MOODIES are a band that is really deep in it's music, here's proof... Thanks Troy for analyzing and bringing out the under bass rhythm that most don't get. (I didn't for a while) 👍
Such a brilliant Bassline - busy but not over playing either. It seems impossible to play until you see somebody really good make it possible. I’d buy you a cold pint if I could, my man!
I worked with Michael Pinder in his home studio and it’s the pride of my life although I’ve played with numerous groups and people I grew up listening to. You covered this brilliantly ! I grew up listening to the Moody Blues and I love their early albums to this day. GREAT CHOICE !!!
How wonderful is that? I've rubbed virtual (and physical) elbows with a number of the bass players whose bass-lines I have covered and the experience is nothing short of uplifting. I can only imagine what working with them on a professional level would be like... so happy for you. Thanks and take care.
Love the Moodys - seen them many times. I talked the acoustic guys into this, and "Lovely to See You" and "Nights in White Satin". Another ripper to play is "Just a Singer"
I think we’ve seen them twice, many years ago. I do remember it being one of the loudest shows I’ve ever heard. You should try the flute solo and Locomotive Breath.
@@TJH3113 You a funny guy! THAT is more Troy territory. You fiendishly talented so n' so. I did work out the string interlude from Dust in the Wind on bass for an acoustic thing some years ago - was a PITA. As was the synth solo from ELP's From the Beginning
Wow.. a great job here.. I had no idea this Bass line was so ripping. John Lodge was very underrated and the Moody's have so many great songs. "I'm just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band" and "Tuesday Afternoon" are also good bass tunes.
Wowza, you are The Man! I was injured in a 30-foot fall. I can no longer play guitar or violin. I picked up the bass 18 months ago. I'm progressing, but nothing like this. Wow, just wow!
Hi Troy, again many times I know but besides your great great bass skill, what even strikes me more is how nice and humble you are -being in silly cover bands for so much of my 20s 30s and 40s I dealt with such pricks ,the guy that would go to guitar Center just to plug-in and play every lick he knows, now throw on a snob face and walk out. Not being a particularly big Moody Blues fan, I had no idea Justin Hayward's birthday was one day before mine, cool. The most spectacular birthday coincidence is "The Professor" Neil Peart was born on the same exact day as my mother, Sept. 12, 1952. Now THAT'S cool!!!🥁
I would not have known either but, when I can't decide what to upload, I use a site called "This Day in Music" that tells you what happened on any particular date - births, deaths, events... My birthday is September 12 as well.
@TJH3113 Yes, we discussed that previously and I forgot to include you. But yes, Neil Peart, my mother, and you sure make a nice birthday trifecta on Sept. 12th.🎉🎂🎁🥳
Oh man, absolutely! Never considered requesting some Moody Blues from you, but now that we're here....how bout that "I'm Just A Singer (In A Rock And Roll Band)? I know, it's repetitive, but boy is in intense.
I second that request for “Singer in a Rock ‘n Roll Band.” It’s driven by the bass and drums, though the studio mix is dense, like in Story in Your Eyes.
I do love the Moodies and the way they were recorded in the studio as they had such a great production sound which was part of their signature sound that gave them the atmosphere that spoke for itself. Its always fun to see folks respond to their musical prowess when something catches their attention that they may not have been expecting. Their first 7 records are my favorites from them. When Mike Pinder left the band, the band changed into a sound that didn't really do it for me any longer, although they do have some fun songs after he was gone. Thanks for bringing some attention to this band and maybe it will bring some younger folks into acquainting themselves with some great music from the past...when music was actually music (my opinion - your mileage may vary).
Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to leave such a great comment. When getting some info about the song off of Wikipedia I read that they used a Mellotron quite a bit, which I think may have contributed to the denseness of the mix.
@@TJH3113 Pinder's use of the mellotron is legendary. It didn't hurt that he worked at the factory where the different models of Mellotron were built so he had extensive knowledge on keeping them working properly while touring.
Hey man - great cover. It’s been a favorite of my wife and I since the start of our 38 years of marriage. Learned a lot about the bass line by listening to the isolation!
Thanks for posting this! I play bass in a band that covers “Story in Your Eyes” like you, I was frustrated by what a mess the mix is when trying to figure out the exact bassline. Thanks to your breakdown, I will now be able play it note for note at our big Xmas party gig! 🤘
Happy to see you doing a MB cover, if only because of John Lodge. He's a great one. Nice job! He plays with a pick, and from what I read somewhere, all the MB stuff was recorded with an old Fender P he's had since childhood.
Another great performance of a song I didn't know. Troy, your deep musical knowledge sure brings to light great bass lines from a multitude of eras and genres. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and expanding my horizon, yet again.
Oddly enough I liked the bass line better without the music lol. Right around 8:03 sounded really cool but also made me think of The Musters theme lol. Your version was better and certainly more fun 😁
Play different drum beat changes to feel a bit… Maybe that’s what you’re hearing. Yeah, I can hear the Munsters theme in that riff as well, now that you mention it.
A another fantastic job from Troy.just got a new today Vintera II Telecaster Bass in the surf Green. This would be a good to learn on the new one.Great job as always.
I looked up the bassist, John Lodge, on Google and was struck by how much he resembles the Third Doctor Who, Jon Pertwee. It’s a great line and you did a great job. Cheers!
Never been a big fan of that song, but listening to you play the bassline with a drum track it's a very cool ska song. Sounds like the Specials or something similar. Thanks again for sharing your awesome content!
I'm a HUGE ska fan, and I can hear what you are saying. That drum track snare emphasizes the 2 and 4 beats, and the energetic baseline would be a great floor to some back beat scratchy guitar rhythm, with bright horn chords pulsing with that snare accent.
Very nice ... for some reason, this made me think of Door Into Summer by Mike Nesmith of the Monkees. No idea why ... (edit - I guess it was actually written by Chip Douglas & Bill Martin)
Very cool. "Something About You" is already recorded and I had a great time learning it. You just need to remind me when your birthday is so I can plan accordingly.
Well played Troy. Those tracks where the vocals are half time to the underlying tempo are always tough. Got sent a song to arrange recently where it's the same thing and I've been struggling with it - and it's not 170 bpm!!
This truly is "all about that bass" the song would suck without it!
Truth!
