it's 38. If you go with the 6'4, it might start to feel too much like the S&B form a bulk perspective. the 5'4 sweet potato is roughly 35 so that 6' sunday would be a slightly better groveler but also since it is narrow and has a round pin tail, it will handle bigger waves better.
      remember a couple of things. in terms of paddle, the sunday will be slightly better. in terms of planing bascially getting to float speed, the sweet potato is better cuz of width so the two offset each other each other and will catch waves similarly. but, the will surf night and day different. The sweet potato will stop at about 3ft waves. maybe 4 if it is a slow wave. The sunday will go better in punchier conditions and bigger. not sure if you saw my first review but some of those waves were decent size. no way i could have done that good a turn on a 5'2 sweet potato and definitely not on a 5'4. but i'm also only 140lbs.
      Besides, the 6'10 TT S&B is like 47L, the sunday 6'4 is 45 but helium so they are almost the same in terms of buoyancy. since you seem to love your 5'4 SweetP, i would say 6'0 Sunday.

      on the bigger boards, I use a different trailer now. www.surfnvs.com/collections/apex-longboard-1/products/stabilizer-apex-1
      if you notice, the mount point can go all the way back in the longboard box but the fin extends past it. The stabilizer that I used in the video worked too but was a tad looser since it sat up 1" up. It's a fun option to have. I do mostly surf it as a twin but only because I tend to surfing it in softer conditions. when it gets good, I opt for my shorter more performance boards. I did try the EN's but it wasn't as god as the Keel. to be honest, the Machado keels are a tad too big/tight on the 6'0. I think that fin would go great on the bigger Sundays. Having said that, I think the EN might work really well with smaller Sundays, 5'6 for sure and maybe the 5'9. Ideally, what would work best would be the Machado Keel if you could shrink it a tad, from 26L to 23L.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  3 роки тому +1

      I have yet to surf it as a thruster but as is, with all the fin options and the board setup, I would pick the Sunday. Here is why:
      Glazer 66 20.125 2.625 32.3
      69 21 2.75 37
      72 22 2.875 42.2
      Sunday 66 19.75 2.5 31.22
      69 20 2.625 34.66
      72 20.25 2.75 38.32
      1) fin options are a tad better. Single, Twin, 1+2, 2+1 w/ special trailer, thruster (using True Ames offset fin)
      2) the length to volume ratio is more conducive to performance and width as well.
      3) it seems the glazer is a locked in size, meaning, I ride the 5'3 and someone that is heavier and taller would ride something bigger. On the Sunday, I can ride everything in the range. Even a 6'8 as a funboard/mid length.
      4) I like helium, tougher and lighter
      5) having surfed them both, 5'3 Glazer @ 28.7L vs 6'0 Sunday @ 38.3L, I have more fun on the Sunday. There may be times I would want a smaller board but then if money wasn't an object and the 5'6 Sunday was an option, I would likely pick that over the Glazer. @ThomyeSurfs  3 роки тому

      I was just looking at the FCS lineup and they don't have anything that I think aligns with the Machado Keel but with less area.
      The RM's are 26.54" in area. you probably want something around 22" to 24". There are twins in their lineup at are in that range but then the shape of them changes. most are more pivoty fins.
      A really good option might be the NVS (naked viking surf). The Marlin fins are basically the same concept as the RM's but it comes in 3 sizes (S,M,L) which allows you to size it proper to the board you are riding. Maybe a small for the 5'6 and 5'9. Medium for the 6' and 6'4. And Large for anything bigger. I am using the Naked Viking Machado GoFish model which they don't sell anymore. But I have a Marlin on the way because I felt the same way, a little tight.
      The only drawback is the 2 tab which in my opinion isn't really a drawback. People make silly comments about the gaps when used with the fcs2 system but if you think about it, most boards you surf have empty fin boxes anyways. Most of my boards have 5 fin boxes (fcs or futures) but I only use 2, 3, or 4 of them. I have never filled the empty ones.
      Just a thought. Reach out to them and ask what they think. The cool thing is, they are super cool guys. I have talked to them a bunch even about making a custom. I just recently asked if they could make a trailer for the longboard box that is about 1.5" off set so it can be further back in the longboard box like a stabilizer should be. they are totally willing to work with you. Time is the only issue for customs. I might actually buy the Ono's instead of the Marlins for the Small option because someone might be lending me his 5'6 Sunday for another review.
      Oh, the only real drawback of using a 2 tab system in an fcs2 box is that you lose the convenience of easy removal and install. But to be honest, once I find a set of fins, I don't normally swap them anyways. I have been on my Sunday but only for reviews. Once done, I will likely settle on a set. I'm leaning towards the 2 +1 at this point. but I have yet to try it with a set of Medium Marlins.

