Pete Farndon and James Honeyman-Scott were hellva musicians that left this earth way too early. This Pretenders line up was perfect for the times in late 70’s. I still play their two early records pretty often on the turntable. Thanks for the upload.
The Pretenders debut album was a gem. You could pick any song and it would be radio friendly. Precious remains my favorite. Perhaps one for Pete's birthday on June 12th. Too bad he only lived to be 30. Say no to drugs and yes to playing the bass guitar.
Yes, great stuff. She's a real survivor, to have carried on after losing two big parts of the bands sound. Yes, I've got one more put to the side for Pete's birthday.
Got really lucky in 86 and my first cover band experience had an excellent female keyboard player/singer who could absolutely NAIL The Pretenders. We must have played every song off their first two albums. Just killed it every time.
This band is ahead of there time.they don't get enuff credit.back in the 80s this bands tape was in my car tape deck all the time.great band.great cover my man
Wow. I forgot how much I used to like/listen to these folks. You nailed it. I love the tone and your flow. I remember see them in central park schaffer shows. Live you could really hear the jangle of the guitars n cymbals playing off the bass. Like I said, you nailed it. Thank you for the happy flashback sir.
A fantastic tune and a deceptively tricky bass line. Well done, Troy! Pete was really something special... I'd love to hear you cover Day After Day from Pretenders II
“Maybe tomorrow, maybe someday” I’ll see you cover Slipped my disco? But Today I smiled so big and laughed playing along with you, to one of my favorite Pretenders songs (my favorite is “Tattooed love boys”). Happy birthday to such a flash of inspiration, he and James both died so young. I remember being a kid thinking that’s the life expectancy of great rockstars “if your lucky you might make it to your mid 30’s”…. and I was cool with that. Now being in my 50s, I’m of 2 minds, 1. That’s sad dying so young. 2. I wasn’t a great rockstar. Cheers Fonzy, you made me smile and laugh today.
@@Mike-hv1uf but aren’t all the best songs, stories of real life experiences, joy, pain, pleasure, sadness, loss, gain, darkness… Real life experiences that are relatable, give comfort and strength to people that have been through similar experiences. Maybe I’m wrong?
Another memory from the days when MTv was good. Chrissie's voice is great and the post-punk nature of the band makes for good listening. The band's hard times were pretty sad. 'Message of Love' was always a great one for fun music. Hope everyone has some good times with the holidays coming up. They pass too quickly so do your best to enjoy it to the fullest.
Another one of my favorite bands. I think they are often overlooked. They had some great songs and demonstrated some awesome musicianship. You did them proud, Troy...another gem.
Pete was my first favorite bassist. Soon later Geddy took over, but Pete will always have a special place in my heart as will the first two Pretenders albums (as many here have said). Thanks for the great cover!
Really enjoyed my "Pretenders II" Vinyl Frisbee back in the day! Living in Columbus, Ohio I was thrilled to hear Chrissie Hynde was from Akron. My two boys loved their MTV videos as well. Being a 1956 Baby myself it is never lost on me that I'm a lucky knucklehead who survived my Cheech & Chong Party days! I do remember when James passed away and it was quite a shock. The Pretenders "Sound" was a fixture in my playlist back in the day. As always Troy you make this look so simple but like most pieces you select, you put the time and practice in and it shows! I laugh now but The Pretenders always made "The Greaser Look" appear cool! Cheers and MOO From COW-lumbus!
It wasn't terribly long ago that I learned Chrissie was from Ohio. I always assumed they were an entirely English band. I wonder how she hooked up with those guys. I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to find out. Thanks again and take care!
Fantastic! YOU NAILED IT, Troy. I love every second of those first 2 Pretenders lps, for all the musicians involved. I was pretty in awe of Farndon’s melodic yet driving bass creativity. I got to see the original lineup in a club in Memphis sitting up close, and they were intense and spellbinding. A band I was in back then did 6 Pretenders covers, which were among my favorite things we played. Thank you for this awesome video.
Nice one Troy. Good to see the Guild get a run. It's a great sounding bass - even though they are very different bands the tone here reminds me of Geddy.
Dude you are the balls, you have made me a hero in my band..I have learned so much from you. We are rebuilding with a pedal steel player who is out of this world, and a young woman that plays like Robbie Robertson. So thank you Talk of the town is one of the songs that I suggested and because of your video I can play it. Cheers bro. Love the masks
How did I miss this when it was posted??!! I saw The Pretenders on their first UK tour (that’s how old I am!) and I was already blown away by Jimmy’s guitar and Pete’s bass. Pete always played the bass line I would have wanted to play if I hadn’t been more about guitar and this rendition is a glorious example of that. Like Pete, another player who never gets the credit I think he deserves was Alan Tarney - especially in his time with The Shadows. If you’re not familiar Troy, check out ‘Live at the Paris Olympia’ I think you’ll appreciate his playing and maybe the challenge too!!
Wow, I'm glad you got to see them in their original lineup! We came close to seeing her/them a few years ago when they were opening for Journey (The Pretenders were the reason were bought the tickets), but the show was cancelled. I've never heard of Alan Tarney, but I'll check him out. Thanks for the suggestion.
Hi Troy. If you search ‘The Shadows Live’ you’ll find a lot of tracks from that show. Alan played on that tour with them, there’s a lot of variety and his bass is quite high in the mix.
Another great bassline! I know you've done a bunch of Kiss tunes, and i have another for consideration: "Love's a Slap in the Face". Lots of great parts and a fun one to play. 🎸
A lot of tragedy in many of these multi platinum bands, Troy! I love your choices. Have you ever paid close attention to the Garbage song "Special" ? Note the 2nd half of the song. Gives me goosebumps how much Manson sounds like Chrissie Hynde (intentional).
Truth. Thanks! When I was on Wikipedia, getting dates and stuff, I read a bit about Garbage using a line from this song in one of theirs and that Chrissie allowed it without ever hearing the context. I'll have to check it out.
Brother, just wonder if you have a video on Dreams by the Allman Brothers 1:31 would very much like to hear you play that. Your ear is amazing. You nail every song. Oh too be able to do that as well as you do. Or even half as good. I have been trying to assemble a band from the local musicians that I have met at open mics. Not easy to get everyone on the same page, but I have met a woman that looks like a Viking goddes and plays like Robbie Robertson, that's why Talk of the town is ideal. Anyhow thanks for putting out such great videos. Sorry for the rant. Cheers brother.
I do not, but I'll check it out. Thanks for the suggestion. Good luck with the band formation. I know it's a tough road, but sometimes magic happens. Thanks and take care!
This a great tune. A good solid bass line that really holds the rhythm together. I liked the sound you had. Any special effect or setting for that distortion? As usual, kudos!
Thanks. I'm using a SansAmp Bass Driver Ver. 2 for my EQ, but it's not really distortion. It's more a bit of fret buzz and fresh strings mingling with the high end that gives it a "crunchy" sound.

Thanks Joe!
Such good sound and playing! He died so young.
Thank you very much. RIP Doug 💔
Never disappointed hearing Pretenders. Thank you for sharing. I recently learned “Don’t Get Me Wrong”. I’ll try this one next.

Very cool! Lucky to have been able to cover such a great catalog of music and make it sound good.
Nice to hear the Guild out again Troy. I love that song. Never tire of hearing Chrissie Hynde's vocals, especially here incredible vibrato.

Yeah, he puts some pauses in there that didn't come naturally. Thanks... I'll check it out!
agree. I would say deceptively easy once you watch Troy do it :)

An influence on me starting out as well. Really liked the whole group’s sound. What a tragic shame its two losses were.