      this is the spec sheet for all the Keel fins that FCS makes. There is only one keel fin around the 22.5" mark, that is the Retro Keel but that fins is long and raked back. Hey Thomye great progressive reviews! I’ve been waiting for my beyond for a while now ..(comes in nov) so I decided to grab a 6’8 Sunday while I wait lol. What fin setup did you end up really liking for the Sunday? I primary surf bolsa as well 😁

      @ThomyeSurfs  3 роки тому

      Hi Tina,
      Which fin system did you end up getting, futures or FCS? Coincidently, I just got my 6'8 as well.
      On my 6'0, I really like it with either twin Keel fins or upright twins and a stabilizer. However, that is for maneuvering. If you want it toned down, a 1 +2 works really well. I think a 7" center fin with side bites (maybe even a 6'5" center)
      On my 6'8 Sunday, since mine is FCS, I am going with the Marline Large fins from Naked Viking Surf. However, they might feel tight if you surf forward on the board. I surf off the tail quite a bit but since I have not tried it, not 100% sure yet. Hopefully, I'll get it out this weekend. For now, if you are already coming off a longer board and have a longboard fin, try that with side bites.
      Once I test mine, I'll know for sure.
      Just as an FYI though, my favorite set up so far on the 6'0 is the upright twin with this stabilizer: futuresfins.com/products/lost-3-625
      Again, that is for tighter turns.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  2 роки тому +1

      I have not tried the machado quads on the TB. I think it would work great but can't know for sure until I try. My only hesitation is that the tail is so wide and you would want bigger fins towards the rear. The Machado quad rear fins are small. I'll try it and let you know at some point.
      As for 2+1 on the TB. I would say no, although i have not tried it on the TB, i have tried it on my Baked. Because of the wide tail, you want to be further back on the board. Being behind the front fins, the tiny trailer just made my BP swivel without producing drive.
      Having said that, i loved my BP as a thruster but I love the TB as a quad. The size of my tb is 5'3 vs 5'1. The TB is bigger and heavier cuz it is timbertech so the quad loosens it up a bit without sacrificing drive.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  2 роки тому +1

      one more thing. I have surfed my brothers baked potato which is taller as a quad and truster and it goes better as a quad. so my 5'1 baked is better as a thruster but my brothers 5'5 baked is better as a quad. thinking about it, i guess the 5'5 floats so well, that i can't really drive and push the board much so I become a passenger to the boards capabilities. which is best as a quad. While my 5'1 baked goes better as a thruster because I can tic tak it around and the thruster give me more drive. hope that makes sense.

      @ThomyeSurfs  5 місяців тому

      Ciao Andrea. No, not better, but different. Depends on the surfer and what that surfer wants to feel. Twin keel is fast and feels like the board has a motor. but then becomes a tad harder to turn tight. so in bigger open waves, I like the keels. In medium waves with tighter pockets, a non keel twin (like the NVS Orcas) with a stabilizer seems better, for control and maneuverability.

    Any update on Lost stabilizer?

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  Рік тому

      yes, i have the lost offset trailer fin as well as the Naked Viking version. The NVS version is a tad smaller so I think it works better but in either case, it does stabilize the board especially when the water foamy or broken. Typically if running the 2 minus the 1, the board is a tad slippery and doesn't have a lot of bite at lower speeds. So when pushing off the tail, it doesn't drive as well. Adding that fin give it a more truster feel or a twin feel with more drive. At higher speeds the offset gives it a tad more hold than the stabilizer that I used in the video. I'm not sure I will make an entirely different video of it. I have 2 boards I have to get done and finding no time to post process. :( Hope this helps and hopefully I can get around to it.

      @@tristanholsgrove7619 Purely mathematically speaking, I'm on the 6'0 which is 38L. You at 205 lbs if you wanted to surf the board in my ratio, would be 53L which is the 7'0. Having said that, I am riding my Sunday like a mid-length even though 6'0 isn't mid-length. I bought it to cruise. I scaled it that way. Something that I could barely duck dive. It was a total surprise to me how well it surfed as a twin and 2 +1. I did not like it as a single or a 1 +2 but to be fair, that is not my style of surfing.
      At any rate, 7' is probably a good bump up for you. If I wanted as much performance, I would get the 5'6 Sunday which mathematically would be 42L for you. I think that is the 6'4. But that is aiming for performance. The board in my opinion in the longer lengths, is more of a fun board.
